@smk4565, did you hack into @balthazar's account? Jaguar/LR are barely the volume of the Denali trim at GMC. I wasn't speaking of volume, I'm speaking of differentiation of purpose. Defender and Discovery buyers are not cross-shopping against the E-Pace or F-Pace, they're looking at the Lexus GX, or maybe Yukon Denali or Grand Cherokee Summit if they're open to brand-slumming it. E-Pace and F-pace buyers are going to cross-shop with Macan or X4/5 or GLE "coupe" or the Infiniti QX70 if they still made it. The Genesis GV70 and GV80 are direct broadside torpedo shots to the GLC/RX/MDX (the XT5 should be here, but it's so outclassed on the interior I can't put it in the list with a straight face) and the GLE/QX60/Aviator respectively. These are the big cushy cruiser crossovers. What I'm saying is there is room for KLB to do a better Defender / Discovery / GX460... or an Escalade/Navigator/LX (hybrid or EV only of course) then add the Stinger with a substantially upgraded interior and a "rugged" small EV (think Baby Rivian) and you've got yourself a luxury brand that doesn't overlap with Genesis.2 points

I wasn't listening to them on my own, but they were tied into some articles and links on various homepages. Both are sort of prescient with insightful lyrics, having listened to them in the past. Sting - "Russians" - 1985: Elton John - "Nikita" - 19852 points

You're thinking old style rebadging. That is exactly what I wouldn't want to do. Where Genesis is curvy, KLB should be square. Where Genesis is plush (and their higher trims are very plush), KLB should be firm and restrained. Designed with function in mind rather than flare.2 points

I guess we are living in the 'new normal'... reality is complex. I know lots of people are grousing about gas prices, it is what it is...paid $3.75/gallon for unleaded last weekend. I'm getting an average of 23.x mpg...been driving an extra 200-400 miles every weekend the last 3 weeks, probably will be for the foreseeable future (going back and forth to my farm). The Jeep has been great in mud setting and 4wheel low on the farm, but I kinda wish I had an old 4x4 truck out there...something I wouldn't mind getting scratches from bramble and tree branches and to haul in and out junk. Edit: filled up today, $3.99/ gallon. $75 tank full. Ready for the weekend2 points

Go ahead and make an '82 Pontiac Grand Prix LJ coupe or '82 Cutlass Supreme Brougham coupe electric for me. I can dig it.2 points

And generally turbo 4s aren't known for their longevity and reliability, aren't they? More stress...maybe I'm old school, but I still view 4s as something for small entry-level subcompacts and compacts, and some small sports cars...not something aspirational or worthy of being in a luxury car brand, IMO. If I'm buying a luxury car, I'd want a 6 or a V8, not a plebeian 4 cyl..1 point

At least it has some chrome to offset the ugly...better than the nasty work truck versions w/ all the black.. These trucks are so thick and tall today. Visually, I think they would look better with maybe 4-6 inches sectioned from them. The obesity makes the classic GMT-400 and older generations look clean and svelte.1 point

The CT5 and XT5 have a 4-cylinder too, but if you mean a 6 cylinder CT5 is 4-cylinder E-class money, that's a valid comparison. But also the C43, GLC43, SL43, etc are getting a 390 hp 4-cylinder, the C63/E63 a 640 hp 4-cylinder hybrid, so you are going to get what used to be V8 power with high gas mileage, which given the likelihood of $5 a gallon gas, that is going to look appealing.1 point

Needed a break as I worked till midnight last night on tradeshow stuff for our Dell Technology World stuff May 2nd to 5th 2022 in Vegas, so went up skiing this morning. Topped off the Escalade at Costco, regular gas $4.249 per gallon, 18.477 gallons for a $78.51 bill and that was only filling up from 1/3rd tank to full. SS uses Premium, which is now @ Costco $4.66 per gallon, 20 gallons went in last night so $93.20. Yup, wish electrics that fit me were out as I would happily ditch ICE for EV at 6 cents per kilowatt charging at home. Would save me big time.1 point

I remember both of those songs and the Cold War mid 80s era...still relevant today.1 point

Very random (and funny ... we can all use funny these days) thought: When I am on my profile page, I have one very dated and inactive warning for some heavy duty arguing with ocnblu almost 13 years ago!1 point

Shockingly, I didn't take auto shop in HS. But there were way more hours in 'shade tree class' auto mechanics in those years.1 point

That’s why I’m suggesting that they do not overlap, but hit different “styles” of luxury. Genesis takes on the metro-chic luxury of Mercedes. KLB goes after the woodsy “I own a working estate In Connecticut” like LandRover and the Lexus GX/LX1 point

Very cool photo. I like the effect. I've seen this sort of photo before, usually looking upward. And I'm sure you went to a public high school. I split my time about equally between 2 Catholic ones (the first a prep one in a not so great neighborhood and the second a regular archdiocesan one in a good neighborhood) and NO ONE talked to me about college tracks and whatnot. The counselors we had were incompetent. This one b!+ch in the attendance office gave me one of my two detentions in H.S. because I got there an hour late one day when I had to take my parents' new car to the dealership for warranty work since they both worked (so they could send me to Catholic schools). The second one was once a popular one for kids, but no longer is and is fading. The second school also did not prepare me for college as well as it could have, even though I got through it and did graduate with the lower tier of 3 tiers of honors.1 point

From the mail bag.... occasionally I get these e-mails regarding this 10-year-old article in protest to @Blake Noble's conclusions.... usually, they're just one-line retorts calling us stupid... but I got this one last week and it was very well written. Dennis says: "I would disagree with your review of the Chrysler 2.2 - I had cars with both the 2.2 and 2.5 - my mom had an 83 Plymouth Reliant with the 2.2 and auto trans - she drove it until she quit driving at about 160,000 miles - when we sold it. I did have the head off once I believe, or maybe just the valve cover gasket - the main thing on this car is that it needed to be tuned just a bit out of specs for it to run right - if set within specs it would not run well at all until warmed up. Frustrating thing is that the mechanic showed me that it made very little difference in emissions tuning it to the place where it would run great. The car was comfortable, had one a/c repair at about 100,000 miles, roomy, and I thought it was an attractive car - hers had a nice dash and interior - unlike the ugly cars of today. I did try to keep this car well maintained - so that helped no doubt. But at over 160,000 miles, it was running great, not burning oil, and got great gas mileage. The 2.5 engine was very smooth, but I would take the slightly better gas mileage of the 2.2 over the smoothness of the 2.5. And the 2.5 still sounded not-sporty at a stoplight in my 87 Daytona" Dennis, we love to disagree with people and we love when people disagree with us. It's part of what makes this site fun. So please consider signing up and join in the fun.1 point

Wow- they really screwed up the body proportions on that re-creation (it's certainly not a 'continuation of the original'). OR..... you could buy an ACTUAL, recognized continuation GT40 from SuperPerformance, still go 0-60 in the mid 3-sec range, plus get all the visceral sound and feel of a V8 supercar, instead of an annoying, anemic, whining sound.1 point

I'm really torqued right now because I thought 2022 would be the slowing down of Covid 19 and things might get back to "normal," or close to something normal. I wanted to go back to enjoying "normal." It's pretty serious when, in modern day Europe, someone is ordering attacks that kill the vulnerable - children, elderly folks, sick folks, not to mention ordinary folks and which also destroy tons of property.0 points
