  1. I've been to Pearl Harbor and it's an awesum experience. If anyone gets a chance to go there, they should also go to the "National Cemetary of the Pacific", which is also on Oahu, HI. As I understand it, any serviceman or woman who served in the Pacific may be burried there. It includes veterans from Korea and Vietnam. The reason you don't see much in the newspapers, is back about 20 - 30 years ago, when most of our products were produced in Japan (not China), the Japanese companies told the news media, they would withdraw their advertising if articles about Pearl Harbor appeared on December 7th. Team that with PC and you get the drift. FDR is turning over in his grave. The "Day of Infamy" has not lived on forever.
  2. Hmmmmmm .......................................... A 30K dealer markup, I guess I'd look for another dealer! Must be a ZO,OOO - 6. Note: Z=3.
  3. GM - Vette Ford - Mercury Mountaineer Chrysler - Dodge Charger Euro - None Asian - None My one and only would be a loaded CTS and I'd forget about the list.
  4. Great Review - mkaresh! In addition: I've never had a torque steer problem with my FWD Caddy's, except when turning while applying WOT. While the Deville (now the DTS) has stopped being my car of choice since 1994, it hasn't been bad car to drive when furnished, by my dealer, as a loaner. I expect that I'd like the DTS even more. I understand that Cadillac is working on arm extentions for drivers that can't reach door handles or trip computer reset buttons. Honestly, I sat in a performance DTS at my dealer last week (had the CTS in for an oil change) and it was really great. Fit and finish were equal to the best I've seen. The steering wheel was fine. The DTS is built for an older driver or someone with a few bucks that doesn't want to drive Japanese. It serves it's intended owner really well!
  5. You said that you were building 5 shelves. The design shows 3, so can I assume that 2 more shelves will be added? If so, will one of the shelves be at floor level? 5 shelves should be strong enought to brace the verticles for shoes. Carpenter's glue is a great idea. If you need a back brace, one board across the bottom should do it. One across the top and bottom would make it super sturdy. However, since it's only for shoes, your original design should be OK.
  6. Fell asleep in the 13th, woke up to find the Sox had won again, a homer in the 14th and an insurance run walked in. It may be a sweep tonight. Then we can get rid of those lousy Fox stooges (Joe buck and company) who are more interested in commercials, replays, interviews with some base coach during the game and not just watching great baseball by both teams.
  7. White Sox of course! The little team that everyone put down, because it had no superstars and a funny little manager that spoke "spanglish". Ozzie is great!
  8. There is a simple solution to this problem, actually two solutions. 1. Arizona and a few other states have dark sky's laws. These laws prohibit city street lights and business from having lighted signs. Sedona Arizona is an example. The Toyota's with defective lights could be sold there and be legal. They would comply with "Dark Sky's" and provide entertainment as they drive around smashing into each other. 2. Sell these cars to elderly people that are afraid to drive after dark. These "customers" can be found in any over "55" comunity. Stalling engines might also be good. It would remind the driver to go and have his/her pacemaker checked. http://www.cheersandgears.com/public/style_emoticons//AH-HA_wink.gif
  9. Before TV there was Radio (AM only). When TV started. It didn't come on until 4:30 pm and ended programming at midnight. Uncle Miltie. Steve Allen. Stock car racing on TV every friday night. Playing softball (16 in) in the street or alley 'til the ball hit a car down the street. Then it was run like hell and hide. Playing canasta or blackjack until midnight, on your best friends front porch (summer only). Collecting empty pop bottles in the neighborhood for the 2 cent refund and spending the money in the neighborhood grocery store gumball machine. Fast pitching, with a rubber ball, against a factory wall. Catching snakes in the nearby railroad yards and bringing them to school. Telling your parents that your black eye was from falling down and hitting your eye on a door knob. Your best friends older brother didn't do it. Dodge ball at the local school gym always ended up between you and the kid that lived across the street. Standing up to the neighborhood bully! After you beat him, he wanted to be your friend. Riding "no hands" on your bike. Your best friend had something called "Polio" and his older older brother died from it.
  10. The bar top is 3/4 in oak plywood with 3 coats of gloss polyurethane. I hope to put two more coats on this winter. The glass squares are coasters a neighbor gave me. I don't care for them, but the neighbors are really good friends, so they'll stay on the bar. The bar edge is oak ($10 per linear foot), so I had one step-son help with cutting and mitering. The rest of the bar and back bar is oak or oak plywood. While I worked in an office most of my life, I enjoy fixing things around the house and woodworking in particular. Life should be fun, not all work.
  11. I can do most everything except for any heavy lifting. That's what my step-sons are for. Here's my basement bar, which I built from scratch, using three base cabinets in the backbar. The rest was built board by board. I still have to complete some trim and minor electrical work. The next project is to complete my workshop, which is the door alongside the backbar.
  12. My first car was a '57 Ford convertible (not the flip-top). Loved the styling, but not the bondo the original owner used on the rocker panels. Both the trunk floor and the front (passenger seat) floor rusted through. Still, since it was my first, I loved that car. I believe that '57 and '59 Ford were the only years that Ford outsold Chevy in a long time.
  13. A few more comments: Panera sucks, but the wife loves it, so I get Broccoli Cheese soup and a Siera Turkey sandwich. About Multi-Ethnic Families My niece (Polish and Slovenian) married a Hawiian (Hawiian, Japanese, French and German) So my great niece and nephews are all of the above. The 34 year old step-son (and right-wing nut) is marrying a Jamaican girl (who would have figured) November 1st on a Princess cruise. She's asked me to give her away. My wife and I will have a Jamaican daughter-in-law, but there's not much chance of kids, as they are too much into themselves. Still, for someone who grew up somewhere between Beaver and his brother, life has become very interesting.
  14. Brian has a lot to say, but I think my wife would break it down to one important sentence. "I simply had a father who cared and loved me and helped me pursue my goals and a good network of peers and role models." My wife's ex was not a good father or role model. As a result, her boys are disfunctional. She believes that boys will listen to (and obey) a male, before they will listen to a female (Mother). She also believes that, "Boys need a strong male role model" and "It takes a Village to raise a child." Her ex moved them 28 times in 10 years looking for work. She always had to work (he was out of work 6 months of every year) to pay their bills. There was always some little old lady or neighbor who would step in an help (her village) when things would go look bad. The 28 year old will tell people that I've been a better father to him than his Dad, but the damage was done long before I came into the picture. Still, I can only hope that some day they will recognize the importance of "our family".
  15. Had AT&T Wireless for about 8 years with no problems, until my phone finally broke from being dropped a few hundred times. Since AT&T had been merged with Cincular, I moved to Cingular and got a new phone. It's a Nokia and OK, but not perfect, still it works better than my wife's samsung. Cingular service has been great. My wife (and step-sons) have T-mobile. The 28 year old has a fancy phone which has been a piece of junk and my wife complains about service. Customer service has been a nightmare. Still, I only use about 60 minutes a month, compared to my wife's (and step-sons) thousands of minutes.
  16. Apparently, the front landing gear on other A320's has been stuck the same way 7 or 8 other times. Wonder if they'll have a recall, or maybe they'll get an "unreliable" from CR.
  17. Airbus sucks! Remember they built the gear that locked in the wrong position. Airbus also built the A320 without a fuel dump valve, which would have saved hours of circling to burn off fuel. The real hero's are the pilots and crew. The crew kept the passengers calm and the pilot's landed the plane with such precision that most passengers said that it was the smoothest landing they've ever experienced. I flew to Vegas in an A320 about 2 weeks ago. It was a nice plane but it doesn't handle turbulence as well as a Boeing. Takeoff turbulence was pretty bumpy and lasted longer than I would have wanted.
  18. The Russians knew how to beat a pretty good looking car with an "ugly stick" and turn it into a ZIL or in this case ZIS. A lot of their cars were "bad copies" of Packards. Maybe that's what killed Packard. http://www.cheersandgears.com/public/style_emoticons//AH-HA_wink.gif
  19. While I'd enjoy visiting some of the cities shown on the map, particularly Toronto, the cost is prohibitive. One of my step-sons is getting married on the Star Princess (Caribbean) in November. The cost is about $600 per person for a balcony stateroom double and $750 for the second step-son in his own inside cabin. Air fare is $115 roundtrip from Chicago (Midway) to Ft. Lauterdale. Cost for the whole wedding party will be less than the cost of one ticket on the Great lakes Cruise. It's the Caribbean for me until the Great Lakes price goes down.
  20. You're missing the point, guys... It should atleast be offered for those that want it. Whether that's a small number or not shouldn't matter. It helps the perception of the vehicle. Not even offering it is retarded... For whatever reason; good enough without it, etc. If you disagree, you're a retard. End of story. "Good enough never is." [post="14364"][/post] BV is right! Nav should at least be offered for those that want it! Both Honda and Toyota advertize the Nav systems in their vehicles. I have a Nav in CTS and the Trailblazer. They are toys that I wanted, no matter what the cost. Who cares! Still I use it quite a bit. I worked for 35 years and now that I'm retired, I should be able to buy what I want. Besides, none of my friends have Nav systems and whoever has the most toys wins. So far, I'm in second place to the brother-in-law with 2 plasma TV's, but he doesn't have a Nav system, just an SSR.
  21. Balthazar, Evok or Walt probably know the correct development interval, but I believe that Studebaker produced the Avanti, from design sketch to production vehicle in about 2 years. The sketch to prototype took about a year and the production Avanti's appeared as 1963's, about a year later. That interval is at least equal to Toyota's current "claimed development time". Unfortunately, the Avanti didn't save Studebaker. Maybe they tried to put all their money into one car (a low volume vehicle) when they should have been updating their higher volume, profit making cars.
  22. All exotics are RED, except for those that are British Racing Green and/or Silver!
  23. Went to the Imperial Palace (Las Vegas) last week. Great cars, but the selling price of most was a little high. One Duesenberg had an asking price of $2,500,000. Highlight of the museum was the old Duesenbergs. It was worth the $6.50 to get in.
  24. The next door neighbors got some info from their relatives last night. Their parents got valuable papers and some other stuff into the boat before it was trailered to high ground. Their house is intact, but filled with about four feet of water and mud. Don't know if it can be saved. tmp - Hope your brothers OK. The situation's not good, but if there's any counrty in the world that can overcome this disaster, it's the USA.
  25. My next door neighbors parents are in their 70's. They lived on the gulf coast of Alabama. Their house and all their belongings are gone, but they are alive and living with some of their kids. They fled the communists in Viet Nam, back in the 1970's and came to Alabama, which is now home. They will rebuild, because they can, and love this country and the state of Alabama. My neighbor got his fishing boat out of harms way (at the Alabama shore) before Katrina struck. He's going down this weekend to see if his family needs help.
