With a new Volkswagen Golf on the way, that means right behind it is a new GTI. Car Magazine has unearthed some information about the seventh generation GTI due out sometime next year.

The next GTI will be on VW's new MQB platform, like the next Golf. MQB will bring a weight loss of 90 lbs to the GTI. The next GTI will be lower (about 30mm (1.2 inches)) than the current model and use a longer wheelbase (about 50mm).

The current GTI's powertrain, a 2.0L turbo-4 will carry over to the new model, albeit with a bit more oomph; 217 HP and 251lb-ft of torque. Also, the GTI will get a limited slip diff, not an electronic one that is in use in the current model.

251 ft-lbs is a very nice boost in torque. An increase of 51 ft-lb over the current 2.0T while only increasing horsepower by 17 means that most of that torque boost is coming on down low in the rpm band. Should be good for fuel economy if VW makes the 6th gear a little taller.

Yawn..... I hope they have something more exciting than this when they do show the car, over all, this is very much a none event IMO.

While the engine statistics are nice, I have not been impressed with the execution of VW auto's. Every time I get in one I get this cheap feeling.

The current GTYI and TDI are built in Wolfsburg, and are the only two vee dubs I'd really consider.

Almost, almost, almost bought a GTI when we bought the Cooper S, looked at both new and Used GTI's.

One heck of a car...and I am now thinking much more strongly towards the GTI than the Focus ST for my next "practical" car...

And I think 'blu is right in his rants...the ability to have a two door is a huge factor in my leaning towards vee dub....
