Land Rover News: 2014 Range Rover Drops One V8, Introduces A V6

The 2013 Range Rover comes with two different V8 options; a 375 horsepower naturally aspirated 5.0L V8 and 510 horsepower supercharged 5.0L V8 engine. For 2014, Land Rover is changing out the naturally aspirated 5.0L V8 for a 3.0L supercharged V6.

The 3.0L supercharged V6 is good for 340 horsepower and 332 pound-feet of torque. All of that power go to the four wheels via an eight-speed automatic transmission. Land Rover says 3.0L improves fuel economy by as much as 15%.

The 2014 Range Rover arrives in the summer.

(MAHWAH, NJ) February 19, 2013 - On the heels of a massively successful launch of the 2013 all-new Range Rover, Land Rover is opening retail orders for the 2014 Range Rover, which will be in showrooms this summer.

The upcoming 2014 Range Rover will be available with a new and more

efficient 340hp supercharged V6 engine. This new engine choice combines effortless performance and exceptional refinement with enhanced fuel efficiency. The supercharged V6 engine will be offered alongside the 510hp supercharged V8. Both engines will be paired with an eight-speed ZF 8HP70 automatic transmission. The supercharged V6 will replace the naturally aspirated 5-liter V8 in the model line-up.

With the new supercharged V6, the 2014 Range Rover will reach 60 mph from rest in just 7.1 seconds*. The supercharged 3-liter 90 degree V6 engine was developed from the existing 5-liter V8. With a peak output of 340hp at 6,500rpm, it offers a strong torque curve throughout the engine speed range, producing maximum torque between 3,500 and 5,000rpm.

The new engine has been engineered to support the full breadth of capability expected from a Range Rover, including extreme off-road tilt angles up to 45 degrees, wading depth of nearly 36 inches (900mm) and towing weight up to 7,716 lbs (3,500kg). The engine's accessory drive is waterproofed, as are the alternator, air conditioning compressor, and starter motor. A pressure die-cast oil pan which features a deep profile and oil pick-up is designed to operate at tilt angles of up to 45 degrees fore/aft. The four-cam V6 shares features a lightweight die-cast aluminum block supplemented with cross-bolted main bearing caps for strength. The valves are controlled by a dual independent variable cam timing (DIVCT) system which is activated by the positive and negative torques generated by the movement of the intake and exhaust valves. This variable timing system features actuation rates of more than 150 degrees per second, to optimize power, torque and economy at all engine speeds. Counter-rotating front and rear balancer weights are engineered into this 90 degree V6 to maximize smoothness and refinement.

Land Rover's Intelligent Stop/Start system helps enhance fuel efficiency in stop and go driving by reducing engine idling under certain conditions which saves fuel and cuts emissions.

Spray-guided direct injection (SGDI) delivers precise quantities of fuel directly into the combustion chambers at pressures of up to 150bar (2175PSI). The fuel is injected in a matter of milliseconds several times during each combustion cycle, creating a more homogenous air-fuel mixture for cleaner and more efficient combustion. A high compression ratio of 10.5:1 further improves fuel efficiency and reduces emissions. The latest-generation Roots-type twin vortex supercharger is mounted in the 'V' of the engine and the charge air utilizes an air/liquid intercooler. A new Bosch engine management system controls all engine functions.

When coupled to a high-strength yet lightweight all-aluminum structure this new powertrain further builds on the efficiency gains of the new Range Rover.

I doubt it very much that real people will see the 15% gain. If you drive a supercharged or turbocharged engine with a light foot you can see these gains, but then you might as well have a normal asperation v6 as you are not using the power to get moving. Most people will live in the power zone and suck up fuel and the real world gas mileage will be far worse than the normal 5.0L v8 was.

Just as Jaguar dropped the 5.0 liter N/A V8 and Mercedes is dropping the E550 in favor of a bi-turbo V6 come 2015. Not sure how a bi-turbo V6 is a replacement for a bi-turbo V8, but that is what they are doing. The V8 is dying, I feel like by 2020 the V8 will only be found in high-end sports cars or Mercedes S-class or bigger sedans.

So much for an open market, let the market forces decide what people want. Seems the politicians are dictating what we can and cannot drive. Holding onto older auto's for what you want will become the norm for those of us that love auto's and love to drive. Sadly the roads are going to become more dangerous due to poor road conditions and distracted drivers who really do not care about driving. :(

      Autocar is reporting that Land Rover is developing a new line of vehicles that will be focused more on-road capability and use electric powertrains. The models will still feature some sort of some off-road capability.
      Called Road Rover, the first model is being developed in parallel with the next-generation Jaguar XJ. Both models are expected to share the same architecture which will be made out of aluminum and have the capability of either being fitted with internal-combustion engines and electric powertrains. The model could debut as early as 2019 at the LA Auto Show.
      Road Rover has some history for Land Rover. Back in 1950's, the name was used for an experimental model that bridged the gap between Rover and Land Rover.

      Jaguar Land Rover's Special Vehicle Operations has been building up a reputation with high-performance and ultra-luxury models. They're hoping to add capable vehicles to that list with the debut of the Land Rover Discovery SVX.
      SVX will be reserved for models that can go anywhere and this Discovery fits the bill. The chassis boasts a lifted air suspension with long-travel dampers and new knuckles; Hydraulic Active Roll Control that provides better wheel articulation, and a set of 20-inch forged-aluminum wheels wrapped in Goodyear Wrangler off-road tires. Land Rover's Terrain Response 2 system has been retuned for the SVX to provide maximum traction no matter the terrain.
      Power comes from a supercharged 5.0L V8 with 518 horsepower and 461 pound-feet of torque. Power flows through a specially calibrated eight-speed automatic with a two-speed transfer box.
      Outside, SVO has fitted new bumpers with skid plates, grille and side vents finished in black, orange tow hooks, and and an exclusive Tectonic Grey paint.
      Land Rover says the Discovery SVX will go into production next year at SVO's Technical Center.

      Discovery SVX has improved approach, departure and breakover angles, achieved by raising both the lightweight aluminium monocoque architecture and the four-corner air suspension system, employing long-travel dampers and revised knuckles, and fitting larger 815mm diameter 275/55 R20 Goodyear Wrangler all-terrain tyres on forged aluminium alloy wheels.
      Tyres with higher side-walls reduce contact pressure and improve performance on soft surfaces. Combined with a more aggressive tread pattern, this improves grip in muddy conditions.
      Discovery SVX is also equipped with active centre and electronic rear locking differentials which work with the specially tuned Terrain Response 2 system to optimise traction on all surfaces.
      Complementing these hardware upgrades are unique software calibrations for the eight-speed automatic transmission with twin-speed transfer box, and Discovery’s dynamics systems including Hill Descent Control, Electronic Traction Control (ETC), Adaptive Dynamics, Dynamic Stability Control (DSC), All-Terrain Progress Control (ATPC) and variable ratio electric power-assisted steering (EPAS). Discovery SVX also features a model-first Pistol Shifter in place of the Drive select rotary shifter to offer the driver optimum control of gear selection in off-road manoeuvres.
      To visually reflect Discovery SVX’s inherent robustness and go-further ability, Land Rover designers have referenced features of iconic Discovery off-road challenge vehicles, such as those used for Camel Trophy and G4 Challenge events, to give SVX a distinctive, aggressive and purposeful appearance inside and out.

      The production preview SVX at Frankfurt IAA features unique front and rear bumpers with protective skid plates and exposed Rush Orange-finished metal recovery eyes – each rated to enable recovery of more than six tonnes, an anti-glare bonnet finish and an integrated rear-mounted electric winch system.
      Discovery SVX also stands out through its exclusive satin Tectonic Grey paint finish, a unique colour and material combination of Lunar and Light Oyster with Rush Orange accents inside, and ‘X’ logo perforations on the SVX-branded seats. Unique Narvik Black side vents with V8 badging, a Narvik Black Dynamic grille, Black roof rails and a roof-mounted unit with two additional light pods for improved low-light visibility complete the transformation.

Year to date, Jaguar Land Rover is up 19 percent in the United States.

      “We are proud that Jaguar Land Rover continues its positive sales momentum and has finished the first half of the year with a 19 percent sales increase,” said Joe Eberhardt, President and CEO, Jaguar Land Rover North America, LLC. “Land Rover had its best June sales month ever and the new generation of Jaguar vehicles, led by the F-Pace and XE, continue to make their mark in a very competitive market place."
      U.S. BRAND HIGHLIGHTS
      Land Rover
      For the month of June, Land Rover sales hit 5,760 units, the best June sales month for the brand.
      The Range Rover had its second best June sales month with 1,382 sales, up 23 percent from 1,125 units sold in June 2016. The Range Rover Sport was the volume leader with 1,594 units sold.
      In its first full month of sales, the new Discovery achieved 845 units sold, and Discovery Sport hit 1,014 sales.
      Jaguar
      For the month of June, Jaguar sales were 2,946 units, a 7 percent increase from 2,743 units in June 2016; making it the best June Jaguar sales month since 2004.
      The Jaguar XE, had its best June sales month ever, and hit 638 units sold.  The Jaguar F-PACE hit 1,501 units sold, making it the brand’s volume leader for the month. The Jaguar F-PACE recently won two titles at the 2017 World Car Awards – World Car of the Year and World Car Design of the Year.
      The Jaguar F-TYPE hit 327 sales, up 7 percent from 306 units in June 2016. To mark the introduction of the new 18 MY F-TYPE range, at this year’s New York Auto Show Jaguar debuted an exclusive 400 SPORT special edition model.
