  1. This sounds like the beginning of a heist movie. Hahaha

  2. ^ Another Andrea Doria detail--the 1956 Chrysler Norseman concept car (built by Italy's Ghia) was in the hold of the ship. Was heading from Italy to the US to appear at car shows. Apparently was a fully running show car, that cost approx $150k to build in 1956.. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chrysler_Norseman

  3. That would have been a serious amount of money for a car during the Eisenhower years. I'll never forget when they introduced the Maybach by bringing the luxury car to America aboard the QE2 but, instead of putting it in the hold, they put it in a metal framed glass box that sat on one of the pool decks up near the funnel. There's a longer video showing the QE2 sailing into NY and a helicopter lifting it off the ship with a banner saying Maybach.

  4. On this day in 1956, Italian Line's post WW2 transatlantic flagship, the SS Andrea Doria, was off the coast of Nantucket and due in nearby New York the following morning. At about 11 pm, while people were dancing in the ballrooms and awaiting the midnight buffet, she was impaled by the outbound SS Stockholm, which was about to begin crossing the North Atlantic in an easterly direction. It has been called the greatest rescue at sea. The list of the Doria rendered half of her lifeboats unusable, so the nearby French liner Ile de France, as well as the "offending" Stockholm and smaller ships belonging to the U.S. armed forces, took on the survivors. The loss of life amounted to 46 on the Doria and 5 on the Stockholm and involved passengers and crew near the zone of the impact. While there were injuries, everyone else on board the two vessels survived. I wake up on July 25 and remember that the Andrea Doria collision and sinking happened on this day. You guys knew I'd post this.

  5. These batteries can be recycled at any recycle place just like traditional Lead Acid batteries. In regard to response of electronics, if you want to test your current battery, just go out, turn on the key, DO NOT start the motor, play the radio and other electronics in your auto. See how long the battery lasts. In much older tech autos, you could just sit in the auto, play the radio for a very long time. Today's autos actually can drain the battery in as little as 10 minutes. Escalade and Navigator both do not recommend playing the in-auto stereo system longer than 10 minutes without the engine running. Due to the ongoing use of battery electricity, there are things always sucking down power and this is where you can see a quality deep cycle Lead acid battery over a traditional one from the OEM or Walmart makes a big difference. From what I could find online, it seems the average in today's tech autos is 30 to 45 minutes of battery before dying and to prevent this, many autos will no longer let the radio even in accessory mode play longer than 10 to 15 minutes. Not sure what year MKC you have Lincoln Vehicle Owner Manuals Sitemap But it seems that depending on the stereo system and if you have optional subwoofer or any other electronics, they recommend either running the auto engine or using an individual device to listen to music if you are not going to run the auto. This would tell me that the electronics can put a drain on the system that would limit the ability for the auto to start, no difference than cadillac or any other luxury auto line. If you have Push Button start, then you have no accessory mode.

  7. A lead-acid battery is far from $300 for my MKC. I can get a Motorcraft battery for under $200 w/ a three year warranty or an EverStart from Walmart with a four-year warranty for $180. There is no benefit to 99.9% of owners of a $300 battery over a $180 battery. I'll give racers a break as they're in it for the weight savings.

  8. $600-1000 for a lithium car battery? That's certainly a hard pass.

  9. Chrysler Corp had quite a few concept cars built by Ghia and other Italian houses in the early-mid 50s. Seen a few at auctions and concours shows.

  10. Lovely looking auto. Anyone hear from @balthazar he has been very quiet for the last month or so. Was curious, Adjusted for inflation, $150,000 in 1956 is equal to $1,560,459 in 2022. Annual inflation over this period was 3.61%. Value of a dollar.

  11. This was in a class by itself! Bombastic, excessive, call it what you want ... but what a neat and unique Cadillac.

  12. ^ My sister was a frequent flyer for business for 20+ years, and after the 'Miracle on the Hudson' she recognized Captain Sullenberger, had flown on several of his flights previously...she's done with business travel, and soon likely done w/ corporate life after 40+ years in the game, with the last 20 mostly in management consulting.

  13. And, for the last time, has not one thing to do with what I said versus your original statement about Cadillac needing to sell in a certain volume despite the fact that NO luxury maker sells in that volume. I am not sure what you're not getting here but it has squat to with what Bara says about GM. In this context, Cadillac does not = GM.

  14. The Corvette will. Porsche and Ferrari too. ALL EQ sales and they barely beat the Taycan... 20 000 orders to be filled and delivered shortly. And when that happens in the near future, EQ EVs will lose that much more market share... Wanna fake it, buy a Mercedes!!!

  15. Not the reason that they filed for bankruptcy. But if 2-3 years is pre-history. 15 years ago is a land before time. GM aint hurting for cash. Cadillac is not hurting for profit. Mercedes' revenue is but a shell game. Its going to be tough time for Mercedes now that Mercedes doesnt have access to Chrysler/Jeep platforms to revive their coffers with Jeep platform SUV money that carried them through the ICE AGE SUV craze. The EV thing is going to slaughter their coffers as they have nobody to sponge off of. GM is quite in a good position here... The next decade will be futile for them. They dont even have a halo car for the EV future. The AMG ONE is a hybrid. So is a Corvette. And nothing yet on its specs. The Corvette hybrid and Z06 will mop the floor with it all for MILLIONS OF DOLLARS less. Sooooo much needed R&D money wasted on that shyte. The last great hybrid EV from Mercedes was 15 years ago with the SLS. Now...that would be about the time GM went bankrupt. since then, GM has brought out image enhancing hit after hit. Styling greatness, one after the other. Mercedes has relied on diesel scandals, melted bar of soap designs and laughable EV tech and going DOWNMARKET. Hoping for them that they have truly unlocked the batter tech they so desperately need and its not a lie like with their diesels...

  16. It looks like Arby's is taking a hiatus from regularly sending out coupons (chicken wraps, French dip sandwiches, etc.) and I am sort of pissed.

  17. TBH, I prefer the exterior of the Lyriq over the Celestiq. If the interior of the Celestiq concept is largely carried into production, Cadillac should have a winner on its hands, EV or not.

  18. It can't pass our emissions here and it probably doesn't make financial sense to build it, but they did it. A Formula 1 engine in a road car is probably the best piece of engineering ever for a road car. If anything it shows how Mercedes doesn't just do what the bean counters say makes sense, I applaud them for building it. And am waiting for someone to make a car faster around a track than it. Your favorite brand won't build a faster car.

  19. Revenue, ATP has zero to do with Revenue. Mercedes had $136 billion in revenue in 2021, GM $127 million and Honda $124 Billion. My earlier point at Lucid not being a threat is because Mercedes is a huge company, Lucid is not. Lucid lost $4.7 billion last year, and has $5.4 billion cash on hand, they only have enough cash to get through 2023. You keep saying Mercedes is going down market, then post a graphic that their avg sales price is up 25% in a year, and then you complain that them killing their entry level mode in the US is a failure. So you don't want them to sell an A-class, but complain when they cancel it? Also keep in mind the CLA will become the entry level Mercedes and is priced higher than the CT4, CT5 and XT4. Cadillac has a high ATP as a brand because their lower end cars had terrible sales volume and the Escalade does high volume. I have also said for over 10 years Cadillac needs to go up market. But it was Cadillac who priced the CT6 $30k under rivals, Cadillac who killed the CTS and replaced it with a CT5 that was $10k cheaper, Cadillac killed off the rear drive SRX for a cheaper front drive SRX at a lower price point. Cadillac killed the XLR after 1 generation instead of doubling down and making better car to justify the price tag. Even when the last CTS was around, it was like $8k cheaper than a 5-series or E-class. I have also said for years that they should go above the Escalade and most Cadillac fans are like "you can't do that, the Escalade is the top of the brand." Not only should Cadillac be doing the Celestiq, they should do an SUV above Escalade and a sports car above the Corvette. I just don't like the body style they went with for the Celestiq.

  20. Both exist though. If I were buying a car now, I'd prefer and EV since I think that's the future and I'll for sticking a middle at foreign oil. But I'd buy an E-class or S-class over an EQE or EQS because the EQE and EQS don't look good, and the E-class and S-class do look good. Also aren't enough EV's out there yet, not many body styles to pick from, most brands have 1 or none to pick from. So that Celestiq still has to compete with the Rolls and Bentleys that are out there now, they aren't only competing against Lucid or the EQS, and really they don't compete against Lucid, the Lucid Air is .4 inches longer than the last Cadillac CTS. The Celestiq I assume is way larger than a Lucid or Model S.
