Just do what CR does...ask 10 owners of each car you're researching what their real world MPG is, and take that as gospel.
It's so hard to say for "real world" numbers. Everyone drives differently, and experiences different conditions. A lead footed teenager trying to get around LA is going to experience very different mileage with the same car than gramps cruising to the diner in Sarasota.
