Industry News: Rumorpile: Where Does BMW and Toyota Plan To Build Their New Joint Sports Car?

The long-rumored joint roadster/sports car project that BMW and Toyota are working on has found a home for production. German newspaper Kleine Zeitung reports Magna Steyr - a unit of Magna International based in Canada and specializes in building low-volume models - has been contracted by BMW to build a new model at the Graz, Austria plant starting in 2018. The plan is to have an annual production run of 60,000 vehicles.

 

BMW has confirmed that it will be contracting Magna Steyr to build a new model next year after deciding it would end production of the Countryman and Paceman at the factory - possibly the next 5-Series sedan. The Paceman will be axed while the Countryman will be moved to the Netherlands to the factory that produces the standard MINI.

 

Neither BMW or Magna Steyr commented on what the model would be.

 

Considering the low production numbers in question, many believe that is reserved for the new BMW roadster (possibly named Z5) and the Toyota Supra.

While I would not say 60,000 is a low volume production, when looked at the 6 Billion humans, then yes low production. Be interesting to see what they come up with.

Compared to typical Toyota volumes, 60k is miniscule...

 

That's more than most Scions lately.... so now you know why they had to die.

      The Mach 1 crossover currently has the codename of CX430 and will likely have some design cues inspired by the Mustang. Underpinning the model will be Ford's C2 platform. Currently, this platform is being used for the next-generation Focus and Escape crossover.
      The Mach 1 is part of Ford's plan to launch 16 electric vehicles by 2022.

      Fiat Chrysler Automobiles' CEO Sergio Marchionne will be making one final move before his retirement - ending production of mass-market vehicles in Italy.
      Sources tell Bloomberg that on June 1st, Marchionne will unveil a plan that will see the end of production for the Alfa Romeo MiTo and Fiat Punto to make way for more upscale models. Fiat's historic plant in Turin will be retooled to build a new smaller Maserati SUV alongside the Levante. Another plant nearby Naples will be home to a small Jeep SUV after production of the Fiat Panda moves to Poland. It should be noted that the plan isn't finalized and details could change. FCA declined to comment when reached by Bloomberg.
      Part of the reason for the change comes down to Marchionne's belief that there is no future in building affordable cars in high-wage European countries. 
      The report also mentions that FCA will be cutting Fiat's lineup to just the 500 and Panda in the future
