From the late 1980's to the early 1990's, this vehicle was sold to the public by a major automaker in the US. After a series of problems that could not be resolved, almost all the vehicles were bought back by the automaker and crushed.

Was the name of the vehicle, the automaker and the problem that lead to most of them being crushed?

Nissan Van, IIRC. Can't recall the problem, though.

Because it was ugly?

Mitsubishi had a similar, boxy style van in the US then also...about the only one of that group I remember was the Toyota van...I've seen a few of those over the last ten years, in So Cal and Hawaii.
