    Ford's Flex Is Still Kicking Around


    • Do the sales numbers of the Ford Flex warrant its survival?

    The Ford Flex is loved by automotive writers, their owners, and Consumer Reports which recommends the model. But with all of this good news, you would think the Flex would be a big seller. Not at all. Ford Flex Sales in December 2014 totaled 1,786 units, a 24.9 percent decrease when compared to December 2013 and well behind Ford's other three-row crossover, the Explorer. Automotive News says that the average Flex sales totaled around eight models. Pair this with no hint of a next-generation Flex anywhere, it seems the model will be heading into the sunset.

    Possibly not. Automotive News says there are two key reasons for why the Flex is still around.

    • Ford makes a nice profit on every Flex sold.
    • Flex is very popular in California. About a quarter of Flex models (around 446) were sold in the state.

    "You either love it or you hate it. It's one of our top sellers. Lease loyalty on it is very high. People lease it and then come back and get another one," said Lee Dibble, a sales manager at Vista Ford-Lincoln of Oxnard - a city near LA.

    "It's becoming a regional product that we're embracing as such," said Matt Zuehlk, marketing manager for the Flex and Explorer.

    Helping the Flex is the sister model, the Explorer. With monthly sales around 20,000 mark, this helps reduce the costs and margins on both models.

    As for why we haven't heard any hint of a next-generation, Zuehlk explained that the refresh done in 2013, "was progressive enough to carry us forward for the interim."

    I would not call the 2013 refresh a progressive update that will carry it forward. Is Ford that stupid to not see that they have a product that fills a need but still needs to update it.

     

    Most of the Flex around Washington state are the AWD models. I agree that owners love them and my niece and her husband have an AWD model that they love.

     

    Just needs a major update to match the rest of the family. Maybe at least a major refresh that is noticeable.

    Probably one of the best of all of the Ford crossovers, and likely the only one I would consider for myself... even over the Explorer.

     

    Ford is moving all of their crossovers to new platforms starting in the next round of refreshes, so that may be why we haven't heard anything yet.  I hope it does get a direct replacement though.  At its peak, if you considered it just a Taurus Wagon (which it is), it was about 30% of combined Taurus/Flex sales.  That's pretty good for a big wagon these days.

    Ford sold about 24,000 Flex last year, so that number you gave in the article is more of a monthly figure.

    I wanted a lot to get another Ford when we traded our Taurus X and got the Chrysler Town and Country last month. I gave Ford just about every chance I could, I even looked at used

    I had trouble finding a Flex with only just the equipment I wanted. Or certain colors etc. that is part of the deal when you are looking at low volume models.

    The Flex was actually leasing better than the Explorers for a bit. Refresh I Flex has a better second row. I like that the Flex is not jacked up so high. AWD is a great option. I liked the exterior in 13. I had tried to find one with the black wheel package built the way I'd wanted, but the prices loaded just were hard to justify. The used ones too, couldn't find a decent used one with low miles for a decent price.

    I think in the end I got a little ford exhaustion, and I think the interior was looking dated to me. I don't like the side strakes either, or door panels that wrap under the bottom of the door.

    I think Ford should come out with a new one, make the price a little more competitive to minivans, and make the interior / cargo a little larger. You could still have a funk wagon theme but sex it up and make it lean and sexy, a real minivan alternative. And NOT make it look like all their other melted stuff these days.

    We probably should have got the flex since I'm not huge on the van, the way it drives, the flex drives way better.

    Maybe I'm the strange one, but I happen to like, nah, love the Flex. It's quirky, yet very useful. That boxy shape is quite easy to find. Always thought it had a 50s vibe to me, not sure....

     

    Not a big SUV guy, but I like this one......

    The leases on them right now are fantastic.  I was pricing them out yesterday due to this topic... you can get a loaded Ecoboost AWD Platinum with 15,000 miles a year for about $460 a month

    That makes total sense Drew. Tie it into the Taurus family as their official wagon and move it forward.

     

    As I was saying... this is why the Flex is still around and why it should continue.

    Flex also has a higher transaction price than Taurus.

     

     

    Ford should do a Police Interceptor Wagon!

    Twin Turbo V6 Wagon for the police to round up all the rowdy teens. lol I could see people who miss the Dodge RT Wagon going for this.

    a twin turbo wagon like this is neat.

     

    moving 20-40k a year of this type of thing should be enough to justify keeping it.

     

    When i was pricing leases a couple months ago, they were going about 400 for just an SEL with a thing or two on them.  That price for the ecoboost one is not a bad deal.
