Exactly. Though ... if it was a car that made my skin crawl, I might say something jokingly ... and see how she takes it.... *shrugs* Course, that would mean someone would want to date me...he heh. Lincoln vs. 66 ... and other old routes
knightfan26917 replied to knightfan26917's topic in The Lounge
Anyone else see the special on the Lincoln Highway this week? Just like the special PBS had last year about Route 66, the Lincoln Highway special increased my interest and enthusiasm for traveling the length of it one day. As I mentioned, I've traveled more of the Lincoln Highway than Route 66, by virtue of traveling in this area, specially IL RT 38 from Geneva IL west to Elburn IL and a bit beyond there ... as well as through Indiana, Ohio and PA along Route 30, which follows the Lincoln Highway more or less.... *sighs* If only I had more vacation time..... -
LOL! Well ... maybe I can rant about food next . Not wrong ... same attitude as me, more or less, anyway.... I'd take the Caprice Classic, though I'd prefer a '77-'79 model . *grins* Yes ... which is why I was intrigued to read more . LOL!

Cool. Should be an interesting switch ... warm weather to cold weather ... in the cold months of the year.... Where in PA will you be?
-
Ohhhh....AWESOME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! CONGRATULATIONS, Camino! Now ... I guess I need to get myself back to your neck of the PA woods, eh? Must be nice to have it out of the garage now! Woo hoo!!!!!!!!!

Heh ... I know the feeling. The last few weeks, one night I'll be up until 3 or 4 in the morning ... the next night, in bed before 10:30p. The nights I stay up so late are nights I check in on the forums ... because I can't sleep anyway. I pay for it the next day, of course. Arg. Anyway, glad it is a GOOD exhausted!

Kinda what I was thinking, too.... Course, being in a less congested area traffic wise IS appealing....

POLITICAL POWERLESSNESS... Aaaaahhhhhgggg! I cannot wait until the elections are over. I'm sssooo tired of the political mailings with messages directed at FAMILIES. Whenever I read "you and your family" or some resemblance thereof, I immediately send the mailing to the circular file. The best example of this was a mailing I received earlier this week. It started out innocent enough with this sentence: "Our research shows that you, Cort XXXX, are the type of voter that candidate XXXX aims to support." I was intrigued, so I kept reading ... partially because the mailing featured a pie chart/graph and some photos. Near the end of it, though, I came across this sentence: "We know you are the type of person who wants to provide for his wife and family and enjoy all that life has to offer." Uh, what? If you had DONE your freekin' research in the first place, you would KNOW that I do NOT have a wife...nor do I have kids of my own. Kinda makes me wonder what other research the candidate and his/her team has NOT done, or for that matter, what other facts the candidate and his/her team may ignore, not know, or not believe.... I suspect I don't want to know.... Speaking of NOT doing research accurately ... a few months ago, I received an offer for a deal on membership at a local club ... a percentage off a FAMILY membership. So, I called and asked how I could get a deal on a membership. The kind lady said, "You're not married?". "No," I replied. "Well, you MUST have a girlfriend." "No, no I don't." "Oh, so are you gay?" "NO!" Dead silence. "So, again, how can I get a deal on a membership?" Slight pause. "I guess you can't, since you don't have a family. But, that's strange ... I see our records indicate you are married." AYE! "That's not true; I've never been married. Just please take me off your mailing list." "OK, sir." *rolls eyes* But ... being single does have its perks ... including road trips whenever/wherever I want and nobody complaining I spend too much time with my five Monte Carlos.... Anyway, politics/politicians/campaigns are another example of how society in general is centered around couples and families. I don't think I've heard or seen or read from any candidate about how they want to help single people ... it's all been about helping single parents or families. So, I toss the mailings because, imho, when they address them to me "and my family" ... they aren't talking to me. I'd love for just one of those mailings to have a phone # for me to call...I'd ask a few questions of my own. FWD COUPE vs RWD SEDAN / WINTER... I'm not sure which of these is worse, in my book. As some of you may know, I've been searching for a winter beater ... a newer car that I can use on road trips as well or an older car to use during the winter. Since I bought it in mid-2003, my 1987 Monte Carlo Luxury Sport (RWD, mind you) has been the most-reliable car I've EVER owned, EVEN in the winter. BUT ... that reliability has helped some rust start to form ... and I really do not want to put it through another winter. Thus, the winter beater search. Problem is ... I either come across a FWD coupe or a RWD sedan, neither of which I want. I do not like FWD; and, since I have no family, I do not want a sedan. I know, I know. I should get a winter beater I do not like (in which case a FWD sedan would be perfect, eh?). BUT, I can't see me owning another car I do not like. I've been there, done that twice with 2 brand new Ch#$r%*ets, both of which were FWD (1 sedan; 1 coupe). Both of those are LONG gone, the second one having been replaced by my aforementioned '87 MC LS. But, I'm going to have to find something soon.... Better yet, though, I should just move south. I've hated the cold weather for a while now. I don't mind some cold and snow around Christmas and New Year's ... but, other than that, give me temperatures in the 60s, 70s and 80s. TIME AND A HALF... Course, in order to move south, I'd have to have a job first.... Speaking of jobs ... why do we humans work so damn much anyway? I mean, I know WHY ... to get money to do things and pay bills. But, most people I know (including myself) have little (2 weeks) to no vacation time. And, heaven forbid you need SURGERY for anything ... most companies take from your vacation allotment first ... so that, when you come back, you have NO vacation time left to do anything fun or anything you want. Please. I guarantee surgery is NOT a vacation. Yes, you might get time to rest and sleep, but recovering from surgery is NOT a picnic, despite what some believe. Then again, I guess not enough time in a day/week/month/year exists anyway. Frustratingly, I can never seem to find time to accomplish many things that I want to do.... Hmm...let's see those politicians do something about the vacation time people get...! They've been able to set a minimum wage, so why can't they set a MINIMUM VACATION AMOUNT ... say 20 days??!! Aye. DISAPPEARING ACT... When I started using a friend's garage/heated barn in Plato Center IL to house my older MCs, it was a nice country drive out west of Elgin to get them out ... and I had plenty of roads to drive and avoid most traffic. But in the last few years, one cannot drive between Elgin and what will soon be former Plato Center and NOT see homes, most of which I'll never be able to afford ... and all sitting along roads that, one day, will have to be turned into 3 or 4-lane "mega roads" to handle all of the additional traffic. On the BRIGHT side, the decline of "congestion free" roads has forced me to explore more roads west of Elgin ... and, in turn, discover some AWESOME routes to drive my MCs, about which I posted some time ago. Each time I've had my older MCs out in the last month or so, I've discovered MORE "country" roads. But ... like what happened to places along Route 66 ... with all of the building and "progress" continuing, several local places are starting to and will disappear: http://www.suburbanchicagonews.com/courier...HMAN_S1.article *sighs* OH...and one more thing ... Lincoln vs. 66 ... and other old routes
knightfan26917 replied to knightfan26917's topic in The Lounge
*** PROGRAM NOTE *** As I mentioned in my original post, PBS broadcast a special on Route 66. If I remember correctly, that show was broadcast a few times last year. It featured a mother and daughter traveling Route 66 in a rented Mustang convertible and highlighted several of the sites along Route 66, including the Wigwam motel (featured in the movie "Cars"). NOW ... PBS will broadcast a special about ... the Lincoln Highway: "A Ride Along the Lincoln Highway", 8p-9p CT, Wednesday, October 29, Chicago's WTTW, Channel 11 ...An exploration of the historic Lincoln Highway, the nation's first coast-to-coast highway, which runs from New York City to San Francisco and spans 14 states. Included: A Lincoln Highway Association National Conference in Evanston, WY; an Abraham Lincoln statue in WY; an independent gas station in NE; a Mexican restaurant in NJ. Motorcyclists on a cross-country journey. *** TRAVELING *** I have not driven much of RT 66, though I was along it somewhat during my October 2004 road trip... http://www.chevyasylum.com/cort/0410/0410.html ...and again a bit in Oklahoma City and through IL during my October 2006 trip: http://www.chevyasylum.com/cort/1106/1106.html BUT ... I may've actually driven more of the Lincoln Highway... ...mostly in IL, along IL RT 38 through Geneva IL ...somewhat during my aforementioned October 2004 road trip when I traveled from Denver CO to Salt Lake City UT via I-80 in Wyoming. ...and quite a bit traveling back and forth to PA, especially when I take RT 30 through Indiana and Ohio ... and then travel RT 30 in PA and into NJ... -
Sadly, I'm not sure...LOL! From #2, it sounds like you saw a '77 MC. From #3, it sounds like you are right on the '75.... About the taillights ... was the MC emblem on them at all? If not ... it could've been a '73 or '75. If so ... it could've been a '74, '76 or '77. I'm guessing it was not a '76 or '77, from your #3 note, as the '76 and '77 front side marker lights were in the lower chrome portion of the front fender, right in front of the wheel well. '76 taillights are like this: http://www.chevyasylum.com/cort/mc1976/76MC1007_07_JPG.html '77s are similar to the '76s, except, as you described, the top 1/3 of them or so are body colored...and "cut off". '74 taillights are similar to the '76, except the '74's are set into the car and do NOT wrap around. '75 taillights are like the '76, but have horizontal body colored slits through them ... and no emblem. '73 taillights are similar to the '74, but no emblem and feature horizontal chrome slits through 'em.... Does that help ... or make it worse?

QUOTE (FUTURE_OF_GM @ Oct 24 2008, 12:12 AM) I get the typical "How do you fit in a Focus?!" comments all of the time. LOL! I don't remember who now, but I know someone asked me that day we met for lunch if you really drove that Focus, given how tall you are: http://www.chevyasylum.com/cort/200711/RT1...e_Cars_JPG.html As for my cars ... too much to list. One of my favorites was the "gas guzzler" label for the '76 ... by a lady driving a huge Ford SUV ... and the same label for my '87 MC LS for the guy driving the Toyota Tundra...and showing him how good of gas mileage my '87 MC LS gets! Good night shirt tail ... how long were you waiting at the pharmacy??? I like old and new cars, too...for the most part, but of course, I like more so the older cars. I'm wondering now if the lowered gas prices (LESS THAN $3 per gallon in my part of Chicagoland) will take away from the alternative fuel programs ... I hope not, because you never know.... ALSO...in searching for a winter beater, I may have to decide between a FWD coupe and a RWD sedan ... either way, I lose. I don't like FWD...and I don't want a sedan because I'm single... *sighs* Cort | 35swm | "Mr Monte Carlo"."Mr Road Trip" | pig valve.pacemaker WRMNshowcase.legos.HO.models.MCs.RTs.CHD = http://www.chevyasylum.com/cort "This might not be good" ...
