October peak-a-BOO

Another beach day yesterday, saw a sharp dark red mid 60s Corvette Stingray convertible on the freeway, top down.   Saw a rumbly black late model Camaro ZL1 convertible.   Also a very clean white w/ no vinyl top '69-70 Grand Prix on the freeway.

Another day, another 6 covered bridges on the tour.  Saw 5 yesterday.  This sharp Porsche 996 Turbo cab was on the tour, and one road between two bridges was a gravel/dirt road with many mud filled potholes.   The couple in the Porsche were going slowly down that road, I was behind them.  I love the craftsmanship of these bridges, esp the 19th century ones.  Finished off the weekend with a couple beach stops.  I love fall in NE Ohio.

Driving to Home Depot and working at my daughters new condo, I saw the following on the road today. A early generation Defender, red in pretty decent shape for such an old SUV. Also was surprised to see a Indy Corvette Pace car from a few decades ago, 70's era I believe. There was another old auto I saw and now for the life of me I cannot remember. Probably will pop up in my brain as I sleep.

Didn't get that far south....was in Geneva, Jefferson, Ashtabula, Conneaut...along I-90 and maybe 20 miles south of I-90 and north of I-90 to the coast...

What is this tour? Sounds like something I'd like to do either on the bike or in the Toronado.

Just an informal drive around Ashtabula County to see the bridges...can be done anytime of year (they have an annual festival where merchants set up at the fair grounds and at some of the bridges).   I probably should have waited until next week or so when the fall colors were fully out...but the weather was so nice last weekend, went then.  I've seen 12 of the 19 bridges, plan to go back this weekend and see a few more.   It's only an hour and a 1/2 for me up to the area.    The Ohio wine country is in that area also, a bunch of wineries along I-90.

I like the Erie, PA area also..which is just a few more miles up the road...I love Presque Isle State Park, went there Labor Day weekend. I think I may go up there and into nearby Western NY (up to Dunkirk maybe) and see fall colors and lighthouses soon...

Another Sunday drive.  Out in Ashtabula County again, saw two more covered bridges…cooler, wetter weather but scenic.  Not much fall color.  Crossed the Pymatuning Reservoir into Pennsylvania and went to Conneaut Lake.  Nice roads, great scenery.  Saw a CJRD dealer in the middle of nowhere with probably a dozen new Jeep GC Ls on the lot.  Saw a red and white ‘64 Dodge Custom 880 2dr on a small town used car lot.

Saw a new WL JGC L for the first time up close, front looks good.  Hood and sides seem too flat ( I like the creases of my WK2).  Not sold on the rear either.  This one was a Summit.   Also saw a sharp black ‘65 Mustang 2+2, and a Pro Street style ‘73 Buick Gran Sport.  Dark blue w/ huge rear tires, giant bubble hood scoop, STGE 1 license plate. Great rumble.

I had to crop the owner (seen fueling) out of the photo.  I was thinking '56.  It was a '55.  I was thinking 283 V8.  He had put it a 350 V8.  I was thinking "three on the tree" or rudimentary 2 speed automatic transmission. He had put in a four on the floor.

Spotted October 10

I was driving down the road and I saw this car parked on a lawn in a smaller town.

KIMG2840.thumb.JPG.1b010bfc8397d1042d09909d70e9463b.JPG

With rectangular lamps, simple cubes in the grille, and it not being downsized, this is either a '75 or '76.  The glass sunroof seems to be holding up fine.  Just not sure I'd want to feed 500 cubic inches on the regular!

KIMG2841.thumb.JPG.11ad98fce1eda0099b199c46eb2a4fe7.JPG

I think the canted lower part of the opera window looks great.  So do the Cadillac inscription on the rearview mirror and the tufted leather seating.  An era gone by.

KIMG2843.thumb.JPG.417484aed7b461c9021090ade10b92b4.JPG

I think this sort of car gave Pontiac a run for their money with regard to "wide track!"  This sure is a wide vehicle and in fairly good shape for its age.

KIMG2844.thumb.JPG.d4bb399562dec9c1b0fa55f618e8ae3b.JPG

When fins were fins.  Just right.  Not crazy fins from the late '50s and early '60s.  And not tame fins that were on Cadillacs in the '90s and beyond.

KIMG2845.thumb.JPG.29c6f8a56e95538386c22a729b37fa44.JPG

Aside from the strip gauge, I love the way Cadillac organized their dashboards.  The A/C vents ran across the upper part of the dash, and there was another ledge just beneath the cowl with small gauges, warning lights, and the Cadillac emblem.  It probably helped inspire the more pronounced "ravine" dash that came along in the '90s and which I really enjoyed looking into for over 10 years.

Linear cowls and "ravines" on GM dashboards.  Good times.

'59 Edsel and a Lotus Elise.  The Elise was sold in the US from '05-11..was the basis for the original Tesla Roadster.   Neat little two seat mid-engined sports car...had a co-worker w/ a bright blue one in AZ, rode in it once--so tiny---scary in Scottsdale traffic w/ the all SUVs and lifted trucks on the streets....

Saw these a few days ago ...

A last-gen Pontiac Grand Prix in a color seen only in its first year as such, and maybe its second year:  Fusion Orange Metallic.  It would have been unlikely that other W-body GM cars such as the LaCrosse and the Impala would have offered it.  The Monte Carlo coupe could have been a candidate for it, but didn't offer it.  That's why these GPs stand out many years later.

KIMG2887-inked.thumb.jpg.a106147c910157d7127709a9c144d010.jpg

This looks great for a 16 to 17 year old car!

KIMG2885-inked.thumb.jpg.1165d079b844ef850e305f84bcd80b16.jpg

A ridiculously overstyled front end that, in my opinion, detracted from its maximum sales potential, in addition to the more confining astronaut-like (well, sort of) accommodations inside.

KIMG2894.thumb.JPG.72681e62d9681908085ba3e5e45027fc.JPG

And, then, while the return of the "Costco lunch" might make your day, their featuring this outside might sort of ruin it.

Seen late this afternoon

I was photographing some houses decked out in a big way for Halloween, and saw a few interesting cars in the process.  They're GM products, so, if that ain't your thing, you don't have to read on.

KIMG2944-inked.thumb.jpg.d65fca88c4614ba49b8b8d6e65771d2b.jpg

This is the smaller sibling of "la cathedrale roulante" (FR) ... a 1983 or 1984 (based on the color, since my family bought a Cutlass Supreme that year) Olds Eighty-Eight (Royale) (Brougham) being driven by what seemed like a high school kid.  He and/or his parents know what's good for you.

KIMG2969-copy.thumb.jpg.99f4bd7c00a6a38f1d8a2ff495309ea5.jpg

While looking at one great Halloween display at a one house, this beauty on an adjacent property caught my eye ... a 2008-ish Pontiac G8 in a metallic charcoal color.  In my book, this looks even nicer than a BMW 3 series sedan ... both then and now.

Rainy cool fall day with a bit of sun…while out chasing waterfalls, I saw a sharp bright blue current-style Mustang GT500 and a couple miles later, a C8 in a very similar color.   Brandywine Falls in Cuyahoga Valley National Park.

I think I was in about 8th grade, I remember a friend's mother drove an '83 Cutlass Supreme 2dr in that color...dark burgundy interior IIRC...I think I rode in it a couple of times..

Beautiful day, don’t let it get away.  Breezy fall day, in the 50s and sunny. Saw a sharp C8 in bright yellow (not my ideal color) and a clean silver Caddy XLR…always like those.  Took a walk on Huntington Beach (Bay Village, Oh).

Very well could have been even though they did offer a dark brown interior to go with that lighter exterior color, as well as the dark metallic brown they offered those few years.  I tend to dislike dark brown cars.  However, I've seen a few '83 and '84 Supreme Brougham coupes in that color, together with a landau roof and interior in that same color, and they were beautiful.  They dialed in that color.

Exterior in metallic dark brown, per brochure

I would have never thought this could have looked this good.

2016-01-31-1984-Cutlass-Supreme-1-2302-6

I think this - brown vinyl top and interior - looked better than it potentially did with burgundy.

2e80056dc44b1cf18c8e959d290ea970.jpg

Too much.  Per the rear window, the interior upholstery is very faded and has seen better days.

MAGA?

Bring back Cutlass Supreme RWD coupes and their stablemates.  And, while I'm at it, disco, too.

Wrapping up October after the fact ... a lot of random sightings on October 29th ...

KIMG3060.thumb.JPG.5e271dee0569252fd385f19c57f1c3f9.JPG

If it gets any greener, it will grow ...

KIMG3102.thumb.JPG.1e8b54bc2bc8b68e761909ec9543204c.JPG

Very well maintained early 90s Lumina being driven through a business park by a conservative looking gentleman.  I would love to see one - a coupe or a sedan - with the last of the 2.2s because it would be so rare.  That engine fared decently compared to the Iron Duke it replaced and which could have presented problems.  The norm for this car was obviously the 3.1 V6.

Did I miss my calling?  I love automotive brochures.  I was walking down the street in a fancy neighborhood with professional offices in these brownstones and thought these would make for good photos.

KIMG3212.thumb.JPG.176436b0d84427683bda497ead5f4651.JPG

And, for expensive German iron fans, this pulled up alongside me as I was walking on the sidewalk in the late afternoon.  Not bad, but nothing I'd own, even if I had the money to spare.
