All-New 2027 Volkswagen Atlas Debuts in New York

At the New York International Auto Show, Volkswagen unveiled the third-generation Atlas, built on an all-new MQB evo platform with a redesigned bold loop interior, a 282-horsepower engine, and a 15-inch touchscreen on most trims. It goes on sale in fall 2026.

    Exterior Design

The new Atlas adopts a sharper, more geometric front end. Double-stacked LED headlights run the full width of the nose, and an illuminated VW badge is standard on all trims except the base. Three new exterior colors join the Atlas palette for 2027: Blackberry, Sacramento Green, and Sandstone.

Volkswagen describes the cabin architecture as a "bold loop" cockpit design, a sweeping dashboard structure that creates a visual separation between the driver-focused zone and the passenger side. Real wood trim is now standard across the lineup, and a column-mounted shift lever replaces the previous floor-mounted unit, freeing up the front center console. Three interior color palettes are available.

    Technology

The base trim receives a 12.9-inch touchscreen; every other trim steps up to a 15-inch display. A 10.25-inch Digital Cockpit Pro instrument cluster is standard across the range. Qi2 dual wireless charging accommodates two devices simultaneously, and a new Driver Experience Dial puts drive mode selection within easy reach. Volkswagen's Premium Speech AI is included with a one-year trial subscription. Rear sunshades and a power liftgate are standard on all trims, and a 14-speaker Harman Kardon audio system is available on the top trim.

    Safety

The 2027 Atlas adds a front center airbag, bringing the total to seven. Volkswagen has upgraded IQ.DRIVE Travel Assist, and a new Emergency Assist feature can guide the vehicle to a controlled stop and alert emergency services if it detects an unresponsive driver.

    Powertrain and Capability

Under the hood sits an updated 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder (the EA888 evo5), now producing 282 horsepower and 258 lb-ft of torque, a gain of 13 horsepower over the outgoing engine. Volkswagen expects improved fuel economy, though EPA figures are not yet available. 4Motion all-wheel drive remains available, towing capacity is rated at 5,000 pounds, and a hybrid powertrain is planned for a midcycle update.

The 2027 Atlas will be assembled at Volkswagen's Chattanooga, Tennessee plant, with sales expected to begin in fall 2026. Pricing has not been announced. The Atlas and Atlas Cross Sport combined accounted for roughly 30% of Volkswagen's U.S. sales in 2025.

I think it has a pretty sharp looking front end now. That seems much improved. The lighting elements could maybe be a little larger.

The interior looks like a nice place to occupy, but the damn screen that "isn't attached" all the way around drives me a little nuts. I also like how they use the center console area with the storage underneath (I know quite a few companies are utilizing this space now, and I like it). It looks like a good overall family hauler.

HOWEVER, the one glaring issue and the one reason I wouldn't consider it, is the 2.0T engine. So they already had the 2.0T in the Atlas but they're giving it a few extra ponies but it's going to have LESS torque??? I just can't see a world where a vehicle this size should lose torque, unless the new torque curve is drastically different and produces all of its peak from like 1000-2500rpm. It just seems like it'll be a dog to drive around. I realize people don't need or want racecars as daily drivers or family vehicles, but I've already heard from a couple people who compared the current 2.0T to the VR6 and they hated how the 2.0T drove in comparison. Both ended up in a VR6 Atlas.

Kind of boring design still, which is a VW theme, a lot of forgettable cars.  The 2 liter turbo is probably fine in every day driving, but if this thing were loaded with people or going up hills, then I bet that engine has to work really hard and I don't know if they have gotten better, but long term reliability was never a hallmark of the VW/Audi 2.0 engine.

Nissan and Volkswagen and even Benz need to get off this 2.0T thing for vehicles that are too large for it. Hyundai/Genesis, Ford, GM, Toyota, all have 2.3T - 2.7T going and that extra bit of displacement seems to make all the difference when moving around a 5 ton barge like these three-row crossovers.  Yes, they still sound like ass, but at least they can move.

I agree that a 2.0 turbo in a GLE is nuts.  Yes it can get a sub 7 second 0-60 time but I am sure it revs like crazy to do it, and the inline 6 gets the same mileage.

I hit a deer last November which totaled my E550.  I did a 2 year lease on a sales demo C300 because I am waiting for EV's to get better then I am going EV and never going back, especially if the Bozo drives gas to $6 a gallon.  The 2 liter mile hybrid is totally fine for a C-class (or GLC) not fast or exciting but more than adequate to get around.  In a big SUV I think it would be a dog, and VW doesn't have electric assist.  Although not like a Taos is fast either.

And probably why EV's will take over easily when batteries get cheap.  Even weak EV's like the Bolt are much faster than a garden variety 4 cylinder crossover and 1000 times better NVH.

Yep, this is one of those things where the theoretical and mathematical equations just aren't equaling in the real world. On paper the 2.0T should be just fine and I'm sure the engineers have all ran specific tests and numbers saying this is the perfect configuration for their application(s) however, it just doesn't work out in the real world.

Sorry to hear about your car @smk4565. I know it was special for you. That really sucks.

They are fine on paper as long as you drive like a grandma, or not in NJ.

    • What I was really going to say: If you celebrate it, Happy Easter. If not, enjoy the weekend.
    • I was referring more to the demographics.  I was driving around the Stone Mountain suburb of Atlanta, which a few people have tried to push toward a comeback, given that it has a little bohemian village at its center, and it hasn't worked.  Some of the junior sized McMansions look nice, but there are metal doors over the front doors.  Some of them also look neglected and they're not that old.  It might have been redneck at some point, hence the gun toting, but this is clearly a majority African-American neighborhood at this point and has been for a while.

    • I agree that it does have far more space inside than a GLS, Escalade or any other full size SUV. Still feel that the Minivan scene would take off more if they were styled like an SUV and had AWD. I see now more of the Kia Minivan around the Seattle area than Chrysler, Toyota, or Honda and people I talk with love the style plus all the room inside. As @Drew Dowdell pointed out, I do hear that others wish the stow and go seats would be incorporated into other makes. I have to figure there is a patent issue or some legal issue as to why Honda, Toyota, Kia have not done it yet.
