Infiniti is trying to differentiate itself from the other players in the luxury car market by possibly developing a four-door coupe as a flagship. This is coming from Nissan's executive vice president Andy Palmer to Automotive News.

"We won't do a Merc S class or that type of car. We have had that before. We want a flagship car that's appealing and different," said Palmer.

The four-door coupe is reportedly taking nspiration from the Infiniti Essence concept shown at the 2009 Geneva Motor Show. Sources say Nissan design chief Shiro Nakamura's team is looking at how to stretch the dimensions of the Essence concept to add two extra doors and seats. This new model could also use Mercedes-Benz's new rear-drive modular platform and be introduced in 2017 at the earliest.

But Palmer says the plan for flagship haven't been the greenlight. For that to happen, Infiniti needs to move a fair number of vehicles such as the Q50 sedan and QX60 crossover.

They will need to do more than just move a few Q50 and QX60's. Start with actually getting something more than bland design language. Infinity seems to be on life support as you see many sit on the dealer lots but not many moving about in traffic.

Infiniti today released a teaser image of an upcoming crossover coupe due to be shown at the Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance this year.  The QX55 will slot between the QX50 and QX60 in the lineup but will borrow heavily from the QX50 platform.  Not much is known about the crossover except that it will likely be a front-wheel drive based vehicle and feature Infiniti's new 2.0 liter variable compression engine.
Infiniti says the QX55 will be in dealerships in Summer of 2020.

Yesterday we reported that Nissan may be cutting up to 10,000 jobs.... we were short by about 2,500. Nissan Motor Company's CEO Hiroto Saikawa said "The results were really more negative than we expected" in a financial briefing at Nissan Headquarters.  Operating profit was nearly wiped out, falling to just $14.8 million in the first fiscal quarter ending June 30th.  Operating margin shrank from 4.0 percent last year to barely 0.1 percent this year.  Global retail volume fell 6.0% to 1.23 million vehicles.
On the back of these poor results. Nissan has annouced job cuts of up to 12,500 worldwide as part of a plan to revive the company.  Of that, 6,400 job cuts are already underway with 1,420 jobs lost in the U.S.  An additional 6,100 job cuts are planned over the next 4 years. Most of the job cuts will be at plants that are working below capacity.
In the U.S., Nissan is trying to move away from fleet sales and focus on increasing retail sales, with the goal of boosting retail sales by 100,000 units.

    • Someone punched it in the nose and now it has a smashed face. South Korean Gov is a tax credit, local provincial govs are giving refunds. Their goal is to flip the country which is the size of Mississippi, Indiana, Minnesota or Portugal or Hungary to being ICE free by 2030 for NEW AUTO Sales with the goal of having all ICE Auto's off the road by 2075. Exceptions are for Class 8 semi trucks / commercial use. I honestly can see them going this way, same for Japan and China.
    • I like the current Lincoln look, and within the lens of 2019/2020, they're nice.  Are they knocking my socks off or standing head & shoulders above all else? Not in my opinion. I may have overstated in my earlier post, but not completely. I would like to see something new that takes my breath away stylistically. When I walked around a couple of C7 Corvettes, that was pretty close. I do think the current Ram (and the last few generations) have been extremely good designs. CT6. What else tho?
    • Not even Lincoln? I think their new styling has really come into its own.
