  1. Ugly. But interesting. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/1977-Lincol...1QQcmdZViewItem
  2. Of course there will be strings attached- that's a given when dealing with the government. Also obvious is the fact that GM will be put under a microscope during the process. The problem arises when presupposition takes the place of facts, creating a negative mindset from the outset. Your posts on this are clear examples of just such a mindset. We on this site have followed all of the available details of GM's progress in restructuring itself over the last 5-10 years with our own microscope. With that as a given, it is unbelieveable to me that anyone here for that period of time could completely discount all of the obvious, and significant changes GM has already made. GM is not the same company it was even 2 years ago, let alone 5 or 10 years ago, or decades ago as so many still like to claim. That can only be bias or ignorance - take your pick. The long and short of this is that GM is requesting a loan and it is in our best interest as a nation to grant that request.
  3. What if, because we all re-adjust to a new, more cautious, economic reality people begin to keep their cars longer? Domestic cars tend to last an enormous length of time. In a society that starts to treat cars as less disposable with owners keeping them for a decade or so, might not the domestics start to look better to the general public? I didn't quite put this the way I wanted, so I hope the meaning comes across. EDIT: I guess what I'm saying is that I remember when people used to keep a car until it was completely hopeless, and that a time like that seems to be returning. Domestic cars tended to fare very well in that sort of market, they kept going until the bodies started to blow away in the wind. Old imports just tend to get recycled
  4. Sounds like some pretty low cost of ownership to me. :AH-HA_wink:
  5. Based on its own sales, Yes. But in PR, and positive perception it will be invaluable.
  6. No. They have already secured a workable agreement with the UAW that will begin to go into effect soon and show full effect in 2010. IIRC the annual savings is about 5 billion. The continued employment of those 3 million workers means that we all have a shot at staying alive economically - otherwise, do not pass go - go straight to Depression. The Volt embodies the technical capabilities of GM and is the ambassador to all who refuse to consider GM today. When funded, GM's R&D is world class. ALL of those things are major reasons to go forward with the loans.
  7. One key difference is that Joe Sixpack is armed...
  8. Live long enough to let the UAW agreement kick in reducing costs. Get the Volt to market. Expand E-flex Finance the R&D required for more alt fuel/electric/fuel efficient technologies Keep about 3 million people employed Pay interest to the govt. for starters.
  9. Kind of flies in the face of the poll The Griffon posted, doesn't it?
  10. I haven't gone that far... yet.
  11. Impressive! I left my earlier ones out when I posted. 1987 El Camino SS 1990 K3500 Silverado
  12. *Bump* Because it matters.
  13. Eldest here as well, I get it.
  14. What this entire debate boils down to is this: There is a train wreck coming. Some can't wait to watch it destroy their own homes. And some hope to prevent it. There is no middle ground.
  15. That's not mere bias, it is outright untruths and stupidity. I just can't believe the overwhelming idiocy of so many Americans.
  16. Even more oddly, I knew that you would. :AH-HA_wink: We've discussed the "Clown Prince" of GM management before.
  17. And what "genius" wrote this piece of misinformed garbage?
  18. Anyone praising the actions of Roger Smith is of questionable mental capacity. The man caused much of the mess GM has been dealing with since his tenure.
  19. Not a bad idea, but it might have been more effective here had such a facility opened in, say, 1968.
  20. Wow! That's a name from the past! I had it on an 8-track.
  21. Not well, most likely. Losing the global aspect of the business could be damaging to all concerned. However, GME may be overplaying their hand by dabbling in this possibility. If that leaves them in a more subordinate role vs. GM as a whole, I'd be happy with that. Lots of powerplays in motion right now.
  22. Not Holden! We need that here.
  23. May it bite them in the ass.
  24. It's a long process, my friend, look for us to be here when needed.
