Dream car garage, Billy Idol, Eyes Without a Face edition.
balthazar replied to A Horse With No Name's topic in The Lounge
That SD421 was a stone cold killer on the track. Mercedes bought it, shipped it to Germany and tore it down. Some have said it was instrumental in the MB 6.9L V8 (417 CI), tho that was far far short of the power output the 421 had. -
I'm holding out hope for an inline 8; smooth as molten glass. I mean, since we're going back to the 1950s here...

Would love the '42 GM 'Super Pontoon Special' for a daily driver : '38 Studebaker COE delivery for a truck : '69 AMC AMX/2 for a sports car : '63 Pontiac Tempest SD421 for a race car, finished the below race EIGHT laps over the ferrari GTO : '49 GM Corsair for a family hauler : -
There's an issue right off the bat: MB recently juggled their SUV/CUV nameplates to make more "sense", moving them all to 'Gxx'…. outside of the vans, which for some strange reason have actual words as names. If MB named this rebadge with an actual name, built them all in refrigerator white with black steel rims, it would fit the commercial 'pattern'. However, articles are already branding these 2 concept vehicles as 'luxury trucks' and drawing lines to other established luxury trucks, so if MB doesn't build them that way, they will be looked upon as failures to compete. So their vehicle plans are being made for them. And not only does naming them (so far) as 'X-class' directly counter the idea that these would be commercial small trucks, it ALSO suggests that… according to the realigned MB naming convention… that the 'X' supersedes the S-class as the top of the line, since the deeper you go into the alphabet, the more you spend. That's an problem, besides the fact that the MB naming convention, despite 're-alignment, remains bewildering at best once you get into it. So it's courting floppage on numerous counts beyond the obvious 'rebadged nissan' shame, and we've still not seen any production version.

Particular to the Ford flathead; independent per-side cooling systems. Probably largely (or completely) due to the fact the valves are north of the cylinder in the block; no room. Water pumps also function as front motor mounts.
-
UPDATE : • Changed out the gaskets behind the dual water pumps- they were weeping a bit last time the cooling system was full. Used some gasket sealer this time. • Got new universal electric 6-volt fuel pump. Hooked it up & turned the toggle on and it pumped fine, but it seemed to overpower the carb rather than shut off when full. Not supposed to need a regulator when it's to spec like this one is (2-4 PSI), but many people run these in series with the mechanical pump, and mine was bypassed decades ago- don't know why. Need to research. • Began addressing the brake bleeding- had to file / bend a small wrench in order to be able to work the bleeders.

Tesla Reports First Profit after 12 Quarterly Losses!
balthazar replied to G. David Felt's topic in Tesla
Article above says credits sales rose $100M, but revenue went up $1.3B, so it's not primarily from credit sales. That said, I believe, given Tesla's track record, that this is more 'juggling' rather than a hard turn towards solvency. Also note that IF the boost is due to the new lowest base price Model S, Tesla just announced the cancellation of the lowest base price Model X. In the woods, indeed. -

Funny you should say that; the manufacturer is B. F. Cummins. Patent dates are 1889-1892.
-
It's for stamping the initials / name into the 'sweatband' of men's hats. A Cummins Hatter's Press. Makes letters like this :

Well… yes, but what?

Your "problem" Horsey is; you're a lover, not a hater. As in, you see beauty in EVERYTHING. I get that now. - - - - - - Give me a spoon, please.

How the F did this morph into the 'Clapped Out Junk Thread' ??? And… really ?? This is neither 'beautiful' nor 'clapped out', so we must be running a 3rd overlapping thread.

She's still driving it, up to 110K. Jeep is a 3rd vehicle.

Not that it's a racing series that interests me… frankly the pace cars are more interesting IMO than the race cars… but poo on the heads of the Indy guys who decided/alllowed this.

This is the '56 XP-500, known as the 'Free Piston' concept car, heavily similar to the '56 Firebird II (which was turbine-powered, is white, and still owned by GM). Don't know exact when this shot was taken, but that's the '87 Pontiac Pursuit concept in front of it. Wonder where this one was heading, and where it is now?

Just curious. If you recall, post your first monthly car loan payment amount, and your most recent (assuming the two are for different vehicles). 1994 : $231/month : '94 F-150. Sticker price was $16,016. current : $141/month : wife's '11 Jeep (bought in Feb).

Ultimate Dream Garage: Special Edition er....Edition
balthazar replied to Frisky Dingo's topic in The Lounge
I don't get the 'these are your only vehicles' restriction. No one is going to use special edition/ rare vehicles as their only transportation. Anyways, here's 3 I like : 1956 DeSoto Fireflite Pacesetter, about 400 built, dealers given stencils to letter cars like the actual Pace Car ~ 1962 Pontiac Grand Prix Super Duty 421, 16 built ~ 1963 Studebaker GT Super Hawk R-2, 176 built ~ -
It just came to my attention that the last FIFTEEN Indy 500 pace cars have been Chevys. What happened to mixing it up, like was done from 1911-2001 ??

It's quite possible it's already hurting them- take a look at their U.S. sales numbers, esp the cars. Auto making is generally a serious venture, but there is real comedy involved when BMW bothers to put camo on next gen vehicles. We ALL know EXACTLY what it's going to look like; you're wasting time/money with that.
