Mercedes Wonders If Its Worth Selling Diesels In the U.S.

Mercedes-Benz: Maybe we should skip out on selling diesels for the U.S.

Thanks to the Volkswagen diesel emission scandal and demand for diesel vehicles beginning to shrink, Mercedes-Benz is wondering if it's time to pull back on their diesel efforts in the U.S.

"We have to look at that and see whether it makes sense to offer diesels in the future. We have not come to a conclusion but we obviously always tend to develop cars and offer vehicles according to customers' demands," said Matthias Luehrs, vice president of sales and product management for Mercedes-Benz.

Dropping diesels for the U.S. "is a theoretical option," he went onto say.

Mercedes have already dropped plans for bringing the C-Class diesel, a model that was supposed to go on sale earlier this year. Right now, the priority at Mercedes-Benz is getting EPA certification for the GLS-Class. Other models are expected down the road.

Luehrs said the company is currently doing market research and expects the first results to come in early next year.

I would say they don't need the diesel, because the plug-in hybrid replaces it.  It has the low end torque, more horsepower, gets the good gas mileage and doesn't pollute as much.  So this is a better way to go than diesel.  What Mercedes should focus on is a 4 cylinder plug in hybrid that would replace the 4 cylinder diesel, and they could put it in a Sprinter too.  The hybrid cost isn't even that much, it is probably cheaper than making a diesel.

diesel is a legacy thing for Mercedes.  WAYYY BACK WHEN they were a premiere brand for the diesel cause in the US, and it was part of the reason they HAD a rep for their cars going hundreds of thousands of miles.

Currently here in Jersey, a recent 23-cent gas tax was applied in full. Fuel prices in general are slipping lower tho. Diesel is currently about 10-15 cents cheaper @ 1.97, but the diesel tax of 27 cents is split & deferred; half will hit in 2017, the other in 2018.

There were a surprising number of diesel options in the U.S. from American truck companies in lines above light duty, including GM, Ford, Chrysler, and ever Studebaker, beginning in the 1950s. They set the foundation for diesel power in the U.S. market. GM especially had reams of early diesel experience via WWII, Euclid & Electromotive, among other Divisions.

I really like diesel vehicles.  And yes, we have a long legacy of diesel options...

Washington State, Gas average is $2.09 per gallon and Diesel is $2.59. I have seen less and less Diesel on the road.

General Motors will be bringing back the Hummer name to sell a new electric truck as part of the GMC lineup.
The Wall Street Journal first broke the news yesterday with GM moving forward on plans to bring Hummer back that was first reported back in June. The report also said that the company would tout the return with a Super Bowl ad featuring NBA star LeBron James. GM declined to comment.
The decision is likely due to the planned $3 billion investment for the Detroit-Hamtramck plant that we reported back in October. The investment is to gear up the plant to build an electric pickup for GMC and an electric Cadillac SUV by 2023. But in 2021, the plant will produce a "low volume BT1 pickup" under a different brand. At the time we speculated that it may be Hummer. This seems to lineup with the reporting done by the Wall Street Journal which says the truck will be similar in design to the Jeep Renegade.
Bloomberg adds that there are plans for a large SUV for Hummer if the truck proves successful according to sources. The sources also say that the company is considering selling the new Hummer truck in existing dealers under the name of “Hummer by GMC.”

The EPA has officially released its assessment of the 2020 Jeep Wrangler EcoDiesel. The EcoDiesel is only available as a 4-door with an 8-speed automatic and in that configuration, the EcoDiesel manages to get 29 mpg highway, 22 mpg city, and 25 combined. That is slightly better than a 4x4 Ram 1500 with the same powertrain. The next closest model in terms of fuel efficiency is the 2-door, 4-cylinder, manual transmission, rear-wheel drive Wrangler at 24 highway mpg, 22 city mpg, and 23 combined.
The diesel engine is a $4,000 option though so you may not ultimately save money. Instead, Jeep believes the EcoDiesel option is best suited for those who need the gobs of torque generated by the V6 diesel when going off-road. With 260 horsepower and 442 lb.-ft of torque, the Wrangler EcoDiesel has torque in spades. To the dismay of many, the Ecodiesel does come standard with electronic stop/start.
If diesel isn't your thing, there is the 2.0T 4-cylinder which produces 270 horsepower and 295 lb.-ft of torque or the 3.6-liter Pentastar V6 which produces 285 horsepower and 260 lb.-ft of torque.  Both engines also come with stop/start or can be upgraded to the eTorque system that smooths out the torque band and either engine is available with a manual transmission or 8-speed automatic.
