    Fiat Dealers Anxious For More Products

    Despite rising sales of Fiat 500 in the past few months, some Fiat dealers are finding it difficult to break even.

    "I'm struggling to break even. With the one car in a small (volume) segment, it's a tough go right now," said Gary Brown, owner of a Fiat dealer on Long Island and chairman of the Chrysler Dealer Council.

    Dealers are very antsy get to new products such as the new 500L later this year as it should help bring more people into Fiat dealers.

    "The four-door (500L) is really going to be a shot in the arm. It will put a franchise on more people's radar as they are shopping for a small car," Brown said.

    But the one product lineup Fiat dealers are still wondering about is Alfa Romeo. The 4C sports car is due in the U.S. later this year or early next year. After that, who really knows. Several Fiat dealers told Reuters that Fiat has postponed a meeting discussing new products twice and that a new date hasn't been set.

    When asked about the meetings, a Fiat spokesman declined to comment.

    No one should really be surprised by this as they failed in the US before and their cars are not that great. They have a limited market appeal and Fiat does not really seem dedicated to a global business. Ton's of Fiats sit on the dealership lots and few move.

    Fiat dealer which is part of a Dodge, Chrylser and jeep franchise in the greater Seattle area allows the folks to cross sale you anything. You rarely find sales people in the show room for the Fiats as they just have limited appeal in a suburban area.

      Trying to figure out what is coming down the pipeline at Alfa Romeo is an exercise in frustration. It seems a month doesn't go by without something changing, whether it be a new model or plans being scrapped for another. Automotive News has done their best to figure out what's in and out for Alfa Romeo.
      Let's begin with what has been scrapped. First is the flagship sedan to take on the likes of the BMW 5-Series and Mercedes-Benz E-Class. This sedan would have used an extended version of the Giulia's RWD platform known as Giorgio. Second is a larger roadster that would have shared the platform and powertrains of the Giulia. The roadster being shelved is due to global sales of roadsters declining. 
      So what's left in the pipeline? There is large crossover that will share the underpinnings with the upcoming Stelvio. This model is being primarily aimed for the Chinese and U.S. markets. The other is a Giulia coupe that will take on the BMW 4-Series. Expect a similar engine lineup to the sedan. No date was given for either model.
      One model still up in the air is the possible replacement for the Giulietta compact. Alfa Romeo is running the numbers to see whether it makes sense to go with rear-wheel drive with a shortened Giorgio platform or stick with front-wheel drive.

      Motor Trend reports that in a video posted on Fiat Chrysler Automobile's YouTube page, there is a crossover on Fiat's Cassino assembly plant in Italy that appears to be going through an inspection. We can pick out a front end that is similar to the Giulia sedan and a coupe-like roofline. Comparing this shot with recent spy shots of the Stelvio and we can say with some confidence, this is the upcoming Stelvio. It should be noted that Cassino is home to the Giulia, a vehicle that will be sharing its platform with the Stelvio.
      Alfa Romeo is planning to reveal the Stelvio later this year at the LA Auto Show.

      The automotive industry in the U.S. has been enjoying one of the best years in terms of sales. But one segment is seeing a drop in their sales. That segment is the midsize sedan.
      Automotive News reports that the demand for midsize sedans is at a five-year low. The numbers tell this sad story. In the first quarter of 2016, sales of midsize sedans dropped 3.4 percent. The second quarter saw sales dropped 13 percent, while the third quarter saw a whopping 21 percent drop. For the month August, all 16 midsize sedans saw an average drop of 27 percent. The Ford Fusion, Hyundai Sonata, Kia Optima, and Nissan Altima reported drops of over 30 percent.
      Automakers have been throwing money on the hoods of their midsize sedans to try and ignite sales. But this tactic isn't working.
      Why are midsize sedan sales down? It comes down to consumers wanting crossovers and SUVs.
      "It doesn't matter how deep you discount the leisure suit and bell-bottoms -- nobody's going to buy them if they're not fashionable. I don't think they're ever going to go away, but there's a lot more people who don't consider them anymore," said Eric Lyman, vice president of industry insights at TrueCar. 
      The outlook for midsize sedan sales doesn't look good as we enter fall and winter.
      "That larger sedan buyer just sees more value in the SUVs or CUVs," said Mike DeSilva, co-owner of Liberty Hyundai in Mahwah, N.J. "That's just where the activity is. And heading into the end of summer and going into winter, we're really going to get into SUV season."
