Honda News: Honda Issues Recall For 871,000 SUVs and Minivans Due To Rolling Away Fears

December 12, 2012

Honda has issued a recall for 871,000 vehicles due to an issue where a vehicle may roll away after the key has been removed form the ignition. 92% of the effected vehicles (about 807,000) are in the U.S. The Honda vehicles in question are,

  • 2003 - 2005 Acura MDX: 230,000 vehicles
  • 2003 - 2004 Honda Odyssey: 318,000 vehicles
  • 2003 - 2004 Honda Pilot: 259,000
  • Honda Vehicles Outside The U.S.: 64,000

Honda in a statement says the problem pertains to the ignition interlock which can become damaged or worn. This can allow the key to be removed from the ignition when the car is started or if the transmission has been shifted into any gear.

"If the transmission is not in park and the parking brake is not set, the vehicle could roll away and a crash could occur," Honda said in a statement.

NHTSA opened a investigation into the issue after receiving 43 complaints about Honda and Acura vehicles rolling away. Some of the complaints say their vehicles hit parked cars, fences, trees, mailboxes and in some cases, caused bodily harm.

Just had 3 recalls fixed on the CR-V... fairly big stuff too. Window switches that could melt, headlight switches that would fail spontaneously and you'd lose low-beams, and shrapnel in the airbag.

Supposedly, reliability, quality, and durability were the reasons for buying a soulless Honda.....so why do we still have this car?

Sounds like a New GMC Terrain or Equinox would be a better fit to replace that Soulless CRV or better yet, get the Encore for you and your partner to drive. That would be a fun little Number.

:D

I'm planning on an Encore unless the Terrain and 'Nox are downsized a bit. He wouldn't drive them the few times they've graced our driveway.

Sounds Exciting, I think the Encore is going to be a big seller for Buick and for those that need it in AWD form, it will rock just fine with the Turbo engine.

All the ones on Accord platform are being recalled. I wonder when the design was done, the company overlooked the chances of failure.

The amount of component sharing at Honda is well hidden. When our CR-V had to have the A/C system replaced, I found out that every model Honda of that year shares over 90% of the system. Honda was fighting having to do a recall and got taken to class action due to the self destructive nature of the A/C system (if one fragile component breaks it take the entire system with it). I wouldn't be surprised if we hear about another recall in a few months for other Accord platform models that haven't yet been recalled.

According to The Drive website, Mercedes-Benz is putting out a car for the quote "Pikachu Generation".

The AMG A35 hot hatch is a AWD 306 HP 295 lb-ft of torque pocket rocket with a 2L Turbo 4 engine. Power is delivered to the four wheels via a 7sp dual clutch automatic transmission. For those that think 0-60 times are the measure stick, Mercedes-Benz quotes a time of 4.7 seconds with a top end speed of 155 mph. The power train is an AWD system that is FWD Biased but can go to a pure 50:50 split AWD when needed. According to Mercedes-AMG CEO Tobais Moers, this is directed to compete with the Volkswagen Golf R, Honda Civic Type R and the Ford Focus RS. The CEO has also stated they have an A45 in the pipeline for next year producing more than 400 hp.

Sadly for those in the United States, Mercedes-Benz is not planning on exporting this to the US at this time.

General Motors is recalling 1,015,918 pickup trucks from the 2015 model year due to a problem with the electric power steering (EPS) system. In a letter published by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration yesterday, the EPS may momentarily lose assist before regaining it.
"If EPS assist is lost and then suddenly returns, the driver may have difficulty steering the vehicle, especially at low speeds, increasing the risk of a crash," wrote NHTSA.
      The models affected include,
Cadillac Escalade Chevrolet Silverado Chevrolet Suburban Chevrolet Tahoe GMC Sierra GMC Yukon The fix is simple as dealers will update the EPS software. No word on when GM will begin the recall.
GM issued a similar recall for about 700,000 Chevrolet and GMC trucks in the US last year.

Don't worry if you have forgotten that the Acura ILX still exists, as your author also forgot about it until this week when the Japanese automaker announced a refreshed version.
The 2019 ILX gets Acura's new front end design with a large pentagonal grille, aggressive bumper cutouts, and LED ‘Jewel Eye’ headlights. Around back is a restyled decklid, taillights, and a new rear diffuser. For the interior, Acura has installed an updated version of their two-screen infotainment layout that includes Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. A-Spec models come equipped with a set of sport seats.
One big change is all ILX models getting the AcuraWatch suite of active safety features as standard. This includes automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, lane keep assist, and and road departure mitigation.
One item that hasn't changed is the powertrain. A 2.4L four-cylinder producing 201 horsepower is teamed with an eight-speed dual-clutch transmission.
Acura hasn't revealed pricing, but we wouldn't be surprised if it remains at the same $28,100 as the current model. Sales will begin in October.
