How Much Is A Volt Worth In Three Years?

So you just bought a brand new Chevrolet Volt and are wondering how much it will be worth within three years. Well, Kelly Blue Book has figured out and answer. They said, the 2011 Chevrolet Volt will be worth $17,000 after 36 months. That's only 42% of the Volt's $41,000 MSRP.

Eric Ibara, director of residual value consulting at KBB said the projected residual value is on the low side. But, Ibara points out the first 200,000 Volts will be offered with a $7,500 rebate dropping the MSRP to $33,500. Using the $33,500 MSRP and KBB believing gas prices will stick around the $4.00 level, KBB projects the Volt will hold 51% of its value. That happens to be higher than the 2011 Toyota Prius (46%) and the 2011 Ford Focus (37.5%). We're still scratching our heads on why KBB factored it in though.

KBB says they will be setting the residual value on the Nissan Leaf. No word yet if KBB will factor the $7,500 rebate into their value for the Leaf.

Was this article written in the future and dropped into a wormhole? Correct me if I'm wrong, but the Volt is scheduled to have 10K made the first year... and looking at the sales/production so far... 2000... looks to be missing that mark.

By the time 2014 comes around or the rebate expires, there may not be 200K Volts out there.

I'm not knocking the Volt's sales or potential, just KBB's presumptuousness/grammar.

LOL, I didn't notice this was written for C&G... It otherwise read like news from the big publishers... which is good. I would not have been so snarky had I realized this didn't get piped through an editor making big bucks. Your articles have been very good, and it shows when I critique them like the big bucks writers. :-P Keep up the good work.

The $7500 is a tax CREDIT not a rebate.

It's my understanding that you would have to owe taxes in order to see any of that money UP TO $7500. If you owed $1000, that's what you would receive as a credit. Since I get money back on my taxes due to my mortgage deductions, I would not have qualified for the tax credit. If you read anything Chevy puts out, they clearly say that not everyone will qualify.

This is one of the reasons I leased my Volt as they added $7500 to the residual, lowering the payment. The lease is really the way to go.

As I said, this is how I understand it. If anyone has info to the contrary, please share it. Thanks!
