President Offers Automakers Little Encouragement
20 YEARS LATER!!! at a time when the entire american industry was struggling Irrelevant Conclusion Are you just going to use logical fallacies for the rest of the thread?

President Offers Automakers Little Encouragement
In desperation, the Chrysler Corporation on September 7, 1979 petitioned the United States government for US$1 billion in loan guarantees to avoid bankruptcy. At the same time, Lee Iacocca, a former Ford executive, was brought in to take the position of CEO, and proved a capable public spokesman for the firm. A somewhat reluctant Congress authorized the guarantees, prodded by Chrysler workers and dealers in every congressional district who feared the loss of their livelihoods. With such help and a few innovative cars (such as the K-car platform), especially the invention of the minivan concept, a market where Chrysler brands are still important, Chrysler avoided bankruptcy and slowly fought its way back up. By the early 1980s, the loans were being repaid at a brisk pace and new models based on the K-car platform were selling well. This is bad for the government or GM or taxpayers.... how? Just think for a SECOND if Toyota or Honda were in deep financial trouble that Japanese government wouldn't help them out. Heck Japanese government keeps the value of the Yen low just to keep Sony, Toyota, and Honda happy. Airbus is taxpayer subsidised while Boeing is laying off workers.... You think the europeans don't want to knife GM also?

President Offers Automakers Little Encouragement
The bush administration is FAR from conservative. They believe in LARGER government, less federalism, and fiscal irrisponsibility. Sure they may be socially conservative, but that isn't the same thing as politically conservative. The are most certainly not fiscally conservative. Just because taxes are lower doesn't mean it's "right".

You don't think that if GM didn't have a $1500 pension Albatross hanging around their neck with every car they sell they wouldn't have to cut corners?

Uh, by all accounts Chrysler is still standing today... and the government actually MADE MONEY on the Chrysler bailout since it held stock in the company AND Chrysler paided the loan back ahead of schedule. It was a very smart business move.

Buick Lineup Starting to Look Stale
Starting?

XLR-V Starts at $97,485
Chas really wants a regular XLR, but with the way he drives it would be about a week before he wrapped it around a tree. I try not to get in the car with him driving. I told him his next car is a 1982 Benz diesel with a defective turbo. Still..... I potentially see one of these in my future.

Well... I supposed someone would have to date you...

Enclave vs RX 330 vs FX45 vs Touareg
The Enclave stacks up very very competitavly against the MDX, XC90, and the Pacific. The MDX is really starting to look old.

Any chance of the G6 getting a DOHC V-6?
When you buy a Cadillac, you pay for the "extras". When you buy a Cadillac, your first concern is not fuel mileage.
-
Any chance of the G6 getting a DOHC V-6?
The market is wrong. The market is reacting to what Honda & Driver and Toyota Trend are spoon feeding them.

Any chance of the G6 getting a DOHC V-6?
Sorry, he ment to say the 5.3 in the mid priced Impala SS

Enclave vs RX 330 vs FX45 vs Touareg
The Buick looks quite competitve against these. The Toureg and RX look dated on the outside already and the Toureg's interior is busy and nothing special. The Infinity doesn't compete with the Enclave, it competes with the SRX and X5. I think the Buick would sell well if it wasn't a Buick.

In General How did you like the show!
Drew Dowdell replied to capriceman's topic in North American International Auto Show in Detroit (NAIAS)I liked the show overall. The number of ill behaved little kids annoyed me <shakes cane>, but I got my revenge. I was sitting in the new Escalade and there was this rotten little brat climbing all over the inside. He was pushing, pulling, twisting every button he could find to see what he could break. He climbed into one of the second row captian's chairs and I saw my chance. I quickly hit the "flip and fold" button for that seat. His mother saw it happen but though he did it. Pulled him out of the car and gave him a good walloping. I was in a good mood for the rest of the day. I chatted with the Ferrari ladies for a little while. I had my Ferarri laptop with me and showed it to them. They acted like it was the coolest thing they'd seen all day.... admitedly they looked pretty bored before I walked up. I had 3 people ask if I worked for Ferarri during my stops to use the laptop. 1 of them offered to buy the laptop on the spot. The people at the Volvo display wore those creapy 70s teal blue suits with white shoes. They were nice and knowlageable. We spent a good amount of time going over the XC90. Chas's parents are considering one. Again there was a woman narrating a Chrysler vehicle as if she was a porn star. This time it was the Crossfire <NYIAS 2004, it was the Magnum>. If I notice it at NYIAS this year, I'll be sure Chrysler does it on purpose. The Renessance center is very nice, but it's easy to get lost in. You almost need a NAV system to get around.

Oh where oh where...
this isn't MySpace..... take it there.
-
Navigation system
I made it to Detroit and back without NAV. For the last little bit of the trip trying to get to the Ren center, I used OnStar.
-
Sexual Preference
Interesting... so about 25% of the C&G population is of an "alternative" sexuality.

Cadillac Announces Pricing For 2007 Escalade
Not everyone wants NAV. An option either way is nice.

Pontiac Astre
If you want it, I'm sure I can negotiate a reasonable price for it. I'm sure he'd give you $50... maybe even $75..... to take it. It looks like hell.

Pontiac Astre
There is actually one of these at a little garage around here.

Does GM tap their vehicles at the auto show??
All you need is a little fine print at the bottom of the ticket stub. *"We reserve the right to record marketing data via text, audio, video or other means"
