    Rumorpile: No V6 Mustang For 2018


    • Good-bye Mustang V6

    The Mustang is expected to get a refresh in 2018 and there is a possibility that the V6 engine will be dropped. 

    This information comes to us from the Mustang6G.com's forums where a dealership employee posted the order guide for the 2018 Mustang. The guide revealed that the V6 engine order code was marked as “invalid.” Dropping the V6 would make the 2.3L EcoBoost the new base engine, which is close in terms of horsepower to the V6 (310 vs. 300). 

    The order guide also reveals that the 2018 Mustang will get a 10-speed automatic and a set of MagneRide adaptive dampers as options.

    Hate to see the V6 go, but honestly, why should Ford spend a lot of time and capital getting another 30hp out of it, while offering it as a base engine that generates little ROI, when they can easily get another 50hp plus out of the next gen I4 GTDI.

    They could also offer several tunes of GTDI, in front of that 10 speed.  And I also love how Ford will offer chassis choices through staged performance pack options.  Very nice.  Not one size fits all, after all.  Some automakers don’t get that.

    Ford does a much better job at providing buyers options on the Mustang than Dodge does with the Challenger or Chevrolet does with the Camaro.

    That is one thing I like about the modern Ford motor company....lots of ways to set up a Fiesta, Focus or Fusion as well!

    Compared with the comparable products from Toyota such as the 86 and the Celica, which have virtually nothing you can change on them to make them suit your needs....or the God awful Nissan line up....or Kia...or Hyundai...

    A Mustang hybrid?

     

    Nope. Never. They can make an EV if they want. But the Mustang is really another car that is part of a dying breed. Musclecars as they used to be are on the verge of extinction, and true sports cars are also feeling it.

     

    I think what we are going to see is model/nameplate consolidation. There's just too many models in some cases for many automakers. If they make mass-market EV's, which usually require their own, specific chassis to be great, they will have to consider killing off whatever that fits the same bill but drinks gas.

    If Ecoboost is so great as Ford says, why is there no Ecoboost V6 in the Mustang?  They could do a 300 hp Ecoboost four, a 400 hp Ecoboost six, and a 500+ hp Ecoboost V8.  There is really no need for a naturally aspirated engine anymore.

    I think Ford probably really does want to have the 2.7 in the Mustang, but probably customer research is telling them that the American pony car buyer expects a V8 as the upgrade option.

     

    I don't know how Ford managed otherwise in their trucks, but they've converted 60% of their truck buyers to EB.

    I'm wondering if the next-gen Mustang will be EB only, atleast anything not directly a variant of Ford Performance.

    I could see the 3.0TT be a probably replacement of the Coyote. And you know what, apart from sound, it might be a better engine for a lighter Mustang (hoping D6 brings lighter weight).

    But then will the Mustang then go through the endless march of making products larger or more upmarket every generation?

    I guess that is not a hypothetical. The 2.3 being offered was a experiment to see whether people would forgo a V6 and pary more for it to get the unlocks for option packages. And on paper, it compares to, rather as if by design, the German coupes which all over turbo 4's standard. No other coupes are viable besides established members like the Miata or crosstown rivals from GM or Mopar. 

    And the Mustang being a world car meant the EcoBoost was going into the Mustang no matter what.

    Well CAFE will force the Coyote V8 out, and the GT or whatever they call it will have to have an eco boost 6.   But Ford came up with Ecoboost at least 6 years ago and still no Ecoboost V8.  Couldn't they pair up a couple 2.3 ecoboosts and make a 4.6 liter ecoboost V8 with 550 hp for the Mustang?  But it could just be a price point thing too, the desire for Mustangs that cost above $45,000 could be so tiny that an ecoboost V8 would be too expensive and not sell.  But consider that 2.3 ecoboost 4 makes the same horsepower as a 2010 V8 Mustang, so they don't really need the V8 to deliver the expected performance of a $30-40k sports car.

    There is a huge part of the Mustang buyers pool that demands a V8, this will be one of the last cars offered with a V8 IMHO.

    They put an ecoboost in their bread and butter F150. If that doesn't say they are confident, nothing else will.

    Perhaps for 4 years, but I wouldn't bank on regulations severely dropping because what if they don't.  You still have to plan for what is on the table now.

    How many countries is the Mustang sold in?  I am pretty sure they sell it outside of the USA, and regulations exist there.  There are 4 or 5 European countries thinking of banning gasoline powered cars after 2025, and Europe is Ford's 2nd biggest market.

    As I posted here about the new Europe EV charging system, I think if they want the Mustang to live on and grow, they need an EV model more than a Turbo V8.

    More and more countries in the major markets are pushing for the cleaner EV solution and no matter what Trump trys here, the cat is out of the bag in regards to EV's and what they can do, so like it or not, I have little faith that the EPA will get reduced or closed down. This is not going to go away or stop others from pushing the electric agenda.

    Plus auto's like the Nio EP9 are going to force people to rethink the Mustang and Camaro.

    With a proper range and power, I could see the pony cars going this route.

    Existing auto's on the road would be allowed so you are not looking at a pure ban on using petro. With that said 5 European countries lead by Germany is looking at 2030 where ALL AUTO's would have to be EV, Petro would be banned in new auto's unless it could be a hybrid certified as PEV Zero. Example is a Chevy Volt is a PEV Zero auto.

    So yes, we are looking at a future of auto's being EV or PEV Zero Hybrid.

    That is the discussion as of right now and of course everything is up for debate since nothing is in firm written form and signed off yet.

    Brexit will play into this, but again, I think some of the political leadership and initiative will come in the form of cities.  You would not think so looking at them, but Paris has a population density twice that of NYC. Cars create more of a problem in cities largely built before the automobile in Europe than they do in the US.

    Also, the younger generation has little sympathy for repair bills and complexity, and electric cars will be inherently more simple to maintain.  Once a charger network is in place, convenience will bring in electric cars, just like the convenience of using ones own automobile killed off passenger trains in the USA.

    Electric is inevitable, once people get over that idea, things will be a lot smoother.

    The other thing to consider is that even if the EPA is cut by Trump, California is the tail wagging the dog in terms of emissions regulations, and given their love of the automobile and highway usage, those regs are not going away any time soon.

      I haven't really started a running thread for the new car yet so here it is. I think I owned the car for 8 days when I had my windows tinted 20% all the way around. I cannot stand driving a car w/o tint or the look of a vehicle w/o tint.
      This is about the only "before" picture I have of it.

      Only a few days and $270 later...
      There was actually one thing I bought prior to buying a car that I wanted in my next vehicle... a dash cam. After the accident and knowing that had I not had a witness stop and give their side of the story it could have been a hell hole of he-said she-said.. So I did a little research and bought a Spytec A119 w/ the GPS(you can get it w/o the GPS). Super clean and muuuuch easier install than I expected. The only wires exposed are coming from the center console down and then again from the headliner to the cam itself. The rest is completely hidden.


      A view from the driver's seat... I don't see it at all. That's exactly what I wanted to keep it from being a distraction.

      This past week I finally ordered and received my wheels and tires. This is the first vehicle I've ever actually gone through with changing them as I've always wanted to on all of my vehicles.
      I went with a 18x8 Konig Oversteer wrapped in a 225/45ZR18 Continental ExtremeContact DW. I'll be using the OE setup for the winter months.
      I'll get better pictures of the wheels when I get home.

      OE wheel/tire combo = 47lbs

      New wheel/tire combo = 42.5lbs

       
      I think the only other thing that I would really like to do is wrap the chrome door outline in black or a black chrome.

One of them listed was a Buick Regal and it is believed to be the GS. The document also reveals the GS will only come with an automatic (a nine-speed). We still don't know how much horsepower the Regal GS will be packing. The 3.6L V6 offers between 305 to 335 horsepower depending on the model.
      We also learned what the Regal GS could look like. China Car News got their hands on photos showing off the Chinese-spec Regal GS that will be debuting this week at the Shanghai Auto Show. It looks to be featuring a more aggressive body kit, uniquely styled five-spoke wheels, and GS badging. It should be noted the Regal in the pictures is the sedan variant and that it will come powered by a turbocharged 2.0L four-cylinder.

      Ford has introduced another member of their police interceptor fleet with the Police Responder Hybrid Sedan (catchy name). The automaker claims this is pursuit-rated hybrid police car.
      Based on the Fusion Hybrid sedan, Ford has done a bit of work to make it ready for the various hardships that police vehicles go through - prolong periods of idling, stop-and-go driving, traveling at high speed over long distances, and driving over obstacles. 
      Under the hood is an Atkinson-cycle, 2.0L four-cylinder paired with an electric motor and lithium-ion battery. The powertrain has been calibrated to allow the vehicle to run in battery-only mode up to 60 mph and provide maximum performance when needed. The Police Responder Hybrid Sedan will also get a combined 38 mpg, which is more than double the combined figure for the Police Interceptor sedan. Ford estimates police forces will save $3,900 in fuel costs per year (assuming gas prices hang around $2.50 per gallon).
      The Police Responder Hybrid Sedan will be making their debuts in Los Angeles and New York (we're guessing they have placed some orders for the model). Ford says the order books will open this spring, with deliveries following next summer.

      Ford partners with cities
      Ford sells the most police vehicles in the United States, with 63 percent market share. The company has been partnering with cities on custom law enforcement vehicles since the days of the Model T.
      The Police Responder Hybrid Sedan will help cities decrease emissions and offers the potential for significant fuel savings, both while driving and while idling. While driving, Ford’s patented hybrid technology is projected to provide EPA-estimated combined gas mileage of 38 miles per gallon – more than twice that of today’s Police Interceptor with 3.7-liter V6 with EPA-estimated 18 mpg combined. Actual mileage will vary. Final EPA-estimated ratings are not yet available. 
      While idling, the Police Responder Hybrid Sedan’s lithium-ion battery helps power the high electrical loads of a police vehicle, reducing engine run time and saving an estimated 0.27 gallons of fuel per hour. Police Responder Hybrid Sedan customers could see nearly $3,900 a year in potential fuel savings per vehicle relative to the Police Interceptor, if a police vehicle is driven 20,000 miles per year, runs two shifts per day, 365 days per year, idles 4.9 hours per 8-hour shift, and is fueled at an average gas price of $2.50/gallon. The Ford Police Responder online fuel calculator enables customers to determine how much they may potentially save.
      The new vehicle will be the first hybrid sedan with full pursuit capabilities. That means the car is certified by police agencies to be tough enough to handle police pursuits for longer periods at different speeds and over obstacles such as curbs and flooded intersections.
      The Police Responder Hybrid Sedan uses an efficient Atkinson-cycle 2.0-liter engine with an electric motor fed by an advanced lithium-ion battery. The hybrid is calibrated for law enforcement’s unique duty cycle and will run in battery-only mode up to 60 mph. The car automatically switches to maximum performance – with the engine and battery working at peak acceleration levels – when needed.
      “Our mission to create safe and healthy communities in Los Angeles is achieved through sustainable approaches in community policing, and that includes embracing new technologies,” said Charlie Beck, Los Angeles Police Department Chief. “Patrol vehicles are a police officer’s office, and we expect them to not only be economically and environmentally efficient, but also an effective tool for fighting crime in major metropolitan areas.”
      The Police Responder Hybrid Sedan can be ordered this spring and will be delivered to police departments nationwide next summer.

      The all-new Ford Police Responder Hybrid Sedan – making its debut in Los Angeles and New York – is the industry’s first pursuit-rated hybrid police car. In addition, Ford is delivering:

      As growing urban populations are overwhelming transportation systems and compromising air quality, first-time car buyers – including 50 percent of U.S. millennials – say they are interested in purchasing an electric car, according to a poll conducted by the Consumer Federation of America.
      Ford is at the forefront of driving electric vehicle technology and improving costs on batteries and motors for hybrids, plug-in hybrids and fully electric vehicles. As the company focuses on vehicles that deliver improved performance – such as the F-150 Hybrid with powerful towing and payload capacity plus the ability to operate as an on-board generator – Ford expects sales of hybrids, plug-in hybrids and fully electric vehicles to dramatically increase during the next decade.
      In fact, Ford predicts the auto industry will offer customers more hybrids, plug-in hybrids and fully electric vehicles than gasoline-powered vehicles within the next 15 years.  
      Ford partners with cities
      Ford sells the most police vehicles in the United States, with 63 percent market share. The company has been partnering with cities on custom law enforcement vehicles since the days of the Model T.
      The Police Responder Hybrid Sedan will help cities decrease emissions and offers the potential for significant fuel savings, both while driving and while idling. While driving, Ford’s patented hybrid technology is projected to provide EPA-estimated combined gas mileage of 38 miles per gallon – more than twice that of today’s Police Interceptor with 3.7-liter V6 with EPA-estimated 18 mpg combined. Actual mileage will vary. Final EPA-estimated ratings are not yet available. 
      While idling, the Police Responder Hybrid Sedan’s lithium-ion battery helps power the high electrical loads of a police vehicle, reducing engine run time and saving an estimated 0.27 gallons of fuel per hour. Police Responder Hybrid Sedan customers could see nearly $3,900 a year in potential fuel savings per vehicle relative to the Police Interceptor, if a police vehicle is driven 20,000 miles per year, runs two shifts per day, 365 days per year, idles 4.9 hours per 8-hour shift, and is fueled at an average gas price of $2.50/gallon. The Ford Police Responder online fuel calculator enables customers to determine how much they may potentially save.
      The new vehicle will be the first hybrid sedan with full pursuit capabilities. That means the car is certified by police agencies to be tough enough to handle police pursuits for longer periods at different speeds and over obstacles such as curbs and flooded intersections.
      The Police Responder Hybrid Sedan uses an efficient Atkinson-cycle 2.0-liter engine with an electric motor fed by an advanced lithium-ion battery. The hybrid is calibrated for law enforcement’s unique duty cycle and will run in battery-only mode up to 60 mph. The car automatically switches to maximum performance – with the engine and battery working at peak acceleration levels – when needed.
      “Our mission to create safe and healthy communities in Los Angeles is achieved through sustainable approaches in community policing, and that includes embracing new technologies,” said Charlie Beck, Los Angeles Police Department Chief. “Patrol vehicles are a police officer’s office, and we expect them to not only be economically and environmentally efficient, but also an effective tool for fighting crime in major metropolitan areas.”
      The Police Responder Hybrid Sedan can be ordered this spring and will be delivered to police departments nationwide next summer.
      This year, Ford also is testing a fleet of 20 Transit Connect hybrid taxi and van prototypes in demanding traffic conditions in New York and several other major U.S. cities.
