Trademark Filings Hint At SUVs and Coupes From Genesis

New trademark filings from Genesis pop up

Genesis is slowly building out its lineup of vehicles with a compact sedan called the G70 coming soon, along with a variety of SUVs and a coupe. We now have an idea of the possible names for these upcoming models.

Motor Authority has found various trademark filings done by Genesis for the United States Patent and Trademark Office. First up, Genesis has filed trademarks on GV60, GV70, and GV80. This is for their upcoming lineup of SUVs which first saw previewed the GV80 concept earlier this year at New York. Genesis has said their SUVs will use GV and a number for naming.

We know that Genesis is working on a coupe that is due to arrive in 2020 and it could be wearing a GT nameplate. Genesis has filed trademark applications for GT60, GT70, GT80, and GT90.

Finally, Motor Authority found a filing for the G60 trademark. This could possibly hint at a subcompact model of some sort.

As with all stories dealing with trademarks, this doesn't mean vehicles will appear with these names. But we can count on some of the GV names appearing on future models.

A bunch of CUVs from Genesis is not surprising.  But a bunch of coupes from Genesis may not be wise simply because the sales are not there anymore.  One luxury compact and one subcompact sedan make Genesis look like it is chasing Lexus or Buick, although I have no idea why they would do that.

Luxury segment coupes still sell, albeit in smaller numbers than sedans....Audi has one, BMW has 3, Lexus has 2, MB has several...got to have some if they are serious at luxury, along with convertibles eventually...

They could do a coupe, if it is in the $30-45k range.  Make it nicer than a Camaro or Mustang, but cheap than the German sport coupes.

I hate their naming scheme though, it is so boring, so generic, so copy cat, it sparks no emotion.  At least Kia called their car the "Stinger" that sounds aggressive and interesting.  GT60 is snooze button all day long.

This brand needs at least 3 crossovers to have any chance at survival.

Yes your just stating the obvious, bunch of CUV's, a sedan, coupe and they have the segment covered. Nothing new or surprising about this.

Now if they said the whole product line was Hybrid or EV only, that would be newsworthy and interesting.

The Genesis G70 just came out last year, but fast moving Genesis already has a refresh in the works. Due in the 2021 or 2022 model year, we got a hint of what may power the G70.
Someone at Genesis let it slip that the Hyundai Sonata N-Line engine would find its way into the G70 as the new base engine.  The current 2.0-liter inline 4-cylinder turbo that serves as the base powerplant today produces 252 horsepower and 260 lb-ft of torque. The Sonata N-Line engine is a 2.5-liter turbo 4 produces 290 horsepower and 310 lb-ft of torque, a significant boost over the current car.  This would likely carry over into the Genesis despite being oriented in a north-south fashion.  This engine could also find its way into the Genesis GV80 SUV that is due to be released next month. What will likely carry over is the current 3.3-liter twin-turbo V6, though with a possible power boost.
What will likely not carry over is the 6-speed manual transmission. According to Genesis, the manual makes up only 4% of sales.

Genesis has been having a hard time keeping the lid on the GV80 leaks lately. A day after someone leaked grainy pictures of the GV80 on Instagram, someone sent 4 pictures of the interior and exterior over to Car and Driver who published them for all the world to see.
The GV80 is Genesis' first entry into the hot SUV market and enters the segment currently occupied by the Mercedes Benz GLE, the Audi Q7, BMW X5, and Lincoln Aviator. It rides on the same rear wheel drive platform as the next generation G80 sedan due out next year. The main powerplant will be a 3.3-liter turbocharged V6 which in the G80 currently makes 365 horsepower, but could go up in this application. There's also the possibility of a turbo 4-cylinder or a naturally aspirated V6 as a base engine.
It's said to have driver assistance systems similar to Telsa autopilot which would be a first for Genesis.
For now, most of this is rumor and speculation as we wait for the official reveal next month. The GV80 is expected to go on sale Summer of 2020.

FOUNTAIN VALLEY, Calif., December 3, 2019 – Genesis Motor America today reported sales of 2,167 in November 2019, a 420 percent increase compared with the prior year. Sales of all three Genesis models were up significantly over the prior year.
“Genesis is on track to close the 2019 calendar year very strong,” said Mark Del Rosso, Chief Executive Officer, Genesis Motor North America. “Interest in our model lineup of three sedans persists, even in the often-volatile luxury market, and the first of two new Genesis SUVs is ‘Coming Soon’.”
In addition to being another consecutive month of sales growth, November marked the introduction of the 2020 Genesis G90 sedan to the U.S. market at the Los Angeles Auto Show. When it goes on sale later this month, the 2020 G90 will introduce a full styling update, as well as numerous technological and safety innovations.

    • Haha.  There's a lot of truth to that.  Greeks have left an indelible (still standing!) mark on Sicily and the southern provinces of Italy, at places like Paestum. I haven't been to Greece as many times as I should have!  I've been to Athens and 3 islands. I'd like to go to Athens and then to Corfu (Kerkyra) and get back to Italy from there ... on an overnight ferry ... that way, the passage is just a little bit more in $ than a hotel room and that includes a cabin.  It would nice to get up early and see the ferry approach the Italian coast at Bari or Brindisi ... both on the heel of the peninsula. There's no place like the Med!

    • The power levels on the G70 are competitive it when you get into G80 or G90, where the other guys have twin turbo V8s and 400 hp hybrid V6s and stuff like that, the Genesis engines seem old.
