"Views" counter stuck on ZERO?

Featured Replies

Can anyone tell us why the "views" counter is stuck at "0" in some threads? It's disconcerting. Thanks.

It eventually seems to catch up - really strange quirk.

I've requested that some of our more tech-oriented folks look into it.

It's not broken. The automatic update of the "Views" counter is turned down to three hours. It is a performance issue.

Here is why:

Update Topic Views Immediately How can I tell if I need this?

If enabled, the topic views counter will be updated as one loads a topic. If not enabled, the topic views will be written to another table and the topic views updated every 3 hours. This will significantly reduce overhead on the topics table if you have a very busy board as it overcomes the write lock initiated when the topic counter is updated.

Often times with large boards updating the topic views can cause issues. Since the topics database table is accessed every time someone views a topic, it can put a strain on the table and lock queries as a result. Setting this option to No will update the views every 6 hours. While all views will be counted, the topic counter will not be updated right away to help reduce the chance of this table being locked. This setting is recommended for large/active boards.

When thread views (and other things) are set to update in real time, it's a drain on the server...
