Reinstated by Italian court, Fiat workers turned away Three workers fired by Fiat and then reinstated by an Italian court showed up for work Monday after the carmaker had urged them to stay away from its factory in the southern town of Melfi. "We have a right to work," Giovanni Barozzino, one of the three workers, told SkyTG 24. The three showed up for their 1 p.m. shift and were not allowed back on the production line, newswire Ansa said. They left the factory after being told they would only be allowed to do union-related activities, Ansa said. The workers were dismissed July 14 after Turin-based Fiat accused them of sabotaging operations during a strike. A labor co…

New Lancia Stratos: High-Res Photo Gallery MONDAY, AUGUST 23, 2010 By now, you've probably heard or read about the modern-day interpretation of the Lancia Stratos that is being built as a one-off (for the time being) by Pininfarina for Michael Stoschek, a wealthy German businessman. While there is nothing new in the way of details, the people behind the project have finally released some high resolution photos of the reborn Stratos that you can enjoy right after the jump. We'll remind you that the Stratos is based on a shortened platform of a Ferrari F430 Scuderia making use of the same V8 powerhouse. link: http://carscoop.blogspot.com/2010/08/new-lancia-stratos-high…

New Lancia Stratos: Real Life Photos of One-Off Special Based on F430 and Built By Pininfarina FRIDAY, AUGUST 13, 2010 Turns out the modern-day interpretation of the iconic Lancia Stratos that took the internet by storm the past couple of weeks is in fact a real car and it will be produced. German media, including Auto Motor und Sport magazine, reported today that the Stratos is a one off -at least for now- commissioned by Michael Stoschek, owner and CEO of the German automotive supplier, Brose KG. It is not clear if the Lancia badge will be used on the final car since it's not an official product. These photos showing the Stratos from various angles as well as alongs…

The New Lancia Stratos Is Gorgeous, Possibly V8-Powered The new Lancia Stratos has given in to the frenzy it's caused and posed pretty for the camera. Not only that but we have details too, like how it's got a Ferrari V8, ceramic brakes and a cost-is-no-object development budget. So you fancy this new Lancia Stratos, huh? Well, this baby's got it all, the compact size, the clamshell openings, a tight, race-oriented cockpit and Ferrari power. A few things have changed though. Gone are the pop-up head lights, a victim of the times more than anything, and rather than a V6 mounted midship, instead there's a V8. Speculation as to which one is still a little wild, with Italia…

The Lancia Stratos Is Real, Headed For Production The Lancia Stratos we saw last week is real and it's not just intended for one wealthy industrialist's garage, it's headed for limited production. According to Car und Driver, the new Stratos is aiming to set everyone's pants on fire. Remember Jason Castriota? The guy behind the Stile Bertone Mantide? He's reportedly the brains behind this latest off-the-deep-end design exercise, but where the Mantide was polarization incarnate the new Stratos is just plain awesome. What we've been seeing kicking around isn't just some bonus for a Goldman Sachs golden boy, instead it's a production-intent sports car we'll endlessly lust …

PSA shares slump on H2 fears after strong first half July 28, 2010 08:16 CET PARIS (Reuters) -- PSA/Peugeot-Citroen warned its second-half performance would be hampered by a tougher economic environment, sending its shares lower even though it swung to a first-half profit. PSA shares opened 1.3 percent higher, after the group posted strong first-half results, but later fell sharply, trading 3.74 percent lower, underperforming a 0.49 percent drop in the Stoxx 600 European Autos index. Italy gives Fiat too little and asks too much July 27, 2010 - 11:45 pm ET Italy needs to make building cars in the country more financially appealing to Fiat – and other automakers – if it wants to avoid losing future projects. That means the government has to reconsider its no-intervention policy regarding the auto industry. Without incentives and tax breaks, Italy cannot compete with countries such as Serbia, which made Fiat a great offer to win production of the Fiat Multipla and Idea minivan replacements from the Mirafiori plant in the automaker's hometown Turin. Fiat will pay 350 million euros ($454 million) in cash upfront to cover a 1 billion euro investment. T…

Fiat to shift minivan production to Serbia from Italy Automotive News Europe -- July 22, 2010 06:01 CET Fiat S.p.A. will build two new minivans in Serbia instead of Italy, CEO Sergio Marchionne said. Fiat could also produce in other countries four other models originally planned for Italian production including Alfa Romeo and Chrysler group cars. Fiat said in December that it would build the replacements for the Idea and Multipla minivans in the company's Mirafiori plant in Turin, Italy. On Wednesday, Marchionne said Fiat has reversed this decision after the company failed to win sufficient concessions from workers to assure the “governability” of its Pomigliano d'Arc…

Fiat also said its board approved the plan to separate its industrial vehicle and auto businesses into two distinct companies in order to "give birth" to a global automotive company that will incorporate Chrysler LCC. The plan was announced in April. A second-quarter net profit of $115.6 million compares with a loss of $215.9 million in the same period last year. Net revenues were…

Peugeot to resurrect Talbot brand as channel for cheap cars? by Zach Bowman (RSS feed) on Jul 6th 2010 at 6:02PM It's certainly possible. According to La Voz de Galicia, the French automaker is currently mulling the creation of a new sub-brand to break into the lower rungs of the inexpensive car market. Rather than go through the hassle of rustling up a whole new name, the company has looked to the past for inspiration. It came up with Talbot – a company that got its start early in the 20th century and puttered to a stop in 1986. The name has a history of rising from the dead. In 1978, Peugeot pulled a similar stunt by bringing the Talbot name back from obscurity after…

Filed under: Hirings/Firings/Layoffs, Mitsubishi, Earnings/Financials, Peugeot, Citroën The French and the Japanese have gotten together to form a magic partnership once already with Carlos Ghosn at the helm. The question is, then, can that success be replicated? PSA Peugeot-Citroën seems to hope so, and it is reportedly on the verge of purchasing a controlling stake (somewhere between 30 and 53 percent, depending on the report) in Mitsubishi Motors. The total price for the acquisition would cost the European automaker over $3 billion and the deal would also include Mitsubishi acquiring a somewhat smaller stake in PSA Peugeot-Citroën - again, similar to the situation b…
