  1. I found it. Before the VNC had a setting buried in the profile somewhere... that has moved/been expanded so the settings are now on the left of the VNC screen itself. Due to screen size, I only saw the top two options... the second option being similar to the old profile setting. The third option 'Other' was set to 'Items I started', and I got the No New Content because I haven't created any forum entry in the last couple days. Clicking that option off, VNC was back. I previously did not think of scrolling down because I didn't expect to see anything below 'By Time Period'. Nothing wrong with the layout... I just don't know why the system selected 'Items I Started".
  2. Yeah, from your description of what you were doing, I thought the same thing. Besides logging out/in and refreshing, I'm not sure wha... Ah... I know something I didn't check.
  3. Am I the only one who is having a problem with 'View New Content' showing nothing?
  4. I think the price is nuts, that its way too much Mustang and its names suck. However, I want to know all the legal info on how they passed the Fed regs. They claim to have three built. 200 in the pipeline... so I have to assume that none have been crash tested.
  5. About the same. Chiltons are still hard to find. Haynes are still easier to get. I've seen that Haynes are not keeping up with the times... i.e., more tech in cars and the latest Haynes seem to be missing details on where to fix things like relays and resistors. No mention of where to find a horn relay in a Sunfire. No details to find blower resistor or relays in a Tahoe. Annoying. I find more info on Youtube than Haynes anymore... but I still buy one for each car, just in case.
  6. Yes... but I'm not sure when. The next few weeks I'm likely to be in Brooklyn... I don't think I'll have a chance with the weather to jack the car up. I'll post back when I do.
  7. My problem will be prep, though I suppose I could use some long brushes to clean it up, followed by compressed air. Then application of JB with chop sticks. ;-) I'm not worried about the strength of the JB Weld itself, I'm worried about the pressure of the power steering breaking the bond between the line and JBW. Power Steering is one of the highest pressure lines on the car... after brakes and possible fuel. Any leakage makes this repair a fail. Sometimes I wish the rack would have just broken like a normal rack. I would have just gotten a new replacement and dropped frame and felt good about it.
  8. That would seem logical... but why would GM downplay the term Magnasteer after all the advertising of its greatness... and have a separate RPO for the same option?
  9. My experience with JB Weld is that it is basically a very tempermental product. If you get the mix just right.... and surface just clean enough.... and shake a dead chicken over it during a full moon, it will work perfectly, outlasting the part it fixes. Otherwise, it will just pop off as some as soon as you start the car. In this case, I fear that the JB Weld would get too far into the patch and block the line... or the pressure would be too much. What I really want to do is either put a bit of rubber tubing over it and a hose clamp directly over the area, or cut the line and put a compression fitting in. The problem is that where it has leaked in on the inside of a bend, making it really hard to fit a patch to it. The big problem is that on a W-body, the rack is just plain old inaccessible. So far, I have not even been able to figure out the size of the nuts holding the line on, as getting a wrench properly on the lines is a no-go. I have stopped at the j-yard several times in search of a line, but have not gotten lucky enough to catch one in a car that was pulled apart. Plus weather and time have really conspired against me for this repair. Last time I did a full rack swap was back in 1992 (the FWD A-bods were identical to the W-bods in this aspect) and it was awful dropping the subframe. I dread doing this on the Grand Prix, as it lacks really good places to put jackstands... and if you jack it too high/too far back, it likes to see-saw. I still believe I can swap/repair the line without actually dropping the frame.
  10. So one of my items on the "need to fix" board is the 2004 Grand Prix GTP, which is currently sidelined due to a pinhole leak in one of the power steering lines. Not the lines to the rack, but one of the steel lines ON the rack... which I have found that nobody actually makes replacements for. Not wanting to pay for a new rack when this one is otherwise fine, and not wanting to drop the frame to swap out a rack, I have been investigating other ideas... The 2004 apparently has "Magnasteer II". Earlier models had just "Magnasteer". However, when I source parts (from Rock Auto, for example) the note that RPO NV8 (Magnasteer) and NV7 (variable assist) use the same rack unit. I have also found that some racks replace just "Magnasteer II" cars, but others replace all Magnasteer cars. From my understanding of what Magnasteer is, all the magic is happening in the rack unit, with a pigtail that connects to some sort of computer. But if all the special parts are in the rack, then why would both RPO NV8 (Magnasteer) and NV7 (variable assist) use the same part? In the meantime, I'd just like to get my hands on a broken rack that has a leak free line to swap onto my rack, as I believe the line is the same regardless if the rack is NV7, NV8 or just standard power steering. Anyone here have a busted W-body steering rack they wouldn't mind parting out?
  11. No pool. Going out to a pool is just not in the cards.
  12. When I lost my weight in 2004 (460 to 230), I cut my calories to 1200~1500, rode my exercise bike 1~2 hours a day and ate 12 tiny meals a day... usually 100-125 calories of nuts, cereal, vegetables, fruits, Slim fast shakes... anything to try to shut off the appetite. I put a ton of salt, pepper or hot sauce on things, as that helped make it palatable (and hot sauce is a known appetite suppressant). I drank about 2 gallons of water, as well. 11 month later, I was wearing LT shirts and was downright skinny. I kept it off for about 3 years... by then life changed and my biking routine was broken. I want to do it again, but quite frankly, my knees simply won't let me.
  13. I don't think its too big of a project, but keep in mind that these trucks rust in places that can be hard to repair or get patches for. And in the end, you have a truck that will be worth a LOT less than those '50s GMCs you have looked at before. You have to do a lot more poking and prodding before you buy to ensure the restoration candidate is solid and not bondo... and know exactly what parts are available (and know those parts will not always be as perfect as the OEM panels). That said, once you are done with your donor vehicle, I likely could use a few pieces for my '76 Blazketcase.
  14. This is what I was going to recommend, if a compression test does not satisfy you. Compression test will tell you how well the engine is sealing and getting the oil tested will look for what types of metal are wearing... so you know if you might have bearings or other things wearing. Obviously, your ear is a good tool, as well... a quiet engine is a good engine. Also, I consider good, steady oil pressure to be a sign of a good engine (sure, a oil pump can be replaced, but its so labor intensive, most engines live out their pre-rebuilt life with one pump. As for the OBD2 reader... its more than just codes. You also can follow sensor data as you drive. While not newbie territory, you can uncover some problems that are not always real obvious.
  15. No, night blindness involves the rod cells in the retina becoming unresponsive. My vision is actually scary good (can read the bottom line on the eye chart if my blood pressure is not elevated)... and I can see in almost complete darkness, far beyond my friends... my issue, if you would call it that, is that my irises simply take a long time to open and close. So when I emerge from my cave, I'll stumble around like a dying vampire for 5-10 minutes before I can take it all in... sometimes, I can't... and have to resort to squinting or sunglasses during the brightest days. Same thing for night, once they dilate, they stay that way... I generally look away from oncoming bright lights to avoid getting ghosting in my main vision.
  16. LOL.. still trying to get all the bird crap off it. I don't know what they are feeding these things, but all this precip we've been getting is not making a dent. At least the passenger side is kinda clean. I'm going to have to break down and take it to the self serve car wash and steam clean the outside. So much to do... no time. However, I got my key fobs today... and while one vendor screwed up, the second one I purchased from threw in new cases... so I have a fob for the Tahoe. Too bad it only is working the rear hatch. Driver's side lock actuator seems dead and both doors seem to have binding linkage. Previous owner switched out the inside door latches by drilling out the rivet, but didn't put a screw in... so when you unlock the door, instead of moving the latch, it moves the inside door handle around. Lovely. Will have to continue pulling apart doors to get this locking situation under control. Funny, slightly related story... the other key fob is for the Sunfire. Yes, the Sunfire that's been in the family for 9 years. We've never had fobs. The car is a loaded convertible... 2.4, big wheels, TCS, steering wheel controls... all the "luxury" items a J-body would have (sorry no leather available in these). When the car was bought, it was 6 years old and it never occurred to us that the owner might have lost the fobs... so we just assumed that j-bodies didn't have keyless entry. So while investigating the Tahoe, I came across a reference that showed that Sunfires had trunk release cables... ONLY if there was no keyless entry. Well, there is no trunk release... So I checked the SPID and there is RPO AU0... keyless entry. I look in the trunk and there is the RKE unit and the programming pigtail. Damn! In my family, we have no end to the questions. Can you do this? Can this be done? How do you make it that way? However, everyone once in a blue moon, you miss asking the RIGHT question, like "Why does the otherwise loaded Sunfire have no key fobs?" The closest we can was when my mother once lamented "I wish the Sunfire had keyless entry". How close we were. Well, I finally have a key fob and I'm awaiting the car's return to program it.
  17. Maybe they added more tint to the factory tint on this one. Backing is not a real issue, aside from getting used to a "new" vehicle. If I can put the 26 foot straight truck into a loading dock with only side view mirrors, a Tahoe is a breeze. In any case, my eyes adjust (slowly) to the dark when I've turned around looking rearward. I think its driving forward, were I need to check for traffic or trouble behind me... then looking into the dark, my eyes especially can't adjust quickly enough, especially if I'm driving into the sun. I'd ignore the rear view and just use the sides, but I know its there and habits are hard to change. I'll get used to it. I'm just surprised how much it tones down my vision. Things will be better once I replace the busted driver's sideview mirror.
  18. Unfortunately, I suspect what Lutz is doing is at tuner shop production levels. How many Karmas are out there in the wild? How many Karma bodies are waiting for a V8? Are Karma bodies still being made? CAN they be made again? I don't have numbers to put with these questions, but I suspect they are closer to hundreds than thousands. I don't know why Lutz would even be interested in such a piddly project, except to get one for himself.
  19. Well, that and a backside leak... at the time, the tire was on the vehicle, so spraying soap on the back was hit or miss... but again, I would have expected to hear a leak that kills a tire in 8 hours. I did test the valve, but I didn't actually test the schrader valve itself... I suppose it could have been loose. Again, no noise. I suppose it could have been popping off bead once it hit a certain deflatedness. I just have to chalk up this one to it being a tire going south quickly. No tire that goes from inflated to flat in 30 minutes is long for this world. "New" used tire was $30 and is holding air so far. I'll have to accelerate my plans to get 4 matched tires. These LT265/75-R16s seem to be somewhat hard to find. *ARGH!* I just remembered that I still have not checked the door sticker to see if these are the stock size with the Z71 option.
  20. Just one piece. Thick rim, with no obvious porosity or chrome peeling. It was once a nice rim, just not my style.
  21. So after driving the Tahoe a bit, I have to ask: How the hell do people drive these SUVs with the entire rear of the vehicle blacked out with tint?!? I am a consummate mirror checker. I hit all my mirrors with a glance about every 10 seconds, even when driving straight ahead on the freeway. When my vision is used to the daylight, its super annoying to try to see through all that tint. Its factory standard that all the '90s-gen 2-door Tahoes/Yukons/Blazers to have tint on all the windows behind the driver, isn't it? ---- So I was having trouble keeping the junk tires on the truck full of air. Once I finally got it home and aired up the tires properly and seated back in bead, the troublesome tires stopped leaking... but one different tire after a couple trip started leaking badly. It would go flat in 8 hours and all the soapy water could not fine the leak (I also could not hear it). Last night in the snow, I topped up the tire and 30 minutes later, 3 miles from home, the tire deflated and shredded. Since I didn't want to freeze and since I valued the rim less than I wanted to get a tow (I still have no spare), I just got back in the truck and finished driving, albeit very slowly. Luckily, driving with the wheel in the deeper snow, the tire carcass held up and the rim didn't get screwed... at least until I had to take a torch and giant crowbar and BF hammer to get the rim unstuck from the drum. Ugh. 2 hours in the snow and it came off... a little nicked on the backside, but again, these rims are aftermarket garbage. What a day.
  22. Evel Knievel approves.
  23. Favorite quote I ever heard about the Lincoln Navigator and Aviator was "To make them uglier, you'd need a bigger truck."
  24. Yeah, I knew about paintref.com.... (I suspected you might be using that), but they only show a car in a particular color... not necessarily the one you are interested in.
  25. It would be cool if there was a site (besides Google Image search) where you could pick a year, make, model, bodystyle and color and have a picture come up. Would be a lot of work, though. Back when GM had 31 different colors available on a given model, it would be nice to see how each looked dressed in such a color.
