Rumorpile: Google and FCA To Begin An Autonomous Ride Sharing Service

Coming soon, an autonomous ride-sharing service using Chrysler Pacificas?

Google and Fiat Chrysler Automobiles made waves earlier this year when it was announced the two would build 100 autonomous prototypes based on the all new Pacifica Plug-In Hybrid. Now the two could be working together on a ride-sharing service using autonomous vehicles.

Bloomberg has learned from sources that Google will deploy a semi-autonomous vehicle, most likely the Pacifica possibly towards the end of 2017 for this new service. The sources go on to say that Google will need more than 100 vehicles that FCA agreed to in their original deal.

This comes on the heels of Google's announcement today that it will be spinning off their autonomous vehicle project into a new holding company called Waymo. During the press conference, CEO John Krafcik said the goal of this new company isn't to make better cars but “making better drivers."

"We've completed the first versions of these cars and will get them on the road in the near future," said Krafcik when asked about the Pacificas.

“FCA has been a wonderful partner.”

According to the Rumorpile, Toyota is working on bringing back the Venza, a car that went out of production after 2015. The original Venza did not sell very well, partially due to its wagon-like shape and also relatively high pricing.  It also lacked any off-road pretense that typically comes with a crossover.
The problem for Toyota is that there is a large Venza sized gap in their SUV lineup between the RAV-4 and Highlander. This time around, the Venza would ditch the wagon looks and instead be a true crossover along the lines of the Chevrolet Trailblazer, Honda Passport, and Ford Edge. There is a possibility that the Venza would come in only hybrid form using the same 2.5-liter setup with rear electric motor that the Highlander uses.
If the rumors prove true, you could see a new Venza hit the auto show circuit as early as 2021.

Fiat Chrysler is bringing a slew of concepts to the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas that all feature some sort of electrification.
The centerpiece of their display will be the 2020 Airflow Vision concept.  While not specifically branded as a Chrysler, the Airflow Vision does take the name of a full-size Chrysler model produced from 1934 - 1937.  FCA calls it a "sculptural design concept" that envisions the next generation of premium transportation.  The interior user experience is designed to be captivating. FCA put a lot of work into showing a sophisticated appearance that can be personalized and customized to individual needs.
The cabin offers multiple interfaces, one behind the steering wheel, two on the center console, one for the front passenger, and two more for the rear passengers. Information can be shared between the screens by swiping.  The interior is said to be the same size as the Chrysler Pacifica Plug-in and has a flat load floor. In spite of all that room, it only has 4 seats set up in a lounge chair fashion to maximize legroom, shoulder room, and storage space for each passenger. Premium suedes and leathers, along with ambient lighting make the ride a first-class experience.
The exterior of the Airflow Vision has an aggressive stance with bodywork reaching almost to the ground. The wheels hint at the use of electric motors, but no powertrain information was provided.

Rumor has it that Ford is working on a V8 powered version of their Ranger Raptor currently sold in overseas markets. Only available in other parts of the world, the current Ranger Raptor is powered by a 2.0-liter 4-cylinder diesel that produces 210 horsepower and 369 lb.-ft of torque, but a report in Wheels magazine says that Ford Australia is working with an external engineering company to swap the 2.0 diesel for a 5.0-liter V8 from the Mustang GT.  The odd thing about this is that the Ranger Raptor 5.0 would be still built with the 2.0-liter diesel under the hood and then later converted to V8 gasoline power.
Expect power to be about the same as it makes in the Australian spec Mustang GT, a healthy 455 horsepower and 410 lb.-ft of torque.
If it all comes together, the Ranger Raptor 5.0 is expected to go on sale in Australia next year, sold by Ford dealers and backed by the full 5-year warranty. For now, the Ranger Raptor remains forbidden fruit to the U.S. no matter what engine is under the hood.

    • Stockholders love Tesla because it's been on a general uptrend, certainly via the stock price, and only recently, flirting with profitability. Other than this week's NHTSA investigation, there's not been much scandal. Daimler is on a downward trend, and with increasing scandals. It's also a decade behind in the EV movement. Big difference.
    • If it drops to $3 billion that is still more than Tesla makes and stockholders love Tesla.  What matters is how much is going into EV's and autonomous  driving tech, especially for Daimler who makes so many semi-trucks, self driving is going to be huge for long haul trucks.
    • I quoted the wrong section... This is the part I wanted to quote you on... And no...Motor Trend did not cop out on anything...   EVs are REALLY REALLY smooth. THAT is the point... THAT is what YOU misinterpreted... and un-ironically...they compare an EV ride to an ICE powered isolation luxury machine that costs more to buy than real estate in certain cases...
    • Its only ugly because you dont like EVs... THAT would be a cop out on YOUR part... See what you did there?  See what I did there? This is what I got from the article: EVs are not cost effective (for most people) just yet.  (That would be a  No shyte Sherlock moment actually...no need for a MT article to point that out) But...I also got "life is full of  small inconveniences" and "capitalism lets us profit from it"  regarding charge stations.  And that one just compliments another video I saw yesterday.  I also got that EV infrastructure and battery range has improved to the point that range anxiety (at least in California...and in Quebec)  is literally a NON-ISSUE...   What I got is...at least in California...and in Quebec... that an EV of at the very least a KONA EV, one could travel decent distances and not worry about being stranded and eaten by wolves because of desolation...as haterz like to tell their tales against EVs.   Your blindness and hatred to EVs and you misread...and misinterpret.    You could read into the 1.6 liter is rough and tough because transmission...but you omit that even comparing a 2.0 KONA..."The EV is almost continuously better to drive than the gas," Reynolds said. "Its silky acceleration and right-foot response are akin to a Rolls-Royce." And to boot, the EV is SLOWER than the 1.6 gas 0-60...    You could hate on EVs, man....but at least when reading an article...please dont misinterpret  the information given.  Or at least try not to. Regardless of your feelings towards things you hate on.
