    By William Maley

    Staff Writer - CheersandGears.com

    February 1, 2013

At the Los Angeles Auto Show last November, Audi announced they would be offering four models with the option of a diesel engine. The first of those four, the 2014 Audi A8L TDI will be the first to arrive in the U.S. in the spring and have a base price of $83,395 (includes $895 for destination).

The A8L TDI comes with a 3.0L TDI V6, producing 240 horsepower and 406 pound-feet of torque. Audi's quattro all-wheel drive is standard. Even with the extra weight of TDI being in the long-wheel base model only, Audi says the A8L TDI can reach 60 in 6.4 seconds and gets 24 city/36 highway/28 combined MPG.

That's pretty awesome fuel economy for a huge car. Heck, that beats a lot of family sedans with 180 hp 4-bangers. I hope the next-generation S-class can match that mpg figure.

How much incentives has VW put on the hood of A8s in the past- on pace with mercedes' $13,000 s-class incentive?

Would also be interesting to see the fleet sales of the A8 - likely over 50% worldwide.

Not sure where the $13,000 comes from as the only manufacturer offered deal on an S-class is a $1,099 a month 30 month lease with $6,000 due at signing. According to KBB.com there are no incentives on the S400 Hybrid and a 2.49% financing offer on the S550. Truecar.com has the average S550 sale price at $87,491, BMW 750 at $75,833, and Audi A8 4.0 at $77,448. The S-class sells at a price premium over all competitors and still outsells them al despite being in it's 7th model year.

What excites me about the diesel A8 though, is a diesel A6 with maybe 1-2 mpg more will probably follow. And then Mercedes will look to up the fuel economy on the E350 Bluetec and S350 Bluetec. Then BMW follows, then Cadillac when the LTS comes out knows they need over 400 lb-ft and 36 mpg. I like the competition and how these huge luxury sedans can get better mileage than a 4-cylinder Camry.

Click around on trucar; the s600 sticker is 163,805, but the average transaction price was 150,153, a difference of 13,652. S65 difference was $19K.

Even the S550 difference is 8,414... but these MSRP numbers do NOT include OPTIONS, so all those figures are going to jack up much higher. Face it, mercedes dealers are forced to heavily discount the s-class to keep them moving.

Even so, its harder to lose more cash on a new car purchase than an s-class.

    Here's a 2011 S65, a car that's BASE MSRP was $211K and look:

    http://www.cargurus.com/Cars/l-Used-2010-Mercedes-Benz-S-Class-S65-AMG-t37138#listing=48046700

Price marked down from 145K to 134K to 126K. 1+ year old and it can cost the owner EIGHTY-FIVE THOUSAND DOLLARS.

You'd have to be a financial idiot to buy one.

An article you might find interesting: http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2013-01-02/audi-defies-demand-drop-as-companies-give-workers-wheels-cars.html

The vast majority of luxury cars sold in Germany, Audi's second largest market, are company cars. Most private citizens can't afford a $100K car after VAT. In China, Audi's largest market, about a third of Audis go into government fleets.

    >>"When including dealers and rental-car companies, businesses in Germany accounted for as much as 64 percent of sales in November, according to KBA."<<

Still, 64% overall average fleet sales is pathetic- it's propping up their domestic makes.

Although how many cars did Cadillac, Lincoln, Infiniti, Acura, and Lexus sell in Germany last year? Or in Europe all together? The German luxury makes may have fleet sales, but at least they have sales.

You just need to remember when you reel off those all-inclusive global sales numbers, that U.S. aside, the majority of those numbers is very likely fleet sales- the very bane of a luxury reputation.

good mpg on that audi diesel but if you are buying or leasing that expensive a car, you are not really getting diesel for the money you'd supposedly save on fuel. there is likely a good niche market for luxury diesels for those who just dig diesels.

It's not just fuel savings but less depreciation as well. The E and ML Bluetecs have a higher residual than the gas equivalents, so despite a higher MSRP, they have lower lease payments.

It is a good time if you happen to be interested in off-road pickups. The Ford F-150 Raptor, Ram Power Wagon, and Toyota's TRD Pro lineup offer their unique take. Soon, the 2018 Chevrolet Colorado ZR2 will have its own take for your consideration.
Today, Chevrolet revealed the base price of the Colorado ZR2 which begins at $40,995 (includes a $940 destination charge). That will net you the extended cab model with the 3.6L V6. Chevrolet isn't talking pricing for the crew cab or the option of the 2.8L Duramax Turbodiesel. This price undercuts the base Toyota Tacoma TRD Pro by $705.
The list of standard equipment is quite extensive with front and rear locking electronic diffs, DSSV dampers, a 2-inch suspension lift, new bumpers, spray-in bedliner, 31-inch Goodyear Wrangler Duratrac tires, aluminum skid plate, six-speaker audio system, 8-inch touchscreen with Chevrolet MyLink, and wireless phone charging.

Volkswagen is making progress with moving on from the diesel emission scandal as they have announced a proposed agreement for the 3.0L TDI V6. Filed in federal court last night, the agreement totals $1.2 billion and hopes to resolve civil claims for 78,000 vehicles. The settlement includes,
Buy back or terminate the lease of approximately 20,000 eligible 2009-2012 Volkswagen Touareg and Audi Q7 TDI models (dubbed the Generation 1 models). There is also the possibility of Volkswagen offering owners of these models a fix if approved by the U.S. Government. Repair the approximately 58,000 Generation 2 models (2013-2016 Volkswagen Touareg, Porsche Cayenne, and Audi Q7; 2014-2016 Audi A6, A7, A8, Q5, and Q7). Offer compensation payments as much as $16,114 for all owners of 3.0L TDI V6 models The agreement needs the approval of a federal judge. A hearing on this will take place a couple weeks from now.
“With the Court-approved 2.0L TDI program well under way and now this proposed 3.0L TDI program, all of our customers with affected vehicles in the United States will have a resolution available to them. We will continue to work to earn back the trust of all our stakeholders and thank our customers and dealers for their continued patience as this process moves forward,” said Hinrich J. Woebcken, President and CEO of Volkswagen Group of America, Inc in a statement.

VOLKSWAGEN REACHES SETTLEMENT AGREEMENTS WITH PRIVATE PLAINTIFFS AND U.S. FEDERAL TRADE COMMISSION ON 3.0L TDI V6 VEHICLES IN THE UNITED STATES
Program, if approved, would include provisions to recall and repair most affected vehicles. Options for older affected vehicles include buybacks or trade-in credits, or lease termination. All eligible owners and lessees of affected vehicles will receive cash payments. Herndon, VA (February 1, 2017) – Volkswagen AG and Volkswagen Group of America, Inc. (together, Volkswagen) announced today that they have reached proposed agreements to resolve outstanding civil claims regarding approximately 78,000 affected 3.0L TDI V6 diesel engine vehicles in the United States.
Two agreements have been submitted to the Court for approval: (1) a proposed class settlement with private plaintiffs represented by a Court-appointed Plaintiffs’ Steering Committee (PSC) on behalf of a nationwide class of current and certain former owners and lessees of eligible 3.0L TDI V6 vehicles; and (2) a proposed Consent Order submitted by the U.S. Federal Trade Commission (FTC).
Woebcken, President and CEO of Volkswagen Group of America, Inc.
      Proposed 3.0L TDI Settlement Program
Under the 3.0L TDI settlement program, Volkswagen has agreed, among other terms, to provide cash payments to all eligible members of the class, and take the following specific actions:
Recall and repair, free of charge to the customer, approximately 58,000 affected 2013-2016 Model Year Volkswagen, Audi and Porsche 3.0L TDI V6 vehicles (so-called Generation 2 vehicles) to bring them into compliance with the emissions standards to which they were originally certified, if an appropriate Emissions Compliant Repair is approved by U.S. regulators. Buy back or offer trade-in credit of equal value for, or terminate the leases of, approximately 20,000 eligible 2009-2012 Model Year Volkswagen and Audi 3.0L TDI V6 vehicles (so-called Generation 1 vehicles) or, if approved by U.S. regulators, modify the vehicles to substantially reduce their nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions so as to allow eligible owners and lessees to keep them. Volkswagen has agreed to pay up to approximately $1.2 billion in benefits for the 3.0L TDI settlement program, assuming 100% participation in the program, a 100% buyback of all eligible Generation 1 vehicles and availability of an Emissions Compliant Repair for Generation 2 vehicles. Volkswagen expects to be able to bring affected Generation 2 vehicles to the same emissions standards to which the vehicles were originally certified.
Volkswagen will begin the 3.0L TDI settlement program as soon as the Court grants final approval to the settlement agreements. At the earliest, approval will occur in May 2017.
Potential claimants under the class settlement do not need to take any action at this time. Individual class members will receive extensive notification of their rights and options (including the option to “opt out” of the settlement agreement) if the Court grants preliminary approval of the proposed class settlement at a hearing scheduled to take place on February 14, 2017. More information about the proposed 3.0L TDI settlement program can be found at www.VWCourtSettlement.com.
      Notes to Editors
The proposed settlement applies to all 3.0L TDI V6 diesel engine vehicles that Volkswagen, Audi, or Porsche marketed or sold in the United States for Model Years 2009 through 2016. The vehicles are divided into two generations, as follows:
      Generation 1 Vehicles
      Volkswagen Touareg: 2009-2012 Audi Q7: 2009-2012 Generation 2 Vehicles
      Volkswagen Touareg: 2013-2016 Audi Q7: 2013-2015 Audi A6, A7, A8, A8L, Q5: 2014-2016 Porsche Cayenne Diesel: 2013-2016
