BMW unveiled the Concept iX3 at the Beijing Motor show in April of 2018. The overall look of the crossover is somewhat conventional, but with the traditional kidney grille being closed off for aerodynamic reasons and special aerodynamic wheels.
The production iX3 will be rear-wheel drive only and have a peak rating of 286 horsepower and 295 lb-ft of torque. All of that power comes from a single motor. The motor is BMW's fifth-generation eDrive powertrain developed solely in house. BMW says that the technology used in this motor is scalable and thus can be used in different automotive segments.
The battery is a 74-kWh pack that is capable of powering the iX3 for 273 miles on the European WLTP cycle (EPA rating will be lower).
The iX3 will be built in Shenyang, China through a joint venture BMW Brilliance Automotive starting in 2020.
Once the iX3 goes on the market, it will be BMW's first vehicle to be available in gasoline, diesel, plug-in hybrid, and pure electric drive configurations.
In 2018, when BMW launched it's 7.0 operating system for its in-car infotainment, it included Apple Car Play for free for the first 12 months. After that, the owner was asked to pay $80 for a 1 year subscription to Car Play or $300 for a 240 month subscription. This caused a stir among BMW owners because Apple Car Play is included at no charge in nearly every other brand out there and because Apple doesn't charge manufacturers to use Apple CarPlay in their models. Models as basic as the Chevrolet Sonic have CarPlay as standard and without any subscription fees.
Now BMW has confirmed it is backing away from the subscription model in order to keep customers happy. All compatible 2019 and 2020 vehicles sold will be offered a free unlimited subscription once the initial 12 months are up. Older models that have CarPlay such as the i3, i8, 4-series, and older 2-series will have to pay for a lifetime subscription.
For now, Android users are still stuck without a solution as BMW does not support Android Auto in its vehicles yet.
BMW has taken the wraps off the 2020 BMW 2-series Gran Coupe. It will come in two flavors, a 228 hp 228i Drive and a 301hp M235i xDrive.
The 228i is powered by BMW's "B" modular engine family. It produces 228 horsepower from 5,000 rpm - 6,000 rpm and 258 lb-ft of torque from 1,450 rpm to 4,500 rpm. The M235i increase that to 301 horsepower from 5,000 rpm - 6,250 rpm and 332 lb-ft of torque from 1,750 rpm - 4,500 rpm. The 235's engine gets larger diameter main bearings, new pistons connecting rods, a larger turbocharger, and a larger capacity cooling system. all of that gets you to 60 in 4.7 seconds, a 1.3 second improvement over the 6.0 seconds the base engine gets you. Power is routed to all wheels via an 8-speed automatic transmission. Top speed for the 228 is an electronically limited 130 mph while the M235 can get to 155 when equipped with performance tires.
Unlike the 2-series coupe, the Gran Coupe rides on a front-wheel drive platform shared with the X1, X2, and Mini Clubman and Countryman.
The xDrive system has an ARB (Actuator-Related Wheel Slip Limiter) and can split torque up to 50:50 front:rear. On the M235i, the xDrive also includes a front limited slip differential.
The standard Active Driving Assistant includes safety features like Frontal Collision Warning with City Collision Mitigation Function and Active Blind Spot Detection, and Daytime Pedestrian Protection. Also included is the Lane Departure Warning system with active lane return, which operates from 43 – 150mph. The standard Lane Change Warning system, which prompts the driver to guide the car back onto the correct lane at speeds above 12 mph by means of a visual warning and, if necessary, a steering input. The Active Driving Assistant’s other functions include rear collision preparation and cross traffic warning, which reduces the risk of a collision when reversing into roads or paths obstructed from the driver’s view.
Production of the 2-series Gran Coupe begins in November.
At the end of July we told you that BMW was planning a slew of model cuts in an effort to save some cash. The first of those cuts has just arrived, for 2020, there will be no 3-Series GT, 6-Series GT, or 6-Series Gran Coupe. This announcement effectively kills the 6-series lineup entirely which the 8-series has taken over for. The GT versions of the 3 and 6-Series never caught on and visually looked ungainly.
That enough would be perfectly good enough reason for canceling the cars, but the real reason has to do with the markets massive shift towards SUVs. Already the X3 is outselling the entire 3-series lineup on a regular basis, so keeping such a low volume variant around is probably not in the best interest of a company wishing to cut costs. We'll update you as we find out about more cuts to the BMW line.
Cutting models from lineups seems to be the order of the day lately. Automakers like Nissan, General Motors, and Mercedes Benz, are in the process of hatcheting the heck out their lineups. Now comes the news from BMW.
BMW has been struggling to make money on vehicles less than €40,000, due to fears of another global recession, a marked slowdown in the automotive sector, and Trump inspired trade wars, BMW is looking to cull options and models from their lineup. Gone will be many convertible variants, including the next Z4, the 2-series, 8-series (coupe and convertible). Also pushing up the daisies will be the 7-series standard wheelbase (Not offered in the US), the 1-series 3-door, the 2-series Gran Tourer, and 3-series GT. Even the BMW X2 could get the scythe. On the electric front, the i3 and i8 will be phased out due to their use of expensive carbon fiber, in place they will get much more conventional EV replacements, including a fully electric X3.
As far as Mini goes, Mini's future development is being handled by Great Wall Motors for the Mini three-door and 5-door. The Countryman is based on the X1. Mini's future is shaky as the brand continues to fail to bring up its sales numbers. It also has a great number of variants for a small brand, so expect to see some of those reduced.
It seems no brand is safe from the global automotive pull back.
BMW unveiled their BMW Vision M Next Concept in Munich today. This concept displays the prototype of BMW's future driving assistance technologies named "EASE" and "BOOST". EASE allows the car to take over the task of driving and allowing the driver to relaxing in a comfortable living space. Relaxing, talking, in-car entertainment, or other things focused away from driving are possible here. BOOST offers the driver the ultimate driving experience.
The interior is driver oriented even if the driver is not driving. The design keeps the driver focused on the right content at the right time.
Much of the Vision M Next Concept is a homage to the current BMW i8 PHEV. The exterior is pure sports car. Power comes from a PHEV drive with a total output of 600 horsepower and a top speed of 186 MPH. Zero to 62 MPH is said to take just 3.0 seconds. There is also a BOOST+ mode that grants extra power at the push of a button. All electric mode is good for up to 62 miles of range allowing for most commutes to be made purely on electricity alone...assuming you don't use the BOOST+ button too often.
The concept isn't expected to go into production, but could indicate the path that BMW takes for both the i8 and fully autonomous driving. Parts of the structure use recycled carbon fiber reinforced plastic, similar to bits of the 7-series and the platform can be used for EV, PHEV, and internal combustion engines. BMW plans on releasing 25 electrified models over the next few years with all of them on the scene by 2023.
BMW is studying ways to give its performance M-Division special models not based on any current or former BMW. BMW has already apparently decided which class of car the models will be in, but will not reveal details on it just yet. Multiple concepts are being studied.
The comments came from Markus Flasch, BMW's head of in-house tuning. Further up for debate is whether the models would be internal combustion or electric or a blend of both. Whichever form they take, the M cars would "fit our character.... a combination of precision, agility, and luxury", though they would not necessarily be positioned above the M8.
Having standalone models would help BMW's M-Division better compete with Mercedes-Benz AMG
BMW is committing to keeping their V12 in production until at least 2023 according to BMW Powertrain Executive Michael Bayer, and he thinks it will be possible to make the engine compliant with the next round of Euro emissions regulations. That means it will stick around for the rest of the current generation of the 7-series sedan. Unfortunately, there will still not be a V12 offered in the 8-series coupe.
We've already reported that Mercedes plans to cut its V12 out of the S-Class sedan after the 2020 model year. By doing so, it will make BMW the standard bearer for the final V12s in regular production. Audi already canceled its W12 engine starting with the 2017 model year though it is still in use in the Bentley Flying Spur.
One possible reason for BMW keeping the V12 around is its use in Rolls Royce vehicles until they make the big leap to full electrification.
BMW is planning on a new EV on a platform shared with Daimler according to reports. The new car, called the i2, would be about the same size as the current BMW i3, but without the expensive carbon fiber body.
The i2, aimed for a 2024 launch, would have a starting price less than 30,000€ ($34,000). BMW wants to have a 300km (186 mile) range. BMW recently revised the i3 to have a larger battery. The revised battery is 42.2 kWh and gives the i3 a range of 153 miles.
Sales of the combined models from both BMW and Daimler would be targeted around 500,000 annually.
BMW has issued a profit warning for 2019, saying that profits will be well below last year's 7.2€ billion. The company stated that higher raw material costs, unfavorable currency exchange, and compliance with stricter emissions standards are the main causes for the profit erosion.
BMW is not planning for layoffs at this time, but those could come in the future as the company moves to simplify and consolidate its product portfolio. One area that will see cuts is in powertrains. BMW plans to cut the number of engine/transmission options in half and simplify platforms in a move to streamline operations. BMW plans to reduce the development time of new vehicles by one third through its PERFORMANCE > NEXT program. Part of the expected expense will be from the move to electrification.

Munich, Germany- March 20, 2019...On its way towards the mobility of the future, the BMW Group is taking strategic steps to enhance its operating performance on a sustainable basis. As well as systematically implementing its strategy NUMBER ONE > NEXT, the company is also focusing on faster processes, leaner structures and therefore greater efficiency. In view of the many challenges currently facing the automotive sector, the BMW Group is ensuring it maintains its financial strength to influence and decisively shape individual premium mobility moving into the next decade, just as it has over the past ten years.
"After three years of Strategy NUMBER ONE > NEXT, we remain firmly on course, having established a strong position as one of the world's top providers of e-mobility. We lead the European market and will soon go into series production of our fifth generation of electric drivetrain systems. We’re significantly expanding our presence in the upper luxury class. Our first highly automated vehicle will become available in 2021 and we are already now paving the way for the development of the next generation of groundbreaking technology. In the field of mobility services, we are joining forces with Daimler AG to create even greater momentum," said Harald Krüger, Chairman of the Board of Management of BMW AG, in Munich on Wednesday. "We need to work systematically on our operational excellence in order to leverage these strategic advances and ensure our ability to use our own underlying strength to help shape the sector’s transformation going forward," he added.
To compensate for the increasing volume of upfront expenditure needed to drive the mobility of the future, the BMW Group is enhancing its business performance by comprehensively rolling out an array of new models. In the upper luxury class, for instance, the new BMW 8 Series (both the Coupé and the Convertible) and the new BMW X7 have already made their debut. The fully revamped BMW 7 Series is on its way to dealerships and will be flanked by the launch of the BMW 8 Series Gran Coupé in the further course of this year. The Group's next step will be to significantly rejuvenate and expand its range in the compact class. With this aim in mind, the next generation BMW 1 Series will be launched in autumn 2019 and the BMW 2 Series Gran Coupé, a new and highly emotive model, will be added to the compact segment in spring 2020 with a view to attracting new customers.
High potential for boosting efficiency with Performance > NEXT
Since 2017, the BMW Group has also worked systematically with Performance > NEXT to improve structural efficiency along the entire value chain. In this respect, numerous decisions have either been taken or are already being implemented. In view of the growing challenges and demands on resources, the Group intends to expand and intensify these efforts. By the end of 2022, it expects to leverage potential efficiencies totalling more than 12 billion euros. Many of the measures aimed at reducing product complexity will then come to full fruition in the following years.
"Our industry is witnessing rapid transformation. In this environment, a sustained high level of profitability is crucial if we are to continue driving change," said Nicolas Peter, Member of the Board of Management of BMW AG, Finance. "In view of the numerous additional factors negatively impacting earnings, we began to introduce countermeasures at an early stage and have taken a number of far-reaching decisions. Discipline and a clear focus on rigorous implementation are essential as we aim to emerge from these challenging times stronger than ever."
Performance > NEXT will also benefit from the fact that processes can be significantly accelerated by the new opportunities digitalisation offers. For instance, development times for new vehicle models will be reduced by as much as one third. Among other savings, digital simulations and virtual validation could eliminate the need for some 2,500 expensive prototype vehicles by the year 2024.
The BMW Group continues to recruit skilled workers and IT specialists on a selective basis to engage in forward-looking projects such as digitalisation, autonomous driving and electric mobility. Nevertheless, the target for 2019 is to keep the workforce at the previous year's level. Compared to earlier years, the scale of natural attrition in the workforce has been exacerbated by demographic factors (including the baby boomer phenomenon), a situation which means the BMW Group can focus even more intensively on issues that will shape the future and increase efficiency. In addition, with effect from 1 April 2019 the BMW, MINI and Rolls-Royce automotive brands will be combined within a single sales division, clearly signalling a move towards even leaner processes and more efficient structures throughout the company.
On the product side, from 2021 onwards, up to 50 per cent of today's drivetrain variants will be eliminated in the transition to more sophisticated and flexible vehicle architectures. This approach will also enable the BMW Group to focus on the products most in demand. At model level, no successor will be developed for the current generation of the BMW 3 Series Gran Turismo. Moreover, the model portfolio is regularly assessed with a view to identifying additional potential to reduce complexity. Synergy and efficiency opportunities in indirect purchasing as well as in materials and production costs are also being leveraged.
Upfront expenditure set to remain high
The BMW Group intends to implement the measures outlined above to offset the ongoing high level of upfront expenditure required to embrace the mobility of the future. Substantial volumes of future-oriented expenditure are again planned for 2019.
At € 5,029 million, capital expenditure in 2018 was 7.3% above the previous year’s high level (€ 4,688 million). The Capex ratio rose to 5.2% (2017: 4.8%). Investments included work connected with the introduction of new models in the Spartanburg, Dingolfing and Munich plants and the building of the Group’s plant in Mexico. As planned, research and development expenses in 2018 were significantly higher than in the previous year and totalled € 6,890 million (2017: € 6,108 million; +12.8%). R&D expenditure for the year was therefore equivalent to 7.1% of Group revenues (2017: 6.2%). In addition to ramping up the roll-out of new models, the focus is also on future-oriented topics such as autonomous driving and the systematic expansion of electric mobility.
Pioneer systematically expands e-mobility product range
With more than 350,000 units (over 130,000 fully electric vehicles and more than 220,000 plug-in hybrids) delivered to customers up to the end of 2018, the BMW Group is already a leading supplier of electrified vehicles and expects to have more than half a million units on the roads by the end of the year. At the beginning of March, the new plug-in hybrid versions of the BMW 3 Series, BMW 7 Series, BMW X5 and BMW X3, which now come with extended electric range, were showcased at the Geneva Motor Show. By the end of next year, the BMW Group will have more than ten new or revised models equipped with fourth-generation electric drivetrain technology ("Gen 4") on the roads.
By the end of 2019, these will include the all-electric MINI Electric manufactured at the Oxford plant and, from 2020, the BMW iX3, which will be produced for the world market in Shenyang, China. Together with the pioneering BMW i3, the BMW i4 and the BMW iNEXT, the Group will have five all-electric models on the market by 2021 and the number is scheduled to rise to at least twelve models by 2025. Including the rapidly growing range of plug-in hybrids, the BMW Group’s product portfolio will then comprise at least 25 electrified models.
This wide range of electrified models on offer will be made possible by highly flexible vehicle architectures and an equally agile global production system. Going forward, the BMW Group will be capable of manufacturing models with all-electric (BEV), hybrid-electric (PHEV) and conventional (ICE) drivetrains on one production line. The ability to integrate e-mobility in its production network will enable the BMW Group to respond even more flexibly as demand grows.
The BMW Group is currently developing the fifth generation of its electric drivetrain, in which the interplay of electric motor, transmission, power electronics and battery will be further optimised. Integrating the electric motor, the transmission and power electronics also plays a role in cutting costs. Furthermore, the electric motor does not require rare earths, enabling the BMW Group to reduce its dependence on their availability. The fifth generation of the Group's electric drivetrain technology will be installed for the first time in the BMW iX3 from 2020.
Cooperation for next generation of autonomous driving
The BMW Group believes long-term partnerships within a flexible, scalable, non-exclusive platform are key to advancing the industrialisation of autonomous driving. As early as 2016, the BMW Group established a non-exclusive platform with technology specialists, suppliers and OEMs to take the technology to series maturity and has now successfully consolidated work in this area at the Autonomous Driving Campus in Unterschleißheim, near Munich. The generation of technologies currently under development will go into series production as Level 3 automation in the BMW iNEXT in 2021, this vehicle will also be Level 4-enabled for pilot projects.
The BMW Group has joined forces with Daimler AG to advance the development of the next generation of technologies needed for autonomous driving. At the end of February, the two companies signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to jointly develop the technologies that are vital for future mobility. Initially, the focus will be on advancing the development of next-generation technologies for driver assistance systems, automated driving on highways and parking features (in each case up to SAE Level 4).
The BMW Group and Daimler AG view their partnership as a long-term, strategic cooperation and aim to make next-level technologies widely available by the middle of the coming decade. Combining the outstanding expertise of the two companies will boost their joint innovative strength. Moreover, it will both accelerate and streamline the development of future technology generations. The development of current-generation technologies and the ongoing collaborations both companies have in this field will remain unaffected and continue as planned. Both parties will also explore additional partnerships with other technology companies and automotive manufacturers that could contribute to the success of the platform.
Major investments in joint venture for mobility services
The BMW Group and Daimler AG are also working together in the field of mobility services, creating a new global player that provides sustainable urban mobility for its customers. The two companies are investing more than one billion euros to develop and more closely intermesh their offerings for car-sharing, ride-hailing, parking, charging and multimodal transport. The cooperation comprises five joint ventures: REACH NOW (multimodal), CHARGE NOW (charging), FREE NOW (ride-hailing), PARK NOW (parking) and SHARE NOW (car-sharing).
The common vision is clear: the five services will increasingly merge to form a single mobility service portfolio with an all-electric, self-driving fleet of vehicles that charge and park autonomously and also interconnect with other modes of transport. This service portfolio will be a key cornerstone in the BMW Group’s strategy as a mobility provider going forward. The cooperation represents the ideal approach for maximising opportunities in a growing market, while jointly shouldering the unavoidable cost of investment.
Challenging conditions in the financial year 2018
In terms of its core business, the BMW Group had always expected 2018 to be a challenging year. Compared with 2017, alongside additional upfront expenditure for the mobility of the future, a high three-digit million euro negative impact from exchange-rate and raw materials price developments had been factored into expected earnings for the year. As announced on 25 September 2018, several additional factors dampened business performance in the third quarter. Unlike many of our competitors, the BMW Group implemented the requirements of the WLTP regulations early. The industry-wide shift to the new WLTP test cycle resulted in considerable supply distortions in Europe and unexpectedly intense competition, given that numerous competitor models which had not yet gained WLTP certification were registered before the 1 September deadline. Within the framework of its flexible production and sales strategy, the BMW Group responded to the situation by reducing its volume planning to focus on earnings quality. At the same time, increased statutory and non-statutory warranty measures resulted in significantly higher additions to provisions in the Automotive segment. Ongoing international trade conflicts also served to exacerbate the market situation and feed uncertainty. These circumstances resulted in greater-than-expected distortions in demand and unexpected pressure on pricing in several markets.
Nevertheless, deliveries of the BMW Group’s three premium automotive brands (BMW, MINI and Rolls-Royce) grew by 1.1% to a new record figure of 2,490,664 units in 2018 (2017: 2,463,526 units). At € 97,480 million, Group revenues were at the previous year’s level (2017: € 98,282 million: -0.8%). Adjusted for currency factors, they increased by 1.2%. Due to the various adverse aspects arising in the third quarter, combined with high levels of upfront expenditure for research and development, profit before financial result was € 9,121 million (2017: € 9,899 million; -7.9%). At € 9,815 million, Group profit before tax in 2018 was moderately down on the previous year, but nevertheless the second-best result ever recorded in the company's history (2017: € 10,675 million; -8.1%). At 10.1% (2017: 10.9%), the return on sales before tax (EBT margin) exceeded the target value of ten percent.
Group net profit amounted to € 7,207 million (2017: € 8,675 million; -16.9%). In the previous year, net profit was exceptionally high due to valuation effects of around € 1 billion arising in connection with the US tax reform. Despite very challenging conditions, the Automotive segment generated free cash flow of € 2,713 million in 2018 (2017: € 4,459 million).
Based on the annual financial statement, the Board of Management and the Supervisory Board will propose payment of a dividend of € 3.50 per share of common stock and € 3.52 per share of preferred stock at the Annual General Meeting on 16 May 2019. This is the second highest payout in the company's history. The total dividend payment will amount to € 2.3 billion, or 32.0% of net profit (previous year: 30.3%3).
Automotive segment exposed to volatile business conditions
At € 85,846 million, Automotive segment revenues were at a similar level to the previous year (2017: € 85,742 million; +0.1%). Influenced by the factors referred to above and combined with high levels of upfront expenditure for research and development, EBIT was € 6,182 million (2017: € 7,888 million; -21.6%). Due to various adverse factors, the EBIT margin came in at 7.2% (2017: 9.2%). Profit before tax amounted to € 6,977 million (2017: € 8,717 million; -20.0%).
A total of 2,125,026 BMW brand vehicles were delivered to customers worldwide (2017: 2,088,283 units; +1.8%). As well as the BMW 5 Series (382,753 units; +10.2%), the BMW X family in particular benefited from strong demand during 2018, with worldwide deliveries up significantly on the previous year to 792,605 units (+12.1%). The BMW X3 made an important contribution to this performance, with deliveries up by more than one third to 201,637 units (+37.7%).
Worldwide deliveries of MINI brand vehicles during the twelve-month period totalled 361,531 units (2017: 371,388 units; -2.8%). The MINI Countryman recorded double-digit growth with 99,750 units (+17.5%). Almost every seventh MINI Countryman was a plug-in hybrid (13.3%).
In 2018, Rolls-Royce Motor Cars achieved its best sales result in over 100 years of corporate history with 4,107 deliveries worldwide (2017: 3,362 units; +22.2%). The Rolls-Royce Phantom contributed substantially to this performance.
While deliveries of the BMW Group’s three automotive brands in Europe remained at the previous year's high level (1,098,523; -0.3%), the Americas (457,715 units; +1.5%) and Asia (876,614 units; +3.3%) regions recorded slight growth. In China, volumes grew significantly as local production of the new BMW X3 was ramped up in the second half of the year. A total of 640,803 BMW Group vehicles were delivered to customers in the course of 2018 (+7.7%).
Motorcycles segment revises model range
BMW Motorrad revised its 2018 product range on a massive scale, adding nine new models. Production adjustments necessary during the ramp-up phase had a negative impact on deliveries during the first half of the year. Over the full year, 165,566 BMW motorcycles and maxi-scooters were delivered to customers (2017: 164,153 units; +0.9%).
Revenues totalled € 2,173 million (2017: € 2,272 million; -4.4%). Profit before financial result came in at € 175 million (2017: € 207 million; -15.5%), corresponding to a segment EBIT margin of 8.1% (2017: 9.1%). Profit before tax amounted to € 169 million (2017: € 205 million; -17.6%).
Financial Services segment records contract portfolio growth
The Financial Services segment continued to perform well in 2018. In total, 1,908,640 new contracts were signed with retail customers in 2018 (2017: 1,828,604; +4.4%). The contract portfolio with retail customers comprised 5,708,032 contracts at 31 December 2018 (31 December 2017: 5,380,785 contracts; +6.1%). Segment revenues totalled € 28,165 million (2017: € 27,567 million; +2.2%). Profit before tax amounted to € 2,161 million (2017: € 2,207 million; -2.1%).
Slight increase in workforce
The BMW Group’s workforce comprised 134,682 employees at 31 December 2018, 3.7% more than at the end of 2017. The Group continues to recruit skilled staff and IT specialists in future-oriented areas such as digitalisation, autonomous driving and electric mobility.
Business development in 2019 influenced by challenging environment
The BMW Group sets itself ambitious targets, even in politically and economically turbulent times. With its young product portfolio, further rejuvenated by new models such as the BMW X7 and the seventh generation of the BMW 3 Series, the Group aims to remain the world’s leading manufacturer in the premium segment, underpinned by growth in all major sales regions. In view of the various model changes currently in progress, business is expected to develop more strongly in the second half of the year.
In 2019, the BMW Group will continue to invest substantial amounts in new technologies and the mobility of the future. However, costs are also being driven up in other areas, including the significantly higher cost of complying with stricter CO2 legislation. Against this background, rising manufacturing costs are likely to have a dampening effect on earnings. Moreover, unfavourable currency factors and higher raw materials prices are expected to have a medium to high three-digit million negative impact. At the same time, the ongoing issue of international trade conflicts remains a source of uncertainty.
Taking all these factors into consideration, the BMW Group is confident of its ability to achieve volume growth in the Automotive segment, where it is targeting a slight increase in the number of deliveries to customers in 2019. Within a stable business environment, an EBIT margin in the range of 8 to 10% remains the ambition for the BMW Group. However, its ability to influence underlying conditions is limited. Based on the prevailing conditions described above, an EBIT margin of 6 to 8% is forecast for the Automotive segment in 2019.
The Motorcycles segment is forecast to achieve a solid increase in deliveries to customers thanks to its rejuvenated model range. As in 2018, the EBIT margin is expected to be within the target range of 8 to 10%. For its Financial Services segment, the BMW Group forecasts a return on equity at the previous year's level, and therefore above the underlying target of 14%.
In addition to the various negative influences described above, the fact that some positive valuation effects recorded in 2018 will not be repeated in 2019 will result in a significant decline in the Group’s financial result. Group profit before tax is therefore also expected to be well below the previous year's level.
Forecasts for the current year are based on the assumption that worldwide economic and political conditions will not change significantly. Any deterioration in conditions could have a negative impact on the outlook.
The BMW Group will vigorously continue to implement measures necessary to promote growth, improved performance and efficiency, thereby creating the freedom to enable it to shape the future and secure its own competitiveness going forward. It will be a long wait till we see the final product, but BMW has released a teaser picture of their upcoming 2-Series Gran Coupe 4-door sedan due to be released at the LA Auto Show later this year. This car will compete with the Mercedes-Benz CLA and Audi A3 compact front wheel drive sedans. The BMW 2-series Gran Coupe will be running with front wheel drive as well. Under the hood expect a 2 liter turbo charged engine transversely mounted as in the BMW X2. In the X2, the motor produces 228 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque running through an 8-speed automatic. Don't expect a manual gearbox. All-wheel drive is a possibility and may even be standard in U.S. bound models.
Some performance variants will be available as well. The teaser picture reportedly shows the M Performance M235i which is rumored to have 300 hp and 265 lb-ft of torque.
We will likely have a wait until November to see the full product. Sales are expected to start in Spring of 2020.

Immediately noticeable is the gigantic new BMW kidney grille. In the rear are new, slimmer tail lamps connected by a narrow strip extending the width of the car.
Four engines will be offered in the 7-series. The top of the line is a 600 horsepower V12 capable of bringing the M760i xDrive to 60 mph in just 3.6 seconds. Also available will be a 745e plug-in hybrid with an inline 6-cylinder paired with an electric motor to provide a combined 389hp/442 lb-ft of torque and 4.9 second 0-60mph. The all-electric driving range will be released later. A 750i xDrive offers a 4.4 liter V8 with 523 hp, an increase of 80hp over the prior model, and 553 lb-ft of torque. The 740 is offered in both RWD and AWD editions with 335hp each. Peak torque in the I6 is 330 lb-ft from 1,500 - 5,200 rpm. Sending the power to the wheels is an updated 8-speed automatic transmission. The hybrid model gets a variant of the 8-speed with the electric motors integrated into the clutch packs. All-wheel drive is standard on all models except the base 740i and features a fully variable front-rear torque split as the situation demands. In normal, dry conditions, only the rear wheels are powered.

Turbocharged 6, 8 and 12 cylinder engines will be joined by a new 6-cylinder plug-in-hybrid variant when the new BMW 7 Series goes into production this March. Modern exterior design elements enhance the presence of the vehicle while the interior receives touches that upgrade the ambiance of luxury to new levels. The iDrive 7 system along with Mobileye interior camera and available Driving Assistant Professional bring BMW’s latest technology to the brand’s pinnacle luxury sedan.
The design. Increased presence, refined elegance.
Gracefully sporting proportions and alluring bodywork mark the exterior design of the new BMW 7 Series. The latest edition of the 7 Series features design updates that touch almost every area of the body, including the front bumper, hood, headlights, front fenders, rear bumper trim and rear lights to accentuate the elegance of the BMW 7 Series.
The 126.4 inch long wheelbase allows for a spacious 44.4 inches of rear leg room and an equally accommodating 41.1 inches of front legroom.
Taller front end and significantly larger BMW kidney grille.
The extensive design refresh at the front end plays the most prominent role in giving the new BMW 7 Series its more powerful visual presence. Catching the eye first is the significantly expanded surfacing at the front of the car, which is now two inches taller at its highest point.
The dominant feature of the front-end design is the BMW kidney grille, now framed by a single-piece surround whose surface area has grown larger by 40%. The Active Kidney Grille features adjustable vanes which only open when the need for cooling air is increased. The bars of the U.S. vehicles’ kidney grilles come standard in aluminum satin. The front of the air vanes between the kidney grille bars are High-gloss Chrome or black if the M Sport package is specified. The new BMW M760Li xDrive Sedan features a kidney grille surround and kidney grille bars finished in Cerium Grey.
Slim headlight units, BMW Laserlight available as an option.
The new design of the very slender headlight units provides an attractive visual contrast with the significantly enlarged BMW kidney grille, adding a new character to BMW’s luxury-class models. Standard equipment for the new BMW 7 Series includes Adaptive Full LED Lights with BMW Laserlight available as an option.
New hood contours, covered air intakes.
Among the striking design changes made to the front of the car is the re-designed hood. It extends up to the top of the higher BMW kidney grille and features more sculpted contour lines.
The lower front bumper air intakes are now overlaid with large air deflectors. These guide the oncoming air more efficiently to the brake air ducts and the Air Curtains, which help to minimize turbulence around the wheel openings. L-shaped trim strips border the Air Curtains.
Newly designed fenders with upright Air Breathers.
Muscular surfaces and precisely drawn character lines shape the profile view of the new BMW 7 Series. With a long wheelbase and short overhangs, a flowing roofline and the Hofmeister kink, the luxury sedan features recognizable hallmark BMW design cues.
Exterior mirrors, attached to the window surround trim by a thin stalk, strike a modern appearance and further improve aerodynamics. The front fenders have been redesigned to gracefully tie in the new headlight and front bumper.
The Air Breathers, visible behind the front wheel openings, now feature larger air outlets that extend much higher into the front fenders to help optimize the flow of air through the wheel openings to help reduce aerodynamic turbulence.
New rear-end design with full-width light strip.
The modern design cues flow into the rear of the new BMW 7 Series, providing a more horizontal effect to the rear trunk and bumper surfacing. The exhaust system’s tailpipes surrounds are now wider and are finished in either chrome on standard models or in Cerium Grey on M Sport models.
The LED, three-dimensional rear lights of the new BMW 7 Series are 1.4 inches slimmer than on the outgoing car and cut a sophisticated figure. A sharply defined and very slim light strip (only 0.2 inches wide) extends across the full width of the tailgate and connects the rear lights with each other. This light strip creates a discreetly illuminated accent when the daytime driving lights are switched on and teams up with the L-shaped taillights to generate a characteristic and highly distinctive night design at the rear of the new BMW 7 Series when darkness falls.
New paint finishes and light-alloy wheels.
The selection of exterior paint finishes available for the new BMW 7 Series sees new metallic and Individual options replacing several outgoing choices. New Bernina Grey Amber Effect metallic, Royal Burgundy Red metallic and Donington Grey metallic (the latter available exclusively in conjunction with the M Sport package) replace Singapore Grey metallic, Jatoba Brown metallic and Magellen Grey metallic. Carbon Black metallic, Black Sapphire metallic, Cashmere Silver metallic, Glacier Silver metallic, Imperial Blue metallic, Dark Graphite metallic, Mineral White metallic and Arctic Grey metallic round out the metallic paint selections. Customers can also choose from four selected BMW Individual paint options, including the new shades Dravit Grey metallic, Tanzanite Blue II metallic and Aventurin Red metallic which replace outgoing Ruby Black metallic, Moonstone Metallic and Almandine Brown metallic. Azurite Black metallic joins the new Individual paints as a carry-over. Of course BMW Individual allows a customer to choose any color they wish, beyond the standard choices, for their new vehicle.
The new BMW 740i, 740i xDrive and 745e xDrive Sedans come equipped with standard 18-inch light-alloy wheels and all-season run-flat tires, while the 750i xDrive features standard 19 inch wheels with all-season run-flat tires and the M760i xDrive sedan comes equipped with standard 20 inch wheels and performance run-flat tires. The 740i, 740i xDrive and 750i xDrive models additionally feature 19-inch wheel options with both all-season and performance run flat tires as well as 20-inch wheels with performance run flat tires. The new 745e xDrive sedan can be equipped with optional 19-inch wheels with either all-season or performance run-flat tires.
Interior and equipment. Luxurious ambience with inspirational style and exclusive technology.
Generous levels of space, carefully selected materials, harmoniously coordinated design details and exclusive workmanship combine to create a luxurious interior ambience in the new BMW 7 Series. Complementing the performance and refinement of the powertrain and chassis technology, these attributes ensure that the new BMW 7 Series offers both driver and passengers a luxurious on-board experience.
The new updated interior includes a screen grouping formed by the instrument cluster and the Control Display, the extended functionality of its controls and further improvement of the infotainment systems with iDrive 7. Trim strips, leather-covered surfaces and light sources make a greater contribution to the exclusive feeling of the new BMW 7 Series cabin. Improved acoustic comfort makes for a more relaxing travel experience.
Exclusive Nappa leather and BMW Individual Merino full leather trim with extended quilting and new interior trim strips.
The new BMW 740i, 740i xDrive and 745e xDrive Sedans come standard with Dakota leather upholstery, available in five different colors. A choice of six color variants is offered for the optional Nappa leather upholstery with extended appointments (standard on the 750i xDrive and BMW M760i xDrive). A new Nappa leather with extended quilting is now available in Mocha and Cognac color choices as part of the optional Luxury Seating Package. The extensive, three-dimensional surface quilting is found on the front and rear seat cushions and backrests, the armrests integrated in the door trim and the center console and gives the interior a further touch of luxury. In models equipped with the Executive Lounge or Executive Lounge rear console options, the high-quality quilting is also to be found on the rear center armrest.
The optional BMW Individual fine-grain Merino full leather trim – is available in six colors and features not only extended quilting but also contrast stitching and piping.
The interior trim for the new BMW 7 Series allows the styling to be further individualized to the owner’s taste. New to the range are exclusive fine wood versions in American Oak Dark with metal inlay and Poplar Grain Metallic Grey high-gloss. Both the trim and the instrument panel’s chrome surrounds that border them are made individually for each car to ensure that their dimensions match down to the millimeter. The new design features also extend to the trunk of the new BMW 7 Series, where a stainless steel insert in the loading sill makes a stylish quality statement. This feature is standard equipment on all model variants with the exception of the plug-in hybrids.
The M Sport package enhances the interior with a BMW Individual headliner in Anthracite, the M Sport leather steering wheel, M pedals and the M driver’s footrest, as well as illuminated M door sill plates and the Fineline Black fine wood interior trim strips with high-gloss metal effect. In the new BMW 7 Series, customers have the option of combining the M Sport package with a special version of Nappa leather upholstery with extended appointments. This option comprises black leather with a distinctive stitching pattern and M piping.
The BMW M760i xDrive also complements its outstanding performance pedigree with a bespoke interior design. In addition to the M leather steering wheel, the BMW Individual headliner in Anthracite, the M pedals, the M driver’s footrest and the comfort seats upholstered in Nappa leather with extended appointments, this 12-cylinder model is equipped with Fineline Black fine wood interior trim strips with high-gloss metal effect, a digitally generated model badge in the instrument cluster, an insert in the center console in Piano Finish Black and illuminated door sill plates bearing the inscription “V12”.
BMW EfficientLightweight and optimized aerodynamics.
The body structure developed for the BMW 7 Series combines maximized occupant protection with optimized weight. This is made possible by a material mix of high-strength steels, aluminum and carbon fiber-reinforced plastic (CFRP) that is unrivalled by any of its competitors. The Carbon Core used for the passenger cell makes a major contribution not only to the high level of safety, but also to the agile handling characteristics of the BMW 7 Series.
A significant role in the optimization of the vehicle’s aerodynamic characteristics is played by the active air flap control system along with Air Curtains and Air Breathers. Air drag is also reduced by the cladding covering almost the entire underbody.
Enhanced acoustic comfort for an exclusive motoring experience.
A series of refinements serve to enhance the acoustic comfort aboard the new BMW 7 Series. The level of tire noise reaching the rear compartment of the luxury sedans has been reduced by new shielding in the rear wheel arches. A further reduction in the interior noise level is attained through enhanced sound insulation elements in the B-pillar area, the seatbelt outlet covers and the rear seat backrest. Laminated glass with an increased thickness of 0.2 inches is now used not only for the windscreen, but also for the side windows and rear window too. This new construction for the side and rear windows is standard for the BMW 750i xDrive and BMW M760i xDrive models.
The improved sound insulation is a significant factor in the superior level of comfort provided by the new BMW 7 Series. The electric power windows of the luxury sedans feature new drive motors and control units which ensure precise power management, smooth movement and a consistent sound when the windows are lowered and raised.
Steering wheel, wireless charging tray for smartphones and Ambient Lighting.
A chrome fascia element and a modified layout of the multifunction buttons define the redesigned standard leather steering wheel in the new BMW 7 Series. The button array for the driver assistance systems on the left-hand spoke of the steering wheel has been reorganized. The button for activating the standard heating system for the steering wheel is now located below the steering wheel airbag housing.
The new BMW 7 Series models are equipped with standard wireless charging, now located in a more convenient position immediately in front of the cup holders.
The standard ambient lighting comprises LED lighting in the vicinity of the instrument panel, the upper door trim, the map pockets on the front seat backs, and in the foot wells. Using the iDrive 7 system menu, it is possible to choose from six colors to adjust the indirect illumination to personal preference. Courtesy lights, illuminated bars on the door sill plates and the Welcome Light Carpet in the entrance/exit area are also included with ambient lighting. An even more sophisticated impression is created by the Ambient highlight feature in the B-pillars, which combines with the optional sun blinds for the rear side windows and rear window to create a particularly atmospheric lighting effect in the rear of the new BMW 7 Series. When deactivated, the vertically arranged light sources now blend into the ambience of the luxury sedans even more harmoniously as a result of their high-quality smoked-glass look.
Passenger comfort in a class of its own: Rear Executive Lounge seating, Touch Command, Rear-seat entertainment.
Available as an optional package in the 750i xDrive and M760i xDrive, the Rear Executive Lounge Seating appointments maximize the luxury and passenger comfort of the rear compartment. In addition to four-zone automatic climate control, the two, individual electrically adjustable comfort seats with massage function, the equipment package also includes active seat ventilation for all seats and an Executive Lounge Rear Console with Rear-seat entertainment Experience including a BMW Touch Command tablet.
The Rear-seat entertainment system comprises two 10-inch full-HD displays complete with a Blu-ray player. The system allows users to access the entertainment, navigation and online functions of the vehicle from the rear seats. The viewing angle of the screens, which now have touchscreen functionality, can be adjusted in accordance with the rear seat passengers’ current seat position. Further improved hardware is the defining characteristic of the latest version of the BMW Touch Command unit. This removable tablet with a screen diagonal of seven inches can be used from any seat and even outside the vehicle. It lets the occupants operate comfort functions such as seat adjustment, interior lighting and climate control, as well as the infotainment, navigation and communication systems. It can also be used to play external audio and video files. The graphics and menu system of the BMW Touch Command tablet and the Rear-seat entertainment Experience displays are now aligned with the software features and functionality of BMW iDrive 7, which is also used for the all-digital displays of the instrument cluster and Control Display in the new BMW 7 Series to create an environment with a contemporary look and feel focused on the individual needs of the user.

The new BMW 7 Series takes the driving pleasure experience in a luxury sedan as seriously as it does the comfort of the passengers. The new BMW 7 Series is available with six, eight and twelve cylinder engines, as well as a plug-in hybrid drive system with a brand new design offering increased electric range, enhanced performance and lower consumption. The standard eight-speed Sport Steptronic transmission has undergone improvement, as has the BMW xDrive intelligent all-wheel-drive system.
All the engines fitted in the new BMW 7 Series share a number of common features: aluminum construction, optimized thermodynamics and the very latest BMW TwinPower Turbo technology. The technology package for the engines features twin-scroll turbochargers, High Precision Injection, VALVETRONIC fully variable valve timing and Double-VANOS variable camshaft control.
Prestige plus performance: V12 engine in the BMW M760i xDrive.
Spearheading the line-up of engines for the new BMW 7 Series is the twelve-cylinder motor that sets the benchmark for power delivery in the luxury segment. Traditionally the most prestigious engine variant, the V12 serves up a blend of unrivalled smoothness and tremendous performance. The engine powering the new BMW M760i xDrive has a displacement of 6.6 liters from which it extracts 600 hp between 5,500 and 6,500 rpm. The peak torque of 627 lb-ft is on tap over a wide rev range from 1,550 to 5,000 rpm. The high-performance engine propels the remarkably sporty luxury sedan from 0 to 60 mph in just 3.6 seconds. The top speed of the new BMW M760i xDrive is electronically limited to 155 mph.
Extreme rigidity, weight optimization and effective reduction of vibrations are the defining qualities of the V12’s basic design. The all-aluminum engine’s two banks of cylinders are positioned at an angle of 60 degrees. On the outside of each bank is a single, mono-scroll turbocharger with indirect charge air cooling and a separate cooling circuit. In order to reduce back pressure, the exhaust gases flow unimpeded through the twin-pipe exhaust system’s rear silencer whenever the exhaust flap is open. The rear silencer combines with exhaust flap control to give the engine a broad acoustic spectrum, ranging from creamy smooth to dramatically sporty.
The buttons of the Driving Experience Control switch can now be used to select an additional SPORT+ mode in the new BMW M760i xDrive that activates a track-geared vehicle set-up including linear throttle response, direct, sporty, undamped engine response and a particularly vocal soundtrack.
New V8 engine built for effortless sportiness.
One of the biggest changes in the engine range for the new BMW 7 Series is the eight-cylinder unit fitted in the BMW 750i xDrive Sedan. After undergoing an extensive overhaul covering everything from the crankcase through to the engine management, the 4.4-litre V8 generates a maximum output of 523 hp – 80 hp more than the engine it replaces – between 5,500 and 6,000 rpm. The 553 lb-ft of peak torque represents an increase of 74 lb-ft and is available from 1,800 – 4,600 rpm. The engine’s standout features include the pair of twin-scroll turbochargers nestled in the 90-degree angle between the two banks of cylinders.
The V8 unit lays on some expressive acoustic accompaniment for its instantaneous and ceaseless power build-up. The new BMW 750i xDrive sprints from 0 to 60 mph in 3.9 seconds
Straight-six gasoline engine with a thirst for revs.
The power unit fitted in the new BMW 740i and 740i xDrive boasts the free-revving ability inherent in all six-cylinder inline engines from BMW, plus wonderfully eager response. The 3.0-liter unit employs a twin-scroll turbocharger and direct petrol injection technology whose maximum pressure of 5,076 psi ensures the fuel is delivered in extremely precise doses. The straight-six generates its maximum output of 335 hp between 5,500 and 6,500 rpm, while the peak torque 330 lb-ft is waiting to be unleashed from 1,500 – 5,200 rpm.
The new BMW 740i completes the 0 to 60 mph sprint in just 5.3 seconds while the BMW 740i Xdrive’s extra traction allows it to accelerate to 60 mph in 4.8 seconds.
Plug-in hybrid drive system: now with six-cylinder in-line engine.
The plug-in hybrid variant in the new BMW 7 Series range takes all of the luxury sedan’s sporty prowess, passenger comfort and soothing ambience and combines them with exceptionally high efficiency and the ability to offer a virtually silent, all-electric driving experience with zero emissions. The integration of a six-cylinder in-line engine into the plug-in hybrid system, a more advanced high-voltage battery, more power and torque, plus improved figures for electric range, chart the progress that has been made compared with the outgoing model.
The plug-in hybrid model that will be available at the launch of the new BMW 7 Series in spring 2019 capture all of the luxury sedan’s essence even more effectively than before. Its newly developed drive technology consists of a specially adapted six-cylinder in-line engine from the current BMW EfficientDynamics family of power units – whose maximum output of 280 hp is delivered with characteristic smoothness and free-revving eagerness – an electric motor with a rated output of 113 hp and a rated torque of 195 lb-ft, and a new lithium-ion battery with the latest battery cell technology and increased capacity.
Enhancements have also been made to the power electronics, whose intelligent energy management ensures precisely orchestrated interaction between the two drive units and, if the proactive driving function is activated, efficiently coordinates the electric driving phases to coincide with sections of the journey that should be covered without any emissions. At the same time, the added performance from the electrical boost, which translates into even more response, is greater than before, as is the gain in efficiency produced by the assistance from the electric motor. With the Driving Experience Control switch set to SPORT mode, the drive duo can unleash a combined output of 389 hp, while the maximum combined torque for the plug-in hybrid variants in the new BMW 7 Series is up to 442 lb-ft.
The new plug-in hybrid drive technology enables the BMW 745e xDrive to record a 0-60 acceleration time of 4.9 seconds. The energy required for this is stored in a latest-generation lithium-ion battery located underneath the rear seats with an increased gross capacity of 12.0 kWh (10.4 kWh net). The all-electric driving range will be available closer to on-sale date.

A latest-generation eight-speed Sport Steptronic transmission assumes the task of relaying the engine’s power to either the rear wheels (740i) or to the BMW xDrive all-wheel-drive system found in all of the other new 7 Series models. When mated to the six and eight-cylinder engines, the transmission’s new control electronics and wider ratio spread help to further increase the drive system’s overall efficiency. Improvements have been made across the board in terms of driving, shifting and acoustic comfort, thanks to new torsion dampers that limit rotational forces in the powertrain while improved hydraulic control enables sportier gear shifts.
The BMW 745e xDrive is equipped with a hybrid-specific variant of the eight-speed Sport Steptronic transmission incorporating both the electric motor and an improved separating clutch that acts as the link to the engine. It’s extremely compact design means it is only around 0.6 inches longer than the transmissions in the non-hybrid models.
The Launch Control function of the standard Sport Steptronic transmission aids by optimizing traction during acceleration when this feature is used. Intelligent networking enables the eight-speed Sport Steptronic transmission’s controller to work with the navigation information when selecting the best shift strategy. As a result, unnecessary gear shifts are reduced when driving through a succession of bends and optimum use can be made of the engine braking effect when approaching a junction. The drive system’s networking with both the navigation system and the cameras and radar sensors likewise serves to maximize the efficiency-enhancing effect of the Auto Start Stop and coasting functions. In this way, inefficient engine shutdown when stopping only briefly is prevented, while the coasting function – which is now also available with the Driving Experience Control switch set to COMFORT mode on all models apart from the BMW M760i xDrive – is only activated if the route topography and traffic situation mean it won’t compromise either comfort or performance.
Fully variable, precise and efficient: BMW xDrive intelligent all-wheel drive.
The luxury sedan’s traction, agility and handling stability receives a boost with the addition of BMW xDrive. The intelligent all-wheel-drive system is networked with the Dynamic Stability Control (DSC) system and employs an electronically controlled multi-plate clutch to swiftly and precisely distribute the drive torque between the front and rear wheels in a fully variable ratio as the situation demands. This means the engine’s power can always be directed to the wheels with maximum traction for loss-free transfer to the road, even in extremely dynamic driving situations or in adverse road and weather conditions.
To increase the system’s efficiency, all of the drive torque is sent to the rear wheels in situations in which all-wheel drive is not needed. All-wheel drive comes standard all new BMW 7 series models except for the rear-wheel drive 740i.

An exceptional balance between supreme driving comfort and the exhilarating flair for which BMW is renowned are the defining features of the driving experience on board the new BMW 7 Series. The construction of the chassis, the suspension and damping systems, the steering and the braking system are designed to facilitate both relaxed cruising undisturbed by inconsistencies in the road surface and a sporty, active driving style. The driver can use the Driving Experience Control buttons to select a set-up option to suit the situation – and configure that set-up individually in part. The set-up options cover the car’s drive functions and the manner in which its chassis systems go about their work. This allows the potential of the chassis technology to be fully experienced. In ADAPTIVE mode, the overall set-up adapts automatically to the driving style and situation, responding to movements of the accelerator pedal and steering wheel, the position of the gear selector lever and data from the navigation system to instantly select the right set-up as the car moves from city driving to higher-speed roads, for example, or approaches a corner.
The design principle behind the double-wishbone front axle and five-link rear axle of the new 7 Series underpins its near-perfect balance between dynamic performance and comfort. The separation of wheel location and damping ensures the steering remains unaffected by disruptive forces from road surface imperfections. And high cornering speeds can be achieved without impacting negatively on ride comfort. The rear suspension uses its dual elastic bearings and tuned elastokinematics to ensure precise wheel location and excellent directional stability. The large rear axle sub-frame mounting provides an effective separation of the powertrain and suspension from the passenger cell, which benefits acoustic comfort.
All variants of the new BMW 7 Series feature standard adaptive suspension including electronically controlled dampers and two-axle air suspension with automatic self-levelling. Plus, the Driving Experience Control switch can be used to activate a range of damper settings to shift the emphasis of the driving experience further towards either comfort or sportiness. The suspension’s air supply is controlled individually for each wheel, making it possible to balance out an unevenly loaded car. Plus, the height of the body can be adjusted manually. For example, it can be raised by 0.8 inches at the touch of a button on bumpy road surfaces or steeply-angled driveways.
The spring/damper tuning in the new BMW 7 Series provides the basis for extremely dynamic handling properties combined with excellent ride comfort. Even greater control of body roll through keenly taken corners sharpens the sporting character of the luxury sedan. The set-up of the Electric Power Steering system has also been refined to improve both agility and handling precision.
Integral Active Steering increases comfort, agility and poise.
The optional Integral Active Steering demonstrates its strengths in a myriad of different driving situations. The system brings together the electromechanical steering of the front wheels – complete with Servotronic speed-sensitive steering assistance and variable steering ratio – with rear axle steering. The variable steering ratio allows BMW 7 Series drivers to execute low-speed maneuvers with only small steering inputs and without having to change their grip on the steering wheel. At higher speeds, the car’s responses to movements of the steering wheel are less pronounced, improving both directional stability when driving in a straight line and precision on the way into corners.
At low speeds, the rear wheels turn in the opposite direction to the front wheels, increasing the car’s maneuverability and significantly reducing its turning circle. By contrast, at higher speeds, the rear wheels follow the same direction as the front wheels, allowing the car to follow the course set by the driver even more quickly and accurately. Both in corners and when overtaking or changing lanes, Integral Active Steering imbues the luxury sedan with impressive poise and comfort.
Active Comfort Drive with Road Preview and active roll stabilization.
The optional Active Comfort Drive with Road Preview chassis system further hones the ride comfort and dynamic ability of the new BMW 7 Series. Available for all model variants aside from the BMW 745e xDrive, this active chassis control technology reduces rolling movements at the front and rear axle. The Active Comfort Drive with Road Preview system teams up with the standard two-axle air suspension and electronically controlled dampers to provide exceptional suspension and damping comfort and keep vibrations to a minimum. Active roll stabilization uses electric swivel motors to ensure fast and precise compensation of the lateral forces generated in dynamically taken corners. This enhances the car’s agility and directional stability when entering or exiting corners. The system noticeably increases comfort when driving straight ahead by counteracting disruptive forces resulting from road surface imperfections on any one side.
Active Comfort Drive with Road Preview also includes an anticipatory chassis control function. The new BMW 7 Series underlines its status as one of the luxury segment’s most innovative and models with a comprehensive range of standard and optional driver assistance systems. Numerous new functions have now been added to the systems, through the introduction of BMW’s latest generation of advanced driver assists systems, which come to the driver’s aid in all sorts of different situations and specifically enhance various aspects of comfort and safety in the process. They ease the driver’s workload in monotonous driving conditions, such as traffic jams and heavy flowing traffic, and make it easier to stay in complete control in awkward traffic situations. The optional Driving Assistance Professional package adds the Driving Assistance Professional suite of features. It offers extensive assistance to make driving as safe and as comfortable as possible. This comprehensive package adds Extended Traffic Jam Assistant for limited access highways, Active Cruise Control with Stop & Go, Active Lane Keeping Assistant with side collision avoidance, Steering & Traffic Jam Assistant, Automatic Lane Change and Evasion Assistant & Cross Traffic alert.
Extended Traffic Jam Assist for limited access highways greatly eases the driver’s burden during what may be the most tedious part of driving, stop and go highway traffic. Operating at speeds up to 37 mph on divided highways, this assist system uses the interior driver-facing camera to allow the driver extended hands off driving as long as they are attentive to the road ahead. It also handles acceleration and braking and is capable of adapting the road speed to the planned route with the help of navigation data. As a result, the vehicle is automatically decelerated to an appropriate speed in preparation for bends, junctions or roundabouts ahead. The camera-based traffic sign recognition system also makes use of the navigation data to glean information on upcoming speed restrictions so that they can be taken into consideration in advance.
Evasion Assistant & Cross-traffic alert can help avoid collisions with vehicles or pedestrians suddenly appearing in the driver’s path. As soon as an evasive maneuver corresponding to such a scenario is detected, the system supports the driver when they steer the vehicle into a clear adjacent lane.
Improved driver focus and visibility in the dark: BMW Head-Up Display and BMW Night Vision.
By projecting information graphics onto the windscreen, the optional BMW Head-Up Display provides a particularly effective means of focusing on the task of driving. During the parking maneuver, the system takes care of controlling the accelerator, brakes and steering as well as changing gear. In addition to this, the system can be used for automatically maneuvering out of parallel parking spaces too.
Unique in segment: Back-Up Assistant.
Another of the Parking Assistant Plus’s features is the ingenious Back-Up Assistant, which helps the driver to exit parking spots or maneuver when space is limited. This system is the only one of its kind in this segment and offers the highly convenient facility of automated reversing, especially in confined spaces or situations where the driver does not have a clear view, such as multi-story car parks, entrances to courtyards or narrow driveways. This is done by storing the steering movements made during the vehicle’s last forward maneuver when travelling at speeds up to 22 mph. The system is then able to steer the vehicle for distances of up to 50 yards along exactly the same line it took when moving forward. All the driver has to do is operate the accelerator and brake pedals and monitor the vehicle’s surroundings.
The Panorama View and 3D Top View features are used to depict a 360° image of the vehicle and its surroundings from different perspectives in the Control Display. The Remote 3D View function additionally gives drivers the ability to call up a three-dimensional live image of their vehicle and its immediate vicinity on their smartphone.

Standard specification for the new BMW 7 Series includes the BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant, an intelligent, digital helper which responds to the prompt “Hey BMW” and is an intrinsic element of the iDrive 7 operating system. The BMW Group is set to revolutionize driving ease with the BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant, as it marks the start of a new era in which drivers will increasingly be able to operate their car, access its functions and obtain information simply by speaking.
BMWs acquire a digital personality.
The BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant learns routines and habits, and is subsequently able to apply them in the appropriate context. It helps the driver, learns their preferences and is familiar with the settings they like to have for the seat heating, for example, or the places they navigate to frequently (“Take me home”). One unique feature compared with other digital assistants of this type is the option of naming it (such as “Charlie”) for even greater individuality and personality. Not only does the assistant await the driver’s every command, it’s always there to assist and even provide casual conversation. It is familiar with the vehicle’s functions and is able to operate them as required. Saying “Hey BMW, I’m cold” will prompt the BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant to adjust the temperature inside the car accordingly. The arrival of the BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant ensures there is always a genuine BMW professional on board. It is able to explain all sorts of different functions (“How does Park Distance Control work?”), provide current status information (“Is the oil level okay?”) and help answer questions (“What warning messages do I have?”). It knows the driver’s favorite settings, and can even activate a combination of them to enhance wellbeing. For instance, “Hey BMW, I’m tired” triggers a vitality program that adjusts the lighting mood, music and temperature, among other things, in order to make the driver feel more alert.

The BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant is, in short, the ideal assistant and comes in particularly useful during everyday driving (“Hey BMW, how far can I drive before I need to refuel?”). Navigation can now be made simpler than ever, as the assistant will suggest convenient parking, both on and off street, at the journey’s destination, provide information on any traffic jams along the route and even search for a café in the vicinity. Connected Navigation with new digital services.
“Connected Navigation” encompasses a number of digital services that are designed to turn seamless and contextual route planning both inside and outside the BMW into an even more sophisticated experience. Drivers of the new BMW 7 Series can share destinations from some of their favorite apps straight to their car’s navigation system. The key destinations will be stored in BMW Connected and synchronized with the car, so that the most important addresses can be accessed from any device at any time. One particularly helpful new feature is the Automatic Parking, which proposes various parking options both on and off street before the destination is reached. This service provides information on the nearest parking lots and garages as well as proposing routes offering a particularly good chance of finding a parking spot close to the destination. To help create the new Automatic Parking Assistant, the existing On-Street Parking Information data and Parkmobile services have been intelligently incorporated into its scope of functions.

The newly designed screen grouping comprising the instrument cluster and Control Display, together with the inclusion of new functions, enables intuitive operation to be taken to the next level in the new BMW 7 Series, while helping drivers to concentrate even more effectively on the road ahead. The standard BMW Live Cockpit Professional comprises a fully digital, high-resolution instrument cluster behind the steering wheel with a screen diagonal of 12.3 inches and a Control Display measuring 10.25 inches across. This package of equipment also features an adaptive navigation system and a hard-drive-based multimedia system with 20 GB of storage.
The BMW Live Cockpit Professional brings the 7th generation of BMW iDrive to the new BMW 7 Series. The operating system’s most recent incarnation boasts all-digital displays and is geared more closely to the driver’s personal needs – with the aim of maximizing their attention levels. The system’s clear presentation and structuring is designed to provide drivers with the right information at the right time, aided further by the customizable and personalized content. The redesigned information display in the center of the instrument cluster now leaves enough room for an excerpt from the navigation map, for instance. In the main menu on the Control Display, the driver is able to create and individually configure up to ten pages, each showing two to four widgets (tiles) with live content such as navigation, vehicle information and entertainment. The 2019 BMW X7 has finally made its debut and its quite big, and I'm not talking about the grille.
Parked next to the X5, the X7 is nine inches longer, making it the longest crossover BMW has sold. For the most part, BMW's designers didn't go too crazy with the design. The overall profile is similar to Mercedes' GLS-Class with a boxy profile and large glass area. One interesting trait is the rear doors being slightly longer than the front to allow for easier access into the second and third rows. Where designers decided to go nuts is the front end and its large kidney grilles. It's a bit much when contrasted with the slim LED headlights.
The X7's interior looks to be quite plush and spacious. A new dashboard design features a minimal amount of buttons and twin 12.3-inch screens for the instruments and the infotainment. A second-row bench comes standard, which allows the X7 to carry up to seven people. An optional set of captain chairs for the second-row have power adjustments. Cargo space is quite healthy for the class with 48.6 cubic feet behind the third row and 90.4 cubic feet with both rows folded.
Power for the U.S. will be provided by either the xDrive40i (turbocharged 3.0L inline-six; 335 horsepower and 330 pound-feet of torque) or the xDrive50i (twin-turbo 4.4L V8; 456 horsepower and 479 pound-feet of torque). Both engines come teamed with an eight-speed automatic and xDrive all-wheel drive. Optional on both powertains is either Dynamic Handling Package (active roll mitigation, a camera system that can firm up the suspension before a corner, rear-wheel steering) or Off-Road package.
BMW will begin taking preorders for the X7 this month, with deliveries beginning in March. Pricing begins at $73,900 for the xDrive40i and $92,600 for the xDrive50i - prices don't include destination.

Fifth production line at BMW Group Spartanburg plant
The new 2019 X7 becomes the fifth BMW model to be currently produced in Plant Spartanburg, South Carolina. The new X7 will be added to the 1,400 vehicles, including the X3, X4, X5 and X6, which are already produced every day at BMW Group’s largest global production plant. In 2017, the 10,000 employees of Plant Spartanburg produced 371,284 vehicles, 70 percent of which (272,346), were exported to 140 countries around the world, making BMW the largest exporter of vehicles from the U.S by value.
To date, the BMW Group has invested eight billion US dollars in Plant Spartanburg and is supported by 40 suppliers in the SC area and 300 suppliers across the U.S. The current manufacturing capacity stands at 450,000 vehicles and a further 1,000 new jobs are expected to be added by 2021. Since the plant opened on September 8, 1994, 3.9 million vehicles have been built at the South Carolina location.
BMW X7 exterior: A new dimension in luxury
BMW has pulled back the covers on a new definition of automotive luxury. The BMW X7 blends presence, exclusivity and spaciousness with the versatile and agile driving properties customers would expect from a BMW Sports Activity Vehicle (SAV). The newest and largest model in the BMW X line-up uses outstanding powertrain options and chassis technology, plus generous levels of space in each of its three rows of seats, a luxurious ambience and advanced equipment features, to deliver unparalleled experiences for the driver and passengers.
BMW’s new design language brings the modern elegance characteristic of the brand’s luxury-segment models to the exterior of the BMW X7, and adds visual poise, assurance and an overriding sense of authority. The BMW X7 represents the next stage in the premium carmaker’s ongoing model offensive in the luxury segment.
The expansive exterior dimensions of the BMW X7 take luxury to a new level. At 203.3 inches in length, 78.7 inches wide and 71.1 inches tall, and with a wheelbase of 122.2 inches, the X7 displays harmonious proportions and establishes itself as the new head of the BMW X model family. A new use of forms, dominated by clearly structured surfaces and precise lines, lends the BMW X7 its modern aura. The largest kidney grill ever designed for a BMW model features very prominently at the front of the new BMW X7. Together with the slim twin headlights extending up to the grill, it emphasizes the width of the car and creates presence. When viewed from the side, the large windows and long, flowing roofline of the new BMW X7 hint at a spacious interior bathed in light. The rear doors are longer than the front doors, emphasizing the spaciousness of the SAV’s rear compartment and easing entry and exit for second and third row seat occupants. Clearly structured surfaces and the eye-catching character line rising up to the rear are hallmarks of the brand’s new design language. The versatile functionality of the new BMW X7 is highlighted by its 8.7 inches of ground clearance.
The sizeable dimensions of the new BMW X7 are also expressed at the rear, which is broken up by horizontal lines and bordered by vertical separating edges. The slim LED rear lights provide a clear segmentation of the rear. Bridging the space between the two units is a chrome bar – a design cue only previously encountered at the rear of the BMW 7 Series luxury sedan.
BMW X7 Interior: More space for an exclusive ambiance
The impressive open expanse of the BMW X7 interior brings a new sensation of space to the luxury segment. The three rows of seats treat the driver and passengers to an exceptional feeling of roominess within the X7’s elegantly appointed interior surroundings. Expansive surfaces and clean structures give the instrument panel a modern look and its lines flow smoothly into the door panels. Large trim surfaces framed with electroplated accents on the instrument panel and center console enhance the interior’s elegant and exclusive aura.
Grouped together clearly in the center console are the iDrive Controller, newly designed gear selector, the start/stop button, the Driving Experience Control switches, electronic parking brake switch and controls governing the settings for the air suspension and optional off-road modes. The control panel for the standard 4-zone climate control system also has a new modern design.
A standard three-panel electronically controlled panoramic glass sunroof floods the interior with light. Combined with the large windows, the new BMW X7 offers a very open an airy environment to all vehicle occupants, irrespective of which seat they are in. Electrically controlled sliding headliner shades are standard for the front, center and rear sunroof with the third row passengers having their own controls for the rear sliding shade.
The roominess and versatility of the interior is underlined by the standard fitment of three rows of seats (offering space for seven people). The two passengers in the third row can settle into full-size seats that are fully capable of accommodating adult passengers over longer journeys. Comfort levels here are enhanced by an additional rear glass sunroof panel, cup holders and armrests integrated into the side panel trim. The standard second row configuration offers seating for three. Alternatively, two extremely comfortable individual Captain’s Chairs can be specified for the middle row as an option. These comfort seats offer the same range of adjustments as the seats for the driver and front passenger. The individual seats for the second row also feature integrated armrests and comfort cushions. Two second-row seats with a space between them represent a first for a BMW SAV and create an exceptionally luxurious ambience in the rear compartment. The space between the individual seats also provides an access route to the third row.
In either standard or optional configuration, the second-row seats in the X7 slide fore and aft through 5.7 inches of travel. Adjustment of the fore/aft position – like all other seat positions and backrest angles – is electric for the first, second and third row of seats. The backrests of the seats in the second and third rows can be folded down and raised electrically via switches located on the driver’s side as you enter through the rear doors and in the cargo area. The seats in the second row can also be tilted forward fully to make getting in and out as easy as possible for third-row passengers. The second-row seats can be returned to their upright position at the touch of a button, at which point child seats can be fixed in place securely and easily using the ISOFIX attachments.
The fore/aft position of the second-row seats is adjusted using a control panel integrated into the driver’s door. Drivers of the new BMW X7 can move the front-passenger’s seat backwards and forwards at the touch of a button located nearby. This allows the driver to increase both legroom and ease of entry/exit for the passengers in the second and third row of seats as required. Additional buttons for seat and backrest adjustment are located in the rear doors. The backrests of the second - and third-row seats can also be folded down and raised – and the second-row seats moved fore and aft – from the cargo area. When all six/seven seats are in use, the new BMW X7 offers 48.6 cubic feet of load capacity. This increases to a maximum 90.4 cubic feet when the backrests of the standard second row bench seat and third row seats are folded down. The standard air suspension allows the car to be lowered (at the touch of a button in the trunk) to make loading cargo easier. The new BMW X7 features a two-section split tailgate, both elements of which have electric opening and closing as standard.
Power and Performance
The new 2019 BMW X7 launches with a choice of two updated gasoline engines. Heading up the range is the BMW X7 xDrive50i, with an extensively updated 4.4-liter V8 engine. A 3.0-liter inline six-cylinder engine, found under the hood of the new BMW X7 xDrive40i rounds out the model line-up. All engines channel their power through an eight-speed Steptronic transmission, while BMW xDrive intelligent all-wheel drive is on hand to ensure that power is transferred into secure progress – on or off road.
The BMW TwinPower Turbo technology in both gasoline engines features turbocharging, High Precision Injection, VALVETRONIC fully variable valve timing and Double-VANOS variable camshaft timing.
The new V8 engine: Unrivalled power and an unmistakable sound
Fundamentally upgraded from crankcase to engine management system, the eight-cylinder engine in the BMW X7 xDrive50i serves up an intoxicating blend of power delivery and signature V8 soundtrack. The two turbochargers’ positioning in the “V” between the banks of cylinders is just one of the standout features of the 4.4-liter unit. Newly designed heat plates ensure very effective thermal shielding for the crankcase and cylinder head. A new ignition system allows the engine to be restarted even more smoothly and swiftly when the Auto Start Stop function is activated.
The new engine’s peak torque of 479 lb-ft is available over a broad rev range from 1,500 to 4,750 rpm, while its maximum output of 456 hp is on tap between 5,250 and 6,000 rpm. This formidable pulling power is available early and doesn’t let up, resulting in a 0 to 60 mph time of 5.2 seconds.
Inline-six cylinder gasoline engine with a thirst for revs.
The power unit fitted in the new BMW X7 xDrive40i boasts the free-revving ability inherent in all inline six-cylinder engines from BMW, plus a wonderfully eager response. The 3.0-liter engine employs a single twin-scroll turbocharger and direct injection technology whose maximum pressure of 5,076 psi ensures the fuel is delivered in extremely precise doses. The straight-six generates its maximum output of 335 hp between 5,500 and 6,500 rpm, while the peak torque 330 lb-ft is available from 1,500 – 5,200 rpm. The new BMW X7 xDrive40i accelerates from 0 to 60 mph in 5.8 seconds.
Eight-speed Steptronic transmission: more seamless and integrated
Both engine variants of the new BMW X7 are linked to an improved version of the eight-speed Steptronic transmission, whose wider ratio spread and new control electronics help to increase the powertrain’s overall efficiency. New torsion dampers reduce rotational forces and converter slip for improved shift comfort.
Intelligent connectivity enables the sport automatic transmission to adapt its shift strategy according to the route and driving situation. By working with the navigation system, the 8-speed Steptronic transmission sees the road ahead and combines this data with information from the Active Cruise Control system’s (optional on the X7 xDrive40i) radar sensor. This makes it possible for the transmission to shift proactively instead of reactively insuring not only that the shifts are more seamless but that the X7 is always in the correct gear for the upcoming road conditions. When approaching a vehicle ahead or approaching a downhill section for example, the 8-speed Steptronic transmission will shift down early in order to use engine braking to maintain speed or decelerate.
The Auto Start Stop function and the coasting function available in conjunction with the 8-speed Steptronic transmission in the new BMW X7 also benefit from data supplied by the navigation system and by data supplied by the standard Active Guard driving assistance systems’ front camera. In this way, inefficient engine shutdown – for example when stopping briefly at junctions or roundabouts – can be prevented. Movement of vehicles ahead is registered in order to determine the ideal moment for the Auto Start Stop function to stop and start the engine. The coasting function is now available when either ECO Pro or COMFORT mode is selected using the Driving Experience Control switch between 9 and 99 mph. The efficiency-enhancing decoupling of the powertrain only takes place in driving situations where performance and comfort would not be compromised. If the driver suddenly lifts off the accelerator, the powertrain stays connected so that engine braking can be used to support deceleration. For the same reason, powertrain disconnection is also prevented when approaching a junction or a vehicle ahead.
xDrive all-wheel drive with optional rear locking differential
The task of maximizing traction, agility and directional stability in the new BMW X7 falls to the latest generation of the BMW xDrive intelligent all-wheel-drive system, which is now able to split drive-torque between the front and rear wheels with even greater precision and speed as the situation demands. For added efficiency, full power can be directed completely to the rear wheels in situations where all-wheel drive traction is not required.
The new xDrive system offers a rear-biased set-up for those occasions when the driver adopts a more sporting style of driving. The optional electronically controlled rear M Sport differential (available for the X7 xDrive50i in both the Dynamic Handling Package and in the Off-Road Package) helps support these times of more dynamic driving. By limiting equalization of the rotational speeds of the inside and outside wheels through corners, the M Sport differential is able to optimize the transfer of power to the road in all driving situations. As a result, the new BMW X7 can power out of bends with exceptional momentum. Managed by the Dynamic Stability Control (DSC) system, the locking function for the rear differential also improves traction and power delivery when driving over loose ground or on road surfaces offering differing levels of grip for the left-rear and right-rear wheels. It does so by preventing a wheel from spinning when it is struggling for grip. The locking effect is produced by means of an electric motor and allows as much as 1,106 lb-ft of drive torque to be redirected from the wheel with less grip to the wheel with more grip.
Chassis and Suspension
The design of the new chassis, based on a double-wishbone front suspension and a five-link rear suspension provides the best balance of exceptional traction on rough terrain and excellent dynamic response and ride comfort on pavement. The BMW X7 SAV comes standard with the Dynamic Damper Control system with two-axle air suspension. The electronically controlled dampers sharpen the SAV’s handling while at the same time increasing ride comfort. The driver can select from two performance settings for a more comfort-oriented or sportier driving style.
Chassis options available make it possible to boost the off-road performance, sportiness or comfort of the new BMW X7 more intensely and effectively than ever before. The Dynamic Handling Package, available for both the X7 xDrive40i and X7 xDrive50i, includes Active Comfort Drive with road preview, Integral Active Steering, M Sport Brakes and on the xDrive50i, the M Sport rear Differential. This package affords the new X7 with exceptionally agility and dynamic driving qualities.
The Active Comfort Drive with road preview works with the two-axle air suspension and an active roll-stabilization system to not only improve agility and directional stability when turning into corners but to also optimize traction when accelerating out of them too. The system uses camera sensors to preview the road ahead of the vehicle and proactively make suspension adjustments to not only tighten up suspension settings for upcoming turns but to also increase straight-line comfort by actively countering oscillations triggered by road surface imperfections.
Speed-dependent Integral Active Steering turns the rear wheels either the same direction as the front, to enhance stability in high-speed maneuvers such as lane changes, or in the opposite direction to the front wheels, to facilitate low-speed maneuvering by decreasing the turning radius.
The standard two-axle air suspension system with automatic self-levelling not only provides a noticeable benefit to ride comfort but also allows electronic adjustment of vehicle ride height to meet various needs. The suspension’s air supply is controlled individually for each wheel using an electrically driven compressor with pressure reservoir, enabling it to balance out an unevenly loaded vehicle. Since the air suspension works in tandem with the Dynamic Stability Control (DSC) system, the vehicle load registered by its sensors can be factored into braking calculations. When the SPORT driving mode is engaged or the vehicle’s speed exceeds 85 mph, its ride height is automatically lowered by 0.8 inches. The driver can also adjust the body’s ground clearance – for off-road driving, for example – by pushing a button in the cockpit. The vehicle can be raised in two stages up to a maximum of 1.6 inches above the standard setting. Another button in the luggage compartment activates a loading mode that lowers the vehicle by 1.6 inches. The next time the engine is started, the system will automatically revert to the last mode selected. The desired vehicle ride height can even be set with the engine switched off by using the optional BMW Display Key.
Color Palette and interior features
The all-new 2019 BMW X7 will offer a choice of six popular existing and brand new colors at launch, including non-metallic Alpine White and metallic paints in Carbon Black with M Sport Package, Black Sapphire, Mineral White, Arctic Grey and Vermont Bronze. Three more colors will be introduced as of April 2019 production, including Jet Black, Dark Graphite, and Phytonic Blue.
The X7 xDrive40i comes standard with Black SensaTec or a choice of nine premium Vernasca and Extended Merino Leathers. The X7 xDrive50i features standard Vernasca leather interior in Black, Canberra Beige, Coffee or Cognac with the option to upgrade to an Extended Merino Leather interior in Black, Ivory White, Coffee or Tartufo. A two-tone Ivory White/Navy Blue Full Leather Merino interior, with a Navy Blue leather dashboard and a Navy Blue Alcantara headliner, can be specified for both models.
The luxurious interiors can be further enhanced with options such as Leather Dashboard, Glass Controls for the Start/Stop button, Gear Shift lever, iDrive Controller and radio volume knob, Panoramic Sky Lounge LED Roof and Front Ventilated and Massaging Seats.
Extended list of optional equipment
The list of optional equipment available for the new 2019 BMW X7 is designed to further tailor BMW’s latest premium Sports Activity Vehicle to reflect the personality and requirements of the owner.
Remote Engine Start, 22 inch alloy wheels and a factory installed tow hitch, rated for 7,500 lbs. are just some of the notable individual options available for the BMW X7.
5-Zone Automatic Climate Control is available as part of the Cold Weather Package, which also includes Front and Rear Heated Seats and Heated Front Seat Armrests and Steering Wheel.
The Premium Package includes Remote Engine Start, Soft-Close automatic doors, rear electric side window shades, Heated and Cooled Cup Holders, Heads-Up Display, Harman Kardon Surround Sound Audio (standard on the X7 xDrive50i) and Gesture Control.
The Executive Package for the X7 xDrive50i includes the Panoramic Sky Lounge LED Roof. Glass Controls and BMW Laserlight headlights.
The Panorama Sky Lounge LED Roof, generates a very special and exclusive aura when darkness falls, with LED light spreading evenly across the glass surfaces to illuminate more than 15,000 graphic patterns and generate a display reminiscent of a starlit sky. The color scheme of this atmospheric light show can be adapted as desired.
Standard Driver Assist Systems
Offering a significantly expanded array of driver assistance systems, the new BMW X7 is able to support the driver through an array of interconnected sensors by processing camera images and data acquired by radar.
The BMW X7 xDrive40i comes standard with Active Protection and Active Driving Assistant including Blind Spot Detection, Lane Departure Warning, Rear Collision Warning, Frontal Collision Warning and Pedestrian Warning with City Collision Mitigation (which now also alerts the driver if cyclists are detected) Cross Traffic Alert Rear, and Speed Limit Information.
The BMW X7 xDrive50i adds standard Parking Assistant Plus which provides Top View, Panorama View and 3D View. The xDrive50i also includes Head-Up Display and Active Driving Assistant Professional with Active Lane Keeping Assistant and Extended Traffic Jam Assistant for limited access highways.
Active Driving Assistant Professional: Comprehensive safety and comfort
Standard on the X7 xDr50i and optional on the X7 xDrive40i, the Driving Assistant Professional package is comprised of the Extended Traffic Jam Assist for limited access highways as well as the Lane Keeping Assistant with Active Side-Collision protection. Extended Traffic Jam Assist supports the driver during one of the most tedious driving situations, stop-and-go highway traffic. The system can be used on limited access highways up to a speed of 37 mph and uses a driver-facing optical/infrared camera located in the digital instrument cluster to monitor the driver’s eye and nose position to determine if they are monitoring the road ahead. As long as the driver is found to be attentive to the road ahead, the need for the driver to place their hands on the wheel every 30-50 seconds is not required.
This interior camera is also used to support the standard driver alertness monitoring system which suggests that one stop and take a relaxing break if it deems that the driver is becoming tired and less alert.
The Automatic Lane Change feature can be used on highways when the Lane Keeping Assistant is active. Holding the direction indicator in the required direction is all it takes to initiate a lane change. If the sensors detect that there is space in the adjacent lane and that no other vehicle is approaching at high speed, the driver benefits from helpful steering assistance during the lane change.
Another component of the system is the Evasion Aid, which can help avoid collisions with vehicles or pedestrians that appear suddenly in the vehicle’s path. As soon as an evasive maneuver corresponding to such a scenario is detected, the system assists the driver with steering inputs to direct the vehicle into a clear adjacent lane.
The array of assistance systems contained in this wide-ranging suite of safety and comfort features is composed of the Active Cruise Control (ACC) with Stop & Go and Cross Traffic Alert Front which reduces the risk of a collision when maneuvering forwards towards crossing traffic where visibility is restricted. Also, changing speed limits identified by the Speed Limit Info system can be used by the Automatic Cruise Control system to match the vehicle’s cruise control speed to the road’s posted speed limit.
Emergency Stop Assistant: Active assistance when needed
A new development in the field of safety systems is the Emergency Stop Assistant, which is a component of the optional Driving Assistant Professional package. Intended to be used in situations where the driver is suddenly incapacitated because of a medical emergency, it is activated by pulling the electric parking brake switch. Depending on the driving situation and the vehicle’s surroundings, the Emergency Stop Assistant will bring the vehicle to a standstill either in the current lane, at the edge of the road or on the hard shoulder. At the same time, the hazard warning lights are activated and the Intelligent Emergency Call function automatically notifies the BMW Assist call center so the emergency services can be alerted.
Parking Assistant Professional: For comfortable maneuvering into parking spaces
The new BMW X7 is equipped with standard rear-view camera and Park Distance Control (PDC), which includes sensors at the front and rear of the vehicle.
The Parking Assistant Professional package, standard in the X7 xDrive50i, and optional in the X7 xDrive40i, enables automatic selection and use of parallel parking spaces. These parking spaces are detected by ultrasonic sensors as the vehicle passes them. The Parking Assistant function is activated at the touch of a button on the center console. The system then takes care of the acceleration, braking, steering and gear changes necessary to maneuver into the space.
Back-Up Assistant: Unique, high-precision guidance in tight spaces
Back-Up Assistant offers an unmatched level of assistance when leaving a parking space or maneuvering in a confined area. The Back-Up Assistant takes over steering to maneuver the vehicle mirroring the path most recently used in the forward direction. This system makes reversing for a distance of up to 50 yards an effortless task in the new 2019 BMW X7. All the driver has to do is operate the accelerator and brakes and monitor the surrounding area. The system is initiated by pressing a button when the vehicle is stationary and the gear selector is in the “P” position. The steering movements made during the vehicle’s last forward maneuver are stored by the system and retained. This means the Back-Up Assistant can be used to maneuver the new BMW X7 backwards out of a parking position that it drove into forwards the previous day.
The driver enjoys ideal all-round visibility, thanks to both the standard rear-view camera and the optional Top View, Panorama View and 3D View which are part of Parking Assistant Plus, which create a 360-degree image of the vehicle and its surroundings in the Center Display. In addition, drivers can use the Remote 3D View feature, part of the BMW ConnectedDrive App, to access a three-dimensional live image of their vehicle and surroundings on a smartphone no matter where they are at that moment.
BMW Live Cockpit Professional: Seventh generation of BMW iDrive
The BMW Live Cockpit Professional, standard in the new 2019 BMW X7, combines a new display and control concept and the ultimate in connectivity to create a superb all-round package. The latest-generation of the iDrive comprises a high-resolution digital 12.3” instrument cluster display behind the steering wheel and a 12.3” center display diagonally across. The system offers many hardware upgrades including new haptic controls on the iDrive controller, an advanced tablet-like touch interface, stunning visualizations, and the largest displays available in a BMW. This latest system perfectly blends the strengths of previous iDrive concepts with the modern ways in which people interface with their popular electronic devices. The multi-modal approach of the iDrive touch controller, large touchscreen center display, cloud based voice control, and gesture control allow users to interact in the way of their choosing.
The seventh incarnation of iDrive has a cutting-edge, fully-digital design and is geared more closely to the driver’s needs by allowing them to tailor the system to their own preferences with customizable widgets of information. This new level of personalization is then stored in the BMW cloud and can follow the customer to other BMW vehicles. Information from categories such as driving, entertainment, navigation, connectivity, and from the vehicle info itself, can be selected in nearly any combination in any of four layouts on the Center Display. Multiple pages can be created and easily accessed with a simple swipe across the screen with a finger.
To maximize the capabilities of the large 12.3” digital instrument cluster, the traditional circular gauges have evolved into an new design that pushes the digital speedometer and tachometer gauges to the outer edges of the display as geometric bands. This new design opens space in the middle for routing and navigation. Information from the center display can also be shown within the tachometer. The drive mode selected via the Driver Experience Control also effects the appearance of the instrument cluster.
Other elements of the BMW Live Cockpit Professional are the Navigation Professional system, a hard-drive-based multimedia system with 20 GB of memory and six USB ports, plus Bluetooth interfaces. The driver can be automatically detected and personal settings activated either using the traditional vehicle key or by downloading the driver’s personal settings from the BMW Cloud.
Drivers can enjoy the full benefits of the car’s intelligent connectivity capabilities through vehicle apps such as news, weather, office and online search. Other capabilities include Intelligent Emergency Call – which automatically summons swift assistance in an emergency – and regular updates for the navigation system’s maps.
A collection of bundled digital services will be offered for the new BMW X7 as the Connected Package Professional. The Connected Package Professional provides Remote Services, Concierge Services, On-Street Parking Information, and Real Time Traffic Information for the first 4 years of ownership. This package allows easy integration and adaptation of new technology over time. Customers can continue to download various new digital services individually as they become available or renew existing services via the ConnectedDrive Store.
BMW Connected: digital services for individual mobility
BMW Connected is the companion app for BMW drivers. Intelligent connectivity helps users to reach their destination easily and with minimal stress – and not only when in their car; BMW Connected is an all-embracing concept designed to seamlessly connect the driver and their smartphone with their vehicle.
At the heart of it all is the Open Mobility Cloud, which allows the app to connect the car with the customer’s digital devices. These could include the iPhone and Apple Watch, smartphones and smartwatches running the Android operating system, Alexa-compatible smart devices and Google Home. For instance, the BMW Connected app can import appointments and addresses from the customer’s calendar entries straight into the navigation system to begin route guidance. The system calculates the optimum departure time based on real-time traffic information and notifies the driver with a message on their smartphone when it is time to leave. As the vehicle is linked up via the Open Mobility Cloud, it is able to access the calculated route directly when the navigation system starts up.
Audio and entertainment
The standard audio system in the BMW X7 xDrive40i features 10 speakers and 205 watts of power. A Harman Kardon Surround Sound Audio is standard in the X7 xDrive50i, optional on the X7 xDrive40i. Wireless Charging and WiFi Hotspot are standard for both models to integrate your favorite personal mobile devices into the BMW X7 experience. The Bowers & Wilkins Diamond Surround Sound is available as an option for both X7 models offers amplification of 1,500 watts, powering 20 speakers.
The optional Rear-seat Entertainment Professional system adds a pair of 10.2-inch full-HD touchscreen displays, a Blu-ray-compatible DVD player and an HDMI socket and two headphone jacks. The system works using the BMW iDrive 7 display and control system, and so allows those in the rear of the vehicle to select and operate entertainment functions. The rear-seat passengers can use both their own media sources and those available in the front compartment. A navigation map and BMW ConnectedDrive services can also be accessed in the rear seats.

Both X7 models come with Adaptive Full LED lights with Automatic High Beams as standard equipment. BMW Laserlights are available on the X7 xDrive50i with the optional Executive Package, which also includes Panoramic Sly Lounge LED Roof and Glass Controls.
BMW Head-Up Display: Larger projection area and optimized graphics
The BMW Head-Up Display, optional for the xDrive40i and standard on the xDrive50i, helps the driver to enjoy focused and extremely safe driving in the new BMW X7. It projects driving-related information directly into the driver’s field of vision on the windshield, where it can be assimilated without the need to divert their eyes from the road. The latest generation of the system boasts a larger projection area then that of past systems plus enhanced graphics and additional display readings. The information projected by the BMW Head-Up Display includes the car’s speed, speed limits and overtaking restrictions, Check Control messages, status indicators and warnings from the assistance systems, detailed route guidance and turn instructions, and telephone and entertainment lists.
Another feature activated in conjunction with the BMW Head-Up Display is distance warning, which is part of the Active Cruise Control system’s set of functions and flashes a graphic icon to alert the driver when they get closer to the vehicle in front than the pre-set minimum distance.
Displays and iDrive: Premier for the BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant
Making its debut in the new BMW 3 Series Sedan is the BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant, an intelligent, digital character that responds to the prompt “Hey BMW”. The BMW Group is set to revolutionize driving pleasure with the BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant and, in so doing, enter a new era in which drivers will increasingly be able to operate their car and access its functions and information simply by speaking. The range of functions and skills available will be constantly expanded as part of regular updates.
BMWs acquire a digital personality
The BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant learns routines and habits, and is subsequently able to apply them in the appropriate context. He helps the driver, learns their preferences and is familiar with their favored settings – e.g. for the seat heating or the places they drive to frequently using the navigation system (“Take me home”). It is familiar with the vehicle’s functions and is able to operate them as required. Saying “Hey BMW, I’m cold” will prompt the BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant to adjust the temperature inside the car accordingly. The assistant will benefit from technical upgrades and be able to learn more and more preferences and favored settings. The assistant takes further strides forward with every command given, every question asked and every setting selected.
A constant on-board companion: the digital BMW expert
The arrival of the BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant ensures there is always a genuine BMW professional on board. He is able to explain all sorts of different functions (“How does the High Beam Assistant work?”), provide current status information (“Is the oil level okay?”) and help answer questions (“What warning messages do I have?”). He knows the driver’s favorite settings, and can even activate a combination of them to enhance well-being. For instance, “Hey BMW, I feel tired” triggers a vitality program that adjusts the lighting mood, music and temperature, among other things, in order to make the driver feel more awake.
The perfect driver assistant
The Intelligent Personal Assistant is, in short, the ideal co-driver and comes in particularly useful during everyday driving (“Hey BMW, what is the closest gas station on my route”). To make navigation particularly easy, drivers can give him access to their calendar and contacts, which will enable him to find parking spaces at the destination, provide information on traffic jams along the route and remind the driver when they need to set off. It also learns destinations the customer drives to frequently.
BMW Digital Key: turning the smartphone into a car key
The BMW Digital Key employs Near Field Communication (NFC) technology to allow the new BMW X7 to be locked and unlocked from a compatible smartphone, removing the need for a conventional car key. Holding the smartphone up to the door handle opens the car. Once inside, the engine can be started as soon as the phone has been placed in the wireless charging or smartphone tray. Accessible via the BMW Connected app, the Digital Key offers unrivalled flexibility. The BMW Digital Key is compatible for all NFC-capable Samsung Galaxy smartphones running Android 8.0 and above. Compatibility is limited to select carriers.
Always up to date thanks to Remote Software Upgrade
The Remote Software Upgrade feature keeps the vehicle up to date with the latest software. All updates can be loaded over the air, similar to smartphones. The upgrades can be loaded onto a smartphone via the BMW Connected app when connected to a domestic Wi-Fi network or imported directly via the BMW’s built-in SIM card, which happens automatically for important vehicle upgrades.
When BMW introduced the 2019 8-Series back in June, they only announced one powertrain - a turbocharged 4.4L V8 producing 523 horsepower and 553 pound-feet of torque paired up with xDrive all-wheel drive. As we said in our report, expect BMW to detail other engines in due course.
Australia's GoAuto had the chance to speak with Carsten Groeber, BMW's vice-president of product management (luxury class). He revealed that the V12 from the M760Li xDrive would not be offered.
“V12 is very heavy and we have a very perfect weight distribution with this car. So the package with the V8 with those technologies with the chassis and the drivetrain makes the car a proper sportscar. In our opinion a V12 will be too heavy in the front,” said Groeber.
While the V12 does produce 600 horsepower and 590 pound-feet of torque, it would make the 8-Series even heavier. With the V8 and xDrive, the 8-Series tips the scales at 4,478 pounds.
Also off the table for the time-being is a plug-in hybrid.
“Never say never. There might be in the years to go. We are a learning company and as the market turns, if we need to do something we will react. But at this point in time, in 2018, the car is perfectly set up, and I think people love to have these cars.”
One variation that will be coming in the future will be a rear-drive version, wearing the sDrive nomenclature.

The past decade has seen BMW exploring new niches in the marketplace with such models as the X6 and 5-Series GT. Some of them had paid off, while others haven't. The 3-Series GT falls into the latter. Following in the footsteps of the 5-Series GT (now 6-Series GT), the 3-Series offered a higher seating position and extra space for those who didn't want and SUV. But it never found an audience and BMW has decided to kill it off.
“When we did the GT we saw that in demographic change people want to sit a little more upright. But then you saw X1 and X3 you can sit upright and you feel younger. So this segment is under pressure from SUVs, which are having no disadvantage in fuel consumption or in ride and handling,” said Klaus Fröhlich, BMW's r&d chief to Motoring.
Last May, we reported that the next 3-Series GT would have moved over to the 4-Series lineup - similar to what BMW did to the 5-Series GT. But it seems those plans are off the table.
Its unclear at the moment when BMW could end production of the 3-Series GT.

By 2025, BMW is planning to have 25 electrified vehicles in its lineup - 12 being full electric. One of those models will look somewhat similar to the Vision iNext concept that has been revealed today.
Lets address the elephant in the room, the exterior design. The overall shape is very polarizing (we know, huge understatement) with a grotesque take on BMW's iconic double kidney grille, square fenders, large glass area, and wheels that looked liked they were pulled off from a fan. No side view mirrors are to be found - instead a set of cameras handle that. There are also door handles. Instead, the surface of the car will light up, indicating where to touch to open the doors.
Moving inside, BMW's designers went for a wide-open lounge design with an end table masquerading as a center console and the backseat looking more like a love seat. The steering wheel and pedals can pop out or tuck away with a touch of the BMW logo on the transmission selector. Two large screens dominate the dash - the smaller one serves as the instrument cluster and the larger one is for the infotainment system.
BMW has also fitted some interesting tech to the Vision iNext. The rear seat has integrated touch control surfaces and LED lighting that allows a passenger gestures to control certain functions. For example, you can turn on the audio system by drawing a musical note. Intelligent Beam is a projector over the rear seat can turn any surface - like a piece of paper into an interactive screen. The image follows whatever object it is being projected on, meaning you don't have to hold it steady. BMW has also fitted a Intelligent Personal Assistant like Apple's Siri. It responds you when you say "Hey BMW' and allows you to control various functions.
BMW hasn't detail the Vision iNext's powertrain, but did reveal that it has Level 3 autonomous capability.
A production model that will carry a number of traits from the Vision iNext will launch in 2021.

At the BMW AG Annual General Meeting in May 2018, Harald Krüger, Chairman of the Board of Management at the BMW Group, described iNext as follows: “The iNEXT project will provide our building blocks for the future, from which the entire company and all of its brands are set to benefit.”
iNEXT addresses the big question that is at the heart of the BMW Group’s day-to-day work: “How will we be moving around in future?” iNEXT builds resolutely on the idea that first took shape in 2007 with “project i” and evolved into the launch of the BMW i3 in 2013. The BMW Group has already achieved a great deal on this front: it now has over ten years of experience with electric mobility under its belt in both small-scale and large-scale production, the BMW i models are being improved all the time, and their technology is being employed to gradually electrify models from the BMW and MINI ranges. The next step now is the complete in-car integration of the strategic innovation fields Autonomy + Connectivity + Electric + Services.
The Design, meanwhile, is a visual expression of the innovation fields and answers the question about what the driving pleasure experience is going to look like in future. The car we know today as BMW iNEXT will come onto the market in 2021.
The BMW Vision iNEXT.

The series-produced version of the BMW iNEXT will assume the role of a new technology flagship; production at Plant Dingolfing is slated to begin in 2021. It will take the BMW Group’s strategic innovation fields (“D+ACES”) onto the road for the first time as a single package.
A future-focused Vision Vehicle – the BMW Vision iNEXT – provides a tangible preview of how the BMW iNEXT might look. “Personal mobility is set to experience significant change,” explains Klaus Fröhlich, Member of the Board of Management of BMW AG, responsible for Development. “The possibilities opened up by autonomous driving and ever-expanding connectivity enable a whole new range of experiences and ways of shaping a journey. With this in mind, we have designed the all-electric BMW Vision iNEXT as a mobile environment that enhances quality of life, a new “Favourite Space” in which we can be ourselves and relax. The exterior – modern elegance, expressed with confidence.
Boasting the size and proportions of a modern BMW SAV, the BMW Vision iNEXT cuts an authoritative figure. The vehicle instantly conveys its trailblazing character through clearly sculpted forms and surfaces. Striking paintwork and sophisticated details strengthen this impression further. The Liquid Greyrose Copper exterior gradually changes in shade from warm copper to dark rose and injects the vehicle with dynamic flair even when stationary.
The large, interlinked double-kidney grille, the iconic side window graphic, and the blue accent surfaces at the front, sides and rear have clearly adopted the BMW i styling that already featured on the BMW i Vision Dynamics presented in 2017. Unlocking the vehicle causes the blue accents to light up, accentuating its eye-catching lines. Glass surfaces such as the large windows and the lights are integrated seamlessly into the design and have the appearance of elaborate inlays.
Kidney grille and “four-eyed” front end provide identity.
In the centre of the front end stands a large, upright kidney grille. As with all electrically powered vehicles, the grille is blanked off. With no combustion engine to require cooling, the kidney element now serves as an “intelligence panel” housing various sensors.
A 3D-printed pattern points to the technology below the surface. Super-slim headlights are part of a modern interpretation of BMW’s signature four-eyed front end. The windscreen extends smoothly into a large panoramic roof, lending the rump of the car a visual lightness and ensuring the innovative interior is clearly visible from the outside.
Modern appearance with opposing doors.
The BMW Vision iNEXT displays the powerful, robust stance of a modern BMW SAV when viewed from the side. The vehicle’s functional two-box proportions and long roofline hint at the ample space inside. The long wheelbase and short overhangs, meanwhile, give the silhouette a dynamic edge. Powerfully sculpted surfaces curve along the flanks like well-defined muscles. Precisely placed lines intensify this interplay and lend added impact to the wheel arches. The large (24-inch) wheels are aerodynamically efficient, and their three-dimensional, sculptural design represents both a stylistic and functional highlight. Cameras assume the job of the exterior mirrors, while touch-sensitive illuminated graphics take the place of conventional door openers, underlining the modern, enclosed appearance. There are two large opposing doors with no B-pillar separating them. When opened, they provide an unobstructed view of the spacious interior, while the frame reveals carbon-fibre surfaces. Black cladding brings the bottom edge of the flanks to an SAV-style conclusion and incorporates a blue accent strip as a marker of the vehicle’s electric drive system.
At the rear, the horizontal arrangement of the lines and surfaces creates a wide and dynamic stance. The slender and distinctive rear lights extend a long way into the car’s rear end and emphasise its appearance. The air flows along the roof and this combines with a diffuser – that is illuminated for added impact – to enhance the car’s aerodynamics.
Interior – My Favourite Space.
BMW Vision iNEXT drivers can choose to either drive themselves (in “Boost” mode) or be driven (“Ease” mode). “Boost” mode uses the electric drive system to deliver a highly dynamic and virtually silent driving experience with zero emissions. In “Ease” mode, the vehicle offers the driver and passengers a space in which to engage in a wide range of activities. The BMW Vision iNEXT can be a place of relaxation, interaction, entertainment or concentration, as desired; the possibilities are as manifold as the occupants’ needs. Accordingly, the cabin is more akin to a comfortable and fashionably furnished “living space” on wheels – a new “Favourite Space”.
Relaxed interior ambience.
The large panoramic roof floods the interior with light, creating a cheerful, welcoming atmosphere. Two individual seats in the front plus a one-piece bench in the rear mean there is room for up to four people. There are just a few, clean-cut lines defining the interior – a geometry that truly brings the materials and colours to the fore. A blend of cloth and wood materials produces a high-quality impression and makes various elements resemble furniture. The nude shade Purus Rosé, Brown and Beige are mainly used for the cockpit’s colour scheme, with accents in the shimmering metallic Mystic Bronze. The rear compartment is dominated by the chiefly petrol-coloured Enlighted Cloudburst cloth upholstery with its intricate Jacquard weave, which runs asymmetrically across the seat area and extends into the side panelling and parcel shelf. The result is a visual separation between the cockpit and the rear that produces the effect of different furnishings in an apartment.
“Boost” and “Ease” modes alter the driver’s environment.
Inside the generously sized cockpit, the driver’s area is defined by the two visible digital display panels and the steering wheel. The flat dashboard with beige cloth covering teams up with touches of wood and a clearly patterned wooden floor to create a pleasant, homely ambience. In “Boost” mode, the steering wheel and displays are positioned clearly towards the driver. When “Ease” mode is engaged, the driver’s immediate environment changes: the steering wheel retracts slightly, creating a more open sense of space. The display panels switch from driving-related content to “Exploration Mode”, which provides the driver and passengers with suggestions of places and events in the surrounding area that could be of interest to them. Plus, the front seat head restraints can be folded back, allowing the people in the front to communicate more effectively with the passengers in the rear.
Centre console resembles a high-quality piece of furniture.
The centre console between the front seats has all the makings of a high-quality piece of furniture, thanks to both its design and materials. A matt, open-pore wood finish gives it the appearance of a floating coffee table that continues right through to the rear. Under the fine wooden panel is a shell made from exquisite, illuminated crystal glass sitting atop a delicate, bronze-coloured base. The crystal’s faceting refracts the incoming light, splits it up into a multitude of colours and bathes the interior in light reflections.
Inviting rear compartment.
At first glance, the rear compartment has the appearance of a modern, high-end living space. A generously sized, continuous seat area gives the rear a laid-back lounge character and invites its occupants to stay a while. The handwoven Enlighted Cloudburst Jacquard cloth extends across the entire seat area and into the side panelling, gradually changing from Petrol to White in the process, but still lends the cabin a very modern touch.
Shy Tech: Innovative technology integrated out of sight yet always available.
Apart from the steering wheel and displays in the driver’s area, there are no other screens or controls to be seen in the BMW Vision iNEXT. In order to preserve the homely character of the rear compartment, and therefore keep the people on board at centre stage, the intelligent technology is integrated out of sight. Only when it is required by the driver or passengers does the technology becomes visible and operable. For example, in future it may be possible to operate various functions via surfaces made out of wood or cloth. Displays would no longer be essential, as intelligent projection could turn any surface into an interactive display. The BMW Vision iNEXT highlights three different, visionary applications for this “Shy Tech” in the form of Intelligent Personal Assistant, Intelligent Materials and Intelligent Beam.
Intelligent Personal Assistant. The vehicle’s Intelligent Personal Assistant switches on in response to the prompt “Hey BMW”. The BMW Vision iNEXT forms an integral part of the digital world and is seamlessly interlinked with the BMW Connected, smart devices and smart home network, making it possible for drivers to close the windows of their house, for example, by voice command.
Intelligent Materials. When driving in “Boost” mood the Control Display can be operated in conventional style using its touch functionality. But in “Ease” mode, the centre console’s wooden surface assumes this control function instead. Arm and hand posture is just as relaxed as when using the iDrive Controller: the hand simply lies on the perforated wooden surface and, whenever any inputs are made, points of light resembling a comet’s tail will follow the finger. The Jacquard cloth in the rear also possesses integral control functionality. It comes to life at the touch of a finger and allows music playback to be controlled using various gestures, which are given visual emphasis by LEDs that light up underneath the cloth.
Intelligent Beam. In the use of media, as with vehicle operation, the digital and analogue worlds will merge into one more and more in future. It is becoming increasingly possible to visualise information in projected form, which could dispense with the need for displays in the long term. The Intelligent Beam technology being showcased in the BMW Vision iNEXT already goes one step in this direction, as it can serve as both a reading light and an interactive projection screen. This enables, for instance, the text in a printed book to be supplemented by images, moving content and interactive graphics, all of which can be controlled by touch.
BMW will become the next automaker to drop their diesel offerings in the U.S. Speaking to Green Car Reports, BMW spokesman Alexander Schmuck revealed diesels would be dropped for the 2019 model year for the automaker to focus on plug-in hybrids.
"We're putting all our eggs in the PHEV basket," said Schmuck.
BMW brought back diesel power in 2008 with the 335d and X5 3.0d that used a turbodiesel inline-six. This would be followed up by a turbodiesel four-cylinder for the 3-Series and X3, along with the inline-six for the 5-Series. But the Volkswagen diesel emission scandal in late 2015, along with stringent emissions testing and standards have caused sales of diesel vehicles to drop.
BMW's PHEV lineup is currently comprised of the 330e, 530e, 740e, and X5 xDrive40e. The automaker announced last week the 2021 X5 xDrive45e which boasts a range of 50 miles on electric power only.

For those who thought the BMW X2 was lacking in power will be happy to hear about the 2019 X2 M35i.
The X2 M35i is a M Performance model (not a full-blown M model), and sits alongside the M235i. Unlike the coupe, the X2 M35i skips the turbo inline-six. What you'll find instead is a hotted-up version of the 2.0L TwinPower turbocharged four-cylinder with 302 horsepower and 332 pound-feet of torque - making this the most powerful four-cylinder that BMW has ever built. This is paired with an eight-speed automatic and all-wheel drive. 0-60 mph is said to take about 4.9 seconds.
Other mechanical changes to the X2 M35i include a limited-slip differential on the front-axle, sport-tuned suspension, large brakes, and a quicker ratio for the power steering. Optional is an adaptive suspension with two manually adjustable modes.
To have the M35i standout from other X2 models, BMW designers added a a subtle aero kit, dark grey accents, 19-inch alloy wheels (20-inch alloys are available), and quad-exhaust tips.
No word on pricing, but BMW says production of the X2 M35i will begin November.

Woodcliff Lake...Today, BMW announced the newest member of the X2 Sports Activity Coupe family, the 2019 X2 M35i. The new BMW X2 has inspired a modern and young-at-heart target group following its premiere in March 2018. With its extroverted design, the BMW X2 interprets the character of a premium SAC (Sports Activity Coupes) in an entirely new way.
BMW’s most powerful 2-liter TwinPower Turbo engine.
The new 2019 BMW X2 M35i featuring a 302 hp 2.0L TwinPower turbocharged engine sets a new benchmark in 4-cylinder power and torque delivery for the BMW Brand. Behind this is BMW M GmbH, whose racing know-how flows into the development of many components in the X2 M35i model. The 2.0 liter TwinPower Turbo engine concealed under the M Performance engine cover is the very first M Performance 4-cylinder engine and at the same time BMW’s most powerful production 4-cylinder version yet. It delivers a maximum power output of 302 hp @ 5,000 – 6,250 rpm. Maximum torque is an extremely strong 332 lb-ft. @ 1,750 – 4,500 rpm.
To achieve such high performance results, BMW M left almost no major engine component group untouched. The crankshaft has been reinforced and features larger main bearings. New pistons with slightly reduced compression ratio (9.5:1 vs 10.2:1) allow for a larger turbocharger and increased boost. The intake airflow tract has been improved for higher flow. The cooling system has been upgraded to complement the increased vehicle capabilities.
To ensure that this power is securely transferred to the tarmac, the 2019 BMW X2 M35i comes standard with xDrive intelligent all-wheel drive technology in conjunction with the 8-speed sport automatic transmission including Launch Control. For the first time ever, a front axle BMW M Sport Differential makes its appearance and features Torsen-based limited slip capabilities with up to a 39% lock-up. The new M Sport differential is integrated into the 8-speed automatic transmission which itself features steering wheel shift paddles, M Performance specific tuning, additional transmission cooling and updated gear ratios. The BMW X2 M35i is capable of accelerating from 0 to 60 mph in just 4.9 seconds.
Outstanding driving dynamics thanks to M-specific tuning.
Being an M Performance automobile, the BMW X2 M35i features, in addition to a powerful engine, also an M Sport suspension system that has been specifically tuned and adapted to match the car’s more sporting character. A special technical highlight – and also a premiere for an M Performance automobile – is the M Sport Differential installed in the front axle. During highly dynamic driving maneuvers, this locking differential effectively reduces possible traction losses on the front wheels. In addition, the braking system has been upgraded for use on the X2 M35i. The M Sport braking system with fixed front axle and floating rear axle calipers in Dark Blue M metallic guarantees consistently short braking distances even under the highest loads.
Steering and suspension have also both been adapted to match the performance of the drive system. Thanks to a special tuning, the M sports steering features a quicker ratio and conveys to the driver an impressively direct and precise steering feel. The X2 M35i comes standard with the M Sport suspension with stiffer spring and damper rates as well as a 10 mm lower ride height. The rear axle carrier and lateral control arms have been redesigned to improve driving dynamics. An adaptive damper suspension offering two different manually selectable modes is available as an option.
Upgraded M Performance exterior design elements in Cerium Grey.
The more sporting focus of the 2019 BMW X2 M35i is reflected in exterior design M Performance elements finished in Cerium Grey and an aero kit based on the X2 M Sport Package. This begins at the front with full LED technology for the headlights and fog lights and continues with the double kidney grill in Cerium Grey and the newly designed side air intakes in the front fascia of the same color for best possible cooling of both the brakes and engine. The exterior mirrors receive caps in Cerium Grey. At the rear, the X2 M35i boasts a distinctive M rear spoiler and with an M Sport exhaust system with two tailpipes (each 100 mm in diameter) for both more aggressive sound and appearance. 19-inch Orbit Grey bicolor M Sport light alloy wheels in 715M styling are standard, (optional: 20-inch M Sport light alloy wheels in 721M styling and in Cerium Grey bicolor) and round off the exterior design features.
For the first time Exclusive M sports seats ensure perfect seating comfort and lateral support.
As with the exterior design highlights, the basis for the interior is the M Sport Package. The X2 M35i features a standard M Sport leather steering wheel with shift paddles and standard sport seats. The optional front M sports seats with integrated headrests not only look sporty and aggressive but offer improved lateral support for both driver and front passenger under increased cornering loads. The M sport seats are available upholstered in Magma Red Dakota Leather with perforations and black accents, or Black Dakota Leather with perforations. The standard sport seats are available in Black or Oyster SensaTec.
Trend-setting digital competence for state-of-the-art technologies.
In addition to the updates of both drive system and design, the 2019 BMW X2 M35i offers BMW’s trend-setting digital competence in the areas of operation and networking. The optional full-color BMW Head-Up Display offers a display range that is unprecedented in this vehicle segment. The latest generation of BMW ConnectedDrive and the new BMW Connected App are fitted. The wireless use of Apple CarPlay set further highlights. Driver assistant systems include, camera-based technologies such as Forward Collision Warning with City Collision Mitigation and Lane Departure Warning.

Last year, BMW used Monterey Car Week to show off the Z4 Concept. Today, the 2019 Z4 made its world debut at Pebble Beach.
The design matches up with the concept, for better and worse. The front end reminds us oddly of the Fiat 124 Spider with a sculpted hood, large headlights, and expansive vents. A set of kidney grilles feature mesh inserts. Along the side, there is a fair amount of sculpting for the doors and venting behind the front wheels. The back is very short and has a trunk that incorporates a ducktail spoiler. The particular model featured in the photos is known as the First Edition and comes with Frozen Orange Metallic paint, an anthracite fabric top, and 19-inch double spoke wheels.
Inside, BMW went for a minimalistic look with little brightwork and controls grouped around the driver. There is a digital gauge cluster and the option of a heads-up display.
The M40i designation means there is a turbocharged 3.0L inline-six engine. No power figures are given for the North American version, but the European version will see 350 horsepower. Whatever the power figure ends up being, 0-60 mph is said to take under 4.4 seconds. There will also be a 30i model that will use a 2.0L turbo-four.
The M40i model gets some additional performance goodies such as sport suspension setup, M Sport rear differential, and larger brakes.
BMW will be providing more details on the Z4 next month, where we'll hopefully get more details on the powertrains. As for when it will go on sale, the 30i will arrive at dealers next spring. The M40i follows in the summer.

Full Z4 model details and specifications to be announced on September 18, 2018. The all-new 2019 BMW Z4 30i will arrive in U.S. BMW Centers in Spring 2019 with the BMW Z4 M40i (including the First Edition) arriving in the Second Quarter.
There have been some rumors floating around for the past couple of years that BMW was planning to offer a 3-Series with a fully electric powertrain. Some new spy shots reveal that may come to fruition.
At first glance, this looks like a normal 3-Series sedan. But on the front doors, there is a label that reads "Electric Test Vehicle". BMW has also tried to disguise the fact this is an electric by attaching tailpipes, but the spy photographer says its a pure EV.
Not much is known about the electric powertrain or batteries. This mule was seen testing with a Tesla Model 3, suggesting that BMW sees it a direct competitor to the 3-Series EV. To do that, the model would need a range of over 200 miles. But sources at BMW tell Motor Trend that the range could be as close to 300 miles.
We do know the next 3-Series will transition the CLAR platform that uses a combination of steel, aluminum, and carbon fiber. It also looks like that the design will not change that much from the current model.
The next 3-Series is expected to debut at the Paris Motor Show in October. Whether we see the EV version is unclear.

The effects of the on-going trade spat between the U.S. and China are beginning to be felt. According to Reuters, BMW is increasing the pricing on the U.S.-built X5 and X6 crossovers for the Chinese market. In a statement, BMW said the price increases will range from four to seven percent. This will only make a small dent in the 40 percent tariff being slapped on U.S. made vehicles entering China. BMW will be absorbing the remainder of the tariff for the time being.
“BMW stands for free (trade) but can’t stand still without taking actions to respond to the market changes,” said a BMW spokeswoman.
The German automaker isn't the only one to raise prices on vehicles destined to China. Reuters has learned from dealers that Mercedes-Bena has raised the price of the GLE-Class, which is built in Alabama.

After 20 years since it departed, the 8-Series is making a comeback to the BMW lineup.
The design is more dramatic than the 6-Series coupe with a long front end, "double-bubble" roof contouring, and interesting shape for the trunk lid. Inside, the center stack is oriented to the driver to have controls within easy reach. A 10.3-inch digital instrument panel, and a 12.3-inch infotainment system comes standard. A set of M sport seats are upholstered in Merino leather.
At launch, BMW will only offer the M850i xDrive for the U.S. It packs a brand new turbocharged 4.4L V8 producing 523 horsepower and 553 pound-feet of torque. An eight-speed automatic routes power to all four wheels. BMW quotes a 0-60 mph time of 3.6 seconds and a top speed limited to 155 mph. Expect other powertrains to be announced at a later date.
For the suspension, BMW utilizes a double-wishbone setup up front and a five-link axle in the rear to make the coupe feel more agile. A set adaptive dampers can adjust the overall firmness automatically. The M850i xDrive will also come with a rear-axle steering system that turns the rear wheels up to 2.5-degrees to reduce turning radius at lower speeds, while improving cornering at higher speeds.
The 2019 M850i xDrive arrives at BMW dealers this fall.

Initially available as the BMW M850i xDrive variant, the coupe makes its return to the U.S. after 20 years and writes a new chapter in the luxury sports coupe’s story of outstanding performance, beautiful design and state of the art technology.
The new luxury sports coupe will be built at the BMW Dingolfing plant in Germany, home to BMW 7 Series sedan production. The number ‘8’ in the model name indicates the new vehicle’s high-ranking status within BMW’s product range. As in the past with the BMW Z8 and with the current BMW i8, it is reserved for exceptionally sporty cars that stir the emotions. The all-new BMW 8 Series Coupe is the first key component of the Munich-based brand’s luxury segment model offensive.
The directive for the all-new BMW 8 Series Coupe’s design was to provide a thrilling driving experience. Body, powertrain and suspension were honed to achieve the agility, precision and poise expected of a top-class luxury sports coupe. The all-new BMW 8 Series Coupe was developed in parallel to the BMW M8 GTE race car, which has already proven its potential in the 2018 FIA World Endurance Championship long-distance races and in the 2018 IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship.
Exterior design: new design language gives sporting appeal a new face.
The exterior design of the all-new BMW 8 Series Coupe exudes a very modern form of sporting appeal beautifully blended with an air of exclusiveness and sensual allure. The production model lives up to the expectations engendered by the BMW Concept 8 Series first unveiled at the Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este in 2017. Its unique aura is the result of a new styling language focusing on modernity and emotional engagement.
The car’s low-slung design, an elongated silhouette with a slim window pillars, a roofline with a distinctive “double-bubble” contouring, a long wheelbase and wide track are the defining elements of the all-new BMW 8 Series Coupe’s proportions.

The luxury sports coupe’s promise of performance is visualized in dramatic effect by the elaborate, jutting design of the front of the vehicle, with large air intakes assuming an even more imposing appearance on the BMW M850i xDrive Coupe with the optional M Sport package. The BMW kidney grill showcases its increased proportions and features a hexagonal outline that widens towards the bottom and a single-piece surround that encompasses its various elements. The all-new BMW 8 Series Coupe comes features standard Full LED headlights with BMW LaserLight technology that are the slimmest headlights of any BMW model to date. Both light tubes are used to generate the daytime driving lights as well as the low and high beam, thereby creating the signature brand look at all times.
The greenhouse is sharply tapered at the rear, accentuating the muscular shoulder line. The elongated quarter windows terminate in a very tightly-angled version of the iconic Hofmeister kink “counter-swing”. The long, heavily raked rear window is a classic design feature of high performance luxury sports coupes of yesterday.
The rear end is composed of sculptured, emotive surfaces that emphasize the car’s width and low center of gravity. The slender all-LED rear light clusters extend deep into the flanks and add to the effect. The taillights light up uniformly in a distinctive ‘L’ shape. Twin exhaust tailpipes with a trapezoidal contour are positioned either side of the rear lower section.
Precise details optimize aerodynamics and weight.
An almost fully covered underbody, active air flap control with adjustable kidney grille slats and Air Curtains including Air Breathers help to reduce the aerodynamic drag of the all-new BMW 8 Series Coupe. Narrow exterior mirror bases, mounted directly on the side window weather strips help smooth the airflow.
The roof of the all-new BMW 8 Series Coupe mimics the design of the traditional sports coupes by featuring a central cut-out that recalls the “double-bubble” styling of classic racing cars.
This distinctive contouring is also available on the optional carbon-fiber-reinforced plastic (CFRP) roof which lowers the center of gravity enhancing the luxury sports coupe’s agility. Further weight savings can be achieved with the optional Carbon Package comprising air intake bars, exterior mirror caps, a rear spoiler and a rear diffuser insert all made from CFRP.
Driver-focused interior design
The interior has been designed to help the driver focus on the road ahead and enjoy the experience of driving. The car’s wide center console rises up towards the instrument panel at the front, separating the driver and front passenger areas. This center space encompasses the audio control unit and its function buttons, the air conditioning control panel and air vents as well as the freestanding and frameless Control Display, all arranged above each other in a clear, horizontally partitioned structure.

Apart from the gear selector and the iDrive Controller, the center console also accommodates the Driving Experience Control switch and the engine start/stop button, all arranged within a newly designed function cluster with active haptic feedback. The control unit for the light functions is new and now consists of buttons positioned at the bottom of the instrument panel between the steering wheel and the driver’s door. A leather M sports steering wheel with multifunction buttons and shift paddles for manual gear selection is standard.
Merino Individual Leather upholstery and folding rear seats as standard.
The newly developed sports seats offer high levels of long-distance comfort and excellent lateral support. The headrests are integrated into the backrests and can be adjusted for both height and fore/aft position. A semi-electric folding function has been included for the front seat backrests, which is activated by using a high-quality leather strap located on each seatback to facilitate convenient entry and exit for the rear passengers.
The sports seats are upholstered in standard premium Merino Individual leather with extended leather appointments. Decorative stitching in a contrasting color accentuates both the sporting contours and the rear seats’ styling as individual seats.
There are large door pockets, a roomy glove compartment, two cup-holders under the center console’s trim finisher and a large storage compartment under the armrest’s longitudinally divided covers for stowing travel accessories, beverages and other items. Thanks to the low seating position of both rear seats, it has been possible to design the head restraints as an integral part of the backrests. The rear backrest in the all-new BMW 8 Series Coupe has a 50:50 split design. The backrest sections can be folded down either individually or together to further increase cargo capacity. The folding mechanism is released by means of levers inside the cargo compartment. Automatic trunk lid operation is a standard feature on the all-new BMW 8 Series Coupe, while the Comfort Access option permits hands-free opening and closing of the trunk lid.

The standard specification for the new BMW M850i xDrive Coupe contains exclusive design features and options to enhance the driving experience. The launch of the all-new BMW M850i xDrive Coupe also marks the premiere of a new BMW TwinPower Turbo V8 engine. The latest generation of the 4.4-liter eight-cylinder engine has been radically revised with numerous detailed improvements. Two twin-scroll turbochargers with charge air cooling located within the V-shaped space between the cylinder banks, High Precision Injection, VALVETRONIC fully variable valve control and Double-VANOS variable camshaft timing all form part of the M Performance TwinPower Turbo technology, whose extensive overhaul has given a substantial boost to maximum power, torque and efficiency.
The new V8 engine serves up an enthralling soundtrack, which is enhanced by the standard flap-controlled sports exhaust system. It boasts a wonderfully versatile character that can also adapt itself to effortlessly relaxed cruising. The Driving Experience Control switch can be used to activate both extremely sporty and distinctly comfort-oriented powertrain settings. In the SPORT and SPORT+ modes, accelerator response as well as the V8 engine’s power delivery and acoustics – which take on a particularly distinctive note in the SPORT+ setting – are all configured for an exhilarating driving experience.
A new aluminium alloy has been used to increase the strength of the engine block. The wire-arc sprayed iron coating for the cylinder walls serves to reduce frictional losses. Reinforced, Grafal-coated pistons and optimized piston rings are designed to endure the stress on the crank drive that comes with the extra output and torque. To enhance engine smoothness, torsional vibration is minimized with the help of a viscous damper on the crankshaft.
Optimized power delivery, efficiency and emissions performance.
To achieve rapid combustion, the intake ports have been optimized for higher flow. The enlarged twin-scroll turbochargers and the variable valve and camshaft timing enable throttle losses during the gas-exchange cycle to be eliminated as far as possible and allow effective use of exhaust gas recirculation for lowering fuel consumption.
Electrically-controlled wastegate actuators are used to ensure an extremely quick build-up of boost pressure, while electric blow-off valves are integrated into the compressor housing to enhance the turbocharger sound during boost pressure release while at the same time as keeping emissions as low as possible in all operating conditions. The air intake manifold has been redesigned and a connection between the air ducts for both cylinder banks ensures even pulsation during gas exchange, resulting in higher torque at lower engine speeds.
The multi-hole fuel injectors are positioned centrally between the valves and spray fuel at a maximum pressure that has been increased from 2,900 psi to 5,076 psi. This optimizes both the metering of the fuel and the engine’s emissions performance. The BMW TwinPower Turbo V8 engine also takes advantage of a new ignition system and engine management.
Thermal shielding and the cooling circulation system have both undergone extensive modification. An upstream coolant radiator helps meet the high demands on the engine’s temperature management during extremely spirited driving.
The new BMW TwinPower Turbo V8 engine now generates 523 hp between 5,500 and 6,000 rpm and 553 lb-ft of torque from 1,800 to 4,600 rpm.
Eight-speed Steptronic Sport transmission with wider ratios and sportier gear shifts.
The latest improved version of the Sport automatic transmission features a weight-reducing design, a newly developed controller and a wider gear ratio spread. As a result, it is possible to achieve efficiency gains with reduced engine speeds, particularly when driving in higher gears. At the same time, the eight-speed Steptronic Sport transmission now shifts gear more sharply courtesy of optimized hydraulics control. A new generation of torsion dampers that reduce rotational forces within the powertrain help improve both driving comfort and shift smoothness. Integral twin-damper systems for isolating vibrations reduce the degree of slip at the torque converter lock-up clutch.
Shift paddles on the steering wheel are included as standard for manual gear selection, while a Launch Control function allows for accelerating from a standing start with maximum available traction.
Intelligent networking increases performance and efficiency.
The eight-speed Steptronic Sport transmission’s controller is able to adapt the shift parameters to the current driving situation by means of intelligent networking with the standard Navigation system, enabling it to take the planned route into account. Navigation data is used to downshift early, for example, when approaching an intersection in order to use engine braking to slow the car down. Likewise, the intelligent controller is able to avoid unnecessary gear shifts between two corners that follow in quick succession, making it possible to drive through at a quicker pace.
Intelligent networking increases the efficiency of the drive system in the all-new BMW 8 Series Coupe by allowing Auto Start Stop operation to adapt to suit the specific situation based on data supplied by the navigation system as well as by the cameras and radar sensors of the optional driver assistance systems. In this way, inefficient engine shutdown – for example when stopping briefly at junctions with yield signs – can be prevented. The movement of vehicles ahead is registered in order to determine the ideal moment for stopping and starting the engine.
Intelligent networking also boosts the efficiency-enhancing effect of the coasting function. When travelling at speeds between 9 – 99 mph, it ensures that the powertrain is decoupled as soon as the driver lifts off the accelerator. The vehicle can then simply coast along at idling speed and with minimized fuel consumption. This function is available with the Driving Experience Control switch set to ECO Pro mode. The switch to this “sail” mode only takes place in driving situations in which it appears worthwhile and which doesn’t compromise comfort or performance. If the accelerator is released very suddenly for instance, the powertrain stays connected in order to use the engine’s drag torque to decelerate.
Swift and precise power transfer: BMW xDrive with electronically controlled differential lock.
The BMW xDrive intelligent all-wheel-drive system has been improved for more efficient operation. With its rapid, precise and fully variable distribution of drive torque between the front and rear wheels, it maximizes traction and handling stability not just when driving in adverse road conditions, but in performance driving situations as well. Power is split in accordance with demands at all times using an electronically controlled multi-plate clutch that is networked with the powertrain and chassis systems. This results in extremely quick and exact response to any change in the driving situation.
To increase the system’s efficiency, all of the drive torque is directed to the rear wheels in situations when all-wheel drive is not needed. The xDrive system’s rear-biased set-up guarantees a driving experience for which BMW sports cars are renowned. The fact that the all-wheel-drive system has been specifically designed for performance handling is especially noticeable in the SPORT and SPORT+ modes selected via the Driving Experience Control switch.
Governed by the Driving Stability Control (DSC) system, the locking function for the standard electronically controlled rear differential improves traction and power transmission when driving on road surfaces offering differing levels of grip for the left and right rear wheels by preventing a wheel from spinning when traction is limited. The locking effect produced by the electric motor allows the drive torque to be redirected from the faster turning to the slower turning tire. This combines with the intelligent all-wheel drive and the standard Integral Active Steering to give the car all the right tools for excellent handling and remarkably agility in all driving situations.
Suspension technology sharpened with racing know-how.
The suspension technology developed for the all-new BMW 8 Series Coupe consists of a double-wishbone front axle and a five-link rear axle as well as electromechanical steering and an exceptionally powerful braking system developed exclusively for this new model. The racing know-how of BMW M GmbH was used for detailed modifications and enhancements to the overall suspension set-up. Torsion struts on the front axle and a load-bearing strut incorporated on the rear axle optimize stiffness and the connection of suspension components to the chassis. Independent rubber bearings – which increase camber stiffness – and additional damping plates at the rear axle further enhance the suspension’s baseline set-up. Special wheel hubs and wishbones allow camber values on both axles to be raised as far as possible. This significantly increases the car’s ability to put down power through high-speed corners.
The design principle of the double-wishbone front suspension makes it possible to separate steering and damper functions. As a result, high lateral acceleration forces are possible without compromising ride comfort. The car’s steering remains largely unaffected by disruptive forces caused by irregularities in the road surface. Thanks to bi-elastic bushings, the five-link rear axle guarantees precise wheel guidance and the highest degree of directional stability. In addition, effective isolation of the powertrain and suspension improves interior acoustic comfort.
Adaptive M suspension and Integral Active Steering standard.
Standard on the all-new BMW 8 Series Coupe is Adaptive M suspension with electronically controlled dampers. Both compression and rebound are adjusted continuously and independently. This facilitates finely tuned spring and damping responses, providing the driver with only relevant information about the road surface. The extremely stiff suspension springs reduce roll tendency and allow the dampers to stabilize the wheels as much as possible, avoiding traction losses caused by bumps and ruts in the road surface. The electronically controlled dampers respond adaptively to road surface conditions and driving style in order to eliminate undesired vehicle movement. Minor road damage is comfortably filtered out and narrow bumps do not induce unwanted pitching movements.
Damping characteristics can be adjusted via the Driving Experience Control switch. SPORT and SPORT+ modes activate optimal responses for maximum handling. This is noticeably different from the comfort-oriented damper setting in ECO Pro and COMFORT modes.
The standard Integral Active Steering also reduces the car’s turning circle when maneuvering, increases agility at moderate speeds and optimizes stability when changing lanes and cornering at high speeds. The system combines the electromechanical steering of the front wheels (including Servotronic function for speed-sensitive power assistance) and the variable steering ratio in the rear axle steering.
In order to achieve maximum precision during performance cornering, the steering of the all-new BMW 8 Series Coupe becomes more direct with speed. As a result, on winding roads the car feels particularly agile and easy to control. The variable steering ratio also provides additional comfort; allowing the driver to maneuver at low speeds with minimal steering wheel movement and without having to change their grip on the wheel. By contrast, at high speeds, the same steering wheel movement results in decreased steering response, optimizing turn-in precision.
Active steering of the rear wheels by up to 2.5 degrees – thanks to Integral Active Steering – considerably enhances the cornering ability of the all-new BMW 8 Series Coupe. The rear wheels are steered in the opposite direction to the front wheels at speeds up to 45 mph. At higher speeds, the steering angle of the rear wheels matches that of the front wheels, ensuring the car adopts the course determined by the driver quicker and more accurately. At the car’s traction limit, it feeds in a stabilizing steering input to complement the triggered braking intervention.
Activating SPORT or SPORT+ model via the Driving Experience Control switch gives a more direct steering response. At the same time, the maximum speed at which the rear wheels are steered in the opposite direction to the front wheels is increased to 55 mph.
Active roll stabilization
Active roll stabilization is optionally available for the all-new BMW M850i xDrive Coupe and further enhances the car’s sporty handling characteristics. Electric swivel motors on the front and rear anti-roll bars ensure fast and precise compensation for lateral forces during dynamic driving maneuvers. The system is controlled through a constant analysis of vehicle speed, lateral and longitudinal acceleration, steering wheel position, wheel and body acceleration and variation in height levels. In BMW M Performance models, active roll stabilization has an exceptionally sporty set-up and responds adaptively to changing requirements. It optimizes agility and directional stability on turn-in and helps line the car up as neatly as possible for improved acceleration out of corners. The reduced body movement also means that fast evasive maneuvers can be executed with great assurance.
At the opposite end of the spectrum, the system increases comfort when driving straight ahead by decoupling the permanent anti-roll bar connection between the wheels of an axle. By stabilizing the wheel that requires it, the system is extremely effective in counteracting disruptive forces resulting from road surface imperfections on one side of the car.
M Sport braking systems, light-alloy wheels with mixed-size high-performance tires.
Powerful braking characteristics, high thermal stability, fast response and excellent feel characterize the braking system developed for the all-new BMW 8 Series Coupe. Four-piston, fixed-calliper brakes at the front are complemented by single-piston, floating-calliper brakes at the rear. The electronic parking brake – operated by means of a button located on the center console – is integrated into the rear brake callipers. The integration of the braking system and DSC stability control guarantees precise braking response, braking control and brake boosting.
Inner-vented brake discs and model-specific brake pads are featured both at the front and rear. Directional cooling air ducts help to reduce temperatures. The friction rings of each brake disc are rivetedto an aluminum drum. Together with the use of aluminum brake callipers, this BMW-patented construction concept significantly reduces unsprung weight.
The M Sport braking system is recognizable by blue callipers featuring the M logo.
The suspension technology featured in the new BMW M850i xDrive Coupe is oriented towards maximum performance and rounded off by 20-inch M light-alloy wheels. The cast aluminum wheels are standard and come in the exclusive color Frozen Cerium Grey metallic with a high-gloss polished finish on the face. The suspension system for the all-new BMW 8 Series Coupe has been tuned – down to the finest detail – to the powertrain technology. Moreover, all the vehicle dynamics-related systems have been linked up with one another via the high-speed data transfer system called FlexRay to create an overall package geared towards maximum performance.
Constant measurement of the driving situation data by sensors forms the basis for coordinated system responses. Within a split second, the control unit integrated into the braking system and DSC is able to adapt the powertrain and suspension functions to changing situations, such as varying road surface conditions, sudden braking, spontaneous steering maneuvers and extreme acceleration. Here, the steering, four-wheel-drive system, electronically controlled differential lock and active roll stabilization are all employed to assist the stabilizing effect of brake intervention on individual wheels and adjustment of drive torque. A hierarchical control structure guarantees optimal control of the relevant actuators.
For example, to optimize directional stability when braking heavily on road surfaces with varying grip levels under the right and left-hand wheels, a steering impulse can be transmitted to inform the driver of the necessity to adjust their line. With carefully judged steering inputs on the rear axle, it is possible to counteract a tendency to oversteer or understeer. Adjustments by the active roll stabilization system will assist in enhancing stability and agility. Precisely controlled anti-roll bar swivel motors can optimize traction in fast bends. Centrally evaluated data on the driving situation optimizes the efficiency of the BMW xDrive system’s responses.
Optimized weight thanks to intelligent material use.
BMW EfficientLightweight includes the use of an intelligent material mix to optimize both weight and body/suspension rigidity. In addition to the supporting structures at the front and rear of the car, other components such as the roof, doors, hood and the front firewall of the all-new BMW 8 Series Coupe are made of aluminum. The bracing tube for the passenger compartment is made from magnesium and the center tunnel is made of CFRP. The roof and other body aerodynamic components can be specified in CFRP as an option. The front axle is made almost completely from aluminum. The rear axle features a combination of lightweight steel construction with wheel carriers and forged control arms in aluminum.
A particularly wide variety of standard and optionally available driver assistance systems marks the all-new BMW 8 Series Coupe as an extremely advanced model within its segment. The systems really come into their own when driving longer distances by relieving the strain on the driver in monotonous situations, such as traffic jams or slow-moving traffic. They enhance comfort and safety both in urban traffic and on longer trips by providing targeted assistance in complex traffic situations. The driver assistance systems process camera images as well as the data gathered by ultrasonic and radar sensors to monitor the vehicle’s surroundings, to warn of potential hazards and to minimise the risk of an accident with corrective braking or steering inputs. These integral features of the BMW Personal Co?Pilot represent the latest advances on the road to automated driving.
The BMW 8 Series Coupe is equipped with standard Cruise Control with braking function as well as Collision and Pedestrian Warning with City Braking function, the latest version of which alerts the driver when a cyclist is detected. Depending on the situation, the system can bring the vehicle to a halt to either avoid a collision or minimize its consequences.
The all-new BMW 8 Series Coupe can be optionally equipped with Active Cruise Control with Stop & Go function. It can be used at speeds up to 130 mph and maintains the desired speed while taking not only the traffic situation into account, but also the selected distance to vehicles in front. If required, the system is able to brake the car to a stop then pull away again automatically after being stationary for up to 30 seconds, meaning greater comfort in stop-start traffic. Camera images and data from a front radar system are used for distance control.
The speed limits detected by the Speed Limit Info traffic sign recognition system including No Passing Info display can be incorporated into the Active Cruise Control’s automatic regulation of the speed with an adjustment of up to 9 mph. The distance information appears in the standard Head-Up Display. This function helps the driver to keep at a predetermined distance from the vehicle ahead when cruise and distance control are not activated. A warning signal projected onto the windscreen indicates that the gap has fallen below the set distance.
Driving Assistant Professional: the complete package for comfortable and safe driving.
The optional Driving Assistant Professional offers comprehensive assistance for comfortable and safe driving. In addition to Active Cruise Control with Stop & Go function, this complete package also includes the Steering and Lane Control assistant. To allow convenient activation of the two systems, the all-new BMW 8 Series Coupe is fitted with a special button on the standard multifunction steering wheel for switching on the Active Cruise Control and Steering and lane control assistant simultaneously. A mode button can be pressed to switch to using Active Cruise Control on its own.
Another component of the Driving Assistant Professional is the Lane Keeping Assistant with Active Side Collision Protection. This is made up of the Lane Departure Warning and Lane Change Warning systems, which are active from 44 – 130 mph and 12 mph up to top speed respectively and help the driver guide the vehicle back onto the correct path with an active turn of the steering. Besides emitting visual warning signals and causing the steering wheel to vibrate, active side collision protection also uses active steering intervention to help avoid a collision. The Driving Assistant Professional also includes the evasion aid, which now also reacts to pedestrians. The Crossing Traffic Warning – which reduces the danger of a collision when maneuvering forwards towards roads that are obstructed from the driver’s view – now also includes brake intervention.
Perfect for concentrating on the road ahead: the latest-generation Head-Up Display.
The BMW Head-Up Display, which comes as standard in the all-new BMW 8 Series Coupe and projects relevant driving information onto the windscreen in the form of graphics, is another factor in the intensely focused driving experience. The latest generation of the system features a larger projection area, optimized graphics and additional content. The BMW Head-Up Display projects information directly into the driver’s field of vision where it can be assimilated without any need for them to divert their eyes from the road. This includes details of vehicle speed, speed limits and overtaking restrictions, Check Control messages, status indicators and warnings from the assistance systems, detailed route guidance and turn instructions, as well as telephone and entertainment lists. When driving with the Driving Experience Control switch in SPORT or SPORT+ mode, the Head-Up Display also indicates engine speed. Plus, there is a digital Optimum Shift Indicator as an aid for the sports-minded driver in the new BMW 8 Series Coupe.
Another item on the list of optional extras is the BMW Night Vision system comprising pedestrian and animal detection as well as a marker light. The standard Parking Assistant is able to automatically select suitable parallel parking spaces and maneuver into them. The spaces are identified by ultrasonic sensors as the vehicle drives past. Once it has been activated by simply pressing and holding a button on the center console, the system takes care of controlling the accelerator, brakes and steering as well as changing gear. In addition to this, the system can now be used for automatically maneuvering out of parallel parking spaces too. In order to do this, the driver has to first specify in which direction the parking space is to be exited by switching on the indicators on that side. By reversing and steering, the system then maneuvers the vehicle into a position from which the driver can leave the parking space with the steering turned to the given angle.
The Parking Assistant’s range of functions also includes the Reversing Assistant, which helps the driver when exiting parking spaces and maneuvering within a confined space. The system assumes the task of steering when backing up by tracing the vehicle’s last forward movements in reverse. All the driver has to do is operate the accelerator and brake pedals and monitor the vehicle’s surroundings. A distance of up to 55 yards can be covered in this way at speeds of up to 6 mph. The system is deactivated if either of these values is exceeded.
The included standard camera system is designed to afford drivers a clear all-round view through Rear, Top View, Panorama View and 3D View functions. A 360-degree image of the vehicle and its surroundings is shown on the Control Display from different perspectives. The Remote 3D View function additionally gives drivers the ability to call up a three-dimensional live image of their vehicle and its immediate vicinity on their smartphone.
The all-new BMW 8 Series Coupe comes standard with the BMW Live Cockpit Professional, which combines a new display and control concept and maximum connectivity into a superb all-round package. The latest-generation display and control concept consists of a high-resolution instrument cluster behind the steering wheel with a screen diagonal of 12.3 inches and a 10.25?inch Control Display.

Further components of the BMW Live Cockpit Professional include an adaptive navigation system, a hard-drive-based multimedia system with 20 GB of memory, two USB ports (type A and type C), plus Bluetooth and WiFi interfaces. The driver can be automatically detected and personal settings activated by using the vehicle key or the BMW Digital Key as well as by selecting a user in the Control Display and entering the correct PIN.
Drivers can benefit to the full from the car’s intelligent connectivity capabilities thanks to its built-in SIM card and the unlimited data volume. Not only does this provide access to vehicle apps such as news, weather, office and online search, it also allows customers to use Intelligent Emergency Call for automatically summoning swift assistance in an emergency and receive regular updates for the navigation system’s maps.

BMW Connected is the companion app for BMW drivers. Intelligent connectivity helps users to reach their destination easily and with minimal stress – and not only from within their car; BMW Connected is an all-embracing concept designed to seamlessly connect the driver and their smartphone with their vehicle.
At the heart of it all is the Open Mobility Cloud, which allows the app to connect the car with the customer’s digital devices. These could include the iPhone and Apple Watch, smartphones and smartwatches running the Android operating system, Alexa-compatible smart devices and Google Home. For instance, the BMW Connected app can import appointments and addresses from the customer’s calendar entries straight into the navigation system to begin route guidance. The system calculates the optimum departure time based on real-time traffic information and notifies the driver with a message on their smartphone when it is time to leave. As the vehicle is linked up via the Open Mobility Cloud, it is able to access the calculated route directly when the navigation system starts up.
The latest in key technology: the BMW Digital Key.
The BMW Digital Key employs Near Field Communication (NFC) technology to allow the all-new BMW 8 Series Coupe to be locked and unlocked from a smartphone too, dispensing with the need for a conventional car key. The smartphone simply has to be held up to the door handle to open the vehicle and, once inside, the engine can be started as soon as the phone has been placed in the Wireless Charging or smartphone tray.
Available via the BMW Connected App, the BMW Digital Key offers unrivalled flexibility, as the driver can share it with up to five other people. The BMW Digital Key will initially be available for selected NFC-capable smartphones when it is launched.
Always up to date thanks to Remote Software Upgrade.
The Remote Software Upgrade feature keeps the vehicle up to date with the latest software. All updates can be loaded over the air, similar to smartphones. The upgrades can be loaded onto a smartphone via the BMW Connected app when connected to a domestic Wi-Fi network or imported directly via the BMW’s built-in SIM card, which happens automatically for important vehicle upgrades.
