What's Powering The New Pathfinder, Plus A Surprise At New York

Nissan showed off a concept version of the new Pathfinder at the 2012 North American International Auto Show last week, but didn't disclose many details. But, Motor Trend has found out some information about what will powering it.

A source at Nissan tells Motor Trend that the production version of the new Pathfinder will use Nissan's 3.5L V6. This makes sense since the Pathfinder is Nissan’s version of the new Infiniti JX35, which uses the same powertrain. Horsepower and torque hasn't been revealed, but we're guessing 265 HP and 248 lb-ft of torque like in the JX. A CVT transmission will likely be the only transmission option. The production version of the Pathfinder will be shown at next month's Chicago Auto Show.

More interesting though is that Nissan told Motor Trend that at the New York Auto Show, the company will premiere a new vehicle that no one outside the company has seen before.

I think the new Pathfinder looks good for a CUV. In profile, it resembles a new Durango, imo. It is not as squat and wide looking as a new Explorer (which struck me as Ford's Pacifica when following one the other day). And it has stuck with Nissan's sweet, bullet-proof V6 engine, for uncomplicated, reliable performance over the life of the vehicle.

I'm also happy that the Xterra is sticking with its body-on-frame design.
