    GM Can't Make A Business Case for A Small Performance Car

      At the moment, GM can't make a case for a pocket rocket

    It seems a month can't go by without another automaker announcing a new pocket rocket. Currently we have the Ford Fiesta and Focus ST; Honda Civic Si, Subaru WRX and WRX STI; Subaru BRZ, Scion FR-S, and Volkswagen GTI. So that leaves us and a number of enthusiasts wondering - where is GM's contender?

     

    General Motors' vice president of product development tells Automotive News that at the moment, there isn't a business case for one.

     

    "Capital is not a black hole. On those cars, the price point begins to approach the segment of the next car up. We would spend a lot of money and resources, and what are we really doing?" said Reuss.

     

    AutoPacific Inc. analyst Dave Sullivan agrees with Reuss' reason, stating that the added cost and complexity of fitting a bigger engine and manual transmission into either the Sonic or Cruze is prohibitively expensive. But Sullivan does point out that they can pull items and help from their European division. Case in point is the Opel/Vauxhall Astra OPC/VXR with a turbocharged 2.0L four with 276 horsepower.

     

    For the time being, Reuss says that the company is offering a wide selection of accessories to boost performance for not that much cash. Case in point is the $995 performance stage kit and exhaust package for the Sonic. But if you press Reuss, he says a production pocket rocket could be in the timeline.

     

    "The real question is: Is that a big priority? For now, no. Forever? I wouldn't say that."

    There's a lot to like about the Sonic RS. I've sat in several of them, the sport seats are simply awesome--full leather with GM's synthetic suede inserts. The manual shifter feels great moving though the gates, the steering wheel feels good, and the overall interior is quite roomy for front occupants. I'd love to have one as a go-cart, haha.

     

    My issues mainly pertain with the lack of added power. The aggressive gearing is a mistake, the car turns 3500-4000 rpm at any highway speeds. That's basically a deal breaker for me as engine drone gives me an incredible headache after an hour, not to mention it ruins highway fuel economy (34 mpg vs 40 for standard gearing).

     

    The Sonic is due for a midcycle refresh, and I'm hoping the powertrain lineup gets revised. An RS with the new 1.5T and near 40 mpg again would be very appealing.

    Nah, I'll think they'll be ready...I onl y have to look at the new Camaro to see where the future lies for cars like the Cruze. I think for the first time in a long time, we'll like what we'll see......

    What new tech? Most of the tech already exists and the small cars with performance exist. Bring one then we can talk.

     

     

     

    Maybe I should say more way of thinking...tricks done to the camaro to make it lighter and faster. Models that will get some of that heavy hardware. And if they are going to build a pocket rocket, it better be able to handle some abuse. I think smaller engines are little tougher than the bigger ones just based on how much PSI that little guy can take. While I've seen some good tunes on the Cruze's 1.4, it's also easy to toast if you're not careful. With the right setup, might not be too hard depending on the engine to push some ponies. Watching people beating on their ST's gives me hope GM can do they same.

     

    Besides, it might not hurt GM to take a cue from what they did with the new camaro SS....where a regular production engine is built to be abused on a track....Now that Idea I like......

    • So did a little research on this and I see Cadillac does post this on their website, but I also verified with a stop in at my local Cadillac dealership. You can drive around in normal mode and get 300 hp with 354 lb-ft of torque as the normal mode programming allows. This is default for all trim levels of Optiq including the V.  Pressing the v mode button on the steering wheel is much like my Kia with drive mode. You can go into the various drive modes including Velocity Max with a 0 to 60mph in 3.5 seconds using the full 519 HP / 650 lb-ft of torque. In playing with it, it is noticeable the change in performance from Normal mode to Tour, Snow/Ice, Sport, My Mode, and Velocity Max mode.  Brotherton Cadillac did NOT have a Optiq-V yet on the lot, but they did have the Optiq in Luxury, Sport1 and Sport 2. The Sport 1 and 2 trims has the default of Sport drive mode where the Luxury has Tour mode as default. Now the item was was wanting to verify, was exactly what even the service department could not verify as their own documentation does not say what the various HP/Torque are for each drive mode. We just have default 300/354 for Tour and V-MAX of 519/650. At least this gives us a better understanding of if you need or want the extra power while driving, change into sport or V-Max mode if you have a V and then stomp on the accelerator.
    • Just not GM Loyalty card, their points program as well as other bank rewards programs. Seems Everyone is wanting to go cheap and give minimal for customer loyalty. Making me rethink many programs. I have started to stop and quit a few as the changes are not worth the hassle.

    • I would like to see that warm light gray platinum scheme come back.  Not the lighter cool cream color. 
    • First off, I am NOT wanting this to be political about our current president, but I do acknowledge that some will want to go political on this. The intelligence to lead a nation and the effects one has on those citizens. Some say #47 is having a positive effect on the U.S. others say he is having a negative effect and the current administration is taking credit for the current low inflation, low unemployment, etc. Yet, what is happening now from an employment, selling price, etc. is actually the effects of the last administration. WHY, most businesses are selling product they ordered back at the end of 2024 at a set price and received before tariffs went into effect. It has always been normal for businesses to have 6 to 9 months of stock on hand unless you are a true little mom and pop shop where you tend to be more month by month. In this regard we have seen the current administration tariff war end in closing down small companies due to no longer being able to afford their products that are produced in China and abandoning the product in China as they cannot afford to pay the higher prices. This bring it to the point I am making in what I believe Bruce Springsteen is calling for, people to think about how businesses are really run, the costs of things to come and the pay to play affect of the current administration. We have seen plenty of battery and EV auto plants now put on hold, we have seen plenty of green energy projects canceled or put on hold.  The effect on the auto industry will affect millions and Tesla just announced a minimum of 1 week idling of their U.S. assembly plants due to oversupply of EVs. We are coming up on the end of the two-month freeze by auto companies on the prices they sell their auto's for. Will it truly end in big or small price increases? How much of the cost of high tariffs will the companies eat to keep sales going? If you have not repaired your auto at the Dealerships, 3rd party repair places or did the repair yourself buying parts at an auto part store, then you have not felt the increased cost yet, but I can tell you things have gotten much more expensive than they were.
