    Last US Taurus Rolls off the Line

      End of the line for a pioneering nameplate

    Over 8 Million Ford Taurus cars have been built over the years as U.S. Taurus production came to a close yesterday in Chicago.   The Taurus was first introduced at the 1985 Los Angeles Auto Show. The original Taurus changed the design landscape for family cars in the U.S. from a traditional boxy shape to a very rounded aerodynamic one. Offered in sedan and wagon variants, the popular model became the best selling car in America by 1992.  In 1989, the SHO was introduced, a 220 horsepower V6 engine provided by Yamaha.  There was a two-year pause from 2006 to 2008 when the model was called the Ford Five Hundred. 

    While the Taurus is ending in the U.S. an unrelated Taurus continues production in China.  The Chinese Taurus was introduced in 2016 and is based on an extended Ford Fusion platform. 

    Though production of the Taurus has ended in Chicago, Ford is investing $1 billion to expand their Chicago Assembly Plant and Chicago Stamping plant to get ready for the 2020 Ford Explorer , Ford Police Interceptor, and Lincoln Aviator.  Ford is replacing or updating 75% of its U.S. lineup by the end of 2020.

    Good riddance. A storied nameplate, but this thing was long past it's sale-by date. Ford is foolish for not making a new one, however.

    Well I was going to upvote your comment, Drewbert, but C&G says I've run out of f**ks to give, so I will type this out instead.  That Chinese Taurus looks great, shame Ford's U.S. plans did not include it.  It could have matched the grace of Chevy's final, beautiful Impala.

    I had an 89 and 99 SHO, two of my fave cars I had ever.  I like the 2010+ ones, but the interior was a bunker, not as much room as it should have had, and it didn't drive amazing.

    I was never a Taurus admirer. Even the SHO of 1989.  Its true that I really didnt recognize and I wasnt really knowledgeable of the SHO's capabilities.  I just never really took to it. 

    I was more into the 1989 Turbo Trans Am, 1989 Turbo Grand Prix and from Ford's own Thunderbird SC of the same year, when the SHO made its debut.

    In 1986 when the Taurus came out, I didnt even realize what a game changer it was for the industry. Because I dont think I really cared if it had rounded looks rather than the boxy cars that were.  In fact, I actually preferred the boxy cars of the day rather than the rounded "aerodymanic" look of the Taurus.

    When Robocop came out, I didnt realize they used the Taurus for its "futuristic" look. I thought they used the Taurus for satirical purposes like the rest of the movie's dialogue and portrayals.  I even preferred the looks of the 6000 SUX over the Taurus fully knowing that the 6000 SUX car was just a shoddy built parody of a car in the vein of National Lampoons Vacation Family Truckster...

    And then when the really really oval one came out...:yuck:

    Even with the Yamaha V8, (THEN, I knew about the SHO), I preferred the supercharged  3.8 Grand Prix. Coupe or Sedan.  Olds Intrigue too I preferred.

    W-Body Cutlass Supreme and GP for me for the rounded, aerodynamic look for the mid to late 1980s instead of the Taurus.

    This gen Taurus/Ford 500, well, it stayed too long without being updated. And the Edge and Explorer are picking up where the Taurus left off . So...maybe its best this way for all of us...

    The original Taurs was good, gen 2 wasn't much of a departure and they just didn't do enough in the 90s with it to keep it competitive with the Camry and Accord.  That early 2000s 4th gen was woefully uncompetitive, a bad rental car only.  When it came back it was too big.  This car had maybe 10 good years, and 20 years of mismanagement.

    We had a fully-loaded 20-yr old '95 wagon here for about a year & a half. What struck me was that it wasn't a large car externally, but had a ton of room inside. We liked driving it but when the transaxle started going, it wasn't worth repairing value-wise.

    as they tended to do in that car.  It's probably the largest single reason you don't see the older vintages of Taurus around much anymore. The 4-speeds failed.

    I really like where Ford is now in many ways...and love the vintage Ford Stuff. But a whole lot of stuff in the middle was pretty marginal...including most of the Taurus products. I have a soft spot for whatever reason for the current gen SHO but that is about it.

    ONWARD....the New Ford will be better than the Ford of two years ago.

    @Drew Dowdell Yeah, back then, all of the cars looked incredibly close to their street counterparts. That spread of late 90's-early 2000's was I would argue the last great era of NASCAR racing and car template designs.

    They've gone back to that after the disaster of the CoT(Car of Tomorrow). They're much more like the factory cars again.

    I would disagree with that. They're more unique to the manufacturer, imo.

      Previous Page Next Page You might not be able to tell that the 2021 Ford F-150 is all new. The shape, basic dimensions, and ladder-frame chassis are the same as the outgoing F-150. But you need to look a bit deeper to find the changes and new features that the blue oval hopes keeps their truck on top.
      PowerBoost? PowerBoost.
      What PowerStroke is for diesels, PowerBoost is Ford's brand name for the new hybrid system available on the F-150. The system is comprised of the 3.5L EcoBoost V6, 35kW (47 hp) electric motor mounted in the transmission, and a 1.5-kwh lithium-ion battery pack. No details were given on power output or fuel economy, but Ford is targeting 700 miles on a single tank of gas and max towing of 12,000 pounds.
      Generator? I Have My Truck.
      Pro Power Onboard turns the F-150 into a generator to power various electrical devices no matter where you are. It comes standard on the Hybrid providing 2.4kW, or 7.2kW via an option. All engines except the base 3.3L V6 get it as a option that provides 2.0kW. There are two 120-volt, 20-amp outlets for the 2.0 and 2.4kW systems, and 7.2kW system boasts four 12-volt outlets and a 240-volt, 30-amp outlet for higher draw equipment.
      You Want Tech!? We Have It and A Kitchen Sink as Well
      Ford is going all-in on offering all sorts of tech on the 2021 F-150. It begins up front with the introduction of Sync 4 that brings forth faster processing power, better voice recognition, and over-the-air updates. An eight-inch screen will be standard on lower-end models, while a 12-inch screen is available on XLT and higher-trims. The larger screen also brings forth wireless CarPlay and Android Auto. 
      Next up comes CoPilot 360 2.0, Ford's suite of active safety features. All models boast pre-collision assist with automatic braking, pedestrian detection, and automatic high beams. Move up to the XLT and above and you'll get lane-keep assist, parking sensors, reverse brake-assist, and a post-impact braking system. 
      The biggest tech feature for the F-150 won't be out till sometime next year. That is Active Drive Assist which Ford announced recently for the Mustang Mach-E. Active Drive Assist is similar to Cadillac's Super Cruise where it allows for hands-off driving on divided highways that have been mapped by Ford - over 100,000 miles of these roadways in the U.S. and Canada according to automaker. The system also comes with a driver-facing camera that tracks eye and head movement to make sure the driver is paying attention. This system will be available via an OTA update, provided the F-150 is equipped with a prep kit that includes hardware to enable another safety feature, Intersection Assist that prevents drivers from accidentally pulling in front of oncoming traffic during a left-turn.
      Other Details to Know
      All engines carry over from the previous generation, which includes the 3.3L V6, 2.7L EcoBoost, 3.5L EcoBoost, 5.0L V8, and 3.0L PowerStroke Diesel. No more six-speed automatic, all engines now come paired with an ten-speed automatic. Ford will be offering eleven different grille designs, and fourteen wheel choices - ranging in size from 17 to 22-inches. The front seats can recline up to 180-degrees. Center console can transform into a work-area for a 15-inch laptop by opening and folding the lid. The transmission selector on floor console models folds down flat to make room. We'll likely get more details dripped out before the 2021 F-150 arrives at dealers this fall.

      Class-exclusive Max Recline Seats available on King Ranch, Platinum and Limited models provide ultimate comfort during downtime. Max Recline Seats fold flat to nearly 180 degrees, with the bottom cushion rising to meet the back cushion and the upper back support rotating forward up to 10 degrees for maximum comfort.
      Available lockable, fold-flat rear storage adds a vault to the F-150 that extends the width of the rear seats.       Most powerful in its class
      The all-new 3.5-liter PowerBoost full hybrid V6 powertrain is targeted to deliver the most torque and horsepower of any light-duty full-size pickup. Available on every trim level from F-150 XL to Limited, the no-compromise PowerBoost system – the only light-duty full-size pickup to offer a full hybrid – adds instant electric torque to Ford’s 3.5-liter EcoBoost® V6. It is targeting an EPA-estimated range of approximately 700 miles on a single tank of gasᶧ and will deliver at least 12,000 pounds of available maximum towing – equivalent to the average weight of 43 NFL linemen.
      PowerBoost combines Ford’s proven EcoBoost engine and 10-speed SelectShift® automatic transmission with a 35-kilowatt (47-horsepower) electric motor integrated into the transmission, as well as software calibrated specially for truck use, including drive modes like tow/haul mode to help customers better manage towing heavy trailers.
      The electric motor applies regenerative braking energy capture to help recharge the 1.5-kilowatt-hour lithium-ion battery. The battery is efficiently packaged underneath the truck, leaving the cab and cargo box of PowerBoost F-150 as spacious for passengers and cargo as other comparably equipped F-150 models. Pro Power Onboard is available with a 2.0-kilowatt output on optional gas engines, while PowerBoost-equipped F-150 comes standard with 2.4 kilowatts of output or an optional 7.2 kilowatts of output. Power is accessible through in-cabin outlets and up to four cargo bed-mounted 120-volt 20-amp outlets, with a 240-volt 30-amp outlet on the 7.2-kilowatt version.       Most connected F-150 ever

The technology builds on more than 10 years of SYNC innovation by helping minimize distractions with hands-free voice control as well as core features such as making phone calls and selecting music.       Ford offers complimentary technology including 911 Assist® that automatically alerts emergency responders in the event of an accident, and FordPass, a mobile device app that allows Ford drivers to start or unlock their vehicle from a distance, as well as control new truck-focused features like Zone Lighting, Trailer Theft Alert, Trailer Light Check and Pro Power Onboard.
      Driver-assist technologies
      All-new F-150 offers the latest driver-assist features as part of Ford Co-Pilot360™ 2.0. More features are now standard on XL, including Pre-Collision Assist with Automatic Emergency Braking and Pedestrian Detection to help avoid a possible collision with another vehicle or a pedestrian, rearview camera with dynamic hitch assist, auto high-beam headlamps and auto on/off headlamps.

      Previous Page Next Page You might not be able to tell that the 2021 Ford F-150 is all new. The shape, basic dimensions, and ladder-frame chassis are the same as the outgoing F-150. But you need to look a bit deeper to find the changes and new features that the blue oval hopes keeps their truck on top.
      PowerBoost? PowerBoost.
      What PowerStroke is for diesels, PowerBoost is Ford's brand name for the new hybrid system available on the F-150. The system is comprised of the 3.5L EcoBoost V6, 35kW (47 hp) electric motor mounted in the transmission, and a 1.5-kwh lithium-ion battery pack. No details were given on power output or fuel economy, but Ford is targeting 700 miles on a single tank of gas and max towing of 12,000 pounds.
      Generator? I Have My Truck.
      Pro Power Onboard turns the F-150 into a generator to power various electrical devices no matter where you are. It comes standard on the Hybrid providing 2.4kW, or 7.2kW via an option. All engines except the base 3.3L V6 get it as a option that provides 2.0kW. There are two 120-volt, 20-amp outlets for the 2.0 and 2.4kW systems, and 7.2kW system boasts four 12-volt outlets and a 240-volt, 30-amp outlet for higher draw equipment.
      You Want Tech!? We Have It and A Kitchen Sink as Well
      Ford is going all-in on offering all sorts of tech on the 2021 F-150. It begins up front with the introduction of Sync 4 that brings forth faster processing power, better voice recognition, and over-the-air updates. An eight-inch screen will be standard on lower-end models, while a 12-inch screen is available on XLT and higher-trims. The larger screen also brings forth wireless CarPlay and Android Auto. 
      Next up comes CoPilot 360 2.0, Ford's suite of active safety features. All models boast pre-collision assist with automatic braking, pedestrian detection, and automatic high beams. Move up to the XLT and above and you'll get lane-keep assist, parking sensors, reverse brake-assist, and a post-impact braking system. 
      The biggest tech feature for the F-150 won't be out till sometime next year. That is Active Drive Assist which Ford announced recently for the Mustang Mach-E. Active Drive Assist is similar to Cadillac's Super Cruise where it allows for hands-off driving on divided highways that have been mapped by Ford - over 100,000 miles of these roadways in the U.S. and Canada according to automaker. The system also comes with a driver-facing camera that tracks eye and head movement to make sure the driver is paying attention. This system will be available via an OTA update, provided the F-150 is equipped with a prep kit that includes hardware to enable another safety feature, Intersection Assist that prevents drivers from accidentally pulling in front of oncoming traffic during a left-turn.
      Other Details to Know
      All engines carry over from the previous generation, which includes the 3.3L V6, 2.7L EcoBoost, 3.5L EcoBoost, 5.0L V8, and 3.0L PowerStroke Diesel. No more six-speed automatic, all engines now come paired with an ten-speed automatic. Ford will be offering eleven different grille designs, and fourteen wheel choices - ranging in size from 17 to 22-inches. The front seats can recline up to 180-degrees. Center console can transform into a work-area for a 15-inch laptop by opening and folding the lid. The transmission selector on floor console models folds down flat to make room. We'll likely get more details dripped out before the 2021 F-150 arrives at dealers this fall.

It is available in both bench and captain’s chair seating configurations on XL to Limited. Knowing many customers prefer a console shifter, Ford has created a stowable unit for F-150, which easily folds into the center console with the push of a button and allows full access to the large work surface when in park.
      Class-exclusive Max Recline Seats available on King Ranch, Platinum and Limited models provide ultimate comfort during downtime. Max Recline Seats fold flat to nearly 180 degrees, with the bottom cushion rising to meet the back cushion and the upper back support rotating forward up to 10 degrees for maximum comfort.
      Available lockable, fold-flat rear storage adds a vault to the F-150 that extends the width of the rear seats. It’s as easy as lifting the bottom cushion of the rear seat, dropping valuables in and locking them away for safe keeping. Great for storing long items like fishing rods or blueprints, it even has a divider to keep gear organized.

It is targeting an EPA-estimated range of approximately 700 miles on a single tank of gasᶧ and will deliver at least 12,000 pounds of available maximum towing – equivalent to the average weight of 43 NFL linemen.
      PowerBoost combines Ford’s proven EcoBoost engine and 10-speed SelectShift® automatic transmission with a 35-kilowatt (47-horsepower) electric motor integrated into the transmission, as well as software calibrated specially for truck use, including drive modes like tow/haul mode to help customers better manage towing heavy trailers.
      The electric motor applies regenerative braking energy capture to help recharge the 1.5-kilowatt-hour lithium-ion battery.       The COVID-19 pandemic has basically brought most of the world to halt. Orders to stay at home, businesses either having workers to their work from home or closing down, and unemployment skyrocketing is causing the economy to crater. There are efforts to try and jump-start the economy such as $1,200 stimulus checks. But an executive at Ford wants to see a return of a "cash for clunkers" like program.
      “We think some level of stimulus somewhere on the other side of this would help not only the auto industry and our dealers, which are a huge part of our overall economy, but will help the customers as well,” said Mark LaNeve, Ford’s vice president of U.S. marketing, sales and service to Bloomberg.
      “Cash for clunkers was very effective at that time. It would be nice to think we could have something equally as effective for 2020 when we get out of this because it was a great program.”
      According to LaNeve, internal discussions are taking place at Ford about doing a similar program and there are plans to bring the Government in to these talks.
      When asked by Automotive News about this, Ford spokeswoman Rachel McCleery said, "The auto industry is America’s economic engine.We are encouraging Congress to look at a variety of ways to drive job creation, increase demand, support customers and provide long-term stability for the entire auto ecosystem."
      A brief refresher on the Cash for Clunkers program. In 2009, the U.S. Government introduced a billion initiative called the Car Allowance Rebate System, which gave a voucher worth between $2,900 and $4,500 to anyone replacing a vehicle newer than 1984. Their old vehicle would be taken away and disposed of. The program was nicknamed Cash for Clunkers.
      On the surface, the program was a success. Within first month, all of the funds were exhausted. This prompted the U.S. congress infuse an addition two billion into the program, which would be all gone within 17 days. But begin to look deeper and the results are mixed. In 2012, a study published in the Quarterly Journal of Economics described the program as being a bit of a wash,
      "...the effect of the program on auto purchases is almost completely reversed by as early as March 2010 — only seven months after the program ended.”
      Other studies have come to the same conclusion.
      There's also the question of how many perfectly good used cars were taken off the road due to the program.

    • I would have never thought that until it went FWD.  Thank you.  So, even when RWD, it was an X body. I vaguely remember all the FWDs GMs on this chassis had 2.5L Iron Dukes and the rudimentary 2.8 V6s, if I'm not mistaken.  Neither engine was in it for the long haul, with each plagued by expensive issues after time.  What a difference a year could make.  If you got the '77 model with a 231 c.i., you got an "odd firing" one.  If you got next year's model, you got an "even firing" one.  I have no idea what the longevity of carbureted 231 c.i. engines of that decade was.  I had one in the '80s and it surpassed 170,000 miles, only coughing up a timing chain along the way.  With it being a non-interference engine, the valvetrain suffered no damage.
    • Well, the stock Pirelli P-Zero Neros are finally gone.  I kept the two good ones so I can hopefully sell them to some poor sucker(s) that needs them for a lease return.  I was able to get a set of four tires installed with warranty for less than it would have cost me to replace the two Pirelli's with sidewall bubbles, one of which was bad and the other of which was very bad. I always said I would not buy Chinese tires but I did it anyway.  My only excuse = Lease.  I will say even though they were very cheap, they had surprisingly good reviews.  They are Nankang NS-25's.  My impression after two days with them:  much quieter than the 24k mile Pirelli's that had started to get quite loud before 15K miles, seem to handle at least as well on dry pavement and due to the softer sidewalls of a non-run flat they also seem to take the bumps much better.  Only downside so far seems to be that they tramline much more.  First drive on the grooved cement interstate had the car squirming around following the grooves.  Not severe or concerning but definitely noticeable.  It will be interesting to see how they do in rain and snow.
    • The old L03 305 is now out.  Threw a cam and springs in the LS1 and it is now ready to go in.  My torque converter finally arrived a couple of days ago after a 6 week wait.  It will be interesting to see how long the trans and/or rear end last.  My budget is already blown so no money for upgrades this year unless I can find a used 28 spline 3.42 rear out of a 1990-92 F-body.
    • The van is in good shape now.  The replacement radio still hasn't come in due to the COVID shutdowns putting them behind but the only thing that doesn't work is the nav and since it has Android Auto, we just use that when necessary. Only possible after effect of the crash is it seems to make a lot of tire noise now.  It had the winter tires on it when it was hit and they replaced both driver side as well as the passenger front since the van was pushed up a curb when hit.  The factory tires are the ones that are loud and I don't recall them being loud when we removed them in the fall.  Either there is a bad wheel bearing or two or the noisy tires were on the rear of the car and not as noticeable until I rotate them to the front.  Too much tread left to replace them, though.  I'll have the dealership check the wheel bearings whenever I get to take it back in for the Radio swap. After several COVID induced reschedules, the court case is finally being heard next week via teleconference.
    • According to the '77 brochure, the Phoenix had the 231 V6 standard, and the Iron Duke 151, the 305 V8 and 350 V8 as options. Also standard was a 3-spd manual on the column, with a 3 on the floor and a THM optional.
