  1. US House Shows E15 The Door William Maley - Editor/Reporter - CheersandGears.com February 22, 2011 The US House has blocked the EPA from continuing with their plans to introduce a higher blend of ethanol into gasoline this past Saturday. The amendment introduced by Rep. John Sullivan, R-Oklahoma to a bill for government funding was overwhelming voted by a count of 286-135 to prohibit the EPA spending money on waivers to allow gas stations to sell E15 till September 30th. "The EPA has completely ignored calls from lawmakers, industry, environmental and consumer groups to address important safety issues raised by the 50 percent increase in the ethanol mandate issued over the past year. Putting E15 into our general fuel supply could adversely impact up to 60 percent of cars on the road today leading to consumer confusion at the pump and possible engine failure in the cars they drive," Sullivan said. The Renewable Fuels Association, a trade association representing producers of ethanol see it differently. "The fact remains ethanol is a thoroughly tested, safe, and effective motor fuel. Americans spend nearly $1 billion a day importing oil, often from hostile regions of the world. The House has denied consumers choice in the type of fuel they use. Instead, they have chosen to continue giving oil companies a virtual monopoly over the fueling system." The Senate still has to vote on their version of the government spending bill where ethanol has support. The fight over E15 is far from over. 3. Try #2: Motor Trend Confirms GMC Granite William Maley - Editor/Reporter - CheersandGears.com February 21, 2011 Last Summer, Motor Trend confirmed the GMC Granite would be going into production based on statements from Tom Stephens, GM's engineering chief. However, Motor Trend changed it to strongly believes after GM's PR said Stephen's comments were not conformation. Now, Motor Trend is going for try number two with the GMC Granite going into production. This time, they have a source who says the Granite has been given the go. Their source says the Granite will be riding on the delta platform that also underpins the Buick Verano, Chevrolet Cruze and Orlando. Design wise, the Granite will be taking cues from the concept including the suicide-style rear passenger doors. Power for the Granite could be the 1.4-liter turbocharged inline-four shown producing 138 horsepower shown in the concept and used in the Cruze. However, Motor Trend suggests the 2.4-liter from the upcoming Verano would be a good fit. Production for the Granite could start as early as 2012 or as late as 2014. 8. Chevrolet Cruze Gets A Diesel For 2013 William Maley - Editor/Reporter - CheersandGears.com February 19, 2011 Last fall, GM executive Tom Stephens said at the Directions in Engine-Efficiency and Emissions Research (DEER) conference that a GM vehicle would come with a diesel engine. Two vehicles immediately came to mind; the Buick Regal and Chevrolet Cruze. Now, we know what vehicle it will be: the 2013 Chevrolet Cruze. Management told workers at the Lordstown, OH plant about the news last week. The workers were also told production for the diesel Cruze would begin sometime next year. Documents have the diesel engine with the option code of "LUZ" on the order form. The engine that could be used is a modifed version of the 2.0L turbodiesel rated at 148 horsepower (110 kW) and 236 foot-pounds (320 Newton-meters) of torque going through either five speed manual or six speed automatic. In the European fuel ecomomy testing, the 2.0L turbodiesel got 42 miles per gallon combined (50.4 miles per Imperial gallon). Source: GM Inside News: North American Cruze To Get Diesel Power

  13. Hyundai Gives the Genesis Great Power William Maley - Editor/Reporter - CheersandGears.com February 9, 2011 Someone at Hyundai thought the 4.6-liter V8 producing 385 hp and hitting 60 MPH in 5.5 seconds in the Genesis sedan was a bit of slouch. So, Hyundai decided to up the ante by introducing the Genesis sedan R-Spec. The R-Spec carries a new 5.0-liter Tau V8 producing 429 hp and 376 lb-ft of torque. The power gets put on the road with a new eight-speed transmission. The Genesis R-Spec also gets a new "sports-tuned" suspension, larger brakes, recalibrated sport steering, and new transmission programming. The exterior gets new headlights with dark chrome inserts, 19-inch wheels with the option of Michelin Pilot Sport PS2 Tires, and three color choices; Black Noir, Titanium Gray, and Platinum Metallic. The interior is trimmed with black leather and and an all-black leather steering wheel. Gallery: Hyundai Genesis R-Spec Live Pictures
