    Commuting

I'm fortunate in that I get to commute via transit...it's a helluva lot more relaxing than dealing with all of the morons that infest our streets around here, and it saves the car from arguably the worst type of driving (stop & go around town). If I did need to commute via car, I'd buy a reasonably decent beater that didn't need much in the way of mechanical work to make it reliable. I'd probably look for a SWB Caravan/Voyager of 1990-2007 vintage, with V6 engine to allow it to keep up with traffic.
  2. Wonder if that '58 Phord on the left overheated during high-altitude driving like our '58 Raunch Wagon used to? Of course, my old man was kind of an idiot for purchasing it with a 223 six and 3-speed stick. A little too much car for not enough engine, especially up in the Rockies.
  3. My wife pulled up behind a blue Dart at a traffic signal. She thought it noteworthy enough to bring to my attention!

    dating & racism

Yeah, myself, I prefer to stay within the human race.
  5. Friend of mine had one of those early Dusters back in the day. He used to take it out on the gravel road near the farm and do "reverse drops" with it--he'd get it going about 20 MPH in reverse, slam it into drive and stand on the accelerator, so the car was still moving backwards while the wheels were spinning furiously forward. And he'd do it repeatedly. The fact that the tranny & engine never grenaded convinced me of the utter reliability of the slant six and Torqueflite tranny. Edited to add that the car was NEW at the time. This dude was seriously crazy; he piled up a gorgeous '67 Buick GS convertible in the ditch because he drove like such an idiot.
  6. Glad you're here to share with us, Mr. Knightfan! I'll probably pop into your Facebook place. I love old vehicles and old music. Hell, I'm old.

    Pictures!

    I'd be "the aging Asian".
  8. Saw a 1991 Plymouth Acclaim tooling down a side street near my place of work. Did my heart good. Seriously. I liked those cars.
  9. The current Odyssey looks really imposing. I don't think of it as completely ugly, but rather obese. It looks like it oughta weigh 8000-lbs., instead of "only" 4800.
  10. Correction: The Dart I saw was a "Rallye", not an R/T.
  11. So Dart sales are up 36%...maybe that's why I finally saw one (1) on the street a couple of weeks back?
  12. Yep, they all be turds, the_yellow_dart.
  13. Ha-Ha, "ultrasonic medical wand"! Had to read that one a few times before it sunk in.
  14. I don't know why, but the newest rendition of the Quest infuriates me. It makes me grind my teeth everytime I see one coming down the highway. Even the quirky previous generation didn't set me off like the current one does. I really liked the first two generations of the Quest/Villager, though I still preferred the SWB Caravan/Voyager.
  15. Ponchoman, that 403 was a strong motor for that era. Last car my grandad bought was a '77 Electra with this engine. I drove it a lot and was impressed with how much whack it had.
  16. Ugh. That ZDX is craptacular.
  17. Fascinating. Wisconsin is pretty liberal when it comes to beer sales--grocery stores & liquor stores can both sell beer, wine, and even the hard hooch.
  18. Wisconsin is chock full of craft breweries (in addition to crap breweries such as Swiller Low Life). I really like the brews from Stevens Point brewery--inexpensive but tasty. They contracted to do a winter ale for a grocery chain in this area. The brew is called "Enchanted Ale" and I really like it. Spicy, smooth and warming. It also packs a hefty wallop.
  19. Some day, when you're in a real good mood, walk up next to a new Quest and carefully study its design in meticulous detail. I did that a few days ago and I'm still in recovery. I should add that most new cars turn me off--for whatever reason, almost all of the design cues seem to be grossly exaggerated and garish. This was kind of fun in the late 1950s, but now, it's rather revolting.* ------------------------- *I'm sure there were plenty of old codgers back in the late 1950s who lamented the gaudy styling of the new cars back then.
  20. Thanx to whoever added them pix. I ain't capable of doin it from me phone.
  21. Yeah, Thu Juke (Joke?) and Murano are pretty bad too. And then there's an Infiniti model that looks Murano, but even more ridiculous...
  22. Sorry to use "disjointed" twice like that...I suck at txting from a phone.
  23. Keep in mind that my tastes in automotive styling are a bit off-center...I mean, I *liked* the looks of the AMC Pacer for cryin' out loud...but I saw two different vehicles yesterday that struck me as heinously ugly. The first was a current model Nissan Quest. OMG, what a disjointed mishmash of disjointed stylistic crap! The other was a BMW X6. I generally like fastbacks (even on the Honda Crosstour), but the X6 version just looks like excrement to me. Sorry for the crabby old guy bitching session.
  24. Oh yeah, and great summary, bobo!
