Rumorpile: Scratch 1.4T Out: Jetta and Beetle To Get 1.8T

    April 29, 2012

For the past six months, we've been following rumors about what will replace Volkswagen's 2.5L five-cylinder engine that is used in the Jetta, Golf, Beetle, and Passat.

Last November, a report from Car & Driver stated the 2.5L will be replaced by a 1.8T. Then in January, Volkswagen executives hinted the Jetta, Beetle, and Golf could get the 1.4T that will be under the hood of the upcoming Jetta Hybrid.

Now, Car & Driver reports the 1.8T for the Jetta, Beetle, and Golf is back on the table according to a source. Car & Driver speculates with Volkswagen's ambitious sales goal by 2018, it will be more efficient and more cost-effective to minimize the number of engines it offers.

    • Would love one in a EV powertrain, especially the last Convertible!

    • Yes, seems weekly shootings happen, and the gun nuts do not seem to understand why better controls over how gets guns is desired by the public. So tired of the innocent shooting of people over Gangs, family issues, etc. Columbine was sad, even sadder was Sandy Brook Elementary school. I totally disagreed with the mother who said she wanted to bond better with her mentally reduced son and picked guns and shooting. No commonsense person would give a person with mental reduction in thinking a weapon one would hold but seems the gun nuts have to have their guns.,
    • It's a very sad thing that school and shopping center shootings just seem to run together in one's memory these days ... or you miss knowing about some from the news. It used to be that they were rare and very shocking that you remember them very clearly, meaning where, when, etc.  I'm talking Columbine, for example. Last night, someone visiting SoCal from Reno told me there was a shooting in the valet area of the GSR, formerly the MGM Grand Reno, where he had moved to from SoCal.  I hadn't even heard of this. I just looked it up.  Sadly, it's a true story.
