2017 Tokyo Motor Show: Subaru Viziv Performance Concept is A Possible WRX Preview

    Sign in to follow this

Whether it looks like this or will be watered-down remains to be seen

Subaru's showing for this year's Tokyo Motor Show is the Viziv Performance Concept and a number of people believe this is the preview for the next WRX.

It certainly looks the part with large air intakes up front, hood scoop, flared out fenders, 20-inch wheels, rear diffuser, and a number of carbon fiber trim pieces. Size-wise, the Viziv Performance Concept is 182.2 inches long, 76.7 inches wide, and 56.3 inches tall. This makes it slightly bigger than the current WRX.

We don't know many details on the interior and what is powering the concept. Subaru does say the Viziv Performance Concept comes equipped with a next-generation version of the EyeSight system, navigation, and rear-facing cameras that take place of the side-view mirrors.

World Premiere of Subaru VIZIV Performance Concept at Tokyo Motor Show 2017

Tokyo, October 25, 2017 – Subaru Corporation today unveiled the Subaru VIZIV Performance Concept* at the 45th Tokyo Motor Show 2017.

The Subaru VIZIV series of concept models embodies the brand’s vision for the future of making cars that deliver Enjoyment and Peace of Mind to its customers. Packaged in the first sedan body of the series, the Subaru VIZIV Performance Concept draws on iconic models symbolizing superior Subaru driving performance and the Symmetrical AWD layout powered by a boxer engine honed over more than five decades of development. In sports sedan form, it conveys the concept of driving enjoyment that Subaru will continue to pursue. In anticipation of widespread future deployment of automated driving technologies, advanced driver assist functions combining the next-generation EyeSight system with other devices have been installed in a sedan body encouraging active enjoyment of driving, to express Subaru’s distinctive worldview of driving with Enjoyment and Peace of Mind.

*VIZIV is a coined word originating from the phrase “Vision for Innovation.”

Main Specifications of Subaru VIZIV Performance Concept

    • Body size (overall length × width × height): 4,630 × 1,950 × 1,430 mm
    • Wheelbase: 2,730 mm
    • Tire size: 245/40 R20
    • Seating capacity: 5 persons

    Design Features
To express the distinctive enjoyment of driving a Subaru, the VIZIV Performance Concept draws on previous models symbolizing the Subaru driving experience: the Legacy, which defined Subaru as a drivers’ car, the Impreza, which took the World Rally Championship by storm, and the WRX, which still dominates motor racing around the world. Based on Subaru’s shared “Dynamic × Solid” design philosophy, this next-generation sports sedan encapsulates driving enjoyment.

Driving performance is highlighted by a rigid, forward-thrusting body with low center of gravity, the dynamic flare of the fenders, the use of carbon fiber parts in the bumpers, fenders, and roof, and the bold glimpse of the exhaust in the rear bumper.

The three-dimensional form of the front grill flanked by hawkeye headlights hints at the boxer engine they conceal, and muscular fenders on all four corners of the body testify to the reliability of the Symmetrical AWD. Maintaining consistency with previous Subaru concept cars and production models, the VIZIV Performance Concept embodies the Subaru powertrain, which is part of the brand’s identity.

    Advanced Driver-Assist Technologies
Subaru has teamed advanced driver-assist technologies scheduled for launch around 2020 with the high performance offered by the boxer engine and Symmetrical AWD to create a sports sedan symbolizing the Enjoyment and Peace of Mind to be expected of its cars. By also incorporating further enhancements to EyeSight driver-assist technology, radar, and highly accurate GPS and navigation systems, Subaru continues to pursue ultimate levels of safety in the aim of eliminating automobile accidents.

This is a hot looking car, Love that Japan has legally changed to allow cameras for use in place of the side mirrors. Be interesting to see how they show it on a screen inside the car. I agree, this is probably the next WRX / STI auto for them.

Subaru has one of the greatest disconnects between concepts and production cars of any maker. This car means nothing to me. Let's not forget how badass this looked-

That was my first thought seeing the concept.

Subaru has announced pricing for the 2020 Subaru Legacy and 2020 Subaru Outback. Both get modest price increases, but also increases in base equipment.  The Legacy starting price is $200 more than last year at $24,995, and the Outback is $300 more at $26,645.
Some of the biggest equipment upgrades is that Subaru's Eyesight now features Advanced Adaptive Cruise Control with Lane Centering, a heads up monitoring system, LED headlights for low and high beam, and high beam assist.
Both cars are built on Subaru's new global platform that offers increased safety, and reductions in noise, vibration, and harshness. The base engine is a revised 2.5 liter boxer-four that produces 182 hp and 176 lb-ft of torque. An upgraded 2.4T boxer engine is standard in Limited XT models and produces 260 horsepower at 5,600 rpm and 277 lb-ft of torque at 2,000 rpm.  Both engines come with start-stop to improve fuel efficiency.
Fuel economy figures are as follows:
      Legacy 2.5 - 35 MPG highway
Legacy XT - 32 MPG highway
      Outback 2.5 - 33 MPG highway
Outback XT - 30 MPG highway
The only transmission available is Subaru's Lineartronic CVT that now has an 8-speed manual shift mode via paddles on the steering wheel.
Six different trims are available on the Legacy and seven different trims available on the Outback. Inside, the infotainment system features dual 7.0 inch touch screens.  The upper screen controls the audio with Apple Car Play and Android Auto, while the lower screen controls climate control, controls for Eyesight, and other vehicle systems.
Both the Legacy and Outback are built in Lafayette, IN, and will go on sale this fall.

Subaru of America Sets New Sales Record with Outback, Forester and Ascent Leading the Charge to Best-Ever April Sales

Best April ever – monthly sales increase 7.7 percent over April 2018 89 consecutive months of yearly, month-over-month growth Best April ever for Outback, Forester and Ascent 62 consecutive months of more than 10,000 Outbacks sold 69 consecutive months of more than 10,000 Foresters sold Subaru of America, Inc. today reported 57,288 vehicle sales for April 2019, a 7.7 percent increase compared with April 2018, and the best April in the history of the company. The automaker also reported year-to-date sales of 214,042, a 5.5 percent gain compared with the same period in 2018.

April marked the 62nd consecutive month of 40,000+ vehicle sales for the automaker. Outback, Forester and Ascent sales were notably strong as each model achieved its best April ever. Outback posted a 16.3 percent increase, while Forester posted an 8.1 percent increase compared to April 2018. In addition, 6,512 of the all-new 3-row Ascent SUVs were delivered in April.

Also in April, Subaru was awarded their fifth consecutive “Most Trusted Brand” award by the Kelley Blue Book Brand Image Awards. Forester and Ascent earned spots on Parents Magazine’s 10 Best Family Cars of 2019. In addition, Ascent made the list of 12 Best New Cars for 2019 from Autotrader.

“April saw another Subaru monthly sales record and the reveal of our all-new 2020 Subaru Outback at the New York International Auto Show, both strong indicators of a record sales year to come,” said Thomas J. Doll. “And thanks to the amazing efforts of our retailers, both the current Outback and new Forester maintained a very strong sales pace in a highly competitive marketplace.”

“Thanks to our retailer network, we are able to count April as another win in a highly competitive industry,” said Jeff Walters, Senior Vice President of Sales. “We’re thrilled to receive Kelley Blue Book’s ‘Most Trusted Brand’ for a fifth consecutive year as it recognizes our commitment to our customers, as well as to providing drivers with the safest, most capable vehicles in the market.” Carline

    • Yeah. Because GM has always done the honorable thing. I'm not even going to begin to go into GM and honorable thing.   Then there's Toyota Honda Dodge or pick your make. They all cut bulspit corners, and their lawyers are bigger than yours.      Don't get me wrong. I'm not picking on any brand. I'm saying it's cheaper to build spit and sell it with a good lawyer behind you.    Then there's government regulation.  That regulation forces everyone to build spit and sell it with the cheapest part they can find at the maximum profit they can get.    I'm an auto enthusiast like everyone else here. But I can't stand nickel-and-dimed bullcrap for the sake of profit. If anyone would really like to discuss nickel-and-dimed full of crap to make maximum profit I am here.  I've owned several makes over several years and I see where nickel-and-dimed crap destroys a otherwise good product.   Then sometimes it's just penny-pinching over safety. You mentioned GM. I mention ignition switch.
    • After never having seen a new GS ever on road...far upstate NY the last week, I counted 3 of them. Nondescript, and not as interesting as the previous one in some details, but bigger and smoother. Good look on road, and total sleeper. Nothing looks different, at all. Add in white, gray, and silver as the 3 I saw...and nope.
    • After a couple thousand miles in a 2.3T/10-speed 2019 Mustang convertible, and its horridly uncomfortable seats and interior, but amazing drive quality and feel...I'm looking forward to the new Explorer. Funny how not everyone knows it's new, but the ground up remake is massive, RWD base and getting rid of the previous awkward space inside. Too bad, as with most, the interior is a lot of cheaper bits, and blah black plastic design. Not been a fan of Ford's gray & white IT coding looking infotainment either, or how it operates day to day. But...looks like a GREAT package with guts to back it up. Already seeing them on the road, quite a bit in the northeast.
    • Great review, especially of the overall feel and dynamics, 2.4T included. We continue to be impressed at the feel and feedback everyone thinks of with the 2.4T, and look forward to it in my upcoming 2020 Outback on order. The Ascent is "not a bus" like a Traverse, etc. can sometimes feel. This is a heavier, larger, etc. vehicle than any other on the global platform, so it goes down the road with a different refinement than something like a Forester. Very rarely does anyone who's not familiar, even notice a Subaru is a CVT, with the stepped programming. You usually do, if higher RPM or cruising, and ask for more power, when it doesn't "step" as much so to say. Good & fair write up👍
