As the Diesel Emits: Audi Might Have To Buy Back 25,000 Q7s

It was thought that Audi wouldn't need to do a buyback for the 3.0L TDI V6. That appears to be wrong.

It was thought that the 3.0L TDI V6 used primarily in Audi vehicles (along with the Porsche Cayenne and Volkswagen Touareg) would not have to be bought back unlike the 2.0L TDI four-cylinder. But this might not be the case for a select group of vehicles.

German newspaper Der Spiegel reports that Audi could buy back 25,000 vehicles - older Q7 SUVs - because these vehicles cannot be fixed and will need to be bought back. This comes from preliminary discussions between Audi U.S. authorities about a possible fix for the engine.

"We are working hard with U.S. regulators to reach an agreement an approved resolution for affected 3.0-liter V-6 TDI vehicles and thank our customers for their continued patience. The Court has scheduled a status conference for November 3, 2016 to discuss the matter further," said Audi in a statement to Automotive News.

Still maybe mid way point for them, but my gut tells me there is plenty more auto's for them to buy back.

How cool is it to be an Audi owner right now? Drove that POS for a year or two.. hated the BS going into and out of service constantly.. then finding out that the Kraut Bastards that sold it to U had to buy it back.. so U could go and buy a superior GM or Ford product. 8)

They will talk these 25,000 people into buying a new Q7 with the turbo 4 so that they can have their 1487th consecutive month of sales gains.

That's also what I think. There will be some sale gain to brag about for VW. Financially, though, it will be another story for the company...

Like every other automaker out there, Audi is looking to electrify their lineup, that includes models from the Audi Sport division that produces the S and RS models for Audi.
At the 2018 LA Auto Show, Audi introduced the E-tron GT Concept, based on the same platform as the Porsche Taycan.  The concept featured a dual-motor all-wheel drive setup producing 582 horsepower and about 600 lb.-ft of torque.  Powering that was a 96 kWh battery that Audi claimed would give a range of 250 miles and a 0-62 mph of 3.5 seconds. The production version will debut at the 2020 LA Auto Show, but we don't know yet if it will sport the same three tiers that the Porsche Taycan has with similar specs.   It is expected that the base E-tron GT will have a lower output and lower price than the Taycan.  The base model and S variant should be available at launch while the RS will follow along later.
In addition to the Audi E-tron GT, Audi Sport is busy working on electrified version of their RS models.  These will be plug-in hybrids, the first of which is expected to be the RS4 around the 2022 model year and then proceed up the line.  Since SUVs are all the rage, Audi is also working on an RS version of their E-tron Sportback SUV to compete head to head with the Tesla Model Y Performance.  The current E-tron Sportback makes a maximum of 402 horsepower in boost mode with its dual motors.  Audi has hinted that a third motor could be introduced for even more performance.
Audi will also take a second stab at an R8 E-tron.  The first one appeared in 2015 as a second generation R8, but was only in production for 16 months due to low demand, largely blamed on its $1.1 million price tag. Only 100 copies of the original R8 E-Tron were built. It used a dual motor setup pushing 456 hp and 679 lb.-ft of torque to the wheels with a promised range of up to 280 miles.  The next version of the R8 E-tron will likely see a power boost, but Audi is also working on bringing the price down to a more reasonable (for a supercar) price. Even with a substantial reduction in price, the R8 E-tron will likely only be a limited production model.

    • How do you take a drivers enjoyable car with lack luster HP/Torque and make it a blast to drive? Convert it to Electric. Latest project is one that took a Toyota 86, a car well known for driving dynamics much like a Miata and removing the lack luster ICE powertrain and going Electric with one from a Nissan Leaf. Yes they say they could have gone straight 6 of LS V8, but in this case it was easier and more straight forward to change out to the Nissan Leaf EV powertrain. https://www.thedrive.com/news/31967/nissan-leaf-swapped-toyota-86-is-an-electric-torque-monster

In 2010 if you bought an EV, you paid an average price of $1,100 per Kilowatt Hour compared to at the end of 2019 the price had fallen to $156 per Kilowatt hour. 87% price drop in 9 years and expected for the 2023 model year of EVs the price will be at $100 per Kilowatt hour. • 400 miles was $30k half the price. I honestly thought the same thing when I originally priced it out over the holiday break, but then thought about this as just like @balthazar auto project that he has been working on for years, this will take me a few years too and the last thing to buy and install will be the battery pack. As such, I expect big changes to happen in the battery industry over the next 18 to 24 months and costs to come down considerably by the time I purchase the batteries. I am also going to update the interior with new carpet, insulation, etc. All things bulbs will be replaced with LEDs, so this is a long term project for me, I am excited to start.
