BMW To Begin Production of 2017 Diesel Vehicles

Arriving soon at your nearest BMW dealer: the 2017 diesel lineup

BMW has been in a holding pattern in terms of producing diesel vehicles for the U.S. as they were awaiting approval from the EPA retesting diesel vehicles. Soon, 2017 model year diesel vehicles will be rolling off BMW's assembly lines and heading off to the U.S.

"Diesel models will be going into production shortly at our manufacturing plants," said Rebecca K. Kiehne, product & technology spokesperson at BMW of North America to Green Car Reports.

As we reported back in October, the EPA was holding back the certifications on a number of diesel vehicles as they subjecting them to new tests to uncover possible cheating - thanks Volkswagen. In our report, BMW said they would not start production of the 3-Series and X3 diesel models until the end of the year. Production of the X5 diesel would begin in January.

The production restart of BMW's diesels comes at an interesting time. The EPA is currently investigating the 3.0L EcoDiesel used in the Jeep Grand Cherokee and Ram 1500 for possible violations of the clean air act. Over at Volkswagen, the board has given the ok for the $4.3 billion settlement with the Department of Justice over the diesel emission scandal.

I think all auto companies are rethinking their Diesel strategy and I believe this could be the last go around by those that do get their EPA certification.

Was looking at Def and shocked that MB on their Diesels charge $317 to refill the DEF tank which is needed to be filled twice a year based on 12,000 miles driven. Costs are much higher than they used to be for driving Diesel and I do not see the MPG off setting that cost much. I think Hybrid and EV's will clearly replace the so called benefit of having a Diesel car or SUV.

I really only see value in having a Diesel in the trucks or FULL SIze SUV's like a suburban. The torque could be well used there. Course EV's once Batteries get better will replace that too.

    • You have the Ford CEO stating how superior their software and driving dynamics are compared to their own EVs. Clearly the rest of the world is happy with driving them even if China is spying on them via the auto. Hard to deny he feelings / thoughts on the Chinese EV. • Yes, VW EVs do not have a well-regulated battery pack. I feel they rushed it and did not do the R&D to test the build a proper battery pack that would have minimal degradation.
    • I could justify it for under 30k. I'm sure it's still a "good" vehicle, just nothing worthy of full MSRP in the 60-70k range. But, even at 29k, I still wouldn't be too thrilled about 230 miles of range, because in the winter it'll be nearly cut in half.
    • There is one thing that Im most worried about.  A desperate, down on his luck, meth addict will resort to violence when his cash is low. The usa is this eventual desperate, down on his luck, meth addict.  Already, the usa has threatened Canada's sovereignty a year ago before when the usa still had strong economic power. That economic power is fading away real fast.   1. trump relied on his 51st state rhetoric again and called Carney governor when he and his idiot cabinet realized the big words Carney used against the usa at Davos. Blames the China deal though as to disguise the fact that when Carney was speaking, he and his posse did not understand one spoken word.  2. Scott Bessent, born in south carolina, goes to show you HIS intelligence level regardless if he is a Yale grad, also flaps his lips in bravado...a full phoquing week  past by when he realized what that speech from Carney meant.  Still though...words of full of fight from Bessent to Canada though.   3. Pete Hoekstra talks tough of sending the us airforce into Canada if Canada does not follow through with the F35 purchases. 4. trump verbally attacking not only Greenland's sovereignty, but Denmark's and even Europe as a whole... 5. trump kidnaps Venezuelan's leader along with his wife stealing or trying to steal Venezuela's oil.  Bet you though that trump's friends are reaping from that operation... 6. innocent americans are losing their life murdered by trump's gestapo army called ice.   And all that when the usa is not suffering yet. When it comes to that, the usa is still a powerful military force, what WILL this administration do?     This situation is very alarming more so than the Cuban missile crisis.   And that is why news leaked out that Canada is preparing for a usa invasion and how Canada is to deal with it...
