New Trademark Filings Possibly Give A Clue To Mercedes' EV Subbrand

      Is it EQ?

Earlier this week, we reported on the rumor that Mercedes is planning a new subbrand for electric vehicles that might launch towards the end of the decade. Now, Autocar has found a number of trademark applications by the German automaker possibly revealing the name of this new subbrand.

The applications filed in the United Kingdom revolve around the letters EQ and includes such names as,

    • EQA
    • EQC
    • EQE
    • EQG
    • EQS
    • EQ Inside
    • EQ Boost
    • Generation EQ

Autocar speculates some of the names could be used for electrified versions of current models (ex: EQC for C-Class). EQ Boost might be used for hybrid models.

We know Mercedes is planning to show an electric SUV concept next month at the Paris Motor Show. This might be where we learn if EQ is the name or not.

Tesla does not have one of these:

    mercedes-maybach-vision-6.jpg?itok=LDblH

Full reveal and details Thursday.  They have to find a way to get this to production.

Granted this is far better looking than the Tesla S which I honestly do not like and think the Karma is far better looking auto in the same price range.

MB needs to dump those stupid looking thin wing like rear view mirrors and just go with camera stubs that have been approved in Japan already so that you get a full view in your center stack of both sides and rear.

MB also needs to dump the stand up emblem and use a 3D hologram type emblem on the hood. That is the one item that is just so dated on this concept, that stand up emblem.

MB hopefully will make the doors gullwing or suicide type. If your going to do the concept right, then they better not have standard normal door openings.

Right, just like the Exelero- 13 years later and still not in production.

Mercedes loves to build concepts they never produce.

Sounds a lot like every other mfg.

Most build concepts they never intend to produce are a showcase for new styling, new technology etc and see consumer reaction.

After some more thought to the naming of MB EV lineup could still utilize the CLA, C, E, CLS, S but like it was brought up(by balty, I think) because the number once signified engine size now make it the battery pack size.

CLA70e - gives the size of car that can be used once ICE are gone w/ keeping the name of a car that is already recognized, lists the battery size, and that it's electric(a little redundant but that's just how it would kind of have to be)

I'll use Tesla's battery size for an example.

    E60e

    E75e

    E90e

And if they feel the need to signify AWD throw a little 'x' on the end. E70ex. And in 20 years when all they are selling is EVs you can drop the 'e'.

So Tesla doesn't have a concept car that has yet to be been announced, much less released? Excuse me if I'm not convinced here. It also screams Buick Avista to me just on first look. Edited by surreal1272

I would imagine the Vision 6 has a V12 engine. They could get a version of this to production, something that Tesla or most other luxury automakers would never take the chance on. Keep in mind this coupe is 236 inches long.

Mercedes did build the McLaren SLR, the gullwing SLS, the G63 6x6 G550 4x4squared, S-class convertible, and the Maybach S600 Laundelet is returning next year. They do build some dream cars, I think they will act on this one because they need a Maybach halo and they see Rolls and Bentley increasing sales and want a piece.

Of course Tesla won't do it. Who would have thought that an EV car company would not build a gas powered V12? Good grief man. What kind of comparison is that? What this V12 overpriced Benz has to do with competing in the EV market I haven't the foggiest.

I meant Tesla would't make a large coupe or a really dramatic looking car.  They make a sleek looking car, but 4-door sedan and crossover is all you get at Tesla, no other body styles.   What if the Mercedes-Maybach has batteries under that hood?

It wont handle better than the Tesla Model S.

It probably wouldnt out accelerate it either.

Therefore inferior product as compared to Tesla Model S in that high performance regard so bragging rights could be waved off...

Tesla flaunts and does not hide the fact that the Model S is a high performance machine.

Mercedes-Maybach has to find a way to market this vehicle where the heavy batteries are under the hood in a way to lure Tesla consumers without the high performance image....and by the looks of that concept, it has high performance shoes to fill in.

    Good luck wit dat!

?Why? BMW is still using 'i' for 'injected' 45 years later!  lol

Lol I hadn't really realized that's almost exactly what Tesla does.. But they kind of mimicked what MB has been doing just with battery size instead of engine size. I mean they could always add an extra zero like they already have. I mean they were 3.5L but still added a "0" for 350. They could do the same with batteries.. But then it's basically the same they have now again..

So the official specs are in, 4 electric motors with 738 hp and an 80 kW battery.  222 inches long, so it is more like 5.7 meters rather than 6.   If this is a sign of what is to come from Mercedes electric cars, look out Tesla and wimpy BMW with their carbon fiber box.

Being the Maybach, they aren't going for all out performance.  A Tesla is faster than a Rolls-Royce Phantom, heck and Audi A8 is faster than Rolls-Royce Phantom, but is it better?  The Maybach coupe is about over the top luxury and style, and it would still be pretty fast.  They could do an AMG electric, (like a better battery version of the SLS electric car) or an AMG hybrid that has Telsa Ludicrous mode performance.

They can't sell an E60e, E70e, etc because they already have a C300e, GLE550e, S550 and next year have GLS550e, E300e or E550e, maybe both, a GLC300e, etc.  They are going to have 10 plug in hybrids already using "e" after the name.

Then its a different vehicle all together waaaaay beyong what a Model S is all about...

YOU yourself made that distinction with the S Class...

THIS is a COUPE besides all that.

The Tesla Model S is a 100 000 dollar sports sedan.

The S Class is a 100 000 dollar plus cruiser.

The Tesla image is a hot thing right now and that is why the Model S is winning the sales wars with the S Class in this realm of 100 000 dollar cars.

If M-B will produce this concept it has to figure a way to get this car to be a hot item.

It is also going against a very sexy Aston Martin...

This car is fighting a war on 2 fronts.

The last time the Germans and M-B as it seems fought a war on 2 fronts, they lost big time.

So, a sure to be more than $300K MAYBACH (stop sugarcoating it here) is your convincing argument against a $100K Tesla?

    I have no words.

222 inches long to make production is unlikely, but maybe at 210, and it would have to be an 3 inches taller, to get a bit more side glass and green house, this concept is only 52 inches tall.   Those are 24 inch wheels, obviously they would go to 20s, real mirrors, and they aren't that far off.  They already know how to do gullwing doors, they could build this, and charge $300,000+ for it.  The question is will they build it?   I think they should, it would set a styling tone, and kick off their electric brand in grand fashion.

So you don't even know if they will actually build it (they won't build anything near that come production time) yet you think it's Tesla killer? You do understand the term "vapor ware" right?

Going to weight in here on the maybach :

    • It has an actual trunk!

    • The wheels are… interesting. Would like to see them in person; hard to tell exactly what's going on. It could work with 24s, I think anything smaller would throw off the look. But it's going to ride like crap.

    • I like the 'off' proportions, mostly because I'm BORED with commonplace proportions.

    • Needs to swap the Buick grille out for something unique/proprietary.

    • Needs to drop the Rolls Royce pilfered door handles; a blatant copy.

    • Greenhouse HAS to grow by at least 5 inches, but I'd keep the overall length or close to it.

I like it. Keeping in mind it's a pie in the sky concept, I'll give it a 8/10.

    But it'll never get built.

    I also like this concept.

I like the grille as it works superbly on this design and the proportions of the car.

I LOVE long hood/short deck designs.

What I dont like is the rake of the windshield is too sleek.

Resulting in another thing I dont like about it.

You mentioned it....there is no visibility.....

And the back window.....I like fastbacks, but this concept  hardly has a C Pillar.....I mean it has a C Pillar, but I like a car where there is some sort of back and its not just 'fast' on a fastback...

    But very sexy concept.

Mercedes has always put out crazy concept cars that never make production but get great headlines. That's all it's about it getting people to talk about them more. No way would a production car look anything like this. If they do it'll basically be an AMG GT already but longer.. Blend an AMG GT and an SLS.

If they super wealthy clientele push for it, I could see them building a limited run, they can charge a crazy price and build 500 a year.  You never know, they built all this stuff:
