Land Rover chose New York as the place to unveil the 2014 Range Rover Sport. Not surprising since North American is Land Rover's best market and New York leads the continent for sales.

The new Range Rover Sport's exterior looks like someone took the outgoing Range Rover Sport and placed the Evoque's front and rear end to it. It works very well actually, giving it a very aggressive look.

Heading inside, the 2014 Range Rover Sport is more even more opulent with a stitched leather dashboard and seats, wide range of interior colors and trim, and a optional 12.3-inch electronic gauge cluster. Also available is a third row which Land Rover says is perfect for children or teenagers, or for adults on short trips.

The 2014 Range Rover will come with two different powertrains:

  • 3.0L Supercharged V6: 340 horsepower, 332 pound-feet
  • 5.0L Supercharged V8: 510 horsepower, 461 pound-feet
Power is channel through a eight-speed automatic to a a permanent four-wheel drive system with locking center differential.

The Range Rover Sport uses a new an all-aluminum unibody that weighs 800 pounds less than the outgoing model. To put that into perspective, the 2014 Supercharged V6 model is 0.3 seconds than the outgoing base V8 model, despite the V6 being down 35 horsepower. The 2014 Supercharged V8 is a second faster than the outgoing Supercharged V8 model.

Even with the sporty looks, the Range Rover Sport is still a Land Rover. That means it gets latest version of Land Rover's Terrain Response system. The latest version can detect what kind of terrain it's rolling over and automatically select the best mode to handle it: General, Grass/Gravel/Snow, Mud/Ruts, Sand or Rock Crawl.

Land Rover hasn't announced when the 2014 Range Rover Sport will go on sale, but they did announce the prices which are as followed,

  • Range Rover Sport SE: $63,495*
  • Range Rover Sport HSE: $68,495*
  • Range Rover Sport Supercharged: $79,995*
  • Range Rover Sport Autobiography: $93,295*
*Prices include $895 Destination Charge.

It's nice, but I doubt the supercharged V6 will really offer any MPG gains and that most will just go with the V8.

Land Rover is considering building a halo model for their Range Rover lineup to give the Bentley Bentayga some competition.
"Why not? We've realized that the Range Rover has got this big expanse across its price range, so it's not a very big step to get into Bentayga country," said Gerry McGovern, Land Rover's design chief to Automotive News Europe.
McGovern said that a Range Rover competitor to the Bentayga would have the edge as they have been doing the luxury SUV for much longer.
"Bentley doesn't have the pedigree and authenticity in that particular sector. We've got unquestionable pedigree."
McGovern went on to say that he would like to see the Range Rover family expand. Currently, there are four models in the lineup - Range Rover, Range Rover Sport, Evoque, and the upcoming Velar. The plans for expansion could cause some overlap, but McGovern doesn't see a problem with this.
"I would argue you could have two Range Rovers exactly the same size but if they had two personalities then they would both have equal appeal but to different customers."
