Quick Drive: 2018 Fiat 124 Spider Lusso

How to make a Miata slightly softer

Last year, I had the chance to spend a week in a Fiat 124 Spider Abarth. While I found it to offer improved handling and a somewhat nicer interior over the Mazda MX-5 Miata it is based on, there were a few items that kept me from saying it was better - mainly the turbo engine and exterior design. A couple of months ago, I found myself in another 124 Spider. This time, it was the Lusso which drops a fair amount of the aggression from the Abarth, along with providing a softer suspension tune. Would this model be able to change my tune?

    • The Lusso is the polar opposite to the Abarth I drove last year in terms of looks. It is toned down with the removal of the aggressive bumpers and quad-tip exhausts. The end result is a much cleaner look. I just wished Fiat could have done more to the rear end as it still looks a bit out of place with the rest of the design.
    • This particular Lusso is the Red Top Edition which as the name suggests has a red soft-top. I will admit this does add a touch of personality and helps the 124 Spider stand out.
    • Not much has changed with the interior since our last review. Getting in and out is still a bit tough due to the low ride height and anyone over six-feet will feel quite cramped. The overall design is the same as the MX-5 Miata, with slight differences to the steering wheel and instrument cluster to make it slightly more Fiat-ish. Material quality is slightly higher than the Mazda, with more soft-touch materials.
    • One issue I did discover in this go-around is the location of the 12-volt outlet. It is mounted deep in the passenger footwell, almost near the engine firewall. Finding it was not a pleasant experience as I needed to pull out my phone to act as a flashlight to find the stupid thing.
    • Power comes from the turbocharged 1.4L MultiAir four-cylinder. Compared to the Abarth, the Lusso loses four horsepower. This is due to a more restrictive exhaust. My tester came with the optional six-speed automatic.
    • I wish that I could say Fiat solved the engine issued I mentioned in the previous review, but they have not. The turbo engine still feels laggy on the low-end of the rpm band. Plus, the automatic transmission is tuned to quickly upshift to improve fuel economy. This leaves you without any turbo boost when you want it. I keep thinking that the six-speed manual would be slightly better as it would me control when it is time to shift, allowing the engine to be fully exploited.
    • One trait that sets the 124 Spider apart from its Miata brethren is the suspension tuning. Fiat decided to go with a softer tune on most models - the Abarth is the exception as it gets a stiffer suspension setup. The difference is noticeable as the 124 Spider provides a slightly smoother ride than the Miata. This softening doesn’t change the handling dynamics of the Spider. It still darts into turns with minimal body roll and fast steering.
    • The Lusso Red Top Edition sits as the flagship of the 2018 124 Spider lineup with a base price of $31,440. This comes equipped with a number of options such backup camera, Bose audio system, navigation, and heated seats as standard equipment. With destination, this vehicle comes to an as-tested price of $32,435.
    • The Lusso model may be the sweet spot in the 124 Spider lineup as it offers a slightly smoother ride and improved interior. But Fiat still needs to address the performance of the turbo-four. It is a great alternative to the MX-5 Miata, but not better.

Still like the Mazda version better. Although this is hot. Bring me the 64 Pontiac wagon...the SSR...and a brand new Silverado HD...along with this...and this Fiat....another whole dream car garage.

Agreed, while I am too big and have never been into small sports cars, there are many others out there that look better than this. Hell, I would rather take a Saturn Sky or pontiac Solstice over this Fiat.

The Sky and Solstice look good from the outside, but I remember sitting in them at a car show when they were new---nasty Fisher-Price interior plastics and weird placement of some things.

True, but just think if it had a quality interior, these cars might still be around today.

I dont think the interior quality of these had any bearing of the success (or lack of success) of these.

Seeing that Pontiac and Saturn were shutdown shortly after the Kappa twins were introduced to the world.

I think the lack of success of the Kappa twins were in fact just a symbolic gesture of the lack of focus and attention their respective brands got from parent company General Motors.

Saturn did not really need a roadster at this time. Saturn needed to get back to what made Saturn a success in the first place. And that was product that was not badge engineered from the GM umbrella. The whole purpose of Saturn was to be a different kind of car company.

Image result for Saturn. A different kind of company

Pontiac, had lost its identity when they started ditching their engines and went for Chevrolet/GM corporate engines. And then the whole FWD badge engineered platforms they shared with virtually every other GM brands...and into the 1990s and the 2000s, with Saturn too...

Pontiac at this time did not know if they wanted to be plastic cladded boy racer FWD appliances that appear to be sporty, or plastic cladded boy racer FWD soccer mom vehicles that appear to be sporty or hanging on to RWD...ditching RWD but then going back to RWD with 4 cylinder roadsters and muscle cars from Australia that have ZERO Pontiac DNA...(those muscle cars from Australia were awesome, but they were more or less GM corporate affairs than anything else...OK...Chevrolet DNA with a "put another shrimp on the barbie" accent...

GM badge engineered the Kappa twins(triplets) and lost focus on what their respective brands actually needed. Twas Pontiac only that really  needed the RWD roadster to spark excitement into the brand. Opel and Saturn did not need these.

And in turn, the Kappa twins(triplets) were wrongfully marketed to their respective brands.  And in turn, the other GM brands, including the recipients of the Kappa twins(triplets) were starved of funds and R&D for much needed better product planning...

    Abarth or Lusso.

    Very Italian. Very Nicely done.

The Kappa twins were good, but I think Fiat was wise to go to Mazda.

GM tried to do it on their own, came up short. This Fiat on all trims (124, Lusso, Abarth) is a winner, and if Im not mistaken, has outlived the Kappa twins(triplets)...

    • There is one thing that Im most worried about.  A desperate, down on his luck, meth addict will resort to violence when his cash is low. The usa is this eventual desperate, down on his luck, meth addict.  Already, the usa has threatened Canada's sovereignty a year ago before when the usa still had strong economic power. That economic power is fading away real fast.   1. trump relied on his 51st state rhetoric again and called Carney governor when he and his idiot cabinet realized the big words Carney used against the usa at Davos. Blames the China deal though as to disguise the fact that when Carney was speaking, he and his posse did not understand one spoken word.  2. Scott Bessent, born in south carolina, goes to show you HIS intelligence level regardless if he is a Yale grad, also flaps his lips in bravado...a full phoquing week  past by when he realized what that speech from Carney meant.  Still though...words of full of fight from Bessent to Canada though.   3. Pete Hoekstra talks tough of sending the us airforce into Canada if Canada does not follow through with the F35 purchases. 4. trump verbally attacking not only Greenland's sovereignty, but Denmark's and even Europe as a whole... 5. trump kidnaps Venezuelan's leader along with his wife stealing or trying to steal Venezuela's oil.  Bet you though that trump's friends are reaping from that operation... 6. innocent americans are losing their life murdered by trump's gestapo army called ice.   And all that when the usa is not suffering yet. When it comes to that, the usa is still a powerful military force, what WILL this administration do?     This situation is very alarming more so than the Cuban missile crisis.   And that is why news leaked out that Canada is preparing for a usa invasion and how Canada is to deal with it...
    • trump threatened 100% tariffs on Canadian products again as a result of this deal.   Well, trump does not want a free trade deal between China and Canada.  Many things wrong with that thought process...but... The EV trade deal  between China and Canada is not by ANY means a free trade deal between our two countries. Its just a deal regarding a few products that China and Canada agreed to eliminate or reduce our respective tariffs on our respective products that we trade with each other.    But...only focusing on the 100% tariffs that trump likes to speak of... At THIS juncture, I dont think Canadian politicians and finance ministers care all that much anymore. I mean, they care, but they arent afraid of the potential down falls of the Canadian economy as it once was threatened 8, 9, 10 months ago.  Carney has had the time to renegotiate trade deals with the rest of the planet to sell our goods to our existing partners. It was easy to do as trump also threatened Canada's allies...  The WORLD was under the same phoquing threat.  The world just united together AWAY from the usa.  Also...Carney was able to talk to countries OUTSIDE of Canada's usual trading partner's to reach NEW markets to sell our goods to...  What is really frightening to the usa's future is that  1. trump has alienated usa's allies AWAY from the usa. 2. trump has also UNITED usa's enemies with usa's former allies...  3. usa's enemies remain usa's enemies.  China and Russia and North Korea arent exactly usa's friends. trump , family and friends get to profit from Russia, but not americans...    Licknut, or Nutlick or whatever this grifter's name is keeps on harping on the fact that Canada's  75% of exports are to the usa. 1. While true...Carney and Canada have now NEW trading partner's to sell to. It looks like a good chunk of that 75% is now going to go to other markets...  CUSMA is still important though.  But Mexico and Canada could now actually live without the usa.   2.  And THIS IS MORE important... While true that 75% of Canada's exports are to the usa...tariffs are paid by the country that IMPOSES these tariffs.  75% of Canada products are a HUGE amount to BOTH countries... A) That 100% tariff on Canada's products will cost americans dearly... B) 75% of those products NEED to be purchased elsewhere...like potash and aluminium and wood... Where in the phoque is Licknut/Nutlick going to replace all those Canadian products?  At least Canada has new markets going on...  Is Licknut/Nutlick busy on the global stage trying to get new products in?  All I know is trump keeps on threatening the world with tariffs...  Hence why the world gave Carney a standing ovation when Carmey said that the world SHOULD just ignore the usa and let the usa just wither and die...
    • When the deal was announced about 49 000 Chinese entering Canada and increasing every year up to 75 000 or whatever it is in the next 5 years... no details were announced about where these Chinese EVs would be built.  Hints and allegations but nothing announced in the media. I guess the would be plans have been announced now.  Dougie Ford, a conservative Premier of Ontario... was not happy about it. But why is it that ALL conservative/republican and right leaning politicians in North America always get their panties in a twist and ALWAYS NEVER work with solutions that benefit ALL and ALWAYS go against the phoquing grain?  But I digress...  Dougie Ford was upset and publicly denounced the move.  Why is that bad? 1. Canadians NEED to stand together in face of the threats that are coming from the usa. 2. Carney...is a conservative leaning leader himself, but is heading a liberal, left leaning party but I digress again...Carney is not a politician. He is a finance guy. Was THE finance guy in Steven Harper's cabinet when Steven Harper was Prime Minister, yes...CONSERVATIVE party...and was THE finance guy in the UK when he took the job there when the Canadians conservatives shat the bed again...and took the UK finance job when asked by the UK torries just when the Brits were talking about Brexit. He advised the UK CONSERVATIVE party NOT pursue Brexit...but I digress again...  Carney is a smart FINANCE guy. Carney does deals between countries.  He knows what is good for the country he represents...in other words...Carney would NOT phoque Canada up... and Dougie Ford should have known that instead of causing a public riff to which trump could exploit.  Big oil and fox news and right wing parties from the usa and Canada already have their claws in Alberta...  Some Albertans are diseased with this shyte that is going on with right wing bullshyte... 3. Like I said...hints and allegations were winked at that Chinese EVs would eventually maybe be built in Canada and the way Carney spoke BEFORE Davos, is that Canada is ready to decouple from the usa.  And eventually Carney and Dougie Ford spoke and this is what Dougie had to say yesterday or was it today?   4. Carney then went to Davos and spoke with words that trump's administration could never understand, he used bigly words and what was said was that Canada and the rest of the world should and could and will decouple from the usa and that the usa will be irrelevant to which all the political leaders there applauded Carney with a standing ovation.   And of course China WANTS to build their EVs here in Canada: Your link also suggest that Canadian finance leaders and trade makers TOLD the trump administration what WILL happen with China BEFORE China and Canada met to draw up this EV deal...   " Canada didn’t take the U.S. by surprise, the official said. When asked about Canada detouring from matching American tariffs on Chinese EVs, Trump said Carney was doing the right thing."   And of course when the deal was done...trump said publicly:   “That’s what he should be doing. It’s a good thing for him to sign a trade deal. If you can get a deal with China, you should do that," the U.S. president said.   And of course China WANTS to build their EVs here in Canada:   Canada cut tariffs on Chinese EVs from 100 percent to 6.1. Trump threatened 100 percent tariffs in response to deal. China now wants to build EVs in Canada with local partners. Canada’s recent trade deal with China was bound to cause controversy. The agreement slashes tariffs on Chinese EVs from 100 percent down to just 6.1 percent, prompting U.S. President Donald Trump to threaten 100 percent tariffs on Canada if the deal proceeds. Still, China insists the arrangement is meant to benefit both countries and isn’t a zero-sum game.
    • This will be a nail in the American Auto industry Coffin with China willing to build EVs in Canada. • Had a coworker who just bought one as the VW dealership had the fully loaded ID.Buzz with MSRP of $72,595 marked down to $29K with a butt load of VW discounts and the dealer wanted to get rid of it. He said the same thing you did, but at the price, he thinks it will be an awesome local use auto for the family and kids. Totally agree that my EV9 is a far better purchase than this for the original prices.
