William Maley Staff Writer - CheersandGears.com October 31, 2012 Bloomberg is reporting that earlier this month, Fiat CEO Sergio Marchionne sat down with PSA-Peugeot/Citroen GM earlier this month about creating an alliance that would become the largest automaker in the region. Marchionne's proposal was to have the three companies form an alliance in exchange for stock. Marchionne also had another proposal on the table where Fiat would take Opel off GM's hands if the company was given between $5 to $7 billion in cash for restructuring costs. PSA-Peugeot/Citroen passed on the alliance because it favors its partnership with GM. Also, if PSA-Peugeot/Citroen went ahead wi…

Laura Soave, the head of the Fiat in North America, is leaving the company. Soave oversaw the return of Fiat in North America with 500. However flagging sales, slow dealer network expansion and marketing disasters (see Jeniffer Lopez ads) have cause Soave to leave. Through October, Fiat has only sold 15,826 500s. A far cry from the 50,000 500s goal for 2011. The news is made even worse when Automotive News reports that 29 out of the 150 Fiat dealers didn't sell one 500 last month. Soave's replacement is Timothy Kuniskis. Kuniskis previous position was Director of Product Marketing for Chrysler and Fiat. Source: Automotive News (Subscription Required) Press Rele…

Introduced at the 1984 Turin Motor Show, the Thema was Lancia's flagship sedan, sharing the "Type Four" platform with the Fiat Croma, Alfa Romeo 164 and the Saab 9000. Shaped by the hands of Giorgetto Giugiaro, the boxy sedan model featured a 0.32 drag coefficient, which was an impressive figure at the…

Marchionne, who is chief executive officer of Fiat and Chrysler Group, says natural gas engines offer a better way to cut emissions because they're cheaper than competing technologies. He also argues electric cars, which General Motors and Toyota are betting on, present "too many obstacles" such as the recharge time for batteries. "Natural gas is very suitable for the U.S.," Constantinos Vafidis, who oversees transmission and h…

Beauty and a Beast: New Lancia Stratos runs 0-62 in 3.3 seconds by Noah Joseph (RSS feed) on Dec 7th 2010 at 1:59PM In a perfect world, the fastest cars would be the best looking ones. And to some extent, that's often the case. But not always. For instance the Alfa Romeo 8C Competizione is one of the most jaw-droppingly gorgeous automotive creations ever devised, but by most accounts, its performance fails to live up to its styling. Conversely, cars like the Nissan GT-R and Porsche 911 GT2 RS are some of the most devastatingly fast vehicles ever to grace tarmac, but not everyone's enamored of their sheetmetal. The New Stratos is here to suggest that you may be able t…

Fiat officially splits into two corporate groups by Noah Joseph (RSS feed) on Dec 1st 2010 at 8:01AM With all the mergers and acquisitions going on in the automotive industry these days, few corporate structures have been as tumultuous as that of Fiat. The first is to be known as Fiat SpA, and will encompass the automotive brands, including Alfa Romeo, Lancia, Maserati and, of course, Fiat. The second, Fiat Industrial SpA, will presumably inc…
