Honda's Civic is having a rough year; the redesign has been receiving a lot of criticism and has caused Honda to move up a refresh to 2013. Then the earthquake earlier in the year cause delay of new Civics being delivered to dealers. Now, there's a new problem for the Civic.

Honda tells Inside Line that dealer inventory of the new Civic is "virtually zero".

"Civic sales are down for one simple reason: Low dealer inventory as a result of a shortage of small parts caused by the Great East Japan Earthquake earlier this year which nearly halted production of the 2012 Civic," said Chuck Schifsky, an American Honda Motor Co. spokesman.

Schifsky noted that recent flooding in Thailand "will cause another disruption in production."

In other words, if you were planning on getting a new Civic, you will be waiting awhile.

Honda is cutting back local production here in Ohio because of the parts shortage thing.

But demand for the car is also way down, as other alternatives are so good. Hyundai sells a bunch here in Honda Country, around here the Focus and Fiesta sell well, and Cruze is Ohio built and also becoming common as sand on the Sea Shore.

Probably a good thing that Civic inventory is down to near zero. They've fallen behind pretty badly with the latest re-design and are now second tier to Chevy, Hyundai, Ford, VW, and Mazda.

Look at that list and think about this, Toyota, Honda, and Nissan are all behind them in popular opinion and you realize how upside down the world has gotten in just a few years.
