I can't get over the front headlights of the Rivian. Looks so goofy3 points

Totally doable considering the millions of $50,000 to $100,000 trucks GM, Ford and Ram sell. 200,000 sold a year should be easy.3 points

I'm actively shopping right now for a 1500. And I'm certainly mentally willing to work for many more years, but my body is starting to argue with that. Tow ratings around 9000 seem fine (I think my 2500HD is around 11.2K). I'm terrifically smitten by the 3.0L TD at GM, what a great powertrain via the specs. I don't like delivery. I prefer to handle it all myself. If I have to go to the store to pick the materials anyway, I might as well haul it right there. One job I got 16' Trex decking, I borrowed a trailer and hauled it myself. I'm not sure the box stores have the capacity to deliver those lengths anyway. Another job I had to move 20-foot fencing pipes, I used my truck w/ a rig I built to go into the hitch receiver. My truck is holding up the 'truck cards' of 1000 short bed Denali's. The only job I had materials delivered was for an entire house construction. :p My #1 issue is finding a crew cab / 6.5-ft bed. They're hella scarce among the Big 4 as it is, but most of the proposed EV trucks don't offer that, and I don't expect they will; those will have to come from GM / Ford / Ram.3 points

200K plus trucks per year? At those prices??? They’ll be enormously fortunate to sell 15K in ‘21.2 points

This is awesome, always like it when they point out their own errors or false stuff that gearheads know would not be possible, but it does play for a good laugh.2 points

I was specifically only addressing your situation. I'm aware that people in apartments or without off street parking are different. As to your charger, you'd probably hardwire an outdoor safe model and hang it on the outside of the garage like a garden hose. The shortest hardwire units are generally 25" long. The eGolf people (and Leaf and Focus EV) are special use cases that only work if they have charger access at their house. The ranges for those models are simply too short to be useful except as a 3rd car in the household and it being dedicated to a specific route and charging pattern. However, as more models like the high range Teslas, Fiskers, Hummers, Bolts, F-150s, and Rivians come out, the use case looks remarkably similar to an ICE vehicle. Plug it in at night and go about your normal daily routine. Heck, I've got 50% of the action down right now without having an EV in the household. Ever since it got cold here, the Toronado gets put on the battery tender every time it gets parked.2 points

Most people are not aware that Braking in your auto could change starting January 1st 2021 when a no copper law goes into effect for California and Washington state in regards to brake pads. As such a R&D storm has been going on to find a suitable replacement. Copper is toxic to both humans and animals and as such, the west coast had back in 2014 passed laws giving till 2021 to replace it to meet clean water quality standards. This was led by San Francisco that was failing their water quality tests due to the high copper concentrations from brake pad dust. I had forgotten about this till I came across this updated story here: How the New Copper Ban Is Affecting High-Performance Car Brakes (thedrive.com) Yes they focus on high performance auto's as Europe also pushes to ban copper in break pads, but it will be interesting to see how this plays out. Seems JLR is defending what it sees as a theft of intellectual property by the VW company. To quote the story: The vehicles in question include the Porsche Cayenne; Lamborghini Urus; Audi Q8, Q7, Q5, A6 Allroad and E-Tron; and VW’s Tiguan. Seems that VW tried to get this dismissed, but the US court system found sufficient evidence to allow the trial to move forward to the court room. JLR says that VW can remove the illegal AWD traction control option systems from their auto's to continue to sell them in the US. Who knew that the ability to select Snow, Mud, Rain, Sand, etc. modes in an SUV was patented to just one company. Jaguar Land Rover Sues to Ban VW Group's SUV Imports to America (thedrive.com)1 point

Seems the first 6 months of production for Rivian which will cover the Launch Edition of the R1T truck has sold out with their reservation holders. This is from June 1st 2021 to Dec 31st 2021. I wonder how many this will be? Rivian has said they will ramp up to 100,000 models of each R1T and R1S per year and higher if needed. Be interesting to see how many they deliver by the end of the 2021 calendar year. I suspect the R1S will be even more successful.1 point

@balthazar Why are you looking at chargers around your house? Those are the chargers you would never use. Unless you're eligible for Tesla Supercharging for free or some other free service, charging at public paid charging stations never makes financial sense. What you want to look for is chargers between you and long-distance destinations that you visit. Can you make it to your son's college and back on a single charge? If not, look up chargers either in-between or at his school. Those are the chargers you would use. You're not driving 300 miles a day every day unless you're doing work in Harrisburg. Think about the longest trips you've taken in the past three years and look at the chargers for those routes. Anything under about 100 miles one way and you don't need to even think about it because for those you'd charge at home. The point that I believe @David is trying to make is that you "fill up" every day at home. You'll never use any of the public chargers around you... or even within 100 miles of your place. You'd never charge at a customer's home not because of any cost... even at 20c/kWh you're looking at $2.50 max worth of electricity on a 110v outlet. You wouldn't do it because on a 110v outlet the charge rate is too slow to even bother. If a customer had a level 2 charger at their house and let you use it, you could knock $5 off their bill and you'd be more than even. I suspect that the people you see hogging all of the Tesla chargers at the mall are just cheapskates that don't want their electric bill going up $30 a month. They paid all that money for a Tesla with free charging and they feel entitled to use as much free charging as possible and abuse the system even though from an opportunity cost/hour it makes little sense to the likes of you and I who can math. You could put a dryer outlet in your garage, get a level 2 charger for home and NEVER need to visit a public charger except for the maybe 2 times a year you go to your son's university. (I realize that Covid changes a lot of this scenario, but I'm talking about when life goes back to normal)1 point

When a group of car folk are together, and the talk turns to perfect body proportions, this is what starts forming in my mind while I'm waiting my turn; short frontal overhang / hood, long rear deck /overhang. [Altered wheelbase race car has both axle centers moved forward, then I digitally slid the greenhouse forward about a scale foot].1 point

Your toilet & fridge are in the same room?? I like the 'clic-lock' LVP tiles. Just did a bathroom floor after a subfloor repair, and it came out really nice. Peel & stick is very hit or miss due to commonly weak glue, plus they will move overtime, gapping.1 point

What had happened was, I was planning on ripping up my old bathroom floor (sheet goods, glued fast, big job, had to scrape, had a helper) and planning what to do next in there, but then the floor was UNDER the toilet, which needed to be replaced anyway, so now I am down to a fine finished plywood underlayment that is partially delaminated (due to a water disaster with a fridge icemaker line 16 years ago). And one toilet in the house. Was thinking of peel-and-stick tile, but I would have to replace the underlayment. Then I was thinking of thick sheet goods, which might be OK, but it has to be glued fast. So now I am on to waterproof LVP, which will easily go over the floor in its current condition, but requires careful cutting. Got to head over to the YouTube for tips and tricks.1 point

Bummed a bit as my water heater decided to take a dump ( of water). Was lucky enough to get someone to put a new on in Tuesday, so no warm water for a few days. Worried that the basement would be real bad, but it looks like I’ll just lose one panel of drywall to mold, as so far everything else is drying out nicely as we got the water up fast....still going to be quite some money though... Having a very small get together with my family, parents, and brother. To be safe, have air cleaners running, and masks can be worn if they want. I am around these folks regularly, so there is low risk. But with all the crazy, plan to be as careful as possible since I fall into that high risk category. Avoiding shopping this weekend anyways, as I work most of it anyways.......1 point

I've seen pics of this car around...the side window treatment looks very awkward..looks like they used an A-body wagon roof and rear hatch. This '72 deVille based wagon that used B-body wagon parts look better, IMO. This one was owned by Elvis. This '74 would look good w/ Escalade badges.. This Fleetwood wagon appears to have used an A-body rear roof, which looks too small and out of place, IMO..1 point

Some things in life are best left alone. I was not aware that in 1975 there were GM certified custom coach builders and as such with full warranty this 1975 Cadillac Eldorado went from the factory to the coach builder and was converted into a station wagon before going to the Cadillac Dealer and sold with full GM warranty. This is one of 2 certified Eldorado station wagons built and blessed by GM. More pictures of the interior on the link below. https://www.thedrive.com/news/37758/this-very-rare-custom-1975-cadillac-eldorado-station-wagon-could-be-yours-for-just-300001 point

Take a time machine and you can get this awesome little 1980 truck in your color. They even sold it in Diesel. In Highschool and College, I had my dads 1976 Luv Truck in White like this one. Awesome little trucks, solid and just went. So much better than the S10 Chevrolet replaced it with initially.1 point

As stated before [and re-verified here] - the Bolt sells VERY well for a BEV; #4 in the U.S. in 2019 at 16,418 units. Model 3 is an anomaly at 159K units, #2 prius prime was 23,630, #3 model x was 19,225. #5; Model S- 14,100. I don't think that's bad at all. But if we don't highlight the propulsion, and look at the Bolt vs. same-class vehicle types, then no; 16K units isn't great. Would a kia soul be in that class (31,621 U.S. sales)?1 point

I have seen the exempt plates that government vehicles get on what is clearly personal auto's and wondered the same thing. That is odd and how do they get their personal auto with an exempt plate or commercial plate. Very bizarre.1 point

Must be market differences as my GMC dealership by me has the 1500 Sierra all around 70K. Yes Denalis, trying to find anything below a Denali package seems to not exist here where I live, did find a couple lower end models in the high 50K's north in the rural areas. I still think Rivian pricing is competitive for what you get and the tech. Lower cost units will come after the launch edition along with higher priced models. I like it, you have the vertical headlights and then the day time running strip across the front. Very visible and safe I would say.0 points
