    Trivia Tuesday, April 21, 2015

Can you answer our Trivia Tuesday questions for April 21st?

1.) What's the deal with this vehicle on the right?

2.) True or false; Benz invented the automobile.

3.) Name two non-American brands to use Ford V8s and two non-American brands to use Chrysler V8s.

4.) How much wider was Pontiac's first year 'Wide Tracks' than it's GM siblings?

5.) Last one is a trick question, because I don't know the answer. Maybe one of you does. What year/make/model is this emblem off of?

Well the first one is a VW prototype to replace the original Beetle.  Didn't work out.

Second one, I always think of Cugnot as the true inventor of the automobile.

Number three for Chrysler, was it Jensen and Facel Vega?

    2. False

    3. Jaguar is at least one of the Ford users.  Facel Vega used a Hemi I believe..... though I think you are going to get a bit of contention over the wording of this question.

    4. not at all

1: Ocnblu is right on the money. That is a Volkswagen prototype to replace the Beetle. What made it unique aside from using a water-cooled engine was that it was mid-engine.

3: Facel Vega used a HEMI. Jensen used Chrysler V8s, but I don't think any were HEMIs. I think the other was Monteverdi in a sports car from the 70's.

My contention is over the word "Branded"

5: 1960 Dodge Polara or Matador emblem.

    I think you're right...

ocnblu :: correct on #1. Engineered by Porsche, reputedly 'mid-engined', reputedly came very close to becoming the Beetle replacement until it was squashed & all records/ prototypes were destroyed by VW.

DD :: Correct on #2. There were numerous, self-propelled, 4-wheel vehicles built before 1886. Here's one, still in existence, the 1868 Hill automobile :

    autos5089.jpg

Unfortunately for anyone with an active brainstem, popular slop internet 'fact' is commonly stating that Benz "invented" the automobile. Patently false.

HoLottaBuicks :: Correct on #5, and HoLottaThanks! ;)

Going to let the discussion simmer longer on #3 & #4...

    4. not at all

I am shocked.. SHOCKED I say, at this answer.

I don't see why.   Here's why I thought that (I have since looked it up, but won't reveal the answer).  When Pontiac brought back Wide-Track in the late 90's on the Grand Prix, they made a big deal about it in most of their ads.  The problem? They weren't really any wider than the competition. (in 1998 for example, at 61.7" in the front and 61.1" in the back, it has about the same track as the Taurus's 61.5ish and it is narrower than the Intrepid's 62.4"/62")  And it was also narrower than some of it's platform mates.... the Intrigue had a wider track than the "Wide Track" Grand Prix and was less than half an inch wider than Impala/Lumina.. a difference that can be made by simply specing slightly different wheel offsets.

Here's the remaining 2 questions & their answers:

3.) Name two non-American brands to use Ford V8s and two non-American brands to use Chrysler V8s.

Sunbeam Tiger & DeTomaso Mangusta are 2 Euro brand make/models that ran Ford V8s. These 2 were mentioned above.
Facel Vega and the Jensen Interceptor (2nd gen) were 2 Euro brands to run Chrysler V8s. William got these correct.

4.) How much wider was Pontiac's first year 'Wide Tracks' than it's GM siblings?

The first year for Pontiac's Wide Track (as correctly stated above) was 1959. That year, here are the track measurements for the GM Divisions:

    Chevy : 60" / 60"

    Olds : 61" / 61"

    Cadillac : 61" / 61"

    Buick : 63" / 60"

    Pontiac : 63" / 64"

Obviously, it was a factual claim and not merely advertising fluff.

Unfortunately, after roughly 1968, finding either these specs in factory brochures OR magazine road tests of full-size American models is like hen's teeth.
I am almost quite certain that Pontiac retained a circa 63/64 track into the early '70s, but I cannot verify where the other Divisions's F/S cars were.

So here's my beef with the wording of Question #3.

Technically Lancia would count as a correct answer as well, but I know you weren't looking for that.

Well, with me; you've got to assume there's a vintage angle; yes.
Frankly, I am unaware of the above vehicle...

Well that's why I was taking issue with your wording.

After the Fiat-Chrysler merger, Lancia started selling a rebadged version of 300C as the Lancia Thema in Europe.  It was better than our 300 in a single way.... it could come with the same 3.0 Diesel that is currently available in the Jeep Grand Cherokee.  Other than that, it was basically identical to our Chrysler 300.. including the 5.7 liter Hemi V8.

I may not have been 'looking for that', but a correct answer is a correct answer- multiple people just will have to split the prize money. ;)

    • Used this site to have it generate me an exterior and interior version of a KIA EV9 with Genesis look. Deep Image https://deepimg.ai/ai-image-generator/ Have to say I really like this look! @Drew Dowdell I could so enjoy this SUV. Am excited for the GV90 to come out next year if we still get it here in the U.S.
    • 1 minute 30 in and I was swearing at the guy...and I cut it short. Didnt wanna listen to his stupidity any longer than that.  1. Who the phoque does mechanics work on MODERN cars at home in 2025? 2. I get the "right to repair" outrage for Zeke's Auto Shop somewhere in  hickville, alabama or bumpkin pumpkin south carolina... but there is a reason why most people do not attempt to work on modern cars in 2025.    3. its to avoid killing one's self and others as cars today are actually sophisticated.  Do they have to be that sophisticated?  Well that is what this moron youtuber is trying to sell his idea on.   4. But at around the 1 minute mark is where his argument all went south (pun intended as it seems the folk down south in them there united states are really phoquing dumb individuals).  He goes on to say that one could fix the brakes on a car by themselves.  Its not that hard he says. But even if putting the brakes on backwards he says, you would hear a noise that something is wrong and you would just change the brakes up again to put them right.  Like he does not see the problem with what he just said?  ALL KINDS of error in thinking in that... Zeke in his business auto shop down the street should be able to hire auto mechanics students straight from an auto mechanics school to fix modern GM cars, Ford cars, KIAs, Toyotas  and all the other OEMs out there WITHOUT having to buy special proprietary equipment and computers to unlock the proprietary car's computer to be able to read the software language to be able to repair...   I will agree with that.  But Bobby Joe with his two good teeth and his blood cousin/brother-n-law  Waylon who married his sister Country Sunshine shouldnt be able to... 6. There is a reason to why computers are locked though.  Everything phoquing Bluetooth in cars today and outside hackers might and will be able to take control of the cars.  Not that would stop any hacker, but it is more difficult to do so. 7. AND....cars today ARE sophisticated.   You cant just bang on a car part today with a hammer to get it to fit or to hillybilly a solution for it.   Yeah...put a brake part on backwards he says...    Fix it later and better he says when you hear weird noise he says....  Phoque me!!!     If you are serious in doing your own car work...make the phoque sure you aint putting on nothing backwards...  I thought changing brakes are easy.  THAT is what he says too.  But that is the thing, if  putting on brakes is such an easy and trivial thing , why would you put it on backwards, but if you do put it on backwards, what else do you phoque up on the car today in 2025?   And that is with brakes...   Cars today are not just mechanical....   Does this youtuber or Zeke or Bobby Joe,  Waylon and Country Sunshine know electronics and computers?  Are they willing to learn?  They probably all flunked out and dropped out of school, so no...they have no will to learn anything new...  Any other Joe Blow...who some knowledge and its a difficult thing...   Why would you attempt to fix it yourself voiding a warranty or phoquing up another part and being in a worse position than before?   The folk that are able to work on today's cars OUTSIDE of a dealership KNOW what to do. They often HOTROD their cars and TUNE their engines different from the factory settings.  These guys ALREADY  know what to do.  Joe from accounting in your office has not the time, nor the patience to do such things.   Billy Bob in appalachia might be able to do it because Billy Bob is a car guy, but Bobby Joe with his 2 good teeth, most probably not.  Fake phoquing outrage...
