    General Motors Fires More Than 10 People Over Fraudulent Emission Testing In India

    In India, General Motors hasn't issued a recall since 1995. That trend ended this past week as GM announced the recall of 114,000 Chevrolet Tavera utility vehicles built from 2005 to 2013 and are equipped with the 2.5L and 2.0L engines. The reason? According to India's Economic Times via Automotive News, GM employees deliberately fudged emission inspections to meet the standards.

    "Over a period of time some employees of the company engaged in the practice of identifying engines with lower emission which were fine-tuned and kept aside to be used for installation on vehicles during inspection," said GM in a letter sent to Indian regulators on July 18th. GM also admits that the reported weight of certain models were "manipulated" to meet lest stringent emission standards.

    Now GM has halted the sales of Tavera 2.5L and 2.0L and says they and that the company "has since identified a solution to the issues and performed the required engineering validation, and is awaiting regulatory approvals." GM also fired a number of employees at GM Powertrain this week. Sources at the company say one of the employees fired is Sam Winegarden, GM's vice president for global engine engineering. Winegarden joined the company in 1969. He is known for overseeing oversaw the Northstar V8 and premium V6 engine programs and became the VP of global engine engineering in 2004.

    WOW, what an ugly little black eye and the end of a career for a life time employee. A 44yr career down the toilet. he is roughly 66/67 years old if he joined right out of college. At this point I would say no one will touch him and he is officially retired. He also could have been the sacrificial lamb for a hidden problem that until now GM has ignored due to the way India does business.

    Interesting that for a man who oversaw the Northstar V8 and Premium V6 they could not find a emissions solution sooner to these little 4 bangors? Something smells here.

    No, I think pure greed of if we can get away with spending less on emission hardware, we can make more profit. My gut tells me this. Any place a company can get away with a bribe to not have to have a higher cost of building they will do it.

    Like Drew, I do wonder what Ford would say as to why it is harder in India than anywhere else.

    • I was hunting around for Airbus 340 vids.  How I miss this plane.  Back in its heyday, if I got on an Airbus 340, I was sort of steamed I didn't get onto a Boeing 747.  Now, I wish I had ridden on more of them. This video is sort of long, but very educational.  For one, it pointed out that the Airbus 330 (twin) and Airbus 340 (quad) were developed at the same time and share a lot of parts ... both are 2-4-2.  The 340 (quad) fell out of favor, while the 330 (twin) keeps spawning new variants, the latest of which is the -900 neo.   They made 4 of the Airbus 340 - 200, 300, 500, and 600.  One saw a lot of 300s and then a lot of 600s.  I've flown on both.  The 300 "looks" better.  Yes, it was the current time's answer to the very dated Boeing 707 and its skinny engines.  The 600 roars and those big engines get that disproportionately long fuselage (longer than a 747, IIRC) to rotate fairly quickly. Just great!  A cool 300 version, flown by Swiss and obviously in Swiss airspace.  Did I mention that I miss this plane?
    • I couldn't photograph it, but I saw a near perfect silver Saturn Aura sedan today.  I don't see those often.  I'm guessing they were possibly on the same platform as the Grand Am and Alero, but they did a nice job with this car.  Toward the end, Saturn was making some nicer looking cars, quite a step up from the spartan jellybean products they initially rolled out. Some dog/car sightings ... all this afternoon: 1.  I went to the AAA to load up a travel card and a little black lab puppy was hanging his head out of the car window near where I had parked and was wagging up a storm. 2.  I was sitting there getting coffee and, looking at the drive through, a guy driving out of it with one of those whipped coffee drinks let his dog in the passenger seat take the first big lick out of all that whipped garbage on those drinks ... don't give your dog sweets. 3.  I saw an upline SUV from which a German Shepherd had hoisted himself up via the console and was sticking his head out of it. They are all goofy critters.

Plans for the other 33 states and the District of Columbia were approved earlier this month.
    • No, I have not had a chance to see a GMC Hummer or the Rivian in person yet. While I have seen plenty of Rivian R1T around this area, I also saw on the news that the Bellevue service and delivery center had their first R1S's, I have not seen like you one in the wild yet. Thank you for posting, awesome to see. I do like just about everything on the Rivian both internally and externally. GMC Hummer, my big issue that we have discussed here in other threads and @Robert Hall and I believe others here have also mentioned is the depressing black all interiors and the lack of options for said interior colors. The First Edition GMC Hummers were a no go with that ugly colored black and white or was it grey and white, NASA inspired theme. While the wife and I both like the external styling, the internal is a failure to us for colors, style and layout is fine. I have to say that I am really liking the Rivian look and style works so well. It is going to be interesting to see what GM and Ford does for Full size SUV EV style. I also already responded to a GM survey on full size SUV/Trucks and bashed them about the lack of interior color options and exterior color options. Why does an EV from GM not have a green color of some sort to show off their Green Auto's?
