We're going to leave for St. Louis in half an hour or so. I wanted to rent a convertible, but my only options were a Solstice (kinda need someplace for my son to sit) and a Mustang, which would have been crazy-expensive. Looks like its another cross-state trek in the Mini.

Hyundai has been putting an effort into building acceptable cars and convincing people that buying one isn't an awful idea. GM hasn't been able to do both those things for any of their 8 brands. Hell, Hummer is the only brand they were able to pull it off with and that didn't turn out to well in the end.

Its always been my mission to give, if asked, my opinion, but not to try to be an overbearing prick, telling them what to buy.

Trust me, I held the opinion that the GTO looked like a Cavalier long before you got your panties in a wad on here today.

The GTO really did look like a 90's generic blob. Looking at it, there was nothing that said "GTO" or "Pontiac" just "I'm listening to Blind Melon while drinking a Zima."

The Miata is very clearly a Mazda. Even if you didn't see the Ibuki concept that previewed the current generation, you can look at it and see its a Miata.

Buy Saturn, get Opel free? That would be a way for someone to get some cars and a large, globalish dealer network without too much work. Lets say Chery gives GM a few hundred million for Saturn, if GM throws Opel in with it and if they can continue to sell the current product line. Saturn and Opel could continue to tread water while Chery tries to get their Chinese designed and made vehicles into the U.S. and Europe using somewhat established nameplates.

Appearance-wise, no. They could have gone to any other brand and wouldn't have looked out of place.

I'm going to pour money into the Buick once the engine gets put back in. Its going to get new tires and a new stereo. The other cars get work done at the dealership, at least until the maintenance plans run out.

Ok, I'll dumb down my wording since apparently none of you could figure out where I was going. The G8--Take away the hood scoops and Pontiac badge and it could be an Impala or Caprice or Park Avenue, not an "original" design. The Solstice--Had the concept been badgeless, it could have gone to any of GM's brands because its a jellybean. Literally, it looks like a jelly bean. The GTO--Take away the Pontiac badge and it could have been a Monte Carlo, a Wildcat, a Nova or a Cavalier Z57. The Fiero and Trans Am are the only really original Pontiacs of the last couple of decades, and last time I checked neither has been in the showroom for a while.

The G8 is an Impala with hood scoops. The Solstice/Solstice Targa are jellybeans that could belong to any brand if you pop the badge off.

So, you admit you didn't buy the car *because* it was a Pontiac, just one of the last GM cars to carry that particular engine. Just strengthens my case that Pontiac is redundant. Seems to me that if the 3.1 was the selling point, and the GP hadn't been around in '02, you probably would've wound up on another Malibu or a Century.

Whats true and what people think is true are two different things. Just look at this thread. Pontiac has been on its deathbed since the 80's, yet there are people clinging to it as if the brand offers something original.
