  5. I keep going back'n'forth on whether or not I want a GTO. I like the RWD and the coupe and even the styling. I don't like that the only option is leather seats...never have liked leather seats. 'Spose I could throw some seat covers on 'em...he he.

  9. *SECTION #1* This is the OFFICIAL thread of the 2009 Cruising LH/Route 66, from Illinois to California! Specific details and some aspects need to be finalized, so watch for updates.... The information is spread over 2 SECTIONS: #1... ...Background ...Routes/Traveling ...PBS Specials ...Possible Book Offer ...Fundraisers ...Sponsorships ...The People ...Planning Assistants #2... ...Dates ...Proposed Schedule If you need to contact me about this event at any time, my __Cell Ph#__ is noted in my signature at the end of the details (Post #2). **** BACKGROUND **** None of my yearly road trips have taken me all the way to California or welcomed people to join me for part or all of the DRIVING portions of the trip; this one will do BOTH...and follow the path of "The Mother Road".... I am planning a cruise along Route 66 ... with stops at icons and places along the way to explore Route 66 and, of course, meet people. This is an invitation to ALL to join this "convoy" from Illinois to California ... or any place along the way you are able to meet. This event developed from a suggestion by ChevyTalk's Bobs53PU...and, because of my own interest in Route 66, I ran with the idea. I'm curious about Route 66 because I enjoy older cars and roads. The song "Route 66" has had a part in my interest, and a special on PBS about a mother/daughter duo who took the Route 66 trip also peaked my interest. BUT...what deepened my curiosity about Route 66 was the movie "Cars". Strange, yes, but "Cars" featured a lot of scenes from Route 66 ... and was based on actual people and places along Route 66. It also featured history of the road, and illustrated the effect of interstates, such as I-40, on life along Route 66. Since the movie "Cars", I've made a mental note that "one day" I'd travel the basic path of Route 66, of which I personally have not driven much. I was along it somewhat during my October 2004 road trip... http://www.chevyasylum.com/cort/0410/0410.html ...and again a bit in Oklahoma City and through IL during my October 2006 trip: http://www.chevyasylum.com/cort/1106/1106.html IMHO, this is a chance of a lifetime; I hope others agree...and join this "convoy".... Route 66 map: http://www.nps.gov/history/rt66/map/map.htm Route 66 info: http://www.historic66.com/ **** OTHER ROUTES & TRAVELING **** In researching Route 66, I've discovered other "old routes". One is the LINCOLN HIGHWAY, with which I'm somewhat familiar, given the historic marker signs along IL RT 38 through Geneva IL towards Elburn IL and points farther west. I've also driven much of the LH, including the path in IL as well as along I-80 in Wyoming during my aforementioned October 2004 road trip and during my trips back and forth to PA via RT 30. Unlike Route 66, the LH covers the United States, coast to coast. Maybe someday I'll find/have time to travel that ENTIRE route and, if I do, it'll be a planned event, similar to this one. LH map: http://www.lincolnhighwayassoc.org/info/ LH info: http://www.lincolnhighwayassoc.org/ Another is US ROUTE 20: http://www.usroute20.com/ ...which goes directly through my hometown of Elgin IL! So, I drive along it a lot each week ... as well as when I use RT 20 to go to Rockford, Freeport and Galena IL.... Another is US ROUTE 2: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/U.S._Route_2 And, of course, THE DIXIE HIGHWAY: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dixie_Highway **** PBS SPECIALS **** A program about Route 66 was broadcast on PBS a few times last year. It featured a mother and daughter traveling Route 66 in a rented Mustang convertible and highlighted several sites along Route 66, including the Wigwam motel (featured in the movie "Cars"). While preparing this cruise along Route 66, I watched the PBS special about the LINCOLN HIGHWAY...and my interest and enthusiasm for the LH increased. "A Ride Along the Lincoln Highway", an exploration of the nation's first coast-to-coast highway (NYC to San Francisco, spanning 14 states), was broadcast on Chicago's WTTW, Channel 11, Wednesday, October 29, 8p-9p. **** POSSIBLE BOOK OFFER **** ChevyTalk.org's hinckley wrote _Route 66 Backroads_: http://www.voyageurpress.com/Store/ProductDetails_40566.ncm He kindly had a copy mailed to me. I have reviewed it (and plan to read it completely soon); it is an AWESOME book. I hope that, for those planning to join us on this "convoy", Jim Hinckley's book may be purchased at a discounted price. I am in the process of ironing out those details. Once that is complete, I will advise further...so watch for updates! **** FUNDRAISERS **** These will be for non-profit organizations; details to be arranged. The Illinois Route 66 Heritage Project... http://www.illinoisroute66.com/ ...is the beneficiary while we meet at the Cozy Dog (Springfield IL) and The Ariston Cafe (Litchfield IL). The Adult Congenital Heart Association... http://www.achaheart.org ...is the beneficiary while we meet at the Cafe on the Route (Baxter Springs KS), the Big Texan Steak Ranch (Amarillo TX), the Wigwam Motel (Holbrook AZ); travel the longest uninterrupted stretch of RT 66 (Ash Fork AZ - Topock AZ); and visit (by arrangement) the Route 66 "Mother Road" Museum (Barstow CA). **** SPONSORSHIPS **** Yes, this trip is expensive. I hope to secure companies or groups as "sponsors" of portions of the trip (meals, hotels/motels, attractions, the "Cars" movie, gas stops, etc.) to assist with the costs and encourage more people to participate and more to donate to the worthy causes. KUDOS to one such sponsor ... the FIRST GENERATION MONTE CARLO CLUB! Dues paying FGMCC members who participate in this event for more than 100 miles will each receive a $25 gas card. In addition, the FGMCC will sponsor food for everyone at one stop in IL, up to $100. If you have suggestions of a company(s) or group(s) that might consider such a contribution to this event, please advise me. **** THE PEOPLE **** This is for ALL ages and levels of interest in Route 66. The FOCUS is OLDER cars, but newer cars are welcome, too! If you'd like to participate and want to ride with someone, please advise. We'll see what we can do to assist in making such arrangements. I'm posting this to various groups/clubs: ValveReplacement ACHAheart.org IL Monte Carlo Owners Group MI MC Group NY MC Club MC Mailing List El Camino ML GM Inside News Cheers and Gears 1st Gen MC Club 2nd Gen MC Yahoo Group 3rd Gen MCs 4th Gen MC SS MyMonte, 5th gen 2000montecarlo.net, 6th gen National MC Owners Association Monte Millennium Generations MC Forum WickedMontes ChevyTalk.org TriplePlate CarNuts.us RaceFansGarage FullThrottleV6 Please invite others of which you are a member...but, please advise me if anyone in your group decides to join us. **** PLANNING ASSISTANTS **** To ensure this is a success, I need some help planning. I'll KNOW I know it ... but can't figure it out just at that moment. 14. Found out today (Tuesday, November 11) that the '06 mc LTZ and the '07 mc LT have been sold..... BUT ... may've found something in this area to compete with the '78 Buick Riviera ... and I've been exchanging Emails with the owner.... '78 Caprice Classic sedan ...asking $1,400 ...from the pics, exterior looks great; I'm told the interior has some issues; light blue with vinyl top ...in the family since new ...80% of 100K + miles were highway ...repainted and headliner replaced, 1995 ...stock 305 V8 2bbl, well maintained ...RWD, but sedan ...Name = Blue Bandit Oh...and for those concerned about an older car through a winter, consider this: I paid around $5K for my '87 MC LS/CL in 2003. I have driven it in winter starting in 2003-2004. It has ALWAYS started in winter. My 2 brand new cars, for which I paid a combined total of over $40K easily and are LONG gone, can NOT claim the same thing.
  15. OMC
  16. Hmmm...it appears the '78 Caprice sedan i saw earlier is probably sold.... BUT, another option has entered the picture. I hope to go see it sometime next weekend (amid getting the older 4 MCs out, of course). In the meantime, the details.... '78 Buick Riviera ...asking $3400 ...from the pics, great exterior and interior; 2 tone tan ...according to the owner, only one rust spot (not an issue for me) ...the owner had been using it as his daily driver ...the list of options seems wonderful to me, and from what he's shared, sounds like a perfect daily driver/winter car.... ...RWD and a coupe ... but has a vinyl top ...Possible name = Golden Glory I couldn't quite tell ... just felt water under the driver's side seat when I went to move it up (power seats). Mileage ... under 100K, iirc. The goal depends on what I buy. As I mentioned in my original post: If I buy older ... the car would strictly be a "winter beater". If I buy newer, it would be a "winter beater / road warrior" (i.e. used in winter and for my road trips). I plan to keep this as long as possible . LOL! Yes, I know ... but, dammit...I like the styling changes for the '06 and '07 models ... even though those are STILL LUMINAs.... . *nods* I know.... I couldn't believe it when I saw it in person...lol. Thought about a Mustang, but not sure I want a Ford . And, yeah, a newer car would make more sense ... to be road trip worthy, too. Hmmm...that MC is an interesting choice. I also like that '76 Caprice, but it is a bit big . I'm not fond of the '91 and up Caprice bubbles.... CL is about the only thing I search these days ... but, sadly, most of the deals I find for cars I really want are 3+ hours away...irony rocks . True. I've thought about the Blazer. Heck, one of the vehicles I didn't mention (because I ultimately did not check it out in person) was a silver '06 Colorado.... Still, I've never been comfortable driving a bigger SUV/truck....
  17. Woo hoo .... good news!

  20. Over the last week, I've looked at a number of cars as a potential "winter beater" or "winter beater/road warrior"...3 of those on Saturday, November 8. I tend to come across either FWD coupes or RWD sedans. I'd prefer a RWD coupe.... '78 Caprice Classic sedan ...asking $3500 ...nice car, orange in color with tan vinyl top, but too good of condition to use as a winter beater, imo. ...not too keen on vinyl tops ... or the vinyl seats it had ... or it being a sedan. ...Possible name = Orange Flame '89 Caprice Classic sedan ...asking $2500 ...nice car on the outside; 2-tone blue. ...appeared to have some leaks into the interior and, when I drove it, the heater started making a very disturbing sound after a few minutes of being on. The sound was a mix between a fog horn and the buzzer on a morning alarm clock. ...Perfect winter beater, for sure ... but, a sedan? I don't have a family.... ...Name = Too Blue Bandit '87 El Camino ...asking $4000 ...interesting choice; 2-tone silver/gray. Had some rust (doesn't bother me), but a flat tire and the current owner not having insurance or license plates rendered me not able to test drive. ...seemed to run OK, but he had it running before I got there. AND...as I left, I noticed the windows starting to fog up. Aye. ...Known right away needs ... 4 new tires, windshield washer pump, heater core?, etc. ...Possible name = Gray Ghost '07 Dodge Charger ...Honda dealer asking ~$16,000 ... 35K miles; silver exterior with the gray/dark gray interior I prefer in these. ...Ironically, this had a flattening tire.... Didn't test drive, but did start the engine. Hmmm...ticking noise in the 3.5L V6. Plus, small stains on the seats. Ugh. ...I like the RWD, but not too keen on the sedan aspect. ...Name = Silver Streak '06 mc LTZ, FWD, non-flex fuel ...Chevy dealer asking ~$16,000 ... 30K miles (3.9V6); blue exterior, black interior with leather seats (ugh). ...Since this is priced similarly to the newer Charger, that kinda blows Ch#$r%*et's claims that ANYTHING FWD will be cheaper than ANYTHING RWD.... ...has the standup spoiler I like...and a sunroof. I know how much Mom and Dad love their sunroof in their Cobalt; I suspect I'd grow to like it, too. ...Yes, I TEST DROVE this one. Nice. Better handling than my former '00 mc LS "Green Hornet", but not as comfy as my '87 MC LS/CL. Speaking of which, the dealer I spoke with could NOT believe my '87 MC LS/CL had been driven in winter since 2003. Course, he also had the nerve to ask if I'd be trading it in.... ...Could I go back to FWD? Aye. It is a coupe, though. ...Name = Bruised Bandit '07 mc LT, FWD, flex fuel ...Hyundai dealer asking ~$13,000 ... 35K miles (3.5V6); white exterior, neutral (tan) interior with cloth seats. ...Haven't seen this one in person, but the pics look good. Standup spoiler I like, too! ...But, again, could I go back to FWD? ...Name = White Lie Of course ... the cars I'd PREFER are at least a 3-hour drive away ... '77 Caprice coupe, '78 Caprice coupe, '79 Caprice coupe, '86 MC LS, '88 MC LS/CL, inferno red '07 Dodge Charger, red jewel tintcoat '06 mc LT, etc. And, yes, I've considered a used GTO (not really something I want) or even a new Pontiac G8, but that's a dangblasted sedan.... If I buy older ... the car would strictly be a "winter beater". If I buy newer, it would be a "winter beater / road warrior" (i.e. used in winter and for my road trips). If I buy older, I stay well within my budget for extra insurance (and NO car payments). If I buy newer, I have higher insurance costs AND a monthly payment. Ugh. Decisions decisions. I know the choice is ultimately mine ... but, what would you do? Choose one of the above ... or keep looking? I believe I have time before the first measurable snowfall, but you never know.... And, actually, I don't HAVE to get another car ... my '87 MC LS has ALWAYS started in the winter, so I'd hate to replace it for year round ... but, if I want it to stay nice (i.e. not much rust), I kinda need to keep it out of the winter....
