This says a lot about the state of our country

Neither; I disavow 2010. I, too, love Hawaii, wonder if I'll ever get back there. Hellish plane ride. -
165-foot flagpole erected at Camelback Toyota dealership
balthazar replied to Robert Hall's topic in Toyota
I fail to see the amusement factor. What: that japanese toyota erected a flagpole to fly Old Glory ?? You were perhaps expecting the rising sun flag ? BTW- if toyoyo commissioned the flagpole, it'll soon be recalled for potential fire hazards and dropping it's flag onto the ground due to rotted hardware. -
Students Kicked Off Campus for Wearing American Flag Tees

^^ San Fran Bay area = nuff said. -- -- -- -- -- >>"In the first place, we should insist that if the immigrant who comes here in good faith becomes an American and assimilates himself to us, he shall be treated on an exact equality with everyone else, for it is an outrage to discriminate against any such man because of creed or birthplace or origin. But this is predicated upon the man's becoming in very fact an American, and nothing but an American. There can be no divided allegiance here. Any man who says he is an American but something else also, isn't an American at all. We have room for but one flag, the American flag, we have room for but one language here, and that is the English language, and we have room for but one sole loyalty and that is a loyalty to the American people."<< -
This says a lot about the state of our country
balthazar replied to Intrepidation's topic in The Lounge
I seem to remember something about a requirement or a shifting of making US flags in the US recently. I see no reason why the Fed cannot license reproductions to only be made stateside. I hang a 48-star flag off my front porch (who woulda guessed ??) -
>>"The measure, which has sparked angry protests nationwide"<< It has also sparked strong support nationwide. >>""...border-related violence and crime due to illegal immigration." But law enforcement officials in border communities say this simply is not true."<< Which side of the border communities? North?? Shall we all sit on our hands & wait until it's a problem north of the border ?? Do the statistics show violence in Mexico is abating steadily, or instead, is it escalating exponetially? Does it show that drug cartels are now emulating radical Islamists and adopting signature be-headings to rivals ?? Are we counting on these hideously violent gangs to restrain executing this violence here... just because ? Or are we going to be proactive for once ?? >>"the weakness of the U.S. economy also could be a factor."<< Ya think ?? >>"Violent crime is down statewide"<< Not in Phoenix (unless kidnapping is not categorized as 'violent'). >>"the border has to be permeable enough to permit a massive legitimate daily flow of goods and people."<< The Federal / AZ law does not limit legitimate traffic. Those strongly against the federal policy continue to muddy those two distinct entities intentionally. This is not an AZ issue- this is a Federal issue. Both WRT enforcement & policy. SR1070 is merely upholding federal law.

I read quite a bit on the Tulsa '57 in the year after they unearthed it- from all those in-person accounts, the car is mostly "paper thin" and the efforts last I heard were to stabilize it, not restore it. Restoration would require so much replacement it wouldn't be the same car.

One cannot conjure a more perfect example of 'irony' than >>'illegal immigrants are less likely to commit crimes than native Americans.'<< when their very entrance into the U.S. is a crime. And is not earning wages and ducking paying taxes ALSO a crime ? It is for U.S. citizens (over a certain $ amount). >>"...police would have to stop and question anyone they suspect of being in this country without legal authorization."<< In other words; criminals. >>"The Major Cities Chiefs Association, representing 56 police departments, says it hinders law enforcement by deterring members of immigrant communities from cooperating with cops."<< Sooo... while the legal Latino community is seemingly unilaterally against preventing criminal entry, at the same time that same segment is turning in criminal entrants ??? >>"...the Maricopa County sheriff's office, which runs the jail for Phoenix and surrounding cities, said 20% of its inmates are illegal immigrants. 15% of state prisoners are illegal immigrants."<< The wonderful world of 'Proof' as depicted by statistics & percentages. >>""Those are what we're targeting with this bill," Livingston, executive director of the Arizona Police Assn. said. "We're targeting the smugglers who prey on the good element of the Mexican population."<< We should ALL be against that, right? quotes from : http://www.latimes.com/news/nationworld/nation/la-na-arizona-crime-20100503,0,5543081.story

This has been an albatross of sorts for me professionally. I started it back in late July last year, but with all the rain last summer, a few months off for winter, minor surgery, and other jobs tossed into the mix, I did not finish construction on this until yesterday. It was fraught with unknowns. Tho the plans were done up by an architect, he never shot a single elevation, and ultimately 25 yards of dirt had to be removed. Tho he spec'd the upright posts as cedar- he never spec'd the horizontal wall slats as anything. They turned out to be cedar, too, and the material costs ballooned. All the thinner horizontals had to be ripped- you cannot get 3" wide cedar planks. The shorter walls' posts were 3x3"s- there too; they were sawn down from 4x4s. A materials list would've been nice. Plan called for an insane 19 Sonotubes to be sunk, and with the rain and the sheer number/proximity of the tubes, I had to hire a concrete pumper truck to deliver the 'rete- that alone was $950. Let's not forget moving the pool fence (posts set & re-set in concrete), saw-cutting the concrete pool deck, planting 3 trees, renting the mini-excavator... My brother (an excavator) was hired for 4 days, and I had another 4 days from 2 other guys when decking it- otherwise I built the whole thing by myself. Still need to bring in some dirt & decorative stone, and tweak one gate's set-up. And sand the existing deck again. But I am immensely relieved this one is 'in the book'. Specs: 732 square feet, 2 levels, 60-ft of walls, 2 gates, what may well be over 10,000 screws, and VIOLA: a $30K deck (should've been more, IMO). BEFORE~ AFTER~

Oldsmoboi ~ >>"Until that part falls off an kills someone behind them...."<< In Jersey, they inspect the wipers, horn, the gas cap and make sure the cat converter is in place. None of these items are physically inspected to see how well they're attached, nor are any of the other 3,996 parts an average car is built from. Nothing will change. >>"...or someone tries driving around with no functioning tail lights at night....and gets slammed into."<< I cannot TELL YOU how many vehicles I KNOW have automatic lighting, driving around at night with no lights on period. Prolly 1 a week. Have also seen brand. new. cars. with bulbs out. Nothing will change there, either. >>"...people get killed all the time on Florida highways from parts falling off other people's cars."<< Driving behind siennas, tacomas, FJs or tundras ??

Advocates vow challenges to Ariz. immigration law
balthazar replied to Intrepidation's topic in The Lounge
Don't hear much coverage of the AZ border rancher Krentz, found shot dead (along with his dog!) 1 day after his brother turned about 8 illegals found on the rancher's property over to immigration. Mexican national retaliation is the working theory. -
How can a find this significant NOT come with at least 1 pic of it untouched in the field ?? I mean, WTF?

The new Arizona law allows for an officer to use any suspicion they have of the person being illegal..... which is based on..... what criteria again?"<< Pulling up to a job site in a police cruiser and seeing who makes a mad dash to the south ??

Work continues to flow in for me- after a bit of mild slowness in Jan-Feb, I am back on a 6-day work week. Can't imagine what it would be like if I advertised or had my phone # listed somewhere.

I have a pin my G-G-GF (1838-1927) made from a silver dollar- he smoothed & engraved his initials on one side. Have some glass buttonhole studs a G-G-uncle made (1856-1943)- there were a number of glassblowers in that branch of the family. Furniture-wise I don't really have much from the family- it's more trinket things, but I do have a lot of old things in general. On topic: one is a cast iron/steel floor lamp that came out of my brother's house about 10-12 years ago. I would guess it is from the '20s. Took it all apart, cleaned all the metal up & repainted it, rewired it but kept the old, tarnished, brass swivel so you can angle the shade. I like the old stuff...

>>"License doesn't prove citizenship."<< I believe this differs from state-2-state. In NJ, I showed my BC to obtain a DL renewal (tho there are combinations of documents you can provide to obtain it). But in my case, indirectly, my DL was proven by my proof of citizenship. >>"...saying it's easy to fork over your passport (which is insane to carry at all times, and apparently unconstitutional)"<< It cannot be unconstitutional for an American citizen to carry around a passport 24/7. 'Passport cards' - wallet sized have been issued since '09... I don't think that would be "insane" to carry around. Bottom line is- things cannot be allowed to get wildly out of control before federal law is upheld by SOMEONE.
-
Those in this country with a green card are required to carry it 24/7. Any over-18 alien in this country is required by federal law (USC 1304) to carry their 'papers' 24/7, in non-compliance; federal law mandates their immigrant status be determined, with consequences thereafter. Since 'we're no better than any other 'citizen of the world', we should be glad to do likewise, right? -- -- -- -- -- I had to produce my driver's license to see my surgeon last month. I was outraged, I ranted & raved, threw magazines, kicked over potted plants; offended I could not just say who I was and have it be 'OK'. I'm an American, after all! I was escorted out by security and I plan to sue. Or I just produced it quietly... I disremember. -- -- -- -- -- I read the AZ law- no where did it say anyone could be 'pulled over for being hispanic'- so we can dispense with that tidbit of fear mongering/ race baiting. Text here : http://www.courthousenews.com/2010/04/16/AzSB1070.pdf >>"A LAW ENFORCEMENT OFFICER, WITHOUT A WARRANT, MAY ARREST A PERSON IF THE OFFICER HAS PROBABLE CAUSE TO BELIEVE THAT THE PERSON HAS COMMITTED ANY PUBLIC OFFENSE THAT MAKES THE PERSON REMOVABLE FROM THE UNITED STATES."<< GASP! How racist !! -- -- -- -- -- As for AZ- saw a new poll this morning; Brewer's approval rating jumped 16% in the last 2 weeks (40% -> 56%). That's better than the TOTUS's.

Apparently there's this quaint notion of illegals picking lettuce and string beans and nothing else, but the fact is that they are in hundreds of industries and yes; they ARE doing jobs Americans want. Esp with real unemployment over 15%. I've seen & heard this firsthand in the construction biz- heavily IA-invested companies can undercut market price and will in this economy- putting tax-paying Americans out of work. We should right our own ship before taking on more passengers.

This is NOT an anti-immigration sentiment, it's an anti-ILLEGAL immigration sentiment. Huge difference. And littering is 'nominally illegal'; note that Mexico treats illegal immigration to their country akin to a felony. Since this country is so awful on all fronts, perhaps we should follow their example. Very very few U.S. citizens have no immigrant component in their histories. It's not racial, it's about respecting the laws of the land and not what comes down to rewarding law breakers.

It's a good, amusing story, loki, thanks!
