Mitsubishi News: Mitsubishi and Nissan Midsize Project Hits An Impasse

Recommended Posts

Back in late 2013, Mitsubishi announced a new partnership with Nissan to create a new midsize sedan for the North American marketplace. But at the NADA conference this weekend, a Mitsubishi executive says the plan has hit an impasse.

“I told them that the plan has stalled. And I said that’s really all I can tell you at this time,” said Don Swearingen, executive vice president of Mitsubishi Motors North America to Automotive News.

Its unclear whether the sedan part of the partnership or if another part is causing the trouble. Nissan was unable to comment at the time the story went up.

But while the midsize sedan fate is in question, Mitsubishi dealers have a lot of new products to look forward in the next couple of years.

  • Redesigned Outlander - July
  • Redesigned Outlander Sport and new Lancer - End of the year
  • New Mirage - Next Spring
  • Mirage Sedan and Outlander Plug-In Hybrid - Second Quarter of 2016

Be interesting to see what the Impasse is. Does this mean that Mitsubishi will need to find a new partner or merge to survive against the larger giant auto companies?

Wait.. a new Mirage? Already?

Mitsubishi should partner with Suzuki to sell the next Kazashi in the US.  The last Kazashi would have made a great Galant.

Yeah that is somewhat surprising.

that was my idea too at the time I was selling Suzukis for a living.  DO you think you could get two Japanese companies to collaborate though?

I've read stuff where they had interviews with Suzuki higher ups who said Kizashi was a disaster for them, when in fact the reality is opposite.  Kizashi actually got them on the radar of some really sophisticated buyers, and it was the first US suzuki that got people to consider them as less than a freak show and a real mainstream alternative.

I still remember the people / buyers i put on the spot, asking them to tell me 'you like the Legacy better than the Kizashi".  I would never get an answer to my face on that question.  But it came down to two things really on the Kizashi failure.

---sized like a tweener.  same physical size as a cruze and much roomier than that, but was advertised as a midsizer and it was a bit short on space in the rear for that.  our own detail guy who is tall shunned a Kizashi and got a Sonata only because of the interior room.  Likewise i lost sales to mazda6 and accord etc. for same reason.

---the status of US dealers and not marketing and packaging cars correctly and the impending doom of getting run of the US.  SX4 was a great niche product and they finally upsize it and have to leave the market before they sell it here.  It could have helped save death.  If you want to see the SX4 concept fully realized and what all my customers were begging for, look no further than the Trax / Encore.

Suzuki will never build another Kizashi because they are geared for small $h!boxes.  Mits would have been the perfect outlet to sell a larger suzuki in the US.

Japanese mfrs in general need to stop going it alone and merge up.

Nissan's goal in the U.S. for quite some time was increasing its market share. To do this, the company piled on the incentives and sold more vehicles to rental car fleets. While fine in the short-term, the long-term effects would hurt profitability and brand image. This isn't helped by sales declining 6.5 percent this year and a growing supply of vehicles on dealers - Kelly Blue Book reports an 88-day supply of Nissan vehicles.
Nissan is changing its plan for the U.S. Back at the 2018 NADA Show in April, Nissan's U.S. sales chief Dan Mohnke told dealers the company would focus on boosting profitability by reducing inventory. One way to do that is cutting back on production.
The Nikkei Asian Review reports Nissan is slashing production as much as 20% at their North American plants. The cuts are already taking place at Nissan's two plants in the U.S. (Canton and Smyrna, TN) and three in Mexico. No layoffs are expected, instead, workers will have an extra day or two off of work. The cuts are expected to end in the fall when production of the next-generation Altima kicks off. It is expected that the production cut will drop Nissan's U.S. sales for the year by three percent.

UK Sales started on Nissan Energy Solar System

Nissan has announced the start of their all encompassing Solar Energy System. This system has the ability to reduce home electric bills by 66%, increased independence from the national grid and electricity providers and the ability to generate, store and manage energy use overnight. Nissan says even on overcast or rainy days the system will still do all this and provide charging to your Nissan EVs.
Nissan says the basic home system starts at £3,881 and includes the supply and installation of six solar panel system, home energy management system and VAT at 5%. For those that do not speak UK Pound Sterling, this is equal to $5,242.45 at todays 5/17/2018 conversion rate for Dollars.

To get a complete solar panel system plus the XStorage unit that would be installed in your garage, your price starts at £7,635 or $10,313.46 at todays 5/17/2018 conversion rate for Dollars. Nissan is also selling additional storage units for £6,446 or $8,707.34 allowing one to go totally grid free if they so choose to add more panels and storage systems to fully support the house.

The Nissan Solar System allows one to use the Nissan wireless charging mat under their Nissan EV and if you need a bit of extra energy, you can always pull it from your auto battery and then return it later on. This maximizes the efficiency of electrical grid and solar solution.
Nissan UK Solar System web site
Nissan has stayed silent on if or when they plan to bring this to the US. Right now they are focused on the UK, a much smaller market. Yet once they feel this is perfected, it will be a solid competitor to the Tesla SolarCity panels and Powerwall 2 which has seen a large drop in installations since Tesla bought them out. With a 57% drop in installations and what shareholders see as a clear conflict of interest due to the bonds that the Tesla CEO and his family members held, it would see they had more to gain than the shareholders. A Delaware judge is letting the lawsuit move forward creating more headache for CEO Musk.

Clearly Nissan has taken ideas on their ideas of a smart street with fluid green energy being used between the auto and the home. For more pictures and info on this check out the story posted March 16 2016 here:
