  6. Senior Democrat senators said on Wednesday they would change a provision that imposes carbon taxes on imports following warnings that the clause in the House’s cap-and-trade bill could spark a global trade war. The House’s bill contained tough provisions to impose carbon tariffs, aimed at protecting American companies’ competitiveness against imports from countries without equivalent carbon emission controls to those in the US. Senator John Kerry, who is helping to write the senate’s version of the bill, said in a hearing on the issue on Wednesday: “We have already come to the conclusion in working on the Senate bill that we’re going to try and change that provision . . . we haven’t landed yet completely on where we come out”. Max Baucus, the Democrat senator who chairs the senate finance committee, said any provisions that “provoke retaliation from our trading partners will only hurt the same industries we’re trying to help”, adding that he was “confident we can craft legislation that strikes the right balance”. Differences in the two versions of the bill will eventually have to be reconciled before passing into law. http://www.ft.com/cms/s/0/f91e0ff4-6bf2-11...?nclick_check=1 President Barack Obama has warned the House’s carbon tariffs plan could send the wrong signal to trading partners. India called the measures “pernicious” while China said they would violate World Trade Organisation principles and amounted to “trade protectionism in the disguise of environmental protection”. A recent report from the WTO said that such “border tax adjustments” could in theory be made consistent with WTO rules, but trade lawyers stress that crafting such laws is likely to be very difficult in practice. Gary Horlick, a prominent trade attorney in Washington, told the Senate committee on Wednesday that border measures were likely to pose daunting practical problems and retribution against US exports from its trading partners on other environmental grounds. “If we re-interpret WTO rules to allow trade barriers based on how things are made, we open up a can of worms and might permit other countries to block our biotech exports, including major items such as corn, soybeans, and other crops,” he said. Mr Horlick said that other means of levelling the playing field, such as financial compensation or giving away permits to US companies, were much less likely to invite legal challenge in the WTO. But they could still be regarded as unfair subsidies if they distorted trade, he said. Lawyers stress the difficulty of working out the carbon content of imports to the US – particularly those that have been through multiple countries in a global supply chain – and then calculating the cost added by different carbon control regimes compared with the US system. Despite support from some trade lawyers, the likely legal position of carbon border taxes in the WTO remains murky. There are no unambiguously clear precedents for such measures, and decisions made by WTO arbitration panels do not in any case create binding precedents for future litigation. .Copyright The Financial Times Limited 2009 By Sarah O’Connor in Washington and Alan Beattie in London Published: July 8 2009 20:29 | Last updated: July 8 2009 20:29
  7. i paid my $7 to walk through both those planes when they flew into anderson airport. well worth it. i filled up a memory card somewhere with them. was going to the bank to dip into the "stash" for the donation 30 min flight but it was raining the day they were to do it.
  8. i was at the lowes motor speedway in charlotte nc for the september auto fair when i heard an unfamiliar prop plane drone above (i am just miles away from out county airport and our house has frequent local and military air traffic at times) i look up and low and behold a mighty giant lumbering in the sky circling whilst awaiting landing clearance. under the power of four wright-cyclone radial engines was the magnificent Liberty Belle.
  9. good one .... wait, you serious ? hehe
  10. i thought that was a prerequisite for driving such vehicles

  15. hmm... vinyl tops a fad huh? true they look terrible on some but others just dont look quite right without em. case in point the red one down there. i think at the end of the list this comment is the best spot on sonto100 #6 Tuesday, July 07, 2009 12:50:34 PM The person that wrote this article is just a frustrated English major who couldn't get any other job. He's not a car guy and shouldn't be taken seriously. i cant believe they didnt call out the 2 fast 2 furious crowd with the wings and crappy ground effects that are all different colors. at least they called out the spinners, now if they would start pulling the size of rims back down from a yard across. i knew the "evil" suv's would be brought up though.
  16. http://editorial.autos.msn.com/listarticle...umentid=1069499 There is a subtle but important difference between fashion and a fad. Fashion is the inevitable evolution and refreshment of taste and style in everything from clothing to automobiles, which keeps those things from getting tiresome and stale. Fashion drives innovation for the sake of innovation, and it is generally considered a good thing. On the other hand, fads such as fuzzy dice are as ephemeral and unpredictable as fashion, but in the end are just plain silly. With the benefit of hindsight, it’s generally pretty easy to recognize a fad, but for each of the designs, technologies or accessories below, there was a window in time and an enthusiastic audience that aligned perfectly to turn a dumb, pointless concept into an embarrassing reality. Sam Livingston, of Car Design Research, has seen plenty of fads come and go and even feels a bit nostalgic for some of them. “Remember, the ambitions behind most of these things were quite noble, I’m sure,” he says. “All of these things probably seemed like a good idea at the time.” Any list of the worst of anything is guaranteed to elicit some defensive feedback. So let's pre-empt that right now by saying that if you owned any of the automobiles or accessories on this list, we’re not judging you as a person — we’re judging your car. And whether you knew it or not at the time, people were probably judging your car for all the years you owned it. So a little poke to the soft spot you may have had in your heart for that vehicle might sting a bit, but somebody had to tell you — eventually.
  17. hobby lobby got their model cars 30% off this week (those that are modeler's know that its gettin tough to cough up $20 every time you want to for a model car) and when i swung by there this was chilling out in the parking lot.

    Oh, Crap

is there a code of laws for the neighborhood? i have a friend that had a dirtbike. a subdivision opened up behind their neighborhood so they bought the lot that was dead smack behind them to keep their backyard private. they fenced it in and all and my buddy would ride his bike back there. a cop shows up one day because someone in the adjacent subdivision complained about the noise. turns out that there was a set of bylaws for that development that stated no motorized recreational vehicles were allowed. it only took one complaint. the guy wouldnt even break a deal with him and let him ride it on certain days at a certain time. he couldnt ride on their first lot because it was now attached to that other neighborhood via theirs. ended up having to sell the thing. there may be something like that in yours. some research may reveal some tranquility in your future. or call the water company and see if you can up your tap size from the standard half inch tap to a 2 inch tap and set one "stuck" sprinkler on timer pointed at the garage... bwaa ha ha ah ahahha
  21. yup see stuff like that a lot. we had 3 people come in on a single day with missing or lacerated digits from table saws. just the other day we had a guy come in that mashed his finger in between his tractor and a plow he was hooking up. the most interesting story is the guy who nail-gunned his hand to the floor. they had to hammer it back out to get him to the hospital. the worst, a lady that got her hand pulled into a meat grinder. wow. hope you heal up fast, glad to hear it only needed stitches. fan blades have been known to be hungrier than that.
